Giulio Segantini is back and this time it's pure objection-handling firepower. If you sell anything over the phone, this is a tactical breakdown of how to handle “send me an email,” “we're already working with someone,” “too expensive,” “not interested,” and every other cold call objection without sounding scripted or desperate. Built around Giulio's 'ACE Framework' (Accept → Consent → Explore), this is a masterclass in real-world objection handling for SDRs, AEs, and sales leaders.
The time finally arrived on the show where I was joined by Ladies European Tour Caddy, TPG Golf Coach, Ex Pro player & The King of Italy, the one and only Giulio Castagnara who those familiar with the show will also remember him as the current partner and caddy of Alessandra Fanali. We struck up a good friendship after the final event of the year when out at Andalucia Costa Del Sol Open de Espana in Malaga. Legend! Giulio is from Pordenone just outside of Udine in North Eastern Italy and would go to Texas Christian University becoming a major player there at TCU contributing to multiple Academic All American first team picks as well as Scholar of the Year. In 2019 Giulio would turn professional and ply his trade on Alps Tour and played some tournaments on Challenge Tour for 4 years before by his own admission losing his love for the game during this time on the Golf Course will Golf evolving from strength to strength. Since stopping in 2022 Giulio would get his PGA Coaching licenses and would loop on the bag for a few events with Alessandra before going full time on the bag for Ale in 2024 with brilliant results on LET since then with numerous close shaves on tour in terms of being in contention and multiple Top 20 finishes for the Fanali/Castagnara combination with 4 Top 10 finishes on tour last year in 2025 including 2nd placed finish at Ford NSW Open in Woollongong. In mid 2025 Giulio would make a big announcement joining the team at TPG Golf to be a qualified Golf Coach with lessons online or getting the chance to go to the States recently to do in person coaching. Giulio is a true gentleman and a very funny guy with Fanali & Castagnara being one of my favourite duos on tour now! Can't thank them both enough for their generosity! All the best this week guys and for 2026! Downloads via Podbean, Apple Podcasts & Spotify while the recorded video will be on YouTube if that is your preferred version!

I was delighted to be joined by the fantastic Ale Fanali after another super consistent season on Ladies European Tour finishing 27th which included 4 Top 10's and a 2nd placed finish at Ford NSW Open at Wollongong finishing shy of an inspirational display from Mimi Rhodes and making her Major championship debut at Royal Porthcawl. After chatting with Ale & partner/caddy Giulio in Spain it was great to have her on for a full episode. A great duo at the moment. Alessandra is from Alatri in the Lazio district of Italy and would take up the game at round about 9 years old. Ale has had a great junior career which seen her play in 2017 Junior Solheim Cup for Europe, 4x European Ladies' Am Team Championship for Italy but biggest of all was helping Italy make history winning their first ever Gold Medal at 2016 European Girls' Team Championships a memory that has stuck forever. Ale would go to Arizona State University alongside Linn Grant & Alexandra Försterling and would participate in the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur in 2019. In 2022 Ale would finish runner up at Italian Ladies Open as an amateur after Morgane Metraux holed for Eagle from 20ft to clinch the title in the playoff. Since 2023 Fanali has been very consistent performer and has numerous Top 10 & Top 20 finishes on tour including 3 runner ups on LET and would represent Italy at 2024 Olympics Games. A fun episodes full of laughs and good times. Thanks so much Ale for being great! The win is coming soon. Be sure to download via Podbean, Spotify & Apple Podcasts.

Welcome to the first new music show of 2026 – and thanks to Giulio aka Parcae for his great selections last week! We have a certain amount of catchup from last year, but we also have a surprisingly large amount of new music already, either released this week or last, or forthcoming. LISTEN AGAIN in a new year. Stream on demand from fbi.radio or podcast here. hidden_attachment – sorry this was just something i had to do [ky/hidden_attachment Bandcamp] hidden_attachment – in moncton i spent all my money on pinball and beer [ky/hidden_attachment Bandcamp] In November I played a track from Ky Brooks, the Montreal artist who recorded an album in 2023 called Power Is The Pharmacy for Constellation under the name Ky. They appear under various aliases, the most current of which is hidden_attachment, and they were previously known for making noise-punk with Lungbutter and freeform experimental stuff with Nag, among many others. The new hidden_attachment release is an EP described as “a tiny horrible opera”, which seems misleading – horrible is a matter of opinion, “opera” perhaps less so, but this is a small epic of practically ever genre other than opera. Jangling indie rock, electro-pop, bedroom drum’n’bass, bedroom punk, experimental ambient pop… ish. It’s weird & fun! Silvia Tarozzi – Lucciole [Unseen Worlds/Bandcamp] Silvia Tarozzi – Le ossessioni [Unseen Worlds/Bandcamp] When US label Unseen Worlds introduced us to Italian violinist/singer/composer and more Silvia Tarozzi, it was her first album Mi specchio e rifletto, an album that reflects her broad musical experience, from working with groundbreaking minimalist electronic composer Eliane Radigue to contemporary music with Ensemble Dedalus, to the folk music of her local region, improvisation, and playful studio experimentation. There was more than a hint of Penguin Cafe Orchestra. Then in 2022, Tarozzi released another extraordinary work, Canti di guerra, di lavoro e d’amore (“Songs of war, work and love”), with the cellist Deborah Walker, presenting a collection of music inspired by folk songs from rural Emilia which came from working class women involved with the partisan resistance in World War II, including songs sung by choirs of female rice field workers – music that the pair had grown up with. In April 2025, some of us were incredibly lucky, in Sydney and I think Melbourne, to witness Tarozzi & Walker performing these songs together, with just their instruments and voices – one of those occasions when musicianship seems like magic. So there’s a lot of anticipation with this new solo album from Tarozzi – or there would be, except that Lucciole appeared seemingly out of nowhere, available digitally on Bandcamp on December 12th. We’ll have to wait for April this year for the LP and CD, but the whole album’s there if you’re willing to stump up $10USD. Once again this is a wonderful tapestry of an album, with brass ensemble arrangements that set it somewhere between classical & folk music, along with synths, field recordings and turntables bringing modern twists. Her voice is lovely and some of the songwriting evokes the baroque pop of Sufjan Stevens in the best way. Winged Wheel – I See Poseurs Every Day [12XU/Bandcamp] Winged Wheel – Speed Table [12XU/Bandcamp] A US experimental rock supergroup, Winged Wheel began as a filesharing process between various musicians including violist Whitney Johnson aka Matchess, resulting in the 2022 debut album No Island. But for their new album Desert So Green, the band (expanded further to include, among others, Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley) had toured extensively, and headed into the studio together. The result is an album with psych-kraut-rock intensity and rhythmic drive, blurts of postpunk harshness, shards of viola, and vocals at times. It’s a real surprise, and really worth digging into. Èlg & la Chimie – La ville cachée [Murailles Music/Bandcamp] I don’t speak much French, not well anyway, but there’s just scads of great music from France – and francophone artists from Belgium, Switzerland and Canada, not to mention other former colonies – and you know I’m happy to play music in any languages as much as instrumental music. But understanding the pure breadth of francophone music is still challenging, so I’m happy when French artists fall into my lap. The entity known as Èlg is Laurent Gérard, and he’s been involved in experimental rock, sound-stuff, weird electronic etc for a good couple of decades. La chimie (chemistry) was a project of his in 2013, made up of weird electronics and loops – but now it’s also his band, in which he plays amplified guitalele (ukulele/guitar hybrid) and keyboards, with Marie Nachury on bass, electroncis and percussion, and Johann Mazé on drums and drum triggers. All three also sing, and they make a righteous noise, sometimes starting off as normal-sounding songs until something super-weird happens; in particular, often magnificent grooves on booming, clattering drum kit, and thumping bass. No two tracks are anything like each other, but there’s a through-line of unchained inspiration. Truly something else. JJJJJerome Ellis – Evensong, part 3 (for and after Jessica Valoris) [Shelter Press/Bandcamp] This wonderful album came out in November, but I didn’t properly get to it until too late to include it last year. JJJJJerome Ellis is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, academic, cross-media artist and more; they are of Grenadian-Jamaican-American heritage, and they’re a disabled person with a stutter – something that they’ve ingrained in their practice, including in the spelling of their first name. This album, Vesper Sparrow, draws from Black American and Caribbean culture as well as pop and experimental music, while being placed primarily in a composed jazz context. Most of the tracks are written for, and sometimes feature, fellow artists, poets and theorists. Alongside granular processing and sampling, Ellis’s stutter features and becomes a structural part of the music – but whatever the theoretical basis, this is beautiful and incredibly creative music. Toni Geitani – Ya Sah [Toni Geitani Bandcamp] Toni Geitani – Wasla [Toni Geitani Bandcamp] Originally trained in filmmaking, Lebanese musician Toni Geitani has since gained a Masters in live electronics in Amsterdam, where he is based now. His Masters thesis is titled “Sampling as a Political Medium”, which sounds fascinating. In his music, he melds Arabic vocals with classical instrumentation and experimental electronic production – the three preview tracks from his forthcoming album Wahj are stunning. “Wahj” (وهج) means “radiance”, and Geitani invites us to look through the collapse we see around, and seek that light. Obelisk – Salty Lemon Air [Geometric Corruption/Bandcamp] FBi’s own Ryan O’Rourke, presenter of Mithril for all things heavy & experimental, also makes music as Obelisk. It’s heavy and experimental for sure, but very electronic, very deconstructed club with aspects of breakcore, groaning distorted bass, trance keyboards and glitch. Obviously it’s awesome. Kloke – Silk [Subtle Audio/Bandcamp] Huuuuge jungle/drumfunk/drum’n’bass compilation incoming! Limerick, Ireland label Subtle Audio put out a series of great 2 or 3CD compilations in the mid-’00s with early drumfunk and jungle-inclined drum’n’bass – at the time it felt like the best source of really great beat production around. Many years later, here’s another 3CD set: Our Atmosphere has 2CDs of original tracks and tracks taken from label releases in a broadly “atmospheric” jungle, drumfunk and drum’n’bass, with a huge list of great producers, plus a DJ mix from label head Code on the 3rd disc. Oh – and the CDs arrived in the mail just as we hit the new year, but the digital version (without the 3rd disc) won’t be available until Feb 6th, so this is a sorta-kinda exclusive of Naarm’s own Kloke, one of many highlights here. Aftawerks & Earl Grey – Swingfunc Jungle [Earl Grey Bandcamp] Nathan Firman aka Aftawerks has been plying his trade in funky acid, IDM & jungle for over a decade, and Jim Earl Grey released an EP of his on his Hyperchamber Music label way back in 2013. I’m a pretty big fan of Earl Grey (in fact I first heard his stuff on those Subtle Audio comps back in the day!) and this collaboration between the two is just mad shit in the best way. Homemade Weapons – Leviathan (HW Remix) [Weaponist/Bandcamp] Seattle’s Homemade Weapons has his own particular take on the minimal/tribal drum’n’bass championed by Samurai Records, and as well as releasing on that label (and others) he runs his own label, Weaponist. The latest label release is the Bumura EP from the artist himself, with two new tracks and two remixes he’s made of tracks that were originally collabs – tonight’s cut was originally made with Sacramento’s Red Army. I do appreciate the way that elements of jungle are dropped into the very minimal d’n’b feel. BMA – Middle Age REFLEKT [Industrial Coast/Bandcamp] Moa Pillar – Fight Them Back [Industrial Coast/Bandcamp] The Industrial Coast label is based in Middlesborough, about an hour’s drive south of Newcastle, so fairly grim-up-north territory (I actually lovely Newcastle when I played there last year). The label is pretty dedicated to the cassette as a format, and generally most of the music on Bandcamp is unavailable digitally without the physical objects (set at £999) – but they do do retrospective compilations, and open up other releases briefly at times. So Deconstructed Reconstructed Retrospective is a double-compilation, in that it collects tracks from the labels Deconstructed/Reconstructed series of compilations in which industrial & experimental artists cover or remix artists such as Crass or music related to movements like anarcho-punk or Rock Against Racism. With 50 tracks, it covers plenty of ground. Sometimes you can immediately tell who the subject is, sometimes you have to try and look it up, and artists appear under various guises too – such as Iceman Junglist Kru (lo-fi industrial junglism), half of whom is also Stonecirclesampler (arcane ambient weirdness) aka Liquid DnB-like Ambient Grime 2… Unfortunately it’s long enough after it went up that it’s now priced at £999, but you can still stream the tracks. Tonight, US drum’n’bass producer BMA takes on hardcore punk originals Minor Threat, while London-based Russian deconstructed trance guy Moa Pillar does a tribute to Linton Kwesi Johnson. Travis Cook – fight_clown [Travis Cook Bandcamp] Adelaide’s Travis Cook, ex-Collarbones, continues releasing a track a week on his Bandcamp. This one’s all stuttery vocal samples and a smattering of beats. John Wall – Iconvt [John Wall Bandcamp] The ineffable John Wall stands somewhere between glitch & computer music, musique concrète, plunderphonics, and free jazz. Astonishingly, he didn’t start making music until he was 40 (in 1990). He’s worked with the cream of UK free jazz, and I’ve also featured a fair bit of his work with spoken word poet Alex Rodgers – here’s an example. He recently revisited his 1999 Constructions I-IV, which combined samples from live improvisers with samples of modern classical compositions, in order to remove the deliberate glitch-sound, which he now finds ugly (although I’m not the only one who likes that sound!) But now he’s put a single new track called “Iconvt“, which sounds like a command-line tool (iconv in Linux is a command that converts a string to a different character encoding). The source sounds here are not obviously revealed – it sounds mostly electronic; there are some fairly inscrutable quotes in the description, plus a reference to fellow avant-gardist Sunik Kim. But the music is some of the least-inscrutable stuff Wall has done, with rumbling bass, quite a bit of melody, and a fair bit of glitch, all things considered! Low Flung – Niksen [Low Flung Bandcamp] Eora/Sydney musician Danny Wild has been Low Flung for a long while now, and tends to lean more ambient than beat-driven. On his last release from 2025, Type-D we find him in a contemplative mood, but also in a dub techno mode – the first track has a super slow tempo with percussive chatter around the edges, but the other two tracks are faster but no less dubby. SAWT – Phase Collapse [Beacon Sound/Bandcamp] T. Gowdy – 00L00 [Beacon Sound/Bandcamp] Excellent Portland, Oregon label Beacon Sound enlists many brilliant friends to contribute to their important new compilation Gaza is the Moral Compass, benefiting on-the-ground mutual aid groups in Gaza. The organisers point out that Israel has violated the so-called ceasefire hundreds of times; Israel’s fascist government is joined by Donald Trumps’ fascist governmnent in trying to remake the Middle East while Australia’s Labor governments are falling over themselves to protect the interests of a foreign state, at least partially in the name of “Jewish safety” which as a Jew I categorically reject. Cultural practice is not neutral, the organisers remind us, and that includes what art/music/culture you consume and how you do so. So here we have many artists associated with the Constellation label, artists originally from Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq and Egypt, and indeed Japan – the quality is incredibly high throughout, and all the music is exclusive to the comp (for now). SAWT is Kamel Badarneh, based in Brussels, whose contribution is a nice piece of throbbing techno, while Constellation’s T. Gowdy does his shimmering sample-shifting thing but with an Arabic-sounding sound source. Filippo Ansaldi & Simone Sims Longo – +1 [Umor Rex/Bandcamp] Filippo Ansaldi & Simone Sims Longo – Illusione [Umor Rex/Bandcamp] A few years ago, Italian musician Simone Sims Longo released a brilliant electro-acoustic album called Paesaggi integrati (integrated landscapes) on the great Dutch label Esc.rec – still one of my favourites on the label. There, he processed the sounds of various acoustic instruments; on Solo Suono, Sims Longo is working with saxophonist Filippo Ansaldi, and it’s his instrument that he’s processing. At times we’re hearing the saxophone solo, or multi-tracking into beautiful chordal movement; elsewhere the instrument is splintered and looped. The saxophone is an instrument uniquely suited to experimental approaches, and Ansaldi and Sims Longo here go deep into some of its sonic possibilities. Dual Dialect – Conglomerate III – Meme-leak Mosaic [4000 Records/Bandcamp] Speaking of sax, Meanjin/Brisbane’s Dual Dialect feature Andrew Garton of Ghostwoods on “mutant saxophone” alongside Andrew Foley of Grids/Units/Planes, YEARNS etc, creating disintegrated beats and abstract pads according to their very accurate Instagram bio. But there’s some surprisingly blissful stuff here too – a kind of jazz fusion that hints at downtempo stuff from the ’90s, Jon Hassell’s fourth world work in the ’80s, and post-’00s glitchy electronics. Recommended. Aroma – After The Rain [Urban Trout Records/Bandcamp] And we finish tonight with a collaboration by an artist whose debut album with Eora/Sydney jazz piano quartet Aronas was a defining work for the early days of Utility Fog (you can stream Culture Tunnels on SoundCloud and elsewhere). Pianist & composer Aron Ottignon had moved to Sydney from New Zealand (his brother Matt still plays around this city in many ensembles), and the group embodied the post-jazz feel, at least on record, that sat perfectly with the UFog sound. Aron soon decamped to the UK & Europe, embedding traditional musics from around the world into his art (Aronas’ album Culture Tunnels was influenced by South Pacific rhythms). Now the Aroma project sees Aron playing the Osmose “expressive synth” alongside singer, sound-artist, label head & Afro-futurist Nina Kahle. This song, recorded in Senegal, is their take on the beautiful John Coltrane tune “After The Rain”, using the multiple gestures the Osmose adds to each individual key of the piano keyboard, with Kahle’s vocals and field recordings ebbing and flowing.
In this first of two programmes, Hannah French explores the lives of two 16th Century Popes: Leo X and Clement VII, and the music that surrounded them.Giovanni & Giulio were cousins, brought up together in the wealthy and influential Florentine household of the Medicis. Giovanni's father, Lorenzo "The Magnificent" and his brother Giuliano were the rulers of the Florentine Republic. In 1478, though, Giuliano de Medici was murdered in Florence Cathedral as part of the Pazzi Conspiracy. As a result, young Giulio was brought up by his uncle. Both boys were guided into a career in the church, and because of the financial and political backing that came with the Medici name, it was clear they were both destined for high office. In 1513, Giovanni de Medici was elected as Pope Leo X. He made Rome a strong political power, and as a generous patron of the arts, he helped writers, poets, painters and musicians of the High Renaissance to flourish. But, his lavish tastes depleted the papal treasury, and made many enemies who accused him of being "engrossed in idle and selfish amusements". By 1517, would-be reformers in northern Europe had had enough of papal excesses, and Martin Luther published his 95 theses which were to be the start of the Protestant Reformation. The young Giovanni de Medici was said to have had a fine ear and a melodious voice, and "loved music to the pitch of fanaticism". It's possible he learned from the great Heinrich Isaac, who was the shining musical light in late 15th Century Florence. As Pope Leo X he expanded the Sistine Chapel choir, and procured the services of professional singers, instrumentalists and composers from all over Europe.
Hannah French with the second of two programmes exploring the lives of two 16th Century Popes: Leo X and Clement VII, and the music that surrounded them.Having been brought up together in the wealthy and influential Florentine household of the Medicis, cousins Giovanni & Giulio were always destined for greatness. As Pope Leo X, Giovanni was a lavish patron of the arts. He sanctioned major renovations on St Peter's Basilica in Rome, extended the Sistine Chapel Choir, promoted the study of Greek, Arabic & Hebrew, commissioned works from artists such as Raphael & Peruzzi, and maintained a private orchestra as well as the official papal musicians. In order to fund these lavish artistic interests, Leo X encouraged the purchase of indulgences - remissions of the temporal punishment for sins – which could only be afforded by the most wealthy. Leo was also portrayed by his opponents as a man of gross excess; there were suggestions of sexual impropriety, favouritism and immorality, all of which were fuel to the fire of the burgeoning Protestant Reformation in northern Europe. Needless to say, Leo spent way above the papal means, and when he died suddenly in 1521, the papal treasury was 400,000 ducats in debt. Leo's right-hand man throughout his papacy was his beloved cousin, Giulio de Medici. Within three months of Leo's election as Pope, Giulio had been made Archbishop of Florence, and just three more months down the line, he was appointed Cardinal of Santa Maria in Dominica. By 1517, Cardinal Giulio was made Vice-Chancellor of the Church (ie, second in command). He became deeply involved in the politics of England, France and the Holy Roman Empire, which would eventually backfire on him spectacularly…When Cardinal Giulio was elected to the heady heights of the Papacy in 1523, as Pope Clement VII, little did he know the struggles that lay ahead. There was already the threat of the Lutherans from northern Europe and the Turks were making in-roads into the east. Plus, there was the childish squabbling of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and King Francis I of France, who both demanded the Pope choose a side, leading to the Sack of Rome in 1527. And six years later, he had Henry VIII's divorce to deal with. All of this while having to impose austerity measures in an attempt to pay off some of the debts left by his own cousin!Like his cousin, Pope Clement VII was also a gifted musician. It's likely he too learned from the great composer Heinrich Isaac while growing up in Florence, and over the years he had dealings with the likes of Nicolas Gombert, Jean Mouton, Philippe Verdelot and Costanzo Festa as the music of the High Renaissance swirled around him.

A Mystery in FlorenceIn Tuscany there is so much magic: hills decorated with olive trees, vineyards and cypresses, bell towers ringing everywhere, hidden gardens, and of course enchanted cities, full of history and beauty, where famous artists have created marvellous works of art.In this tale we find ourselves in the city of Florence, where magic abounds and legends hide in every corner.A river called the Arno runs through it; and amongst the many bridges there is one that quite rightly is a bit more famous than the others: the Ponte Vecchio. In those suspended houses no one lives anymore. Every day it is full of tourists who photograph it and come to visit from all over the world, but many, many years ago on this bridge there were butchers, fishmongers and tanners as if it were a market, a square suspended over the Arno and daily life was very different from today. At the time of this story the shops were all jewellery stores owned by master goldsmiths, who lived there, worked and sold gold jewellery and precious items of the highest quality. It was one of the hearts of the city where the Florentines of the time would meet and stop to chat whilst they came and went from one side of the river to the other. Even the children spent their days having fun playing and running from one side to the other undisturbed. At this point you must know that for some days small thefts had been occurring in the artisans' shops. Gold and precious items disappeared as if stolen by the wind, silently and by surprise, without leaving a trace. Who knows who knows? Who could be the culprit? The goldsmiths gathered together, after closing their shops, right there on the bridge."But what on earth is happening?" said one."Well, if only we knew..." said another."And we can't go on like this, looking like fools!"Bernardo, one of the goldsmiths, said: "Granted I'm a bit absent-minded, but I'm certainly not blind enough not to see if gold is missing from my shop."And off they went asking questions and interrogating each other to try to find an explanation for these thefts, discover the thief and perhaps recover what was stolen. In short, it had been weeks now that gold filings from the working of gold and various precious objects had been disappearing from the shops — and all this was happening under everyone's eyes but no one had seen anything.Who to blame if not those mischievous rascals who enjoyed playing football on the bridge! Between little matches, laughter, running, various games and hide-and-seek, who knows if one of them hadn't started stealing here and there.More days passed and more gold had vanished into thin air. The goldsmiths, tired of this business, came out onto the bridge and shouted loudly all together: "Now we've really had enough and it's time to put an end to it! Let's catch the thief!"Even Giulio the baker came out to the doorway of his shop, on the left, at the end of the bridge, and although he hadn't understood precisely what was happening, he showed everyone his flour-covered hands shouting: "I've got nothing to do with it, I swear! My hands are covered in dough only because I'm always preparing focaccia to bake in the oven."And saying this he joined the others shouting: "Let's catch the thief red-handed before that sack becomes one of flour!"In that commotion, Lapo, a very clever and curious boy, son of the goldsmith Bernardo who was friends with everyone and played together with the other children on the bridge, after reflecting thought: "There's something that doesn't add up: we children don't steal, whose fault can it be?"So Lapo decided to investigate on his own. Because as his grandfather always told him: "one thing done is worth more than a hundred to do" and then he would add that "if you do it yourself you do for three."So, without much ado, the following evening he organised himself, getting hold of a magnifying glass, a notebook with pencil to take notes and a lantern that would accompany him in the dark. The latter he held tight with a slightly trembling hand, but there was no hesitation — the situation wouldn't resolve itself. At dusk, he set off from the Ponte Vecchio, where he lived with his father above the shop, towards the column in Piazza Santa Trinità.Up there was, and still is, the Statue of Justice that towered so high as to touch the sky. The journey wasn't long, but that evening it took him longer than usual, because he observed everything with attention and curiosity. He looked right, left, in the narrow streets, beyond the parapet of the Lungarno and if he saw a stone he moved that too: "you never know where you might find clues" he thought. He had heard it said that the column and the statue of Justice were magical and full of secrets. But the most amazing thing was that from its summit, where indeed the statue stood, one could see what was happening at every point in the city — as we know justice sees and knows everything.Having arrived in Piazza Santa Trinita, he gave a great sigh, took one last step and at the foot of the column — what a surprise... he met a snail."A snail?" you will say. "Eh, exactly a snail complete with house on its shoulders, with lights on at the windows and a fireplace lit" Really, I tell you... Believe it... In short it was there, moving, slowly yes, but determined. When it heard the light step of the unexpected visitor, it became suspicious and withdrawing its antennae as if they were brakes, it stopped dead and said:"Halt! Who goes there? But who are you and where are you going? You're not looking for trouble, are you, wandering about all alone at this twilight hour?""No, what trouble... quite the opposite Mrs Snail" replied Lapo, "I should go to the top of the column to see what's happening on the Ponte Vecchio. There are things that don't quite add up and I'm investigating. As you can see I even have the magnifying glass and hat!" Said Lapo showing the objects to avoid misunderstandings. "Now, since you seem to be from around here, you wouldn't happen to know how I can get up there?"The snail who lived at the foot of the column and was to all intents and purposes its guardian, huffed but then smiled and showed Lapo a small door at the foot of the column, hidden by ivy."Dearest Lapo," she said adjusting her spectacles "you seem like a brave boy, a true friend and also a good investigator, but only from the top of the column will you be able to know the truth."Having said this, the snail rubbed her tentacles and they began to shine with a magical light that enveloped Lapo making him become the height of the door which opened with a great creak; so sharp as to make all the birds that were hanging about in the night fly away.Lapo, now very small, thanked the snail and without fear entered inside the column. In the darkness, he was impressed by a narrow and high well that went up instead of down. On the gleaming walls there was a spiral of tiny steps that he began to climb with determination with the lit lantern held tight in his hand. He reached the top.In the night the starry sky illuminated the Statue of Justice that towered over Florence. It had a scale with two balanced plates in one hand and a golden sword in the other. As we said previously, by enchantment, from there one could see the whole city — one just had to look in the right direction and think of the part of Florence you wanted to see: an incredible magic for a breathtaking view. Now was the moment to concentrate on the Ponte Vecchio and try to solve the mystery of the thefts, but whilst moving around the statue, to go to the side that looked towards the river, he made an incredible discovery. He couldn't believe his own eyes — so much so that he took out the magnifying glass to be sure. Both plates of the scale were full of gold filings and precious trinkets."Good heavens! And how did this stuff get up here?" Exclaimed Lapo with wide eyes. "This is undoubtedly the loot from the thefts at the jewellery shops!"At first, confused and amazed he didn't know what to think, but then, observing the filings more carefully he realised they were all woven together with bracelets and necklaces: these were two nests and an idea immediately flashed into his mind."The thieving magpies!" Exclaimed Lapo. Those crafty birds love everything that glitters, it must certainly have been them who robbed the shops and brought the stolen goods up here. And in the middle of this thought, suddenly they appeared in flight. They landed on the column agitated and furious "KRAA KRAA KRAA! Oh, little boy but what are you doing at our home? Don't you even dare touch these glittering marvels; they are our nest, we found them and they are ours."Lapo didn't let himself be frightened and calmly replied: "But what are you saying? You like glittering things that shine and you take them, but that certainly doesn't mean they are yours."The magpies were all chattering together they seemed to have gone mad and knew no reason. "But what is this one saying?" Said one. "Right, someone comes to our home and expects to give orders?" Added another. "Yes, nice joke. They're not ours? But are you a comedian? Change job, look, because you don't make us laugh." Said another. And all of them laughing. At which Lapo didn't let himself be intimidated. He rummaged in his pocket and found what he was looking for. He proposed an exchange. "What if we made a deal. To tell the truth I lose out quite a bit, but I like you so much that I would gladly give you these beautiful shiny marbles in exchange for the gold and trinkets."Seeing those small brilliant and colourful treasures, which they had never seen before, the magpies calmed down. They looked at each other with a crafty look and without hesitation... "Deal!"They took the marbles from his hand in a flash and flew away shouting: "Hooray, we're rich! From now on we'll collect these little balls."Sighing with relief and satisfaction, Lapo recovered the stolen goods and rushed down from the column. The snail was waiting for him applauding. With another spell she made him come out of the little door and appear right on the Ponte Vecchio where several Florentines were taking the evening air and chatting — including the goldsmiths."Papa, papa I've discovered the mystery and found the culprit, it was the thieving magpies! My friends didn't do anything wrong." "Calm down son, I'm listening". Replied Bernardo.Lapo with all the breath he had in his throat didn't waste a moment and told everything he had discovered and seen: the investigator's hat, the magnifying glass, the magical snail who knew the secrets of the column, the little door, the statue at the top, the view of Florence, the thieving magpies and the trick with the coloured marbles. Finally the mystery of the strange thefts was clarified, all the recovered stolen goods were returned to the goldsmiths of the Ponte Vecchio thanks to the enterprising and brave Lapo.At that point everyone who was on the Ponte Vecchio applauded shouting: "hooray, hooray, hooray, for the little investigator."Whilst the ancient bridge, perhaps enchanted, gleamed with golden lights.Giulio the baker whilst putting focaccia in the oven, sang merrily and with a ringing voice announced: "today focaccia for everyone free of charge, we must celebrate!"The thieving magpies returned to flying; they continued to find small objects and even pieces of glittering dreams; and chattering they said: "It may well be that we've lost a nest, but we've certainly found a story to tell."And perhaps, who knows, there will be a new story!— Written by Lucia & Marco Ciappelli [Inspired by a Florentine legend] Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Frankie Val sits down with Giulio Anselmo for a fascinating exploration into the mechanics of the unconscious mind and the transformative potential of hypnosis. Giulio shares his journey from discovering hypnosis to mastering it as both an art and science, explaining how subconscious programming shapes thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. The conversation uncovers how hypnosis can bypass mental resistance, dissolve limiting beliefs, and help people rewrite the narratives holding them back. They discuss common myths, the difference between stage hypnosis and therapeutic practice, and real-world examples of breakthroughs Giulio has witnessed. Frankie brings his own curiosity and humor to the mix, diving into the ethical responsibilities of a hypnotist, the role of suggestion, and the delicate balance between influence and consent. This episode is a blend of science, psychology, and personal growth, offering listeners both insight and practical takeaways for tapping into the deeper layers of the mind.
