Suspiria (1977), Inferno (1980), and Mother of Tears (2007) There are very few horror fans out there who don't know the work of Dario Argento, especially the giallo films he's most famous for. While he only occasionally ventured into supernatural horror, whenever he did, he approached it with the same unmistakable style that defines all of his work. After helping define the giallo genre with Deep Red, Argento shifted gears and gave us Suspiria, a film that presented violence through a blinding explosion of color and an intense soundtrack that pounds through the speakers. It looked unlike anything audiences had really seen before. Three years later, Argento continued the saga of the dreaded Three Mothers with Inferno, expanding the mythology surrounding these wicked witches even further. Then, after a 27-year wait, he completed the trilogy with Mother of Tears. Say what you will about any or all of these films, but they are all unmistakably Dario Argento. In this episode, we're taking a look at all three entries in the Three Mothers trilogy, exploring both the mythology behind the Three Mothers and the unique qualities that set each film apart. We all have our favorite of the trilogy, but hopefully you'll come away with a new appreciation for moments or ideas you may have overlooked in previous viewings. So join us for our little study group as we dive into the worlds of Mater Suspiriorum, Mater Tenebrarum, and Mater Lachrymarum. But a word of caution… they don't like people knowing about them, so be warned. It's a quiet, unsettling masterpiece that lingers long after the final frame.Now, I'm sure it's a wonderful film. Truly. I take Clay and Amanda at their word. But I do have to point out a small personal complication: I, uh… don't have eyes. I have a face, mind you—perfectly good face, all things considered—but eyes? Not part of the package. So when I sat down to watch Eyes Without a Face, I quickly realized I might not be the target audience.I tried, I really did. I listened closely. The footsteps, the dialogue, the unsettling music—it all sounded very atmospheric. I imagine there were some striking visuals happening as well. People often mention a mask? A very creepy mask? I'm sure it's fantastic. I just… can't confirm that personally.Still, Clay and Amanda do an excellent job walking through the film for those of us who, for whatever reason, might not be able to see it. They describe the performances, the tone, and the infamous surgical sequences in vivid detail—which is both helpful and, frankly, a little distressing.So if you're blessed with eyes, definitely give this one a watch. In My Skin (2002), Inside (2007), and Martyrs (2008) While the French aren't widely known for their horror films, when they do enter the genre, it's often something special. A perfect example is Georges Franju's Eyes Without a Face (1960). With its stark realism and dark themes, it established a tone of discomfort and unease that still feels powerful today. In the early 2000s, a new wave of younger filmmakers took that sense of unease and pushed it much further, deliberately testing the limits of what audiences could tolerate. These films were often graphic, sometimes over-the-top, and frequently dealt with disturbing subject matter that lingered even when the violence or gore wasn't shown onscreen. Often, it wasn't what you saw that was hardest to watch, but the subject itself and the way it was presented. In this episode, we take on three titles that demonstrate the range of this movement, from deeply subversive and uncomfortable subject matter to films that push gore to extreme levels, while still challenging the viewer intellectually and emotionally. These are films that don't just shock in the moment, they can leave you unsettled for days after they end. That's powerful filmmaking. It'sbeen 25 years since Katie became the first person in history to broadcast a colonoscopy on national TV. She lost her husband to colon cancer in 1998. He was only 42. One of the most famous homes in American history is opening its doors to the public for the first time ever. The "Brady Bunch" house in North Hollywood will be accessible to fans on November 7th, 8th, and 9th. And while bookings are sold out, you can register to be on a waitlist, or be notified if additional dates become available. When the show was in production back in the day, the house was only used for EXTERIOR shots. The inside of the Brady home was created on a soundstage, and the inside of the actual house looked nothing like it. But HGTV bought the house in 2018, and renovated it so that it DOES match the house from the show. And of course, they recorded it for a series called "A Very Brady Renovation". Alyssa Milano, now 52, announced on Instagram that she underwent surgery to remove her breast implants—calling it a step toward reclaiming her body. 1952's Stolen Face was an early Hammer Films production.  The British studio, which would later become synonymous with thrillers and horror films, also churned out it's fair share of melodramas and comedies. Billy Idol sold his hedonistic act & lifestyle to MTV in the 80s and it was a match made in heaven. Thanks to Billy's snarling sexuality and his mix of hard rock with new wave thanks to longtime collaborator Steve Stevens, Billy used the fledgling cable channel as not a springboard but a rocketship to superstardom. He'd already received attention and airplay thanks to White Wedding and with 4 singles off of Rebel Yell Billy's star rose to great heights in the US. However, in his home country of the UK, Billy didn't enjoy the same success. Maybe due to no MTV or perhaps the fact that the English public saw him as a punk and wouldn't consider him as a pop/rock singer, this album only achieved silver status in England while going double platinum in the US. The singles Rebel Yell (names after a chance encounter with The Rolling Stones), Eyes Without a Face (named after a French horror film), Flesh for Fantasy (also swiped from an old movie) and Catch My Fall, Billy had 4 charting singles and 4 videos that we talk about in-depth on the show. This was the album that allows him to still tour & perform to this day and while some of the songs sound like they were recorded in 1983, some are timeless relics of the cassette era.
