Directed by Georges Franju and released in 1960, Eyes Without a Face tells the story of a genius plastic surgeon who is determined to restore his daughter's beauty after a car accident led to her disfigurement. Driven by guilt, remorse, and regret he and his assistant attempt to transplant the faces of unfortunate young women while his daughter is locked in his mansion, sedated, and made to wear a mask to hide her true face. A film that delves into some deep themes its as much poetry as it is shocking and horrific, a perfect mix for your rolodex this spooky season.

In this episode, we return to the 1960s to discuss the history of horror and the influential films of the decade but this time we have broadened our scope to include international films - hence the part 2. We will do a mini recap of major historical events of the 1960s and where horror was at with experimental films like Psycho (1960), Peeping Tom (1960) and Blood Feast (1963) shocking audiences leading to the rebirth of zombies with Night of the Living Dead (1968). Then we will leave North America to talk about what horror was doing in countries like Japan, France and Great Britain with the films Kuroneko (1968), Eyes Without a Face (1962) and Horror of Dracula (1958). Enjoy and welcome to our dark side… *Note: We are aware that Horror of Dracula was released in 1958, however, we have included this film in the 1960s as it was a film that signaled the rise of Hammer Horror in the UK in the 1960s leading into the 1970s* Intro/Outro Music: Kiss of the Creature by Dance with the Dead Artwork by: Jess Hrycyk Editing work by: Jessica

1952's Stolen Face was an early Hammer Films production.  The British studio, which would later become synonymous with thrillers and horror films, also churned out it's fair share of melodramas and comedies. This film, about a heartbroken plastic surgeon who physically transforms a prisoner into the woman who jilted him, stars Lizabeth Scott, Paul Henreid, Andre Morell and Mary Mackenzie and set the stage for films like Vertigo, Eyes Without a Face and The Skin I Live In.   Dan and Vicky discuss their thoughts on Stolen Face along with some recently seen:  Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's Restless Leg Tour, Feud: Capote and the Swans, Lisa Frankenstein, and several more films on the Sight & Sound best films ever list.  Check us out on all our socials:  hotdatepod.com FB:  Hot Date Podcast Twitter: @HotDate726 Insta:  hotdatepod

Somewhere on the outskirts of Paris, a woman, Louise, is driving alone at night.  There's a body in the back seat of her car.  Its face is obscured, and it's slumped over, lifeless. Because said body is a corpse, and Louise is soon dragging it into the Seine.  Meanwhile, after giving a speech about the perils and pleasures of skin grafts, a doctor, Genessier, is called to the morgue to identify a body.  It is that of his missing daughter?  So he claims.  On his way out, Gennessier is accosted by a man, Tessot, who asks if the body is that of his missing daughter, Simone.  Gennessier tells him no, it's his daughter, and that's that.  But back at the doctor's home/clinic is indeed his daughter, Christiane, alive and well, but hiding behind a white mask that obscures a badly scarred face, the result of a recent car accident.  The police, meanwhile, are suspicious – who is the body in the river, and why is IT missing its face?  And why does it appear someone surgically removed said face with a scalpel?  Louise, meanwhile, has located and lured a new facial donor / candidate / victim back to the clinic, a victim who's soon undergoing a gruesome surgery that may or may not spell freedom, as it were, for poor faceless Christiane Genessier. This week, Season 2 Episode 6 - "Eyes without Pity"!Check out our live reaction video! ~~~As the episodes of THE WHEEL OF TIME show release, Ali and Gus will be bringing their experience in the entertainment industry to the table to do an analysis of the adaptational choices made in the process of bringing THE WHEEL OF TIME from the page to the screen. These episodes are broken into three categories:1) "I am a show-only fan" - folks who have never picked up a WHEEL OF TIME book can listen to the first (and longest) part of our episodes, where we analyze the adaptation insofar as it covers what it has already covered in the books.2) "I am a Wheel Takes listener" - folks who are current with our book discussion episodes can continue into our second section, where we discuss the long-term logic behind (and ramifications of) choices made by the adaptation as far as Ali has read.3) "I'm fully spoiled" - folks who have finished THE WHEEL OF TIME can stick around for thoughts from Gus (and Bree) on the choices made by the adaptation from a fully spoiled perspective. We do not recommend skipping sections wholesale, as each builds on what comes before it.~~~Show material covered in this episode: S2E06 - "Eyes Without Pity"CHECK YOUR PODCAST PLAYER'S CHAPTERS FOR INFORMATION ON WHEN EACH SECTION STARTS - THE BELOW TIMESTAMPS DO NOT ACCOUNT FOR ADVERTISEMENTS, WHICH VARY IN LENGTH BY REGIONPart 1 of our discussion does NOT spoil any distinct show mysteries but discusses elements from the books without spoiling them.Part 2 begins at 3:55:30 and contains SPOILERS through CHAPTER 4 of KNIFE OF DREAMSThere is no Part 3 for this episode.~~~Check out our TWITTER, INSTAGRAM, and TIKTOKCheck out our Patreon at patreon.com/wheeltakesEmail us at wheeltakespodcast@gmail.comUS-friendly MERCHANDISE: https://www.zazzle.com/store/wheeltakesmerch/productsEurope-friendly MERCHANDISE: https://wheel-takes-merch.myspreadshop.co.uk/allSend us a card!Wheel Takes PodcastP.O. Billy Idol sold his hedonistic act & lifestyle to MTV in the 80s and it was a match made in heaven. Thanks to Billy's snarling sexuality and his mix of hard rock with new wave thanks to longtime collaborator Steve Stevens, Billy used the fledgling cable channel as not a springboard but a rocketship to superstardom. He'd already received attention and airplay thanks to White Wedding and with 4 singles off of Rebel Yell Billy's star rose to great heights in the US. However, in his home country of the UK, Billy didn't enjoy the same success. Maybe due to no MTV or perhaps the fact that the English public saw him as a punk and wouldn't consider him as a pop/rock singer, this album only achieved silver status in England while going double platinum in the US. The singles Rebel Yell (names after a chance encounter with The Rolling Stones), Eyes Without a Face (named after a French horror film), Flesh for Fantasy (also swiped from an old movie) and Catch My Fall, Billy had 4 charting singles and 4 videos that we talk about in-depth on the show. This was the album that allows him to still tour & perform to this day and while some of the songs sound like they were recorded in 1983, some are timeless relics of the cassette era. This week, Aaron and Derek embrace their inner Martin Scorsese "this is...cinema." They discuss 1960's French horror film "Eyes Without a Face" directed by Georges Franju. They talk about what makes the doctor the true monster, how the surgery scene is still shocking, the influence this movie has had on pop culture, and how it was censored and marketed in the United States. They also get into about Édith Scob's ethereal performance, what makes the ending amazing, and many other aspects of the film. Derek's face frightens him. Aaron's mask frightens him even more.
