On this episode of The Recommended podcast we are talking about Twister. With Glen Powell no where in site the boys settle for some discussion about Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. Ryker astounds Brenden with his vocabulary, and Brenden is pining after Aunt Meg. Enjoy this episode of the podcast because it's practically its own food group.
Welcome to the suck zone. We have Aunt Meg's Gravy meal that took two days to make. The gravy is famous it's practically a food group. Eminent rueage at Mac N Cheese Movies. We talk about the tornado chasing playlists, Jan De Bont, Steven Spielberg and Bill Paxton. This movie is about science and the ultimate sin of the 90s....selling out. Would Garth Brooks have been good in this movie? One thing we took away is gravy might be the best thing to come out of this movie.

Don't ask to see Aunt Meg's place when you venture out to Wakita in far-northern Oklahoma—if you remember Twister well enough, you know the house doesn't make it to the end credits. But die-hard fans of the 1996 cult-classic disaster film won't be disappointed when they visit the tiny town's Twister Movie Museum—dedicated to telling the story of Wakita's brush with Hollywood since before the movie even premiered. As the long-awaited sequel Twisters hits theaters across the country this week, we venture out to the museum for an interview with its caretaker, Linda Wade. With Twister fever back at a fever pitch, visitors from all over the world are making the trek out to Wakita. Also on this week's episode, the editors discuss which movies they have seen the most in their lives, and podvents tells us the story of two peaches. Plus Karlie is back! You won't want to miss it!
Bible Reading: Isaiah 51:6-8, 11; 1 Peter 1:23-25"I'm glad you came to help me today, Danielle," Aunt Meg said as the two of them explored the cluttered attic. They laughed at their discoveries as they sorted through boxes, getting ready for a garage sale. Aunt Meg picked up a box. "I think my doll Rosie should be around here somewhere.""Is this it?" Danielle asked. "It sure is--my little Rosie! I played with her all the time when I was your age." Aunt Meg took the doll and settled its soft body into the crook of her arm like a real baby. Its round face smiled up at her. "These dolls were very popular when I was a kid," said Aunt Meg. "They came with birth certificates and adoption papers, and people were crazy about them. Rosie was a birthday gift from my parents." She looked at the doll thoughtfully. "I still remember a message our pastor gave the Christmas before I got Rosie. People stood in line for hours and paid big money for these dolls. Pastor Burton told us they would eventually lose their appeal and popularity. He reminded us that material possessions can never bring fulfillment and lasting joy. Only Jesus can satisfy our hearts--and the gift He offers of eternal life with Him is free." She handed the doll back to Danielle. "Pastor Burns was right. I don't get excited about these dolls anymore--or about a lot of other things that were popular once. Look at all the stuff in this attic." She smiled. "But I still get excited when I think about Jesus and all He's done for me. He fills me with joy every day!" Danielle looked at the doll. "Rosie is nice, but I can't believe you got that excited over something like this." Aunt Meg's eyes twinkled. "Oh, I think I know someone who has a pretty large doll collection of her own."Danielle giggled. "Yeah, I guess I did always want to have whatever dolls were popular with my friends when I was younger. Most of them aren't so popular anymore though. Maybe I'll sell some of them at our garage sale." "Popular items change continually," said Aunt Meg. "But Jesus is always the same. He's a gift we can always get excited about!" -A. J. SchutHow About You?Do you have things that have lost their appeal? Are there new things that are popular now you wish you could get? Material things only satisfy for a brief time. You soon grow tired of them, or they become outdated. But the gift of eternal life Jesus offers us is absolutely free, and He brings joy that lasts forever! Accept His gift today. Bible Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:19-23Kaden nudged his sister. "I wonder why Uncle Kurt moves his eyebrows up and down while he's talking," he whispered as their uncle answered a question Dad had asked. "He looks funny!" Ella just shrugged. After a moment, Kaden ventured a question of his own. "Are you glad to be back from the mission field, Uncle Kurt?" Uncle Kurt looked right at Kaden and raised his eyebrows a few times as he spoke. "It's good to be back, but we miss the people we've been working with and the small church we started."After dinner, Kaden and Ella cleared the table while the grown-ups talked. "Ask Uncle Kurt why he moves his eyebrows up and down when he answers questions," Kaden urged his sister."It could just be a nervous habit," said Ella. "Though I noticed Aunt Meg does it sometimes too. Why don't you ask about it?""Maybe I will." After dinner, Kaden finally asked the question. "Uncle Kurt, why do you raise your eyebrows when you talk?"Uncle Kurt laughed out loud. "Have I been doing that? That's one way the people say yes in the village where we work. Now I do it without thinking.""When missionaries go to another country, they often have to learn new gestures as well as a new language," Aunt Meg explained. "At first, many things the people did seemed strange to us, but we expected that. After all, we were in their country, and we certainly couldn't expect them to do things our way."Uncle Kurt nodded. "We remembered the Bible verse where Paul says he adjusted to the people he worked with in order to spread the gospel. We knew we had to do that too so the people in our village could hear about Jesus." "That's something all Christians can do--not just missionaries," Mom said. "When we're open to learning about others who do things differently from us and are willing to be their friend--even if it takes some adjustment--we can share Jesus with them too."Aunt Meg nodded. "We love the people where we live, and we're trusting Jesus to help us develop meaningful relationships with them." -Jorlyn A. GrasserHow About You?Do you know any missionaries? When they move to a foreign country, they need to become familiar with different languages, gestures, food, and customs. They're willing to make those adjustments because they want to tell people about Jesus. Even if you're not a missionary in a foreign country, you can do the same thing where you live. Be willing to put your own preferences aside so you can develop friendships with those who are different from you. Today's Key Verse:Even though I [Paul] am a free man with no master, I have become a slave to all people to bring many to Christ. (NLT) (1 Corinthians 9:19 )Today's Key Thought:Adjust to others
In this quick-fire review of the fast-paced film Twister, Sean confuses Oklahoma with Illinois and Aunt Meg in Twister with Aunt May from the Spiderman films. He also can't seem to make his mind-up about the quality of the film. Thanks for listening!

Today on the podcast, we have book editor, author, professional encourager and just all around amazing human, Amanda Cleary Eastep. I got to meet Amanda several years ago at a writing conference when she was part of a panel representing Moody Publishing. During this conversation she shares what it's like to be a book editor at Moody Publishers, as well as a middle-grade books author, which means she writes books for kids ages 8-12, and we look at what draws us as people to stories that captivate children and adults alike with their unique humor, whimsy, wonder, fun and freedom. We talk quite a bit about the concept of the moral imagination, and how stories can touch parts of us and unlock parts of our imagination and our faith, how we engage good and evil and more. The master of this process is Jesus Himself. His stories affect us emotionally, intellectually, and hold space for us to place ourselves in a story and decide who we will be because of it. Amanda is such a kind and wise woman who is still figuring out how to surrender her life and her dreams to Jesus, and I loved getting to hear how modeling honesty, humility, and just imperfectly but persistently expressing love to the kids in your life matters more than we know. As a Mom, step-Mom, working Mom, and all the things, I love Amanda's reminder that kids may bear witness to some of your greatest failures, but they also can have a front row seat to grace and redemption in your life and that's a story they need to know. I also appreciate how Amanda brought up how to engage kids who are NOT readers with stories whether that's about discussing movies, stories of people in your family or historical stories from where you're from or somewhere they're not, we are surrounded by stories that can engage the hearts and faith of kids. We also round out this episode with my daughter coming on, again, to interview “Ms. Amanda,” and it's sweet and hilarious to hear our girl's insights. Amanda very patiently talked with NB and me about her real life experiences with tornados, feelings and faith and it's just the sweetest.
