Dana and Tom with new guests, Ralph Esparza (Film Producer) and Michael Willoughby (Film Critic/Reviewer) discuss Magnolia (1999) for its 25th Anniversary: written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, music by Jon Brion, starring Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jason Robards, John C. Reilly, and William H. Macy.Plot Summary: Magnolia is a sprawling, kaleidoscopic meditation on the interconnectedness of lives and the consequences of human frailty, directed with audacious ambition by Paul Thomas Anderson. Set in the San Fernando Valley, the film weaves together a mosaic of seemingly disparate characters—each grappling with their own wounds, secrets, and regrets. A dying patriarch seeks closure, a nurse becomes a moral anchor, a game show host confronts buried truths, and a motivational speaker teeters on the edge of self-destruction. What unites them is a shared yearning for forgiveness and redemption, underscored by a sequence of events that defy explanation and culminate in a surreal, unforgettable act of grace.Fueled by Jon Brion's evocative score and Aimee Mann's haunting songs, Magnolia is less a story than an emotional storm, one that challenges, overwhelms, and ultimately lingers in the heart like a plaintive hymn to the mysteries of life.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome to Our Guests02:34 Getting to Know - Ralph Esparza and Michael Willoughby13:12 Cast and Recognition for Magnolia18:07 Relationship(s) to Magnolia24:10 What is Magnolia About?39:32 Plot Summary for Magnolia40:55 Did You Know?44:54 First Break45:33 What's Happening with Ralph and Michael48:39 Ask Dana Anything52:41 Best Performance(s)01:04:07 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)01:15:37 Second Break01:16:16 In Memoriam01:16:57 Best/Funniest Lines01:29:27 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:38:39 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:48:32 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:56:21 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness02:04:26 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability02:09:44 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total02:12:41 Remaining Questions for Magnolia02:16:07 A Thank You to Our Guests and Final Thoughts02:20:50 CreditsGuests:Ralph Esparza (Film Producer)Credited on Tollbooth, The Exorcist's House, Killer Date, and An Occasional Hell@ralph_esparza on IGMichael Willoughby (Film Critic/Reviewer)@skadoooosch on Twitter, IG, and YouTubeYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to:

In the latest episode of the Tim Anderson Podcast, Tim, Ryan, and Lauren dive deep into the stormy chaos of the 1996 classic, Twister. From the very beginning, the team is full of fiery opinions and passionate takes that make for an entertaining and insightful discussion. The trio begins by breaking down the movie's plot—or, more accurately, plots—debating whether Twister juggles too many storylines for its own good. Ryan and Lauren aren't shy about expressing their frustration with the narrative overload, while Tim is fired up, defending the film's chaotic charm. A major point of agreement, however, is the unanimous love for Cary Elwes and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. The hosts argue that the film desperately needed more screen time for these two talents, whose performances were standout highlights. On the flip side, the consensus is that Jami Gertz's character could have been dialed back, with Ryan leading the charge on this critique. Ryan also demands that she pay more taxes. With emotions running high and the opinions sharp, this episode captures the essence of what makes the Tim Anderson Podcast a must-listen for film enthusiasts. The dynamic between the hosts—Ryan's irritation, Lauren's exasperation, and Tim's..... fiery enthusiasm—ensures a lively and engaging discussion that you won't want to miss.

It's an awesome, cheesy, epic disaster flick, and it's still a lot of fun. We've got a top cast (including the late, great Bill Paxton and Phillip Seymour Hoffman), ground-breaking CGI (which looks a little quaint now, but...), and lots of corny dialogue. Get your popcorn ready!Did you know this movie was loaded with backstage drama? Find out all the juicy gossip in this episode. Also, Twister was filmed in Oklahoma, where three of us grew up. On this week's show, the panel gets swept up by Twisters, and begins by discussing director Lee Isaac Chung's standalone sequel starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones. (For the record, the original 1996 disaster flick, Twister, is a near-perfect, Gabfest-approved comfort watch). Sure, Chung's reboot isn't as weird as the original, and the modern-day renderings of completely plausible natural disasters are alarming, but Twisters did what it was supposed to do: deliver a good, generic summer movie where Glen Powell can be, well, Glen Powell. (Read Dana's review! And Sam Adam's take on the film's approach to climate change.) Then, the three dissect Sorry Not Sorry, a documentary from the New York Times that examines Louis C.K.'s public fall from grace in 2017 and the comic's recent comeback, but disappointingly offers little new insight. Finally, the trio tackles gambling and its increasing presence in modern life, inspired by an essay by Christine Emba for The Atlantic. “Suddenly, gambling seems to be everywhere,” Emba writes. “This sort of vice creep, a societal normalization of what used to be seen as unsavory habits—gambling, smoking marijuana, watching porn—is accelerated by people's addiction to devices, in this case giving casual bettors the tools to become compulsive wagerers and easing the way for gambling to become a constant part of life.”  In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel discusses a recent New York Times interactive and dives deep into their relationships with the grocery store. This week on Fabulous Film and Friends we're covering a trio of Neo Noir films set in the city of…where else? Los Angeles, as we discuss 1998's The Big Lewbowski, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen and starring the extraordinary Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, David Huddleston, John Tutturo, Ben Gazara, David Thewlis, Tara Reid, Peter Stormare, Leon Russom and Sam Elliot against 2014's Inherent Vice directed by Paul Thomas Anderson starring Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Benicio Del Toro, Reese Witherspoon, Martin Short, Jena Malone, Maya Rudolph Martin Donovan and Hong Chau, topped off with 2018's Under the Silver Lake  directed by  David Robert Mitchell  and  starring Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, Topher Grace, Grace Van Patten,  Riki Lindhome, Wendy vanden Heuvel, Callie Hernandez, Jimmi Simpson, Zosia Mamet, Jeremy Bob, Rex Lynn, Patrick Fischler and Sydney Sweeney. My guests today are Roseanne Caputi and back by popular demand, Gordon Alex Robertson! Before contemplating the endless currents of depth and consciousness, man, the synopses:  The Big Lebowski,  follows a lot of ins-and-outs and what-have-you's of a very complicated case when two goons working for porn king Jackie Treehorn mistakenly burst into the apartment of Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski  demanding money that his supposed wife Bunny owes Jackie.  Realizing their mistake but still adding the flourish of urinating on the Dude's favorite rug, the pair leaves and gets the hang loose and tolerant Dude's dander up.  Dude the sets off finding the wealthy Jeffrey Lebowski that the pair were looking for and asks him for compensation for his soiled rug. The Big Lebowski flat out refuses the request, calls the Dude a bum, and kicks him out of his house. Surprisingly, a few days later The Big Lebowski summons The Dude to his mansion and asks him to act as a courier to a group of nihilists who have abducted his wife Bunny and are demanding a million dollars in ransom. With his reactionary ‘Nam vet bowling buddy Walter Sobchak at his side, the Dude enters a web of deception, greed and pain as he tries to make sense of the convoluted and problematical condition that he finds himself in.  Inherent Vice ups the ante with ex-cop and junkie P.I. Larry “Doc” Sportello who follows a trail of real estate fraud, heroin smuggling, corrupt federal agents and dentists when his ex-girlfriend Shasta Faye re-enters his life and gives him the tip that her current boyfriend, real estate tycoon Mickey Wolfman, has a wife who is trying to have him committed. With rival LA Police Lt. Detective Christian “Bigfoot” Bjornsen working alternately, with and against him, Doc plows into the labyrinthian case headfirst aided by only his wits and piles of weed and coke in the desperate quest for the truth.  Under the Silver Lake follows a journey through endless hidden messages, conspiracies and millennial self-discovery as perennial slacker Sam tries to uncover the truth regarding the disappearance of his beautiful neighbor Sarah, who vanishes without a trace a day after billionaire industrialist Jefferson Sevence is killed a car crash. Which film best exemplifies the whole L.A. thing? Find out!
