It's Die Hard on a cruise ship!Leeches! Copper poisoning! Vehicles moving very slowly! Or sometimes not at all! That's right folks, it's the sequel nobody asked for! This week, Phil and Liam are cruising for a bruising as they attempt to make sense of the hideously misguided cinematic atrocity that is SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL! Joining them on this voyage into watery oblivion is none other than Kris Tapley, host of the SPEED oral history podcast 50MPH! While on a vacation cruise in the Caribbean with her new boyfriend Alex Shaw (Jason Patric), Annie (Sandra Bullock) and Alex find themselves caught up in a nefarious terror plot orchestrated by John Geiger (Willem Dafoe), a disgruntled computer programmer seeking revenge on the shipping company who screwed him over. Geiger seizes control of the cruise ship's computer systems and threatens to destroy the vessel and everyone on it…so can Alex and Annie foil fiendish Geiger's plan, before the cruise ship crashes? If you're still awake, maybe you'll find out! The guys start by discussing the memories of the movie's release, and their feelings about the prospect of a sequel to Jan De Bont's peerless original classic, 1994's SPEED (aka “DIE HARD on a bus”). They also ponder what might have happened to the DIE HARD franchise, had the same choice been made to replace the leading man action hero with another actor. After talking through the various connections between DIE HARD and SPEED 2 in the ‘DIE HARD DNA' section (including an abandoned DIE HARD sequel with an almost identical premise), the boys break down the film piece by piece, from its ill-conceived premise, to the total betrayal of Annie's character, to the doomed attempt to replace Jack Traven with another gung-ho LAPD SWAT cop and hope nobody minded, to the pitiful villain with a very confused agenda (and a predilection for leeches, lest we forget). This is arguably the worst film that's been covered on the podcast so far…but it might also be the funniest episode yet! This week on the Everything Actioncast, Zach and Chris face the dark side of nature and the 90s disaster classic Twister, as its sequel, Twisters, hits theaters this weekend.Bill Paxton stars as former storm chaser Bill Harding, who reunites with his ex-wife Jo (Helen Hunt) to make sure she has finalized their divorce papers, but he gets pulled back into chasing tornadoes when he finds out Jo and her team have built "Dorothy," a device he and Jo designed to study tornadoes from within. Bill gives Jo one day to try to get Dorothy flying, and his new fiancée, Melissa (Jami Gertz), gets dragged along for the ride. Zach and Chris discuss what would probably really happen if you were super close to an F5 tornado, what Dusty's (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) job on Jo's team is, who is sponsoring the "evil" team led by Cary Elwes, the various mishaps and injuries that happened on set and more. You can watch Twister currently on Max. Next week, we're digging into Logan's past and talking about X-Men Origins: Wolverine as Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters. We want to hear your comments and feedback. Send them all to contact@everythingaction.com. Also, let us know your suggestions for movies for us to discuss. Please subscribe, rate, and review us on Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Spotify, or wherever you get podcasts. Twister, not to be confused with Twisters, is a disaster/thriller directed by complete loose cannon, Jan De Bont. The former Roar DP shoved Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton in a dirty truck and drove them up and down Tornado Alley stopping to shoot at random locations without a concern for coordinator or safety. We appreciate that kind of shoot-by-the-hip filmmaking, as we are shoot-by-the-hip writers who aim to fix a movie in, oh, say an hour. An hour and a half tops! Listen in to our rewrites now!
With the remake/sequel to TWISTER touching down in theaters this weekend, the MovieFilm boys are rejoined by special guest Sean Coyle for a fun yak track talking through the 1996 original starring Helen Hunt & Bill Paxton and directed by Jan De Bont. Listen separately or watch along with us for a fun jaunt through mid-'90s action movie nostalgia -- hopefully you'll be blown away!

In this episode of Overlapping Dialogue, we eagerly head full speed into the danger zone with two thrilling disaster pictures intent on traumatizing their characters and relentlessly entertaining their audiences: Black Sunday and Twister! But before we masochistically chase storms of both the physical and emotional variety, we stock up on a Blue Plate Special selection focusing on some new releases (In a Violent Nature) and filmmakers (Jane Schoenbrun, director of We're All Going to the World's Fair and I Saw the TV Glow) that hopefully suggest that maybe the spirit of cinema isn't dead after all. Eventually, we abandon all decorum and good sense by embracing the chaos of our double feature: join us as we delight in the unabashed 70s-ness of John Frankenheimer's B-movie epic (we also take the opportunity to induct not one but *two* members into our Hall of Fame, the Immune) and celebrate Jan de Bont's fabulous piece of 90s nonsense, filled with more of its era's character actors than any act of nature could every whisk away. Our guest today has one of the most diverse bodies of work of any director we've had on the show. He has worked in multiple genres throughout his decades long career and proven himself to be a filmmaker who kills in any genre space he works in. Having come up in the business along industry friends such as Martin Scorsese and Sydney Pollack, he is part of cinema history as one of the filmmakers creating distinct and memorable work with a style that is unquestionably his own. However, it is a film regarded as one of the best adaptations of Stephen King's most beloved books that has made him an icon of horror In this episode we will be joined by filmmaker Lewis Teague. Often regarded by his peers and fans alike as “underrated”, Lewis first made a name for himself in the genre with the cult classic “Alligator”. Better than anyone thought an Alligator living in the sewer's movie had any right to be, and featuring a bravura performance by lead actor Robert Forster, “Alligator” has gone on to become a favorite of horror fans. Lewis' 1983 adaptation of Stephen King's “Cujo” is considered by many, including King himself, as one of the ultimate King adaptations. With unbearably taught direction, nerve frying cinematography by legendary cinematographer Jan De Bont and a career best performance by genre royalty Dee Wallace, “Cujo” remains untouched in the canon of Stephen King movies. With a great dry sense of humour and uncanny style for storytelling, Lewis shared with me his youth as a bit of a trouble maker before winding up in the military, finding his way in the hay-day of Hollywood auteurs, his ups and downs in show business and his enjoyment in teaching in his later life. So, let's strap into a Ford Pinto and prepare to have our adrenal glands blown with Lewis Teague! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

The wonderful filmmaker who helmed blockbusters like the Speed movies, Twister, Lara Croft 2 and The Haunting remake also previously lensed blockbuster movies for his mentor Paul Verhoeven (Katie Tippel, Turkish Delight, The 4th Man, Flesh + Blood, Basic Instinct) and recurring directors Michael Chapman (All the Right Moves, The Clan of the Cave Bear), Lewis Teague (Cujo, Jewel of the Nile) & John McTiernan (Hunt for Red October, Die Hard). He's also done one-offs as well for other blockbuster filmmakers including Ridley Scott's Black Rain, Joel Schumacher's Flatliners, James Foley's Who's That Girl? and Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon 3. Debuting in theaters in May of 1992, Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon 3 (1992) pulls double duty as being far and away the most profitable of in the franchise, while perhaps also being the least cohesive and satisfying film in the series. On par with Lethal Weapon 2 (1989) in terms of the scale and quality of its action and production design, Lethal Weapon 3 subs in Jan De Bont for Stephen Goldblatt as cinematographer for the production, resulting in silky smooth action shots, and anamorphic lens flares aplenty. The first in the series to be completely divorced from Shane Black's pen, Lethal Weapon 3 is more focused on further crystallizing the characterizations developed over the previous 2 films than actually evolving them. While not lacking for interesting situations for Riggs and Murtaugh to get into, the film very much represents a shift in the priority of the franchise from keeping the plot moving, to providing setups and premises for our immensely affable cast to riff off of. Continuing the trend of growing the Lethal Weapon “family” of characters, the film once again features Joe Pesci, (somehow dialed up beyond the 11 that his character of Leo Getz debuted at in the previous film) and adds Rene Russo to the cast as Lorna Cole, Martin Riggs' high-kicking new love interest. Additionally, Lethal Weapon 3 also features a largely wasted Stuart Wilson as its chief antagonist, as well as a host of familiar genre film favorites such as Sven-Ole Thorsen and Nick Chinlund in generic goon roles. Often very funny, and packed with just enough action and stunts to never be boring, Lethal Weapon 3 is a fine sequel in a remarkably consistent series, however it is often lacking in focus, earning brownie points for featuring social commentary and earnest dramatic elements, but stumbling somewhat in its soggy attempts to tie it all into a cohesive whole. To paraphrase Nelson Wright's first line in the movie, today is a good day to talk about "Flatliners." This beautiful and bizarre 1990 film directed by Joel Schumacher captivated Sarah and Raf as young adults, and they have a lot to say about it. But does it hold up like the museum's giant sculptures...or more like the leaking ceiling?Stylish and moody, "Flatliners" is the story of five ridiculously good-looking medical students who take turns stopping their hearts to experience the afterlife. They perform their deadly hobby in secret, surrounded by dramatic sculptures and murals of Greek gods in a museum undergoing renovations. So, yeah, it's not exactly realistic. According to Sarah, "It is absolutely gorgeous, and it makes absolutely zero sense." But -- at least to our hosts -- this movie doesn't need to make sense to be enjoyed. Its striking symbolism and what Raf dubs "tasteful excess" still look stunning, especially in the recent 4K transfer. "I recognize its flaws," Sarah admits (and the film does have a lot of flaws, like cultural appropriation and misogyny), "but I also love what works about it." Raf notes, "It is one of the front-line members of the goth army," following on the heels of 80s horror classic and fellow Kiefer Sutherland vehicle "The Lost Boys."With Spooky Season just around the corner (or already here, according to our hosts), now's the time to grab your giant pumpkin mask and consider rewatching "Flatliners." It's not for everyone; but if you're in the mood to see character traits expressed in apartment decor, highly pettable hairstyles, and a lot of eerie-looking steam, you just might enjoy seeing it again. Just please don't celebrate with a bonfire on the museum steps.

Cenephile and severe weather head Jackson Boren joins us to discuss 'Twister', one of the biggest hits of 1996. It's a film that takes several well-worn, sometimes quaint, and seemingly disparate cinematic tropes and combines them into a transcendent and irreplicable experience. We discuss the rise and fall of filmmaker Jan de Bont, from his time as one of Paul Verhoeven and John McTiernan's key collaborators, to his work on back-to-back 90s action hits (this film and 1994's 'Speed'), to his gun-for-hire status for the 2003 'Tomb Raider' sequel that stands as his last film as director to date. Then, we talk about the film's host of influences, most notably its screwball comedy premise wrapped in a disaster movie's skin. Finally, we discuss the movie's groundbreaking special effects and champion the film as a state-of-the-art blockbuster spectacle.Follow Jackson on Twitter. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This November is “No Nut November” at Catching Up On Cinema! All month long, we'll be reviewing erotic thrillers from the 80's and 90's! This week Trevor does a solo review of Phillip Noyce's, Sliver (1993)! Released almost exactly one year after her star making turn in the massively successful Basic Instinct (1992), Sliver (1993) saw Sharon Stone return to the erotic thriller subgenre, albeit without the benefit of the one-two punch of Paul Verhoeven's slick and wildly excessive directorial flourishes, and Jan De Bont's sumptuous lighting and lensing. Once again working from a screenplay penned by genre veteran and Hollywood sleaze maestro, Joe Esztherhas; Sliver sees Sharon Stone cast not a femme fatale as in case of the pairings earlier effort, Basic Instinct, but as a weirdly passive, shy woman that may be more sexually adventurous than even she would care to admit. A murder-mystery whodunit that often feels utterly uninterested in detective work or suspense building, Sliver somewhat delivers on the eroticism and thrills one would expect from an erotic thriller, however the connective fiber between the elements, so essential to creating an effective and cohesive genre film, are sorely lacking. Dull and aimless in instances where its handsome and talented cast still have their clothes on, Sliver is not bereft of interesting thematic content or compelling performances, though at the end of the day it all feels very slight and surface level, and sadly doesn't amount to a film that could be considered much more than “adequate” or “serviceable”. Reportedly a troubled production in the form of the MPAA requiring massive reedits to avoid an NC-17 rating, and negative test audience reactions compelling the producers to insist on changing the identity of the killer and the entire ending well into post-production, Sliver is a film that was restructured within an inch of its life, such that its a small miracle that it was even able to limp its way into theaters as a coherent narrative at all. Many point to Basic Instinct (1992) as being at or near the pinnacle of the erotic thriller boom of the era, and appropriately enough, Sharon Stone and Joe Esztheras' very next project together, Sliver (1993), would go on to represent the cresting of the wave for the genre. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This November is “No Nut November” at Catching Up On Cinema! All month long, we'll be reviewing erotic thrillers from the 80's and 90's! This week on Catching Up On Cinema, Trevor does a solo review of Paul Verhoeven's, Basic Instinct (1992)! Working from a script penned by genre stalwart Joe Esztherhas, Verhoeven's Basic Instinct (1992) represents an acceleration in the ongoing evolution of the then booming erotic thriller subgenre. Starring Michael Douglas and an up-and-coming Sharon Stone, Basic Instinct is a raunchy neo-noir whodunit. Profane, explicit, and positively dripping with body fluids at every turn, Basic Instinct is thankfully more than just an expensive fuck film from the 90's. Brilliantly shot and scored by Jan De Bont and Jerry Goldsmith respectively, and performed with intensity and verve by a who's who of recognizable names and faces, Basic Instinct's only true liability is its (reportedly) $3 million screenplay. Robbed of momentum in its later stages by the necessity of the whodunit aspect of the narrative taking precedence over the fucking and fighting, Basic Instinct unfortunately allows itself to get bogged down with too many repetitive interrogation sequences in the lead up to its resolution. A sexy, fun watch, Basic Instinct is not as consistently entertaining or as layered as many of Verhoeven's best mainstream American efforts, however it is effortlessly memorable, and easily a standout among the subgenre.
