Let us know your thoughtsLock the doors, avoid the basement, and whatever you hear behind the walls… don't go looking. In this episode of The Horror Cut, we descend into the twisted suburban nightmare of The People Under the Stairs, hand-picked by Horror author Sam Tonnell. The wild and darkly satirical horror from Wes Craven blends social commentary, fairy-tale terror, and pure chaos. We dig into the film's strange tonal balancing, its critique of greed and abuse, and the unforgettable performances from Everett McGill and Wendy Robie as the terrifying “Mommy” and “Daddy.” From hidden passageways and cannibalistic secrets to shotgun-wielding landlords, we explore why The People Under the Stairs remains one of Craven's most unique and underrated films.Mandatory Lobotomy: A Horror Anthologyhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Mandatory-Lobotomy-Anthology-Sam-Tonnell/dp/B0D64NM7G4Support the showIG - @thehorrorcutshow | @HewittGPro | @StephenkerrActor_PerformerFB - Facebook.com/profile.php?id=61573701383591

WT actual F are we babbling on about now, we hear you scream? Why, Wes Craven's THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS (1991), of course -- up next on the latest episode of CITIZEN FRAME! For Episode 108, Andrene and Joel gawk at 1991's "The People Under the Stairs". When a young boy (Brandon Quintin Adams) breaks into his slumlords' house, he learns that they are sadistic kidnappers who are keeping young boys in their basement.
A booby-trapped mansion, a feral basement, and “parents” who weaponize piety—Wes Craven's The People Under The Stairs is weirder, funnier, and meaner than you remember. We pull the floorboards up on this 1991 cult favorite to see how its wild set pieces hide a sharper story about slumlords, gentrification, and kids who refuse to stay quiet. We start with a tight plot walkthrough: Fool's break-in to save his family spirals into a hallway hunt through hidden doors, vents, and a prayer room on tape. From there, we compare first-time thrills to rewatch revelations—where the laughs land, where the dread deepens, and how Alice's performance turns punishment scenes into gut-punches. The scalding bath, the belt, the grotesque “mommy/daddy” dynamic, and that infamous gimp suit line up into a portrait of control masquerading as righteousness. We call out the best one-liners, the most gratuitous beats (that blood slip, that barking), and the practical effects that still look great, like Roach's severed tongue. We also get honest about what doesn't hold up. The casual slur hits like a brick, some prop work shows its seams, and a few logic leaps—gunshot holes, super-dog physics—invite eye-rolls. Still, the world-building is a blast: a fortress-like house, secret mechanisms, and a frantic cat-and-mouse energy that keeps the pace snapping. Along the way, we swap comparable titles, share box office context, and dig into why the social commentary feels current. Our watchability scores? Solid sevens across the board—recommended for horror fans, cult-movie hunters, and anyone curious about class horror wrapped in a cracked fairy tale.Hit play for sharp analysis, best quotes, and a cocktail pairing you can actually make. Still reveling in the Sinners Oscar buzz, we were so excited to speak with someone very familiar with Black horror, the one and only Ezra Claytan Daniels. Author of several amazing graphic novels like Upgrade Soul and his latest, Mama Came Callin', as well as writing for shows like Doom Patrol and Severance, he joined us to talk about a Black horror cult hit, The People Under the Stairs. Directed by Wes Craven and staring Brandon Q. Adams, it's a movie filled with some very creepy imagery but also a lot of socio-political satire to chew on. We break down what works and what maybe hasn't aged so well, and also discuss the power of horror in Black stories. Mama Came Callin', a southern gothic horror about family, racial identity, and alligators is a fantastic read. Gorgeous illustrations by Camilla Sucre and of course Ezra's mesmerizing story. Blood's thicker than water… and do these clans prove it! On this frightfully fun episode, we're cracking open the family album from hell, with matriarchs like the chainsaw-slinging brood of THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, backwoods dynasties like AMERICAN GOTHIC, and suburban secrets à la THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS and more! This week, Metal Messiah Jon Snow has a job lined up for the gang so they can all get rich beyond their wildest dreams. The job? Robbing a home occupied by the ghoulish elite. After botching the job almost immediately, the gang is held captive in a holding cell with a group of cannibals who aid them in reviewing the underrated Wes Craven joint, “THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS!” The cannibals may seem scary, but boy are they insightful little buggers!

Yes, Yes, Yes. This is another one of the big hitter episodes that I planned out before even episode 1 of A Year In Horror. I get to watch every single Wes Craven directed movie and then rank them from worst to best. That's right, EVERY ONE! Well, here we have the top 10. The worst 5. A slew of also rans. Some awesome mates. Some special guests. Several pints of beer and over 5 hours of running time split over 4 episodes. Craven June continues with the 1991 horror comedy, People Under the Stairs. We both came into this movie with very different ideas of what it was about. It IS about a movie about cannibalistic stolen children held captive in a basement who feast on unsuspecting visitors. Upon robbing the home of his landlords, Fool notices there are unusual men being kept under the stairs in the basement floor. He also discovers a young girl named, Alice in the home as he attempts to escape from under the noses of his landlords. The People Under the Stairs is a hidden gem from Wes Craven and a movie that sometimes feels over the top in all the right ways. Everett McGill and Wendy Robie stand out as the landlords who are constantly chasing Fool throughout the movie and continue to raise the meter on how evil they can be. This is also not to mention that they are capturing and keeping people in their basement in a sectioned area under the stairs. This is a nice kickoff to Wes Craven month and a movie that is enjoyable to watch each time it's on. Much like Craven's other non-Nightmare and non-Scream franchise-related outings, this one has remained hidden from popular consciousness despite a warm reception in the box office on its first release and an ardent cult following ever since then. Should The People be freed from their cruel incarceration and allowed to roam free in the daylight? Or should it remain an embarrassing secret in Craven's basement? Find out! The People Under the Stairs was previously discussed in the show's first year by Jorge and former cohosts/co-founders Matt and Chris, wayyyyyy back in 2014. This marks the first time WGT has revisited the same film in it's 10 year history. This is also Jacob's first watch of the film, which is insane. "Every generation more insane than the one before it. They got their fingers into real estate, started making a lot of money taking over people's homes. The more money they got, the greedier they got. The greedier they got, the crazier they got. All sorts of rumors about what's going on in that place. Never proved it because the police never took it serious. But believe me, when I was a kid, none of us ever walked past that house." They say you never know what's going on behind closed doors, Fool (Brandon Quintin Adams) and his sister Ruby (Kelly Jo Minter) have a deathly ill mother and an eviction notice to deal with complicated by a lack of funds. Ruby's boyfriend Leroy (Ving Rhames) has a plan though. He's heard of a fortune hiding inside the house of their mysterious landlords. After scoping out the house, accomplice Spenser (Jeremy Roberts) disappears, prompting Leroy and Fool to follow into the booby trapped house guarded by Prince the Rottweiler. Fool meets Alice (AJ Langer), who's never been outside and Roach (Sean Whalen), a tongue-less captive who's escaped into the walls. When Mommy and Daddy (Everett McGill and Wendy Robie) arrive home to clean house, Fool barely escapes with his life and proof of the fortune inside which actives Grandpa (Joe probably) Booker (Bill Cobbs) who says it's enough to save his mother and leave all this behind. Fool made a promise though, he must go back to not only rescue Alice and Roach ,but also Zombie Whitfield Crane and the rest of The People Under the Stairs. Today we revisit the 1991 Wes Craven horror classic: The People Under The Stairs. Filled with startlingly frank class and race politics, the film follows a young poor black boy threatened with eviction who burglarizes his landlords—only to find them imprisoning their failed offspring in the basement. Has any other horror movie featured a tenants' union? Was this the inspiration for Home Alone or Nothing But Trouble? What will the comments have to say about such a politically charged film??
