Question: I live in Michigan's lower peninsula and recently purchased a property in the upper peninsula. I love hunting up there but have had a hard time patterning deer. I've always looked for food and bedding and then found their paths in between. However, where I am in the UP, there are no significant mast crops or ag. We do these listener Q&A episodes because they force us to say the quiet part out loud. This one, with Greg back on the mic, dug into everything I actually care about heading into another season — work, family, the woods, and how none of that stays in its own separate box no matter how hard you try to keep it that way. We talked about how our hunting has changed, not because we care less, but because we've stopped measuring a season by whether a deer hits the ground. That took years to admit. Success used to mean a tag filled. Now it means I showed up, read the sign right, and made a decision I can stand behind whether or not it worked out. Most of this episode is about the ground itself. Terrain, scouting, mapping tools — the stuff that actually separates a good season from a lucky one. We got into how we scout big woods country specifically: reading rub lines to figure out where deer are actually moving, not where we wish they were, and why entry and exit routes matter more than where you hang the stand. Blow a deer out once on your way in, and you've undone a month of careful work. We've both made that mistake enough times to talk about it honestly. We also hashed out the mobile-versus-stationary debate, which never really ends and probably shouldn't. There's no universal right answer — just what fits the ground you're hunting and the hunter you are. Same goes for gear. We ran through what actually rides in our packs every single sit, no filler. Toward the end we got into fitness, motivation, and discipline, because hunting hard big woods country is a physical problem as much as a tactical one, and what separates hunters who improve from hunters who stall out is usually the boring stuff nobody wants to talk about. We closed on the idea that's carried us through some rough seasons: control what you can control. The wind, the weather, the deer — none of that's yours to manage. Success takes an optimization of speed and accuracy that is reminiscent of the 'Combat Accuracy' they teach in the finest shooting schools, military and law enforcement. With that in mind, Hal and Lee are talking training with Ken Campbell, CEO of the world-renowned Gunsite Academy, founded by Col. Jeff Cooper, as well as BWB's own Brad Willey, to share their best advice for capitalizing on that critical shot opportunity. 

Long before trail cameras, mapping apps and advanced hunting electronics, successful deer hunters learned to read the woods. In this episode of DSC's Campfires with Larry Weishuhn, Larry welcomes renowned Master Maine Guide Randy Flannery for an in-depth conversation about the traditional art of tracking and stalking mature whitetail bucks. Randy is the owner and operator of Wilderness Escape Outfitters in northern Maine and a lifelong student of big-woods whitetails. Drawing from decades of experience, he explains that successful tracking involves much more than simply finding hoofprints and following them through the snow. A tracker must learn to interpret the animal's pace, direction, body language, habitat choices and likely destination. The conversation explores how hunters can judge whether a track belongs to a mature buck, recognize when a deer may be catchable, use changing wind and terrain to their advantage and avoid rushing into the very cover where a buck is likely to be waiting. At its heart, this episode is about preserving a form of woodsmanship that can only be developed through patience, observation and time spent in the field. It is part of a constantly unfolding story. A knowledgeable tracker studies how far apart the tracks are, how deeply they penetrate the snow or soil, whether the deer was walking, feeding or moving with purpose, and how the surrounding habitat may influence its next move. Randy explains that the objective is not to keep your eyes locked on the individual prints. The hunter must periodically stop, raise their head and search the woods ahead. The buck—not the track—is the ultimate destination. No single measurement provides a perfect answer, but several clues can help a hunter make an educated judgment. A large track, wide stance, long stride and deliberate movement may suggest a mature animal. The way the deer navigates terrain, chooses cover and reacts to potential danger can provide additional information. Randy's approach emphasizes putting several clues together rather than relying on one isolated sign. One of the most important decisions a tracker makes is whether to continue following a particular animal. Weather, snow conditions, the freshness of the track, the deer's pace and the hunter's ability all help determine whether the pursuit is realistic. A buck that is feeding or moving naturally may eventually offer an opportunity. A deer that has been seriously alarmed may continue putting distance between itself and the hunter. The tracker must continually evaluate the sign and be willing to adjust—or abandon—the pursuit when the evidence calls for it. Finding a track may be the easy part. Closing the final distance requires discipline. As the sign becomes fresher, the hunter must become increasingly careful. Every step, sound and shift in wind direction matters. Mature bucks often stop, circle or select bedding locations that allow them to detect approaching danger. Success comes from resisting the urge to hurry and carefully examining every opening, shadow and piece of cover ahead. Modern hunting technology can be useful, but Randy cautions against allowing equipment to replace foundational outdoor skills. Knowing how to navigate, understand terrain, interpret animal sign, anticipate behavior and remain safe in remote country creates a more capable and self-reliant hunter. Skywalker and Kowen star in Little House on the Prairie - an adaptation of the book series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Season 1 is streaming on Netflix and has been renewed for season 2. Filmed in Manitoba, Canada, the series tells the story of the Ingalls family leaving the Big Woods of Wisconsin for a new life on the prairie Kansas. An American-Canadian film and TV actress, Skywalker Hughes stars as Mary Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie and is currently working on season 2.  Skywalker got her start in 2021 as 'Sheridan Pickett' - a series regular, on the Paramount Plus series, Joe Pickett. She joined us last in 2024 on the heels of her lead role as 'Ashley Schmitt' in the Lionsgate feature film Ordinary Angels opposite Hilary Swank and Alan Ritchson. Skywalker also stars in the lead role alongside Anna Farris and Bentley Storteboom in Andrew Niccol's feature I, Object – now playing in select theaters in New Zealand. They walk through three deer that define Joe's 50 years: an 11-point he shot off the ground long before digital trail cameras, an eight-point that Beau and Joe hunted, but Joe ended up shooting a couple of miles away, and a buck named Stickers that took five years to close the deal on. He spent countless hours in mythology, fairy tales, and classic literature. That imagination was what inspired the Chronicles of Narnia, Mere Christianity, and The Screwtape Letters.He said — reason is the natural organ of truth, but imagination is the organ of meaning. He believed this is where children grasp meaning. Through stories, children encounter courage, sacrifice, honesty, loyalty, and faith before they are even able to explain those things. They shape your kids' imagination, character, and faith.Too often when we start school, we squash that imagination — sit down, do a bunch of workbooks, read this short story and answer these questions. Build a blanket fort and read underneath it. Listen to audiobooks in the car.Make it fun. Draw your favorite characters. Create a craft related to the story. Act out scenes. Create a treasure hunt based on a book.Laura Ingalls Wilder's mother Caroline was a certified school teacher who believed in education and literacy as essential, not optional. Even during the difficult frontier years, no matter where they lived, she prioritized teaching her children to read. And those family experiences became the inspiration for the entire Little House series.What if you read Little House in the Big Woods this summer? Make homemade butter. Learn a pioneer chore. Cook over a fire. Compare pioneer life to modern life. Easy, fun, and meaningful — not just reading and writing.Summer Reading Activities for Middle SchoolMiddle schoolers often become passionate about specific topics. Right now my 11-year-old is into history and has been reading historical fiction. Maybe your kids are into horses, planes, ancient history, missions, nature, or sports.Let your child pick the topic — not you. They will be so much more interested. Then let them read three kinds of books on that topic — a fiction book, a biography, and a nonfiction. For Hunter, that looked like a fictional baseball story, a biography of Derek Jeter, and a book on the science and math of baseball.Ask one question after reading each day — what surprised you? What would you like to learn more about? What would you have done differently in that story? Then maybe do one extra activity. Watch a documentary, go to a museum, cook a related meal, build a model.These things develop critical thinking skills, ownership, and independent learning. I didn't want my kids to always have to do everything a teacher told them. I wanted them to think for themselves, plan for themselves, and make choices for themselves.Summer Reading Activities for High SchoolMany moms stop reading aloud when their kids can read on their own. Big mistake. Many stop in high school. Even bigger mistake. Teens still need discussion. They still need to develop their listening skills. They need exposure to great ideas. And they still need family connection.We still read aloud in the morning, and Steve would read to them several evenings a week. For older kids, try a Christian biography, a mission story, historical fiction, great literature, the classics, or an apologetics book. Don't be afraid of a classic just because the vocabulary feels heavy — the ideas are worth it.Ask questions like — what character stood out today? What would you have done in that person's place? How does this compare to Scripture? What leadership lesson do you see? Choose one biography or one classic and read it together, then discuss it once a week. Over ice cream. At a coffee shop. On an evening walk. Keep it simple.Bringing It All TogetherPair your read alouds with simple summer experiences. If you're reading about Harriet Tubman, go outside at night and look at the North Star — she followed it to guide enslaved people to freedom. If you're reading about a historical time period, bake something from that era.Just last week we were reading Why Don't You Get a Horse, Sam Adams? and we made Johnny Cakes for breakfast — which we found out are actually called journey cakes because you could take them on a long journey and they wouldn't go bad. She was telling her dad all about it when he got home that evening. That is learning that sticks.Summer becomes intentional, relational, and memorable — not just educational.You don't have to recreate school. You don't need elaborate plans or expensive curriculum. One book. One conversation. One family read aloud can inspire a love of learning. And inspiring a love of learning? We discuss: Jerry hunts in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, focusing on bow hunting and habitat management. He started hunting at a young age, influenced by his father's passion for the sport. The property he manages is 310 acres, featuring hardwood ridges and a mix of habitats. Jerry emphasizes the importance of food plots for improving deer body size and health. He has successfully created multiple food plots, enhancing deer activity and fawn numbers. The deer population in his area is robust, with sightings of up to 50 deer at a time. Jerry uses a spring drag for soil preparation, ensuring effective seed planting for food plots. He prefers hunting in the fall, utilizing pop-up blinds to minimize deer detection. His recent buck scored 110 and weighed 156 pounds, showcasing his successful hunting strategy. Jerry plans to add watering holes to improve habitat and attract more wildlife to his property.
