Patrick explains that magnesium is involved in over 3,751 biochemical reactions in the body, playing a crucial role in muscle relaxation, sleep quality, and blood pressure regulation. Brad and Patrick discuss the widespread magnesium deficiency due to modern food supply issues and how it affects everything from muscle cramps to stress management. Patrick explains the relationship between magnesium, calcium, sodium, and potassium—highlighting how imbalances can lead to muscle tightness, leg cramps, and high blood pressure. He also breaks down different types of magnesium, such as magnesium malate (for energy), magnesium glycinate (for relaxation), and magnesium L-threonate (for cognitive function). The conversation also covers practical ways to boost magnesium levels, from food sources like pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate to Jigsaw Health's targeted supplements, including Mag SRT and Mag Soothe. They even touch on the benefits of transdermal magnesium, such as lotions and bath flakes, for muscle recovery. Brad shares his own experience with magnesium for sleep and blood pressure, while Patrick offers tips on optimizing intake for peak performance—especially for those who train, play sports, or enjoy an active social life. In this episode of SurgOnc Today®, Dr. Patrick Sullivan is joined by Dr. Nicole Lopez and Dr. César Reátegui to discuss diverting ostomy. Current practice guidelines suggest that diverting ostomy is the standard of care in surgical management of rectal cancer after neoadjuvant therapy to minimize the risk of clinically significant leak which can then result in permanent colostomy. However, the risk of anastomotic leak after neoadjuvant chemoradiation ranges from 4-12% suggesting that most patients have unnecessary ostomy and additional surgery. With improvement of surgical techniques, utilization of robotic surgery and recent adoption of more TNT approaches, selective use of diverting ostomy will lead to improvement in QOL and decrease in health care costs with minimal impact on incidence of permanent colostomy.

Understanding APIs: thousands of them | hard to discover | Vampire APIs The discussion starts with Patrick Sullivan from Akamai stating that 80% of the attacks they are seeing involve the API. What is an API? Originally, it was a quick way to integrate systems. When servers were down the hall, they had minimal use. The popularity of the cloud has drastically increased the number of APIs on a system. Some federal networks can have thousands of APIs. Why worry? An API is small but powerful. It can be a single line of code. Not only that, APIs are an embedded part of so many systems that it is hard to even discover where the APIs reside. How to protect federal data? Shane Barney from USCIS suggests that API protection should be “baked in” when software developers write code. If you combine that with a continuous runtime model, you will at least know where they are located. During the interview, Patrick Sullivan coins the phrase, “Vampire API.” This can be an API that was written and then replaced. However, malicious actors can access the code and modify it to serve their purposes. Another unforeseen circumstance is the logic within the API. It can be sloppily written to allow the validated code itself to be taken advantage of. Listen to the episode to learn about federal leadership in protecting APIs. These include NIST checklists and understanding the origin of code.

With support from the National & Georgia Trusts for Historic Preservation, Mailchimp, and the Department of Community Affairs, Historic Atlanta and the City of Atlanta kicked off an initiative in early 2022 to create an LGBTQ Context Statement, which will identify, document and ultimately lead to preservation of neighborhoods, public spaces and individual buildings associated with Atlanta's LGTBQ+ community. New South Associates has been engaged to complete this study, and I had the pleasure of interviewing historians Wes Nimmo and Patrick Sullivan to get a sneak peak of the stories they've discovered and documented. In Part II, we talked about RuPaul, the Atlanta Lesbian Feminist Alliance, the first Pride march and parade, Cheshire Bridge Road, Wes and Patrick's favorite buildings, the oldest, continually-occupied LGBTQ space in the city, places that existed for minority LGBTQ Atlantans and so much more.
