Presentatie: Robert Denneman

I also dive into Dennis Hopper's wild villain performance, the genius of de Bont's direction, and why this film remains the blueprint for tight, relentless action.Plus, a few standout moments(that bus jump) and why Speed still slaps harder than most modern blockbusters.Listen and let me know:Is Speed one of the greatest action movies of all time?

Jan de Bont's adaptation of Shirley Jackson's novel bears little resemblance to the source material, much less the 1963 Robert Wise film, but with all the talent that worked on the movie it should have still been a success. Stephen King and Steven Spielberg both pitched in, but for whatever reason they couldn't save the movie from critical disappointment. Stars Catherine Zeta Jones, Owen Wilson, Liam Neeson, and Lili Taylor are all there, too, but can they elevate the movie above cheap thrills? Enjoy this former Patreon-exclusive episode!

The show returns to begin 2025 with a look at a pair of films that, on their surface, couldn't possibly be more different from one another--but in fact they have more in common than you'd think. Both of them owe some debt to Howard Hawks, whether in visual style or dialogue patterns, or something else. And we start with 1994's Speed, directed by Jan de Bont in his American directorial debut. Quick wit combined with action sequences make this a tight thriller with a light rom-com overlay. In Part 2, we'll jump to 2015...and beyond!

In this half of the episode, we look at Bergman Island (2021), written and directed by Mia Hansen-Løve. It stars Tim Roth and Vicky Krieps as a couple who have come to Faro Island as fans of Ingmar Bergman and want to take the tourist view while they complete their own work in a house they've rented. Like some Bergman films, as the characters move deeper into the story, the line between the audience and the actors begins to dissolve, and we're reminded that we're watching a movie starring these actors-as-characters. It's hard to describe in writing but Bergman fans will understand instantly when they see the film. COMING ATTRACTIONS: Next time around, the directorial inspiration is Howard Hawks, with a couple of fairly recent films: Speed (1994) directed by Jan de Bont, and The Martian (2015), directed by Ridley Scott. Making tornados is hard. Let's talk about how difficult it was to make Twister, from rewriting scenes as they filmed to director Jan de Bont possibly abusing his crew.Get the longer Director's Cut version of this episode on Patreon (with 17 extra minutes)!
Jan de Bont's remake of the 1963 Robert Wise classic promised to take The Haunting of Hill House into the new millennium, boasting state of the art special effects and an A-list cast. Unfortunately it also boasted a clunky script, ridiculous production design and CGI overload that robbed Shirley Jackson's seminal ghost story of all of its terror and dread. Join Sebastian and Jennifer as they summon the spirit of Hugh Crain and question their sanity for watching this misguided misfire more than any sane couple should.

Answer that insomnia study ad and beware of griffins because we are checking back into Hill House for our second Jan de Bont film in as many weeks: 1999's "don't call it a remake," The Haunting. Joining us for an episode that immediately goes off the rails and into angry rant territory are five-time returning champions, Patrick Hamilton and Gena Radcliffe of Kill By Kill podcast. We have *lots* of questions: where's the bisexuality? Why is the body count so low? How much should Steven Spielberg be blamed? If Crain is part of the house, then why isn't he everywhere? Oh, and who the hell called Eleanor in the first place?! Poor Lili Taylor...and poor us! Questions? Comments? Snark? From the computer-generated twisters (which still hold up!) to extensive practical effects, it's a true marvel of a film. Plus: Pepsi product placement, a chode of an F-5 tornado, and plenty of love for Jami Gertz's Dr. Melissa Reeves. Questions? Comments? Snark?
