From the depths of Kaijune comes the King of the Monsters.... GODZILLA!But not the Godzilla many fans were expecting when a US remake was announced in the '90s, and not the first attempt to make a US version of the legendary kaiju.Steve Miner had tried to get a 3D version off the ground in 1983, and then there was the infamous Jan de Bont version in 1994. Both stories are fascinating enough, but always lurking in the background of the 1994 version were Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin. They'd been offered Godzilla in the early '90s but turned it down repeatedly. After the 1994 project imploded due to budgetary concerns, they were offered it again. It would be the combined movies of Armageddon and Deep Impact that changed Emmerich's path, and sent him to accept a US remake of Godzilla, alongside Dean Devlin, with full creative control for the pair. And as we know, full creative control always goes to plan...Episode originally released 8th June 2023Mentioned in this episode:From the ArchiveThere's no new episode this week, so I thought you might be interested in revisiting this slightly older, but no less brilliant episode. Phil and Emily continue the Angelina Jolie action films miniseries with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider — The Cradle of Life (2003), joined by Carson Betts and Caroline Thompson, co-hosts of the How Have You Not Seen It podcast. All four participants are watching this film for the first time. This is relevant information. The Cradle of Life follows Lara Croft racing to find Pandora's Box before a rogue scientist with strong Peter Thiel energy can use it as a biological weapon, with complications provided by her ex-lover Terry Sheridan, played by Gerard Butler. It cost $95 million, grossed $160 million worldwide, and opened July 25th, 2003 against Spy Kids 3D, Pirates of the Caribbean, Bad Boys 2, and Seabiscuit. It received three stars from Roger Ebert, which nearly convinced Emily to see it in theaters that summer. She saw The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen instead. Phil does not believe she made the better choice. The film was also banned in China for giving the impression of a country in chaos overrun by secret societies. Hollywood had not yet figured that out.The consensus is that this movie is more competent than the first Tomb Raider along nearly every axis, which somehow makes it less enjoyable. Phil calls it dumb and not fun, as opposed to the first film, which was dumb and fun. Emily notes the big action set piece in the middle is a shootout in a lab, which she finds strange given the title. The group also covers Jan de Bont's filmography and what it means that this was his final film, the Sasquatch creatures that the script introduces and then declines to explain, and the actual Cradle of Life, which turns out to be visually underwhelming in a way that Carson compares to a YouTube video that will not load. The true climax, Carson argues, was always going to be in Lara's heart. This is the third installment of the miniseries on Angelina Jolie's 2000s action films, following Gone in 60 Seconds and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.Follow the show and guests:Podcast Like It's... — https://www.instagram.com/podcastlikeitsPhil Iscove — https://www.instagram.com/pmiscoveEmily St. James — https://www.instagram.com/emilystjamsCarson Betts — https://www.instagram.com/carsonlbettsCaroline Thompson — https://www.instagram.com/sportclimbbarbieHow Have You Not Seen It — https://www.instagram.com/hhynspod

Nathan and I revisit the 1994 action classic Speed, the film that turned a city bus into one of cinema's great pressure cookers. We unpack what makes Jan de Bont's debut still feel so propulsive, revisit the electric chemistry between Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, and consider why this impeccably engineered blockbuster remains one of the defining action films of the decade. Join us as we put Speed back under the microscope — no brakes, no detours.

Send us Fan MailWhat do you get when Stephen Spielberg wants to produce a blockbuster-style horror movie with Jan de Bont directing? You get 1999's The Haunting!Based on the famous Shirley Jackson novel, The Haunting of Hill House, this incredibly 90's film follows a troubled woman invited to a sleep study at a spooky old haunted house in western Massachusetts. The reality, however, is that the doctor conducting the study is really writing a book on fear, and trying to get his guests to give in to the creepiness of the location. When the ghosts turn out to be real, no one is safe and no one can escape!Join us as we discuss how this was almost a Stephen King written project (and what he did instead), the intricacies of fireplace engineering, and how the marketing department completely disrespected the star of the film, Lili Taylor. So grab a nice warm blanket, start counting some sheep, and as always: don't get too scared!

A seller in an unexpected niche and a Chinese entrepreneur who once farmed in Africa reveal how Chinese Amazon sellers think, launch products, build brands, and compete today. ► Watch The Podcasts On Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@Helium10SeriousSellersPodcast?sub_confirmation=1 ► Instagram: instagram.com/serioussellerspodcast ► Free Amazon Seller Chrome Extension: https://h10.me/extension ► Sign Up For Helium 10: https://h10.me/signup (Use SSP10 To Save 10% For Life) ► Learn How To Sell on Amazon: https://h10.me/ft In this episode, Bradley Sutton sits down with two China-based Amazon sellers whose stories are anything but ordinary. Freeman Cui is a Helium 10 employee and seven-figure seller who first saw Amazon's potential while working around the bondage products niche, while Yohan's path to e-commerce began after farming in Namibia. Their backgrounds are unusual, but the lessons they share are highly relevant for any seller trying to understand the global Amazon landscape. Freeman gives listeners an inside look at how many Chinese sellers really operate today. He openly discusses the reputation Chinese sellers have for black hat tactics, but explains that the environment is changing fast. Account crackdowns, tax pressure, and a more mature Amazon marketplace are forcing more sellers to think long-term. He also breaks down how he built a seven-figure business while working a full-time job, leaning on diversification, smart keyword targeting, and careful ad spend instead of trying to chase only the biggest keywords. Yohan brings a completely different perspective. After years in Africa working first as a translator and then as a farmer, he returned to China in 2020 and got pulled into e-commerce by the freedom it offered. He shares how he helped grow the Bont brand, why roller skate wheels became a winning product, and how he approaches launches today through a mix of Amazon PPC, website traffic, and social media promotion. Like Freeman, he stresses that long-term brand building matters far more than shortcuts. What makes this episode stand out is how both guests flip the usual narrative. Instead of only talking about why Western sellers fear Chinese competition, they explain what Chinese sellers admire about US and European brands: better storytelling, stronger marketing, and deeper customer understanding. The message is clear: the future belongs to sellers who build real brands, know their audience, and play the long game. This episode is a reminder that strategy, not stereotypes, is what wins on Amazon.

AI dream interpretation platforms are getting ever more popular. We talk today with Harry de Bont, the developer of AUT-Dream, about how best to approach these tools and why his platform is an improvement over Chat GPT. We talk about what he calls the Anthropic Universe Theory (AUT) and argues that the primary purpose of dreams is to comment on what surprises us and then to help us shift our world model to something closer to reality. We also talk about how AI relates to an emerging collective awareness, and he shares some of his hopes for future ways AI might be used to catalyze community. We take two questions from Max. He asks about how AI works which leads into a discussion of pattern recognition and the inevitable biases of AI based on the cultural profile of the data entered into it. Harry ends by encouraging us to try AI dream interpretation but cautions us to always stick up for our intuition when working with our dreams. BIO: Harry de Bont is an Electrical engineer and dream researcher who bridges psychology, physics, and consciousness studies. He developed the Anthropic Universe Theory describing dreaming as the mind's nightly realignment between body, world, and society. His work explores how emotion and intuition arise from the same patterns of balance that shape both the landscape of our dreams and the physical world. The long-heralded first County Episode of Three Ravens Series 7 is finally here and is a bumper-length installment all about the historic county of Cardiganshire on the west coast of Wales!Unable to resist discussing a local saint, Eleanor begins by introducing us to Carantoc, a dragon-slaying local hero who lost a special altar, apparently. Though luckily King Arthur was about to find it for him. Despite maybe having stolen it in the first place...After that, we whip through Cardiganshire's history, including its mythical ancient king Ceredig - from whom the county gets its Welsh name of 'Ceredigion' - to its conquering by gold-hungry Romans, resistance to the Normans, and the devastation wrought upon it by Cromwell's New Model Army.Sparsely populated and extremely rural, Cardiganshire is rich with mythology, such as the drowned lands of Cantre'r Gwaelod, an astonishing number of ghost animals (including an overly-affectionate spectral pig), giants with toothache, child-stealing fairies, and the 'Beast of Bont.' Yet, there's one tale that stands head and shoulders above the others. As discussed with this week's Local Legends guest, storyteller Milly Jackdaw, this story is that of the birth of Taliesin, the legendary Dark Age Brythonic poet who has since come to define key aspects of Welsh national character.Consequently, despite this week's 'Treasure of Wales' being the Holy Grail, the chewed-up remnants of which are currently located at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, and a plethora of other legends from Devilish goings-on to portentous Corpse Candles that augur doom, what choice did Eleanor have but to tell her take on that very story? Her version, entitled "The Cauldron of Awen," is a wild and poetic ride that bridges land and sea, vast spans of time, and transformations from human to animal and back again. After she's told it, we then discuss the legend's symbolism, share some news of an exciting archaeological discovery from just over the border in England, and dig into the Three Ravens mailbag, which is bursting at the seams from a long summer of correspondence! We really hope you enjoy the episode and are already exciting to speak to you again on Thursday in our Forgotten Melodies bonus episode all about Harvest Songs, all before the full interview with Milly comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is a Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on a historic county, exploring the heritage, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcastProud members of the Dark Cast Network.CLICK HERE TO COMPLETE THE THREE RAVENS ACAST SURVEY - PLEASE DO! In the second hour, Mac & Bont talk about the way Dave Canals handled the starters in the preseason, to see how much that played a role in the loss to the Jaguars, they turn their attention to college football, and debate whether or not Clemson is overrated after the first two weeks, and Charlotte FC midfielder Brandt Bronico joins the show See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
