Message Dan and MikeWe finally sit down to unpack Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth installment in Tom Holland's run as Peter Parker and the first Spidey film from director Destin Daniel Cretton. Picking up four years after No Way Home's spell erased Peter from the world's memory, this is a noticeably darker, more isolated take on the character — Aunt May is gone, his friendships with MJ and Ned are gone, and the arachnid side of his DNA is starting to take over. We dig into how that trauma-driven tone works, and where it doesn't.One of us walks away calling this the weakest of the Tom Holland Spider-Man films, and we're honest about why: a story that feels overcrowded with characters, some shaky CGI work on the Scorpion, and a villain problem that never quite resolves who we're actually supposed to be rooting against. Feeling bad about screwing up his friends' future, Peter asks Dr. Strange to cast a spell that will make the world forget he's Spider-Man. But Peter keeps interrupting the spell to add people he doesn't want to forget, causing it to go nuts and pull visitors from across the multiverse into their reality. Peter goes to talk to the MIT admissions person but ends up being greeted by Doctor Octopus who seems to know a lot about him despite Peter never meeting him before. Peter learns that the spell has summoned people who know Spider-Man's secret identity from across the multiverse. Strange tasks Peter, MJ, and Ned with capturing the interdimensional visitors, leading them to capture Electro, Sandman, the Lizard, and Norman Osborn. Peter soon realizes that each villain was pulled from their universe moments before their death and believes they deserve a chance at redemption instead of being sent back to die. Defying Strange, Peter steals the spell that would send everyone back to their own dimension and begins developing cures for the villains using Stark technology. Peter successfully restores Doctor Octopus, but Norman's Green Goblin persona takes over once again, convincing the other villains to turn on Peter. This leads to a massive battle that fatally injures Aunt May. Before she dies, she reminds Peter that "with great power, there must also come great responsibility," leaving him devastated and questioning whether he made the right choice. Ned unexpectedly discovers he can use Strange's sling ring to open portals. While searching for Peter, he and MJ instead find two alternate Spider-Men from different universes. Maybe you've seen them before in other movies?! I dunno. The three Peters unite and create cures for each enemy and lure them to the Statue of Liberty for one final showdown. It works! But rifts open across the multiverse. Realizing there is only one solution, Peter asks Strange to cast a new spell that erases Peter Parker from everyone's memory. The spell saves the multiverse, sending everyone back to their own universes. Peter visits MJ and Ned, intending to remind them who he is, but decides not to disrupt the new lives they've built. After paying his respects at Aunt May's grave and sharing a quiet moment with Happy Hogan, Peter embraces a fresh start. Now completely anonymous, he creates a new homemade Spider-Man suit and swings back into the city, beginning the next chapter of his life as a true friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Join your hosts James and Joe as they saunter down to Joe's Comic Corner and take another trip back to the swinging sixties and discover just how difficult it can get for everyone's favorite Web-Slinger. The guys take a deep dive into "The Master Planner Saga" (issues # 's 31, 32 & 33), and with the events that culminate in issue #33, a diving suit might be a good piece of equipment to have on hand for our hapless hero.   These are the seminal issues that introduce Peter Parker's firstdays in college at ESU, Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborne. Also we met the mysterious Master Planner who is purloining any and all things of atomic nature. Aunt May is in the hospital--again. Peter and Betty are about to split up. And Spider-man goes through a gauntlet of goons that leaves him badly battered and bruised! It's three issues of massive mayhem as Spidey races the clock to save his dying aunt from a disease he inflicted upon her. Yeah, the old Parker luck knows no boundaries.    As James so aptly points out at the start of this podcast--"There's a ton of soap opera in these books!" Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, at this point in the series, knew what their fans wanted, and they were not shy in delivering the goods.  All the madness comes to one of the most classic conclusions early in issue #33 when Spider-Man performs one of his most iconic feats that still resonates with Spidey fans to this day! But even at that point, the story is not yet concluded as even more goons stand in Peter's way. And what do you think happens? POW! BAM! WHACK! Spideytriumphs! But with victory also comes defeat. This is classic Amazing Spider-Man. It's exciting, colorful, emotional and more fun than a barrel of arachnids! YECH!!!   Oh, who is The Master Planner? I ain't telling. He's a really scary dude!

Maddy and Ryan invite Todd to the wild ride that is Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, specifically the episode "Sunfire" in which, you guessed it, the mutant Sunfire shows up alongside his evil uncle. For some reason, his evil uncle from the comic books isn't in this episode but instead a new character named Uncle Genju is here, with a rather more kid-friendly storyline than Sunfire's uncle had in the comics. Firestar and Sunfire have the exact same power set, and that plays a role in Uncle Genju's evil plot to create a fire monster that will destroy Manhattan and facilitate his world takeover. Once Firestar figures out what's really going on, she gets Spider-Man and Iceman to help her defeat the monster and clear the way for her to hook up with Sunfire. Up until that final battle, Bobby and Peter have mostly spent the episode dicking around and helping out Aunt May with her various helicopter-related foibles. We talk about the helicopter a lot.
