There is so much more good in the world than there is bad. Let’s find the bright side. Melanie Shankle thought she was too far gone. She wasn’t shown the grace and mercy aspect of being a Christian, so by the time she got to college she felt like there was no hope and no going back. Then God met her in a bar in a bathroom, and he pursued her patiently and faithfully and showed her that no daughter of his has ever too far gone…and how to look on the bright side. Melanie is a speaker, the author of four New York Times bestselling books, and the creator of The Big Mama Blog. She lives in San Antonio with her husband, Perry, and daughter, Caroline. In 2006, she felt God’s call on her to be a full-time writer after pouring over parenting blogs and starting her own while on maternity leave. Her newest book, On the Bright Side: Stories About Friendship, Love, and Being True To Yourself, is described as “the ultimate guide to help you discover the power of relationships, the unchanging truths of life, and importance of giving up comparisons.” Melanie is an open book and tells us these four things about herself: “I don’t like Chinese food. So there’s that. In particular, I don’t like water chestnuts. I think they’re a really weird texture.” “I sleep with like seven pillows at night. I’m a very high-maintenance sleeper.” “I was a Judy Blume nut.” “As a fourth-grader, I would get up, and eat my cereal and read Erma Bombeck. I thought she was so funny.” Melanie and I had a blast sitting in my living room, laughing and talking about all sorts of things: how the world seems to have forgotten about love and mercy and grace and that we all need to be reminded that there is light; how God meets us right where we are; the precious role of a mother and how to stay sane while raising kids; our mutual obsession with Cheer on Netflix … I hope she encourages you and helps you look for the bright side! What if our eyes shifted from what we need to what we already hold in our hands? Meredith McDaniel is all about experiencing the hope and peace of God here and now by looking for the manna in her life and being a “manna maker” for others. Meredith is a licensed professional counselor in Davidson, NC, and owner of her private practice Milk + Honey. She just wrote her first book, In Want + Plenty: Waking Up to God’s Provision in a Land of Longing. Inside the pages, she takes us alongside God’s people as they escape from Egypt and wake up each morning to manna, God’s provision for them in desert places. Meredith tells us these four things about herself: “I love music. It is a daily part of my life.” “I really love Havarti dill cheese.” “Right now I have a thing for blue leather.” “Books have always been something I’m really drawn to…because of the stories that are inside.” Meredith and I talk about the longing that everyone feels and how it can unravel us, but that God is always pouring out abundance on our lives … we just have to look for it. If we can trace God’s hand throughout our stories, we can see the “manna” that reminds us of His presence and provision in our lives. I loved my time with Meredith. She is a calming presence and so inspiring. I hope she encourages you and helps you see the manna in your life! Consider the things that you want to accomplish in your life... is it possible for you to achieve those things alone? Achieving all of our goals requires the support of our significant others, our business partners, our bosses, and our friends. But how many of us actually have a process for setting goals with these people who have a stake in our success? Sadly, very few of us do. But this is something we can change! Over a decade ago, The ONE Thing co-author Jay Papasan and his wife Wendy Papasan set aside a night for ONE purpose: casting a vision for what they wanted their lives to look like together so that they would be on the same page – and the idea of a couples goal-setting retreat was born! In this episode, we’re sharing a live webinar featuring Jay and Wendy, in which they talk about what their retreats look like and what you need to know to prepare for your own goal-setting retreat. As you go through this episode, if you find yourself thinking, “I want to do this,” you have three options: Download the FREE Kick Ass Guide® to Your Couples Goal Setting Retreat: https://www.the1thing.com/resources/kick-ass-guide-to-your-couples-goal-setting-retreat/ Join us in Austin for The ONE Thing Couples Goal Setting Retreat: www.the1thing.com/event Can't make it to Austin? Get access to The ONE Thing Goal Setting Master Course: www.the1thing.com/gsrcourse In this episode, you will learn... [12:20] How you can prepare for your goal-setting retreat (even if you’re on a budget) [17:00] What you can do if your significant other, friend, or teammate is not a goal setter [30:50] What it looks like when your goals are not aligned & how you can collaborate in this situation [36:00] How you can keep your goals in front of you throughout the year (even when life gets in the way) [46:00] The basic framework for your goals & the boundaries you should set The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Gary Keller says you’re never more than five years away from where you want to be – if you’re willing to do the right things and you have support from the people around you. So ask yourself, who are those people, that handful of people, who matter most when it comes to achieving what you want to achieve? Do those people know what you’re really striving for over the next 12 months, or the next five years? And what would be possible if, every single day, you had them in your corner supporting you while you take the actions necessary for success? Don’t let this be just another piece of content that goes in one year and out the other – make a commitment to yourself to be the kind of person who takes action! Back when Gary Keller and Jay Papasan started writing The ONE Thing, they asked, “What do we stand for?” They decided that, whatever they created, the bar for quality would be exceptionally high and whoever invested in it would receive incredible value. We still have that standard in our business, and we are always looking for other companies doing the same thing. In our search, we came across Beckett Simonon, a direct-to-consumer brand changing the way premium men’s shoes, bags, and belts are offered. If you want hand-crafted, quality shoes and accessories made with integrity, use the code TOT for 20% off the already great prices at beckettshoes.com. -- Are you ever confused about which stocks to invest in, when to buy, and when to sell? What were the things you really wanted out of life five years ago... and do you have them today? For many of us, the answer is no. But why? Most of us don’t know the proper way to set our goals or create a plan that we CAN accomplish, and we don’t have the tools necessary to build a real relationship with our goals so that we can make consistent progress – and that’s why we created The ONE Thing Couples Goal Setting Retreat. John Schumacher and Carol Stack are perennial goal setters, but they never did it together. Then, after going on their first couples goal setting retreat, they saw a transformation in their results. If you want those results in your relationship – whether that be with your significant other, business partner, team, boss, or friends – then you have three options: Download the Kick-Ass Guide® to Your Couples Goal Setting Retreat: https://www.the1thing.com/resources/kick-ass-guide-to-your-couples-goal-setting-retreat/ Join us in Austin for The ONE Thing Couples Goal Setting Retreat: www.the1thing.com/event Can't make it to Austin? What does that look like for you, and what are the things that you started doing differently? We know that many of you listen to the show because you’re high achievers, and you’ve probably set goals at some point in time... which means you probably also know what it’s like to struggle with your goals because the people in your life don’t know how to support you. No one succeeds alone, but most people try to – and it doesn’t have to be that way. Will you make a commitment to yourself and your future to identify the people in your life who have the greatest stake in your success, and then bring them in to set goals as a team?
