"Do You Want to Be Healed?" - John 5:1-18 by Heritage Bible Church

There's great emotion in the air. The organist is playing a sentimental hymn, people are looking upward, waving their arms with tears streaming down their cheeks. A blind man is escorted onto the stage by an attendant. The popular evangelist asks him how long he has been blind, and does he believe Jesus will heal him? He answers: From birth and yes, he believes. The evangelist then hits the poor man on the forehead while loudly commanding, “Be Healed!” The man falls backward in some kind of trance into the arms of an attendant, and when he awakes, he blinks a few times and shouts “Thank you Jesus – I can see.” And the crowd erupts in cries of “Praise the Lord.” Thinking people wonder: Was this real? Or was it a show contrived by well-rehearsed actors? This is an important question as there is reason to believe these supposed healings are, more often than not, deceptions played out on ignorant people. However, the Bible proclaims that God does supernaturally heal and we read of Jesus healing all manner of sickness and infirmities. Were these real, or was Jesus the first to exploit gullible people seeking relief from desperate physical circumstances? I'll answer these questions on this Tomorrow's World program.

Today I decided to do a Witness Wednesday about how God has been working in my life. I think it is just as important to talk about the little ways God is working as it is to talk about the big ways. Today I want to give you an update on how I can see Him blessing my life. First, I'll start with Noah going off to school. Noah applied pretty late compared to when I remember applying, and he didn't apply to many schools. He knew where he wanted to go—overseas—so most of his applications were in the United Kingdom. He chose Edinburgh Napier University in Scotland and found out in early June. That gave us three months to get everything ready. Going to school in another country is a lot of work. There were so many hoops—finding housing, registering, and getting a visa. It was long and tiring, but the Lord was with us. By the time we applied for his visa on August 14th, we were told it could take up to 15 working days. That would have meant arriving on the first day of classes. However, thanks to the Lord and the people at the passport office, we got it back in about a week. That also allowed us to find affordable plane tickets. I was able to go with Noah to get him settled. I was nervous leaving him in another country where he didn't know anyone. But thanks to the Lord, I was mostly able to focus on what an amazing adventure this would be for him. On the second day, we went to a store to pick up his residency permit. While there, we met another student who was also going to Napier. They are both engineering majors and found out they would be living in the same dorm building, just one floor apart. We also met his parents and exchanged information, which was so helpful. Suddenly, I wasn't doing all of this alone. Thank you, Lord. Noah moved in on Saturday, and I left Monday morning. Saying goodbye was hard, but I know the Lord is with him and that this will be an amazing year. Next, I want to share about my new job. I felt like this fall would bring a breakthrough. I had been praying about going back to work and thought about substitute teaching a few days a week. One morning at breakfast, a friend mentioned they were hiring coaches to work with people with autism. It sounded perfect. I love coaching, and this allowed me to continue doing that without having to find my own clients. It also gives me more time with my family. Then, out of the blue, a friend from Encounter Ministries reached out about another opportunity—working with women in a homeless ministry as a spiritual mother. I was so excited. I love walking with people in their faith, and I've always felt called to this kind of ministry. I spoke with the priest in charge, and we both felt it was a great fit. The commitment is about three hours a week, which works well with my other responsibilities. They are also studying Bob Schuchts' “Be Healed” model, which I had already read and loved. So not only do I get to walk with these women spiritually, but I also get to continue learning about healing. God is so good. He provided not only what I needed, but also what I longed for. The last thing I want to share is what happened when I met these women. They invited me for evening prayer, Mass, dinner, and the start of their study. It was beautiful, and they were so kind and welcoming. After dinner, we started talking about healing. One woman mentioned pain in her foot, so I prayed for her. After a minute or two, I asked her to move it, and the pain was gone. She was amazed. Another woman had a sprained wrist. I prayed for her, and at first she felt doubtful. She renounced that doubt and asked Jesus where He was. She felt like He said, “in your wrist.” When she moved it, the pain was completely gone. All of us were in awe. It's amazing how God cares even about smaller pains. When we ask, He answers. It was such a beautiful experience. I could see Christ in these women and how much they love the Lord. I don't know what is ahead, but I know God has something amazing planned. I hope when you hear this, you can see how God is working—not just in big miracles, but in the little things. Things like getting a visa back in time so Noah could arrive before classes started. I am so grateful for all the ways God is working in my life. He is such a good, good Father. "Do You Want to Be Healed?" - Clay Stauffer - Jan. 25, 2026 by Sermon

Do You Want to Be Healed? Letting God Rewrite the Story Ephesians 8:5-19 Today, Fr. Anthony reflects on how the deepest obstacles to healing are often the stories we tell ourselves to justify, protect, and control our lives. Drawing on the Prophet Isaiah, the Gospel parables of the banquet, and the power of silence before God, he explores how true healing begins when we let go of our fallen narratives and allow Christ to reconstruct our story through humility, prayer, and repentance. The path of peace is not found in domination or self-justification, but in stillness at the feet of the Lord where grace remakes the soul. As St. Seraphim teaches, when we acquire peace, myriads around us are healed as well. One of the great problems we encounter in life is this: we desire healing, but we do not always know how to arrive at it. One helpful way to understand this struggle is through the language of story. Very often, the problem is that we do not have our story right. Scripture tells us to redeem the time, because the days are evil. One of the ways that evil operates is by corrupting our story—our personal story, the way we understand ourselves, the way we frame our relationships, and even the way we understand the great arc of history, what Christians call the economy of salvation. When we live in evil times, that evil does not remain outside us. It enters in, and our story becomes crooked. If all we do as Christians is add religious language to that crooked story—new words, even new scriptures—we have not truly been healed. We have only changed the decoration. The path itself remains bent. One day that story will be brought into the light. This is what the Apostle means when he says, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine upon you." As St. Jerome once observed, St. Paul seems to be paraphrasing Isaiah here—especially that great prophecy where the crooked ways are made straight. This theme runs deeply through Advent and the Nativity Fast. One small personal ritual during this season is listening to Handel's Messiah. Through that music, the words of Isaiah become alive: the great darkness that covers the earth, and the light that rises to overcome it. But darkness is not overcome by changing words alone. If all we do is rename our brokenness with religious language, the world's darkness will only pollute us more deeply. So the first discipline of the Christian life is this: we must let go of our story. Our fallen story becomes a way to protect the ego, to justify ourselves, to excuse the very things Saint Paul warns us against. Salvation begins with humility, with letting go of our justifications, with abandoning the need to construct a story that protects us from the world or grants us domination over it. We are called to let go and stand before the Lord in silence. Not to explain ourselves, not to defend ourselves—but simply to be our story before Him in quiet awe. If we do that work faithfully—and for many of us this must be done daily—then the reconstruction of the story can begin anew. This is where the disciplines of the Church come in: the prayer rule, the psalms, the prayers given to us by the Holy Spirit through the Church. These do not shame us; they heal us. They allow us to see our shortcomings not as excuses to hide, but as wounds that need restoration. This is how our crookedness is straightened so that we can be healed. The Lord also gives us Scripture to interpret our story. In Isaiah 60 we hear of darkness and of a light that rises. Israel is called a light to the nations—but whenever Christians hear that language, our minds are drawn immediately to the Prologue of the Gospel of St. John. And there, light is not mere illumination. It is transformation. It is grace. It is the energy of God entering the world. And when Scripture moves back and forth between Christ and Israel, it is not a mistake—it reveals our participation in this great movement of salvation. Just as we are healed by grace, so the world is transfigured by that same grace flowing from the Body of Christ into all creation. The Lord also teaches us through parables. Many parables may not resonate with many of us because of their agricultural contexts, but we can understand a banquet. We understand meals. We understand invitation. And in this parable, we are the ones who were called—and we came. We may not have been the first invited. We came blind, wounded, ashamed, hiding behind excuses. But the invitation came, and we showed up. Yet getting through the door is not the end of the story. The Lord teaches us what it means to live inside the banquet. When you enter the house, do tell the master how he should run it? Do you take the highest seat as if it belongs to you? No—He says take the lowest place, and let the master raise you up if he wills. This is the posture of true humility. If we were the authors of our story, it would end in darkness. But instead, we are invited into a feast that never ends. And none of our fallen tools—control, manipulation, ego-protection—belong in the Father's house. This is why the psalmist says he would rather be a servant in the house of the Lord than sit among kings. That is our true inheritance. There is no such thing as a low seat at that table. Every place at that feast is glory beyond imagination. The only way it becomes distorted is if we try to overlay God's story with our fallen one. So yes—do we want to be healed? Of course, we do. That is why we are here. Do we want to grow into our inheritance? That is why we came. But it is not enough merely to arrive. We must live your part in the story. There is a false humility that sometimes creeps into us—especially if we have been wounded or manipulated. We become afraid to acknowledge anything good about ourselves or even our relationship with God, as if gratitude were pride. But that is not humility. We need to be ashamed of what truly needs repentance and bring it into the light. But we should never be ashamed of our relationship with the Lord. Do not pretend the banquet is a shack just because we know we do not deserve it. Hold both truths together: the infinite distance between God's glory and our brokenness, and the infinite mercy by which He draws us into His glory.  Following St. Silouon the Athonite, we should keep our mind in hell – and despair not. The lowest seat at that table is greater than any throne the world can offer. It is the seat prepared for us in the council of God. There is no low place there—only mistaken stories that make us think otherwise. So during this season, let's spend time with the Lord in silence. Let's let go of the instinct to create stories that justify, control, and fix everything. These wandering thoughts only deepen confusion. We need to seek peace and pursue it quietly at the feet of God. Then we can come out from that silence and allow His Word to reconstruct us. Our Lord is not manipulative. He does not heal through domination. If there is one relationship in which we can finally release our need for control, it is our relationship with Him. If we skip silence, we will guard ourselves even against God, and the crooked ways will remain crooked—only renamed with religious language. Go in silence before the Lord. Come out and allow His Word to heal you. Then, in that peace, allow your relationships with others to be healed as well. This is how the world is remade: not by power, not by manipulation, but by peace. St. Seraphim of Sarov put it simply: "Acquire the Spirit of peace, and thousands around you will be saved." When peace grows in the heart, the handles of manipulation fall away. The saint no longer needs to prove anything. There is no hunger for worldly approval. The only desires left are to love, to serve, and to receive love. These are not tools of control—they are mechanisms of grace. We still have time to prepare for the Lord's coming. Let this be the beginning. And as part of this renewal of our story, we still have time to come to confession. The Church teaches us to come during every Lenten season, and yes, that can be frightening. Authority in this world has often been abusive or manipulative. But confession is not that. It is not tyranny—it is liberation. The Lord does not want us carrying this weight. He wants us free. This is the Church's gift to us. We must not leave it unused. Let the Lord heal you. Let Him tell you your true story. And then, at last, relax into its glory.

Mommy was a woman of deep prayer, unwavering faith, and extraordinary grace. She devoted countless hours to praying and interceding earnestly for her family, church, Jamaica, and the world. Her commitment to prayer was steadfast, as she believed in the biblical command to "pray without ceasing."She kept a prayer journal, where she noted her prayers and the answers she received. Her entries were often brief yet profound. Mommy prayed for protection, sweet dreams, and visions; for blessings and unity within her extended family, both in Jamaica and abroad; and for her relatives and in-laws, including Cecil.In 2004, she wrote in her journal about praying for all her children to fully turn to God, and she joyfully recorded, "My grandson Sheldon was baptized and is doing well." That same year, she fervently prayed for Sheryl Small's healing from cancer. In 2011, she noted with gratitude, "She's healed and still doing well."Mommy's life was defined by her devout Christian faith. Her prayers reflected her love for God and her unwavering trust in His promises. She was a beacon of faith, an intercessor for many, and a testament to the power of a life lived in communion with God.In Mommy's final moments, I was blessed to be with her. She had waited for me because she knew how much I regretted missing our dad's passing and how deeply I wanted to be there. On Saturday night, I arrived to find her unable to speak, a mask over her nose as she labored to breathe. She could only utter faint sounds, saying "hee."I began to sing, and Ricky joined me. Together, we sang Arise and Be Healed, pouring our hearts into the melody. Then, I prayed for several minutes. As I prayed, she began to cry and joined me in prayer. Speaking in tongues, I felt the Holy Spirit move, and suddenly, she removed the mask and began to speak in tongues herself. She waved her hands and, with remarkable clarity, said, "Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit."Those were her last words. She then went quiet, as though ready to give up the ghost. That night, I returned to her home—our family's childhood home—and slept in her bedroom. Around 4 a.m., she visited me in a dream. She came to say goodbye and to encourage me to be strong and of good health. When I woke, I knew she was gone.Mommy never gave up. Even at the very end, her faith remained unshaken. Her love for God and those she left behind shone brightly in her final moments. Her life was a testament to the power of faith and the enduring presence of God's spirit.B. The Power of Prayer and Self-ReflectionIt is my mother's life of prayer, faith, and self-reflection that has profoundly shaped my understanding of the transformative power of prayer and introspection.When we pray, let us pray without sitting; when we dream, let us dream without sleeping. Believe and have faith, but stay away from naysayers. Prayer sharpens our focus, helping us acknowledge our limitations while embracing God's favor and the limitless possibilities He offers. It connects us with the divine—beyond and within—and aligns us with the cosmos and the cognitive.The Bible reminds us, “Men ought always to pray and never faint.” My mother embodied this verse in her daily life, just as Daniel did when he prayed and overcame the lions' den. What is your den? Prayer has the power to change things.When we pray, let's be ready to act, to change, and to receive. Let's open our hearts and minds to His endless possibilities. “Healing happens organically as love is being expressed,” says Dr. Bob Schuchts of the John Paul II Healing Center    In this mini-retreat in a podcast, Dr. Bob shares how important it is to listen and be attentive to what spiritual practices the Holy Spirit is drawing you to this Lent--so the Divine Physician can bless you with healing.   As we look at our patterns of sin and chronic wounds we have carried with us for a long time, we must remember God sees us in our wholeness. And remember that we cannot fix our own brokenness; however, we can name it and bring it to Jesus for healing.    Dr. Bob shares stories, including when he had a panic attack and realized his own need for healing. As Dr. Bob engaged in the healing process, he learned that beneath his anxiety was abandonment from his parents' divorce. The pain in his heart began to heal through the love of God and he forgave his parents. Summary of Sermon: Do You Want to Be Healed? Introduction Pastor Torry continues the "Family Matters" series, addressing the complexities of family, including divorce, trauma, and abuse. He acknowledges that discussing family is challenging because of the deep emotions attached to it. Some come to this series feeling blessed, while others are reminded of pain. He emphasizes that regardless of one's past, there is hope and healing available through Christ. Context: The Pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-9) The story takes place during a Jewish feast, a time of celebration, yet also a time that can highlight pain for those who feel alone or broken. The setting is the Pool of Bethesda, a place where the sick gathered, hoping to be healed by the stirring of the water. Pastor Torry draws a parallel between these individuals and those today who seek healing in different ways—sometimes in destructive or ultimately ineffective places. A key figure in the story is a man who had been infirm for 38 years. The passage suggests he was not always lame, implying that something happened to him that changed his life. This resonates with many who feel their lives have been altered by trauma, pain, or loss. The enemy often uses past events to fill people with guilt, shame, and regret, but dwelling on "what ifs" only prolongs suffering. Jesus' Question: Do You Want to Be Healed? Jesus sees the man and asks, "Do you want to be healed?" On the surface, the question seems unnecessary—of course, the man wants healing. However, the man responds not with a simple yes, but with reasons why healing has not happened for him. He explains that he has no one to help him into the pool, highlighting feelings of helplessness and self-pity. Pastor Torry points out how many of us respond similarly to Jesus' offer of healing. We fixate on obstacles, waiting for external conditions to change, rather than recognizing the healing Christ offers. Healing is not found in receiving an apology, getting even, or external validation. Making our healing dependent on others only prolongs our suffering. Jesus bypasses the man's excuses and simply tells him, "Rise, take up your bed, and walk." Faith to Walk The man had to exercise faith to stand up. He could have continued listing reasons why he could not, but instead, he obeyed and was healed. This illustrates that healing requires faith to move forward, even when uncertainties remain. Many people remain in their pain because it is familiar, but God calls them to step out in faith toward healing. Three Truths About Healing Our Hurt Does Not Destroy Us (2 Corinthians 4:7-9) Paul endured immense suffering but declared that though he was pressed, he was not crushed; though struck down, he was not destroyed. Pain may feel overwhelming, but with Christ, one can endure and emerge stronger. Our Hurt Does Not Define Us (2 Corinthians 5:17) Paul's past as a persecutor of Christians did not define his future. Believers are made new in Christ. Their identity is not found in their trauma, failures, or weaknesses, but in Jesus. Our Hurt Does Not Determine Our Future (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)The ministry of Christ is one of reconciliation. We are not promised restoration, but the reconciliatory work of Christ in our lives gives us the strength to stand and start again. Conclusion: Healing is both an instant miracle and a process. The man at Bethesda was healed immediately, but his journey with Jesus continued afterward. For those struggling with family trauma, loss, or regret, Pastor Torry assures them that their pain is not the end of their story. By fixing their eyes on Jesus and taking steps of faith, they can experience the abundant life God intends for them.

Be Healed 

In this episode, I'm excited to welcome back Dr. Bob Schuchts, founder of the JPII Healing Center and co-host of the Restoring the Glory podcast. Dr. Bob is a renowned author and spiritual leader, known for his transformative books Be Healed, Be Restored, Be Transformed, and Be Devoted. Today, we dive deep into the power of healing, specifically for men, and how the upcoming Restored Men's Healing Conference is set to impact men's lives.

When life is hard (or even when it is not!), it can be hard for me to find something to pray about when I sit down to pray. It helps me to have some set piece of content that I'm going through that serves as inspiration for my prayer. Right now, I'm going through the Catechism in a Year podcast, but here are some other ideas for you if you are looking for some good spiritual reading/listening: The Bible (The best!
