Healing from past wounds opens the door to the freedom and joy of healthy, life-giving relationships. Along the journey, boundaries will protect your peace, forgiveness will soften your heart, and Christ must remain the foundation of it all. Questions to Discuss: What messages or behaviors from our families growing up do we find ourselves repeating—intentionally or not—in our relationship or with our children? When we face conflict or stress, do our reactions feel like our own—or do they echo how our parents or caregivers responded? Are there parts of our past—such as experiences of neglect, abuse, shame, or loss—that we haven't fully processed and might be impacting how we show up for each other and our children? What do you hope your legacy will be? Quotes from today's episode: "It's okay to not be perfect." “You've gotta have your truthtellers” “There are things we may not see as big, but they become big.” “I always deflected with humor because I didn't want to feel anything too deeply.” “They've achieved all these things that the world says is success, but they're still empty.” “It's so healing to be the thing in someone else's life that you wish you would have had in your own.” “I didn't get to have that mother, but I get to be that mother.” “There is something so beneficial about having someone who's not your friend, validate some of the experiences you've been through.” MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: Use our Self Check Up Guide as an opportunity for honest self reflection. What an amazing journey from dysfunction to dynamic! Join Kate and Sheila as the recap Here Be Dragons (Treading the Deep Waters of Motherhood, Mean Girls, and Generational Trauma) by Melanie Shankle! There are SO many quotes! Here's a sampling:“Sometimes the best teacher is the consequence of bad decisions.”“You can't lead someone to a place that's beyond where you've been able to go yourself.”“Our kids become who we allow them to be. If we choose to ignore bad behavior we're condoning it.”“We can't parent perfectly, but we can parent faithfully.”“Jesus is the one that holds fast despite human failings…Faith is not a riddle to be solved but rather a journey our hearts are on… God isn't afraid of our questions or our doubts.”Melanie shares how her turbulent childhood haunted her as she entered motherhood. She knew she loved her baby in a way that she was never loved. She vowed to break the cycle of dysfunction and lean on God to guide her out of her brokenness into the mother her daughter needed. She realized by praying for her daughter to be resilient and strong that she had to go through tough times. Battles shape us and as her husband cleverly puts it, “You have to carry your own bucket.”Kate is always saying, “Choose your hard” and this book highlights that mantra. Change is hard. When we embrace changing our default it is challenging indeed but with God giving us strength and guidance it is possible. The world is not the boss of possible, God is!Thanks for joining us on this growth journey through one good book talk at a time. We are blessed to partner with you!

Have you ever felt powerless watching your child face mean girl drama or generational challenges? In this episode, Colleen O'Grady sits down with New York Times bestselling author Melanie Shankle to discuss the deep waters of motherhood, particularly the struggles of raising teenage daughters. Melanie shares her journey of uncovering generational patterns, healing from past wounds, and guiding her daughter through the painful reality of mean girl culture. As a mother, she discovered that unresolved personal struggles can impact parenting, making it crucial to confront our own "dragons." Through Caroline's experiences, they discuss the importance of self-advocacy, resilience, and the powerful role of a mother's support in shaping a teen's confidence and emotional health. Melanie Shankle is a three-time New York Times bestselling author of Here Be Dragons, Sparkly Green Earrings, The Antelope in the Living Room, and Nobody's Cuter Than You. She speaks at events nationwide and co-hosts the wildly popular podcast, The Big Boo Cast. Melanie and her husband, Perry, live in San Antonio, Texas, and are the parents of Caroline. Three key takeaways from this conversation: First, healing from personal wounds is essential to breaking unhealthy cycles and equipping children with the emotional strength they need. Second, mean girl dynamics can be intense, but teaching teens to set boundaries and stand up for themselves fosters resilience and self-respect. Lastly, moms play a crucial role in helping teens process their experiences by listening, validating their feelings, and guiding them toward positive relationships. Above all, trust that the challenges teens face today can shape them into stronger, more compassionate individuals in the future. 4o Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Sometimes you read a friend's book and you're jealous they wrote something this good. This is how I felt when I read writer and podcast Melanie Shankle's latest Here Be Dragons: Treading the Deep Waters of Motherhood, Mean Girls, and Generational Trauma. That realization set her on a long journey of untangling her past and healing from the wounds of her upbringing. In this conversation, we cover so many important topics, including: The meaning behind Here Be Dragons Mean girls, motherhood, and generational trauma How to become spiritually and emotionally healthy to break toxic cycles What it looks like to set boundaries or cut off a parent as an adult How to recognize when a closed door in your child's life is actually God's protection Join us for an honest, insightful discussion on healing, parenting, and trusting God through life's toughest moments. Happy Wednesday! Is it just me, or did January last six months? I cannot handle one more school holiday, winter illness, or ¼ inch of snow canceling school. But I digress. I'm thrilled to round out this month with an amazing conversation featuring Melanie Shankle. And yes, Amy Weatherly is still co-hosting with me, and I couldn't be more grateful! To know me is to know that I've been a huge fan of Melanie's books for years. I was so excited to hear she has a new one coming out, and—spoiler alert—it might just be my favorite yet! Today, we're covering topics like parenting teenage daughters, the insights we gain through years of motherhood, and the importance of teaching our kids resilience. Melanie also opens up about her strained relationship with her mother and her decision to end generational trauma. Melanie's book releases on February 18th, and now is the perfect time to pre-order it. I've read it cover to cover, and trust me—there's something for everyone in this book. I can't wait for you to hear this conversation... and I really can't wait for January to finally end.
This week, I'm joined by Melanie Shankle to talk about her book, Here Be Dragons. Our conversation dives deep into important topics like generational trauma, relationships, and the impact of mean girls on young girls. Melanie's focus on healing and boundaries is so powerful, reminding us that the path to raising emotionally healthy kids starts with becoming emotionally healthy ourselves. Here are four key takeaways from this episode:Raising emotionally healthy children starts with doing the work to heal yourself. It's never too late to begin. Boundaries are essential for protecting your emotional health and that of your family. Melanie encourages parents to pause and evaluate areas in their lives that need healing or adjustment for their own and their children's benefit. We discuss the influence of relationships and mean-girl culture on young girls, and how parents can guide them toward healthy connections. Melanie Shankle is a bestselling author, speaker, and host of The Big Boo Cast podcast. Her latest book, Here Be Dragons, explores the complexities of relationships and the importance of emotional health. Melanie's heartfelt writing and practical advice have made her a trusted voice for parents seeking to raise emotionally resilient children. This episode is filled with both challenges and encouragement, offering actionable steps to prioritize emotional health in your family. Y'all, I've had Sophie Hudson on my bucket list of guests since before I started the podcast! She's the co-host, along with Melanie Shankle, of the Big Boo Cast podcast as well as the voice of the Boo Mama blog (she shares in this episode how that name came to be!) and author of several of my favorite books. She's a southern girl from Alabama who loves her family and her football but mostly she loves Jesus. Her books include A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet, Home is Where My People Are and Giddy Up Eunice. And she recently released her newest book, A Fine Sight to See: Leading Because You Were Made for It, where she shares how it empowers women to embrace their God-given roles as leaders and serve with boldness, both inside and outside the church. She was such a delight to talk to and has such a heart for women! I know you're going to enjoy listening to our conversation and love Sophie as much as I do! In today's podcast, Ruth Bean, from our Vestavia community group, authentically shares her struggles, anxieties, and fears as a mom and how she is learning to trust God with her children. In her story, Ruth will encourage you to rest in knowing God has a perfect plan for your child, and if you're having a hard time trusting Him and letting go, rest assured, you aren't alone! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Thinking you have control over your children as they grow up is a facade, and you must hand them over to God. Jesus was rejected in a big way, and often times, our kids will be rejected as well. When you allow little hurts to build up, they can shatter your soul. Moving from the era of blogging to the age of Instagram has shifted our perspective on motherhood and how we share those parenting moments with the wider world. Melanie Shankle shares her unique takes on the evolution of motherhood and how friendship can be a life-saving element in all of the change surrounding us. Quotes “We have this internal thing where we measure ourselves by what other people are doing. How does their marriage look? How are they parenting? How are their kids? It can be so easy to want to compete with them; it's like this inner envy or comparison game.” - Melanie Shankle “The thing that God has always brought me back to in my life is that I've got to walk my own road. I've got to walk the road that God has given me. Someone else's road always looks better because I don't know all the bumps in their road.” - Melanie Shankle “I think you just have to go back to what you know is the truth, which is that God has given you your path, your words, and your presence here on earth and He has something very specific tied to that that only you can do.” - Melanie Shankle “You've got to have real life people in some capacity, the people who are going to show up on your doorstep when things are bad or hard or when you're sick or when you need something. That's living in real community.” - Melanie Shankle “I think real relationship, real friendship, starts when you're vulnerable with people and say, ‘Here are my struggles, here's who I really am,' and they do the same.” - Melanie Shankle Guest's Links Melanie Shankle's website Melanie's Instagram Melanie's Facebook Melanie's Twitter The Big Boo Cast, Melanie's Podcast with Sophie Hudson On the Bright Side: Stories about Friendship, Love, and Being True to Yourself Resources Mentioned in This Episode Nobody's Cuter Than You: A Memoir About the Beauty of Friendship Connect with Sally Lloyd-Jones Jesus Storybook Bible Facebook Jesus Storybook Bible Instagram Sally's website Sally's Facebook Sally's Instagram *Episode produced by Four Eyes Media*

Their real names are Melanie Shankle and Sophie Hudson, but they've been blogging for a long time on the internet as Big Mama and BooMama. In addition to being authors and speakers, they also host the fun podcast The Big Boo Cast where they talk about all the important stuff: faith, family, friends, football, fashion, and food. Plus, of course, their hair. They join me for a mom friends episode where we talk about parenting teens, launching kids to college and letting go of mom guilt. “If you were a bad mom, you wouldn't spend a lot of time worrying about if you were a bad mom. So the fact that you're feeling that guilt is like, you love your child, you're showing up, you're trying to do all the right things. And you just have to trust that God's grace covers the rest of it because they're going to be things you get wrong.” You won't want to miss the fun and funny Melanie and Sophie. I consider them some of my mentor moms and they offer up a lot of candid advice and wisdom for playing the “long game” of parenting.
