Little Leaf Farms recently secured $300 million in capital investment to help the hydroponic lettuce company further expand its operations. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about Little Leaf Farms' use of advanced greenhouse technologies, including data analytics and hands-free automated grow systems, as well as its plans to open a new hydroponic greenhouse on 180 acres in Pennsylvania. She also discusses how hydroponic growers like Little Leaf Farms are helping to reduce the global lettuce shortage, which began in 2020 when California lettuce growers faced hotter-than-average temperatures and crop diseases. The team wonders whether lettuce grown with hydroponics will ever replace traditionally grown produce, but commend the technology for enhancing food security despite weather conditions and supply chain disruptions. Also, in this episode, Sydney discusses the best condiments according to the Whole Foods Market Trends Council. With the condiment, marinade and dressing category expected to hit $2.9 billion by 2024 according to a Mintel report, the Council noted that consumer desire to experiment will support the sales growth. She talks about the five best condiments that made the list, including BBQ sauce, hot chili sauce, ketchup and mustard, fermented condiments and ranch, and provides examples of products on store shelves that represent these trends. The team is surprised by how many different varieties of condiments are on the market, but praise the Whole Foods Market Trends Council for including condiments from all over the world.Read the full articles here:Hydroponic Lettuce Grower Little Leaf Farms Raises $300 MillionThese are the Best Condiments According to Whole Foods Market Trends CouncilFor more food and beverage industry content, visit the Xtalks Vitals homepage.Follow Us on Social Media Twitter: @XtalksFood Instagram: @Xtalks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Xtalks.Webinars/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/xtalks-webconferences YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/XtalksWebinars/featured

RUN We took our training run to Walt Disney World to check out the 2020 Epcot Food and Wine Festival. We had a 3-miler to complete and thought this was a great chance to get a peek at the festival as it is running longer than it ever has before this year. We also wanted to see what the experience was like at Disney now that it has reopened. EAT This year we got to experience classics at the Canada booth! We featured the Canada booth in Episode 86 as we compared it to Ireland’s offerings. The “Le Cellier” Wild Mushroom Beef Filet Mignon with Truffle-Butter Sauce was great and the star is always Canadian Cheddar and Bacon Soup with a Prop and Peller Pretzel Roll. Ireland has not returned, but we got to experience a brand new booth called Citrus Blossom. The Lobster Tail served with Meyer Lemon Emulsion and Grilled Lemon was fantastic and the Crispy Citrus Chicken with Orange Aioli and Baby Greens was awesome. We can’t wait to try more from the festival later on this year! DRINK The 2020 Epcot Food and Wine Festival had some great beer offerings as well. We got two new ones between the Canada and Citrus Blossom booths. At Citrus Blossom, we saw Islamorada Beer Company and we had to try the Coconut Key Lime Ale there. Crisp and refreshing for a hot Florida day, it had subtle notes of coconut and key lime. With an ABV of 5%, it was a great offering to cool off during this very humid Florida summer. At Canada, there was the Blackberry Fruit Beer from Collective Arts out of Hamilton, Ontario. At 4.7% ABV, it was a beer with lower carbonation and a dry finish, and a blackberry color, almost as if it was a wine. It was not a dessert beer, but a refreshing offering that we’d have again in Canada. THAT’S A WRAP! If you love what you hear, now, you can become a patron and support the show! One Man Brand Radio Show host Ray Seggern interviewed Baby Greens founder Sharon Mays on his October 29th broadcast. Sharon and Ray, both “serial entrepreneurs,” talked about the nature of that beast: how not to internalize failure and instead persevere. They also had a robust conversation how to build strong culture as the leader of an organization. Sharon expressed a hope to take the Baby Greens concept even farther through franchising. She and Ray also discussed her first try with Baby Greens, what she learned through that attempt and how the new store improved because of the lessons learned.

This week’s show features Sharon Mays, CEO of Baby Greens and Travis County Commissioner Gerald Dougherty whose TV ad for re-election exploded on every network this week! Revitalization and going viral are the themes for this edition of the One Man Brand Radio Show!
We fixed some leaks in the boat and we are now back with our second full show of One Man Brand Radio, the radio advice show for business owners and entrepreneurs, leaders and dreamers. This show aired originally on radio station NewsTalk KLBJ in Austin, TX. 590am/99.7fm. Today we interviewed a local entrepreneur, Julianna Gilchrist, about an encounter she had with an an unwarranted review left maliciously by someone who had never been a customer. Her experience is a cautionary tale, and her response to it is sage advice that would benefit anyone whose business counts on online reviews. We also had a caller from an air conditioning and plumbing company who asked about radio formats and tying together her various marketing efforts. We played Ray's a few ads from Ray's all-time favorite radio advertising campaign. We started the show by celebrating Labor Day. That included Ray unapologetically stating his preference for barbecue joints who can trace their origins to Taylor, TX. He also welcomed a couple of great Austin businesses to our Anderson Lane neighborhood: the soon-to-reopen Baby Greens, and Black Swan Yoga, whose new location is set to open on the same block.
