Teamwork Makes the Dream Work - if the Beer Tastes Great!  Josh & Angie Grenz, Owners of Verboten Brewing and Barrel Project in Loveland, and Verboten North Brewpub in Fort Collins.  I met Josh and Angie Grenz in the early months of their opening their first Verboten location in a quiet industrial park in Loveland, and Angie actually came to the very first organizational meeting for the first LoCo Think Tank chapter - before I had come up with the name!  She didn't join, and hasn't yet - but I remain hopeful.  We've stayed in touch over the years, and reconnected more properly last year when they opened their second location in what had been Black Bottle Brewery in Fort Collins - which closed the fall before.  Verboten means forbidden in German, and their selection of beers mostly has one thing in common - they use ingredients that would have been forbidden under historic German purity laws - which basically means you can have lager and you will love it!  Sours and Porters and Wine-Barrel aged Stouts and you name it - they've done it - and probably won a prestigious medal for it!  Josh and Angie eventually moved to a great downtown location in Loveland, and the Verboten North is at the corner of Prospect and College in Fort Collins.  This is a journey of starting small, focusing on the product and the people, and growing into a regional brand.  In an industry that has experienced decline in recent years, Verboten continues to grow - and it's due to hard work and smart decisions by Josh and Angie and their dedicated teams.  So please enjoy, as I did - my conversation with Josh and Angie Grenz.  The LoCo Experience Podcast is sponsored by: Purpose Driven Wealth Thrivent: Learn more

Stefan was travelling again and he visited the island of Sao Miguel in the Azores island chain as well as Lisbon, Portugal. Of course, this means he brings back some beers to try. Sao Miguel is the only place in Europe that grows tea and pineapples. The pineapple plantations are all hothouse based which creates smaller and sweeter fruit. They aslo create a pineapple beer called Ceveja de Ananas 1864. It's fruit beer which is a fun entry into the beer world. In Lisbon in a back alley there is a beer bar called Outra Lado. It's a great craft beer bar with lots of options.  Every year they team up with a brewery to releaes their anniversay beer. Barona Outra Lado Third Anniversary Barrel Project is a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout.

They've been pretty good. Today we have Barrel Project 19.11, a barrel-aged barleywine aged on Knockando single malt scotch barrels for 8 months.  After that we have a well reviewed friend of the show Moersleutel.  Double Roast Kieni is a double-roasted imperial stout with coffee from the amazing Danish coffee roasters Coffee Collective.

Barrel ageing and mixed fermentation. Are there any two phrases that evoke curiosity and create excitement for brewers and beer lovers more than these? You’d be hard pressed to find a brewer who is not fascinated with the art of blending beers stored in wood or the mixed cultures of Brettanomyces and lactic acid, which spawn bacterias such as lactobacillus and pediococcus. Sour, mixed fermentation and barrel aged beers do hold a certain level of reverence amongst beer fans on parr with even the finest vintage wines and fine ciders, retailing with higher prices, presented in slender elegant glass bottles, and evoke feelings of opulence. By virtue of these beers spending prolonged periods stored in wood, you just instinctively know that these have been crafted with care by people who are passionate about making them, not to turn huge profits, but as a labour of brewery love. One such brewery, known for their excellent barrel project, is London Beer Factory. Established in 2013 by brothers Ed and Simm Cotton, London Beer Factory found success as part of the South East London beer scene. Since then, they’ve grown to an output of 50HL per day from their 25HL brewhouse, with a team of 6 brewers producing 500,000 litre of beer per annum across a wide range of styles, including hazy IPAs, imperial stouts, lagers and more. Their Bermondsey based Barrel Project serves house barrel aged & craft beers across 24 taps and contains 200 oak barrels, all nestled under a Victorian rail arch, blending the traditional & modern. Each release is a unique expression of time, place, provenance, and attention. As you’ll hear in our discussion on all things barrel aging and mixed-ferm with brewers Brayden and Brett, they even have a mobile coolship - the UK’s first purpose built vehicular coolship - that travels the UK capturing wild yeast and bacteria that naturally occur all around us. Every beer they make is a living record of the areas they visit and captures some of the essence of the friendships made along the way. --- THIS WEEK'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY... Episode 200 - Josh Grenz, Verboten Brewing & Barrel Project via Porchdrinking.com Happy Monday, Thieves. Welcome to episode 200! Hard to believe, isn’t it? We’re continuing with the Colorado shows and today we welcome a local brewer, Josh Grenz of Verboten Brewing to the hotel round table for a talk about barrel aging beers, brut IPA, and more. Grenz began his craft beer journey several decades ago. Raised in Fort Collins, Colo., he was raised around craft brew stars New Belgium and Odell Brewing Co. After years of beer appreciation, he learned to homebrew and the obsession took firm hold. After homebrewing for several years, he and his wife, Angie, decided they were ready to take the leap to business owners and craft beer cultivators. In 2013, they opened Verboten Brewing in Loveland, Colo., with a focus on creating unusual, innovative beers.**Want to support us? We have launched a PATREON Page.
