Stephen Sackur speaks to Aiden Aslin, the British man who joined the Ukrainian army and was captured, tortured and sentenced to death by Putin's forces. He got out in a prisoner swap, traumatised but alive. Why did he risk his life for someone else's cause?
Aiden Aslin, the British prisoner released by Russia, discusses his time behind bars, receiving the death sentence and his plans to return to Ukraine. Also, Africa correspondent Andrew Harding and Beverly Ochieng from BBC Monitoring in Nairobi discuss the Russia-Africa summit and the continent's relationship with the Kremlin. And what does Yevgeny Prigozhin's reappearance in St Petersburg tell us about President Putin's position of strength? Today's episode is presented by Lucy Hockings and Vitaly Shevchenko. The producers were Arsenii Sokolov and Clare Williamson. The technical producer was Gareth Jones. The series producer is Tim Walklate. The senior news editor is Sam Bonham. Pinned down at a Mariupol steelworks, after a month-long siege and running out of supplies, Aiden was part of the mass surrender of over a thousand Ukrainian troops, in April 2022. Then his real ordeal began. Singled out for his British passport, Aiden was interrogated, tortured, stabbed, turned into a propaganda zombie, tried by a kangaroo court and then sentenced to death. A victim of a catalogue of abuses of international law, Aiden struggled to cling on to any hope of survival. Certain that he was going to be executed, he was eventually freed in a prisoner exchange and permitted to return home. In this interview, Aiden reveals the full, harrowing story of his time fighting in Putin's war, of his six months in Russian captivity, and of his hardened resolve to defend the freedoms of the people of Ukraine.

Episode 179 : We're Back! Nick and Sara are back in the basement ramping up for another year of the Weekly Re-Cap. We started by covering our most recent excursion to Liberty Pole Whiskey. Sara explains her need to stay away from hazy/hoppy beers recently and we rage about Personal Day Seltzer. This leads us to our experiences with food and we talk about Fat Butcher in Lawrenceville and Bridge City Brinery's Takeoutery in Etna, which of course led us to talk about Blue Sparrow's bus at Dancing Gnome. We obviously had to talk about Dancing Gnome bottling beer. After we cover the new breweries of the last 2 months (Bonafide, Lolev and Aslin) we gush about the great emo resurgence of 2023. Then we get into beerfest season with Drink The Cookie Table 2 (Listen for the giveaway instructions) first and we hype Barrel and Flow. That's it this week. Thanks for listening! Aiden fought with the Ukrainians and was captured by Russian forces during the siege of Mariupol. After a normal childhood in Nottinghamshire and ambitions to be a policeman, how did he find himself a prisoner of war? And how did he survive it? Outgoing Missouri House Elementary and Secondary Education Committee chairman Chuck Basye (R-Rocheport) says he's prepared to take legal action, if Columbia's school board doesn't certify his name for the April school board ballot. Chairman Basye joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri." Tuesday was the final day to file for Columbia's April school board race, but Basye says CPS authorities wouldn't let him inside the Aslin building to complete paperwork. He contacted Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt's office and Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft's office, and ended up filing at Boone County clerk Brianna Lennon's office. CPS spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark tells 939 the Eagle that December 27 is a district holiday and that Aslin offices were closed. She says filing was available by appointment and that appointments had to be made by December 22. Chairman Basye says that's a violation of state law, and that candidates should be able to file on the final day without an appointment. Ms. Baumstark says filing isn't certification, and that candidates must be certified and the board must authorize a notice of election and sample ballot before candidates are officially placed on a ballot. Baumstark says the board must do this by the end of January as required by law. She says the board plans to do this at their January 9 meeting:

This is the true and frightening Combat Story of Aiden Aslin, a British citizen fighting for the Ukrainian military who was taken as a POW in February 2022 and then beaten and stabbed by his Russian captors for over five months. Listeners will recall our first interview with Aiden from Feb 5th, 2022 (https://youtu.be/IbHSQ1xzpRc), just weeks before the Russian invasion where he predicted what would come after two deployments to the frontlines in Ukraine and significant fighting in Syria. Aiden was fighting on the front lines in the Donbas region of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, when Russia, completely unprovoked, invaded Ukraine. His unit fell back to the steel factory Mariupol where it was surrounded by Russian and Donetsk People's Republic (or DPR, which is Russia's foot soldiers and lackeys in Donetsk). Out of food and ammunition, Aiden's unit would eventually surrender to the Russian military which promptly handed Aiden over to the DPR for regular beatings and violations of the Geneva Convention which surprised nobody. In our interview, Aiden recounts the harrowing experience of being on the frontlines when Russia invaded and how he survived captivity, without any of the advanced training that people like myself received regularly while in service to survive and escape these situations to return with dignity. I'm sure you will be amazed at Aiden's spirit and strength that pulled him through this difficult time and it will be a stark reminder for each of us that our day-to-day problems are not as hard as we might think when compared with what he endured. As you can imagine, I was elated to hear of Aiden's release in September and was nearly brought to tears after seeing his face again as we started this interview. Please enjoy this rare glimpse of hope and optimism from someone who survived a history-altering invasion and months in captivity as a modern-day POW as much as I did. Definitions: You'll hear a reference to “GRADS” which is a mobile artillery vehicle used by the Russians that fire 122mm rounds (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BM-21_Grad). Nothing beats real trial experience. You can read books and attend seminars, but to become the best you have to get in the ring. Aslin Tutuyan's first trial - a premises liability case against LA Times - set the tone for her career. Never shying away from a fight, as the personal injury trial attorney at Mandell Trial Lawyers she has walked away from massive companies like Disney and represented over 250 plaintiffs against SoCal Gas. On today's episode, we discuss pre-trial jitters and building a strong opening statement. We also dive into mental well-being, taking ownership of our happiness, and the importance of self-care for trial lawyers. What's In This Episode? Who is Aslin Tutuyan? When Aslin lost her father, how did she decide to seek help? How did the Plaintiffs Trial Academy prepare Aslin for her first trial? What excites Aslin about trial? How does Aslin manage stress during a trial? How can lawyers recover from less than desirable outcomes for their clients?

Oceania Month continues on Episode 182 as Conor, Mitch and Adrian welcome Australian designer of The Ratcatcher and the upcoming Drop Bears: Matt Aslin. Matt shares with us where his inspiration comes from, his differing approaches to designing Solo and multiplayer games, and the team hypothesise what the next Australian myths might feature in Matt's next game... Next the crew break down three of the categories from the upcoming Board Game BBQ Awards: Best Artwork, Best Expansion, and Game of the Year. You can find the link to the nomination form on all of our socials including Discord, Twitter, Instagram and on our Discord Community. Nominations are open to anyone in the community for three weeks. Facebook, Discord, Instagram, Twitter. Nominate in all 9 categories, or just a few. Once nominations close on Sunday 27th then we take the most-nominated game in each category and they become the official nominees for the BBQ Awards. Then we hand it over to our esteemed panel of judges; our Patreons; to vote. And this will all culminate in the BGBBQ Awards Night which once again will be filmed for YouTube, and we hope to have some surprises on the show as well. In the Board Game Bracket we settle the last match-up, Crokinole vs A Feast For Odin, before we cue up the next battle: Aeon's End vs Root. To make sure your favourite goes through to the next round make sure you vote on our socials. Finally, in Swear An Oath, Adrian smashed it out of the park on Hadrian's Wall during the week, but still hasn't played Lord of the Rings: Journeys In Middle Earth. Mitch really enjoyed the small-box game Harsh Shadows, and Conor got Zapotec to the table as well. New oaths include painting more Kingdom Death Monster minis (Adrian), Marvel United: X-Men (Mitch), and Dead Reckoning (Conor). Podcast guide Dr. Steve Banner talks with Nick Aslin, a great character who has an incredible knowledge of safaris in Zambia. Our chat meanders like the Luangwa River, from tales of lions through various fascinating facets of safaris in Zambia, its national parks, conservation, daily safari activities, walking safaris, bird watching and safari styles. “Zambia offers a very authentic safari experience and always has done. The place still excites me and being on safari, is still to me a tremendously exciting thing.” With 30 years spent in the country Nick has grown from a young professional wildlife guide with Norman Carr, a pioneer and founder of walking safaris in Africa where he worked in South Luangwa National Park to making safaris happen for travellers across the whole of the country through his own operations. “It's an enormous country and over a third of Zambia's land mass is set aside as protected territory … A typical two-week trip through Zambia... I'd like to start people in South Luangwa, the premier wildlife park in Zambia… for possibly a week split between camps. After, down to the Lower Zambezi… such a different river to the Luangwa… you can boat and canoe on the Zambezi… the populations are quite dense … although less variety … it is more aesthetic, it is a beautiful national park. Two particularly special parks… (then) logically you finish at Victoria Falls.” “Sustainability is important to those involved in Zambian tourism. A lot of what people around the world will pay for being on safari in Zambia will be ploughed back into communities and conservation of those habitats and the animals there.” “Wildlife tourism cannot exist on this planet unless it works hand in hand with the communities nearby.” On Zambian walking safaris: “One of the reasons that we have gained a reputation for our walking safaris in Zambia is that our walking safaris are conducted in a rather different way to other places. What is different is that our game viewing is done on foot… to get out and sneak up on big African animals.” “You can track fresh lion spoor for an hour… listening to alarm calls... you know you are on track of lion and eventually you come across them and you find them and see them a couple of hundred metres away under a bush and flicking a tail … and that encounter is infinitely more exciting than driving up on a pride of lions” “Immediately the bush all around us erupted and every lion just went in a direction away from us, which is their natural behaviour thankfully!” We also explore Busanga Plains, very much the jewel in the crown of the Kafue and Liuwa Plains in western Zambia as well as the annual bat migration in Kasanka and searching for shoebill stork in Bangweulu. On bird watching: “When I lived in the Luangwa, in the national park… me and a few friends, we used to go out and we called it the hundred club, we wouldn't come back for breakfast until we had ticked off a hundred species of birds… we'd do that in a couple of hours!” On the future of Zambian safari tourism: “As a country we are doing a good job in protecting our wildlife areas … so I believe we have a strong and good future ahead of us” Visit our website for your next tailor made Zambia safari: https://www.wildlifewilderness.com/destinations/safari-africa/zambia-safaris/ (https://www.wildlifewilderness.com/destinations/safari-africa/zambia-safaris/) or contact us at podcasts@wildlifewilderness.com Wildlife & Wilderness is ATOL Protected.
