He serves as the medical director of the Black Lung Program at Stone Mountain Health Services in southwest Virginia. He joins me today to discuss the black lung crisis in Central Appalachia, where over 1000 people have been diagnosed recently with progressive massive fibrosis, the most feared form of black lung disease. We discuss today what causes this completely preventable disease, how we can prevent it, and what makes for effective and equitable advocacy in often toxic political climates. Tá a mbuíochas léirithe ag teaghlach Emily Hand leo siúd a thacaigh leo an cailín Éireannach-Iosraelach atá naoi mbliana d'aois a fháil ar ais ó fhuadach Hamas. Tá sé ráite ag an Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, gur freagraíodh paidreacha an náisiúin nuair a fógraíodh go raibh Emily Hand saor ó bhraighdeanas in Gaza. Cuireadh síneadh leis an sos cogaidh idir Iosrael agus Hamas agus scaoileadh níos mó giall idir phríosúnaigh in Gaza agus Phalaistínigh i ngéibheann in Iosrael. Tugann an sos cogaidh deis cúnamh daonnúil a bhfuil géarghá leis a cheadú isteach i stráice Gaza. Tá sé fógartha go bhfuil an t-amhránaí agus cumadóir amhrán Shane MacGowan tar éis bháis. Scríobh na Pogues ar na meáin shóisialta, "Fuair Shane bás suaimhneach ag 3am ar maidin lena bhean chéile Victoria agus a theaghlach taobh leis." Dúirt an Coimisinéir Drew Harris leis an Choiste Oireachtais um Dhlí agus Cirt go bhfuil gardaí ag imscaradh dhá ghunna uisce, atá ar iasacht ón PSNI, i mBaile Átha Cliath faoi láthair. On the day the Dáil held a minute's silence for Shane MacGowan, the political system continued to grapple with the fallout from the Dublin riots. Helen McEntee may face a no confidence motion, while Drew Harris still refuses to accept that gardaí lost control of the capital's streets. Áine and the team consider the week's political developments.
Clare's GRA representative believes anyone looking to become a Garda would be "thinking twice" about it based on footage from last week's Dublin riots. It comes as the Garda Commissioner will face questions from TDs and Senators at an Oireachtas Justice Committee this afternoon. Drew Harris was to appear alongside the Justice Minister, but Helen McEntee is standing in for the Taoiseach at leaders questions. Over the course of the events which took place in the capital last Thursday, over 400 Gardaí were deployed, with several sustaining injuries, one seriously injured, three patrol cars damaged and eight other Garda vehicles extensively damaged. Clare Garda Paul Crowley says the level of abuse endured by members, coupled with the lack of training given in how to appropriately use force, means aspiring Gardaí are being discouraged from pursuing the career.
On Wednesday's Morning Focus, Alan Morrissey was joined by Timmy Dooley, Fianna Fáil Senator from Mountshannon, who is calling for the Garda Commissioner to step down. The Clare Senator told the Seanad that frontline gardaí don't think Drew Harris “has their back." Some opposition parties have called on both Commissioner Harris and Justice Minister Helen McEntee to resign, arguing their positions have become untenable following last week's riots in the capital. Commissioner Harris is set to appear before the Oireachtas Justice Committee this afternoon. Justice Minister Helen McEntee was also due to be there, but will be standing in for the Taoiseach at leaders questions in the Dáil instead. Picture (c) by Stephen Barnes from Getty Images via Canva

Summary Thomas Leahy (Website; LinkedIn) and Eleanor Williams (Website; Twitter) join Andrew to discuss the intelligence war during “the Troubles.” Thomas lives in Cardiff and Eleanor lives in Belfast. What You'll Learn Intelligence The Troubles through the lens of intelligence Some key intelligence players in the Northern Ireland conflict How the IRA and the British Army adapted organizationally The role intelligence played in the end of the conflict Reflections The fluid nature of motivations and intentions How historic narratives shape and constrain the here-and-now And much, much more… Episode Notes From the late 60's to the late 90's Republican and Loyalist paramilitaries, and the British and Irish states, were engaged in a period known as “the Troubles”: a struggle to define or redefine the future of the island of Ireland. This is an issue with deep and complex roots, but the intelligence dimension of the period known as the Troubles is fascinating and often overlooked. To help us get our head around it all, Andrew sat down with two specialists to discuss all things intelligence and the Troubles: from the role that MI5 and MI6 played, to the Force Research Unit and the RUC Special Branch, through to how the IRA played the counterintelligence game and the role that informers, agents and moles, such as the notorious “Stakeknife,” played. Thomas is the author of the Intelligence War Against the IRA, while Eleanor is a doctoral candidate comparing intelligence use during the Northern Irish and Colombian conflicts. And… The head of the Republic of Ireland's police and security intelligence force, the Garda Síochána, is Drew Harris. Drew Harris was a career Royal Ulster Constabulary officer whose father, also a career RUC officer, was killed by the IRA in 1989. He was the first external appointee from outside the Garda. Quote of the Week "What's their [IRA] main role in this intelligence conflict?...one of the key points here…the IRA was quite highly regional regionalized. That's actually quite key to explain why British intelligence had some difficulties against them…Initially, it was set up similar to armed forces. It would have brigades, battalions and companies…the IRA operated this kind of army structure up to 1975…the IRA then switched to this new strategy…And part of this was to prevent mass infiltration, which had started to become a problem, particularly in Belfast pre-1975. So, what it adopted in Belfast and Derry was a cell structure." – Thomas Leahy Resources Books The Intelligence War Against the IRA, T. Leahy (CUP, 2020) Britain's Secret War Against the IRA, A.
