With the exception of *one* joke about The Bechtel Test pretty much everything said my Mister B is true. Yes ,that includes his Tom Cruise Gap and the bizarre Las Vegas Santa Claus story... The boys wrap up the year looking at the top film of 2024, Mr Smith battles his bad decisions from last night to talk about Red One and Mr Birch invents a movie rating system that may change your life... And, yes they are working on the Vegas movie but need a title. Please contact them on the usual channels. Music by the ever excellent Two Steps from Hell and Hidden Citizens.
Have you ever wondered what makes someone "real"? Well, we ponder that very existential question with artist Denise Prince with her influential movie choice Solaris from 1972. This Soviet science fiction drama presents alien life in the form of an ocean that seeps into our subconsciousness to artificially reveal people from our past, as the protagonist Kris is presented with his former wife who died from suicide. With Denise's interest in the organization of reality by our fantasies, we submerge into deep thoughts regarding human connections, the meaning of life and of course sex dolls! Tangents: artificial intelligence, Elon Musk, The Seven Year Itch, aging, Bechtel Test, mirrors in art, gravity, babies For more information about Denise's studio practice, check out her website www.deniseprince.com and Instagram @denise.prince.x Follow us on Instagram @artists.talk.movies Help support the podcast by purchasing t-shirts, totes, mugs, hats, etc!!!! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/erin-stafford/support
"I'm glad to be here with you Samwise Gamgee. Here at the end of all things." We watched The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King all by our damn selves and we're ready for second breakfast. OK let's be real, these movies aren't exactly passing the Bechtel Test but when the ladies are finally trotted out they're serving fragrance commercial Eleganza and we're loving every fleeting minute of it. Orlando Bloom as Legolas the Elf ignited many a sexual awakening and the Hobbits are really giving us a lot to work with in this episode. Did Frodo and Sam get gay Hobbit married on the side of that mountain? We like to think so. Once circuit-gay Gollum gets thrown into the volcano and destroys the Ring Frodo goes through his emo phase, Sam marries a lady-Hobbit and they both act like their mountain-top wedding never happened. A likely story. To cap off another group of 20 movies, Brendan and Jason discuss Alfred Hitchcock's suspense-filled The Lady Vanishes. How well does the movie age? Is it odd that the first 20-30 minutes are essentially a screwball comedy? Is this one of the oldest movies to pass the Bechtel Test? Plus - Jason makes a stand for "up-front credits," the guys discuss the characters of Charters & Caldicott along with their storied film career and much more. Trish is continuing to work on healing her knee pain so she can get back to training for a 5k, something she’s been wanting to do for years now. Jeremy is working on a pitch proposal for a non-fiction book catered toward authors and how to make websites more effective selling tools. Taking twenty years of website design he’s hoping to help authors discover how to spend their time more effectively and do away with wasted efforts. This month in Pop-Culture HistoryMASH aired its last episode, a two-hour special watched by a record 77% of the TV viewing populationLaura Kinney aka X-23 snikt onto the scene in 2004Nina Simone, an American singer, songwriter, musician, arranger, and civil rights activist, was born on the 21st. It places their appearance alongside broad and sweeping cultural trends in politics and pop culture. It’s definitely a scholarly work but not so dense that it can’t be enjoyed. Examining Black Panther, Black Lightning, Storm, Luke Cage, Blade, the Falcon, Nubia, and others, the book explores how powerful black superheroes are as a source of racial meaning, narrative, and imagination while also talking about them in the broader context of racial assumptions, politics, and black identity.Buy Super Black on AmazonJeremy's Geek Out!Saltire. Created by Diamond Steel Comics, Saltire is a hero born from Scottish origins. Focusing on Caledonian folklore and myths, creator John Ferguson and illustrator Claire Roe bring to life the spirit of Scotland. A peaceful land is being disturbed by inhuman legends and a growing power to the South and the clans must come together to create a being powerful enough to protect the land. Saltire is born. It takes the superhero dynamic and molds it into the mythos of a people and does an outstanding job representing Scotland and its people. The artwork is beautiful, alluring and the story weaves itself into history in a way that makes it a page turner.Watch the Trailer for Saltire: Legend EternalBuy the Comic on AmazonDeep Dive (Spoiler Alert)Birds of Prey (And The Fabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) “...the first superhero movie both written and directed solely by women, as well as the first modern R-rated superhero flick since Tank Girl.”What makes this movie so much fun? Women. Trish and Jeremy gush about how much they love the crazy over the top action. However, the thing they both agree on is the outstanding storyline that ties the five women together. There is some great conversation about differing views of the Bechtel Test. “Their fights aren’t about “wow look at me, I’m a girl taking charge of this situation, please give our corporate sponsors credit for this,” but rather, just women fighting to survive... these women are not just powerful, but they also care...Female empowerment doesn’t have to be an in-your-face moment but rather is in the subtlety of female strength.” - The Mary SueQuestion of the Week: What superhero are you tired of seeing on the screen and who would you like to see instead?

You know how the Bechtel Test judges literature by whether there are two female characters who have a conversation about something other than a man? Hear how Jennifer Robson employs a mix of true-life and invented characters to portray the Parisian Lost Generation world of Hemingway and Fitzgerald, while still passing the Test.
