**Discussion begins at 4:15**Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson, 99 years ago this week. Rising to fame in the 1950s, she captivated audiences with her beauty, charm, and vulnerability. She starred in numerous successful films, including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, and Some Like It Hot, solidifying her status as a Hollywood legend. Despite her glamorous public image, Norma Jeane battled with personal struggles including mental health issues, substance abuse, and a string of troubled relationships. On August 5, 1962, Norma Jeane was found dead in her Los Angeles home at the age of 36. The official cause of death was listed as a probable suicide due to an overdose of barbiturates. A bottle of sleeping pills was found near her bed, and she had reportedly been dealing with depression in the weeks leading up to her death. However, her death has remained shrouded in mystery and controversy. Numerous inconsistencies in the timeline of her final hours, the delay in contacting authorities, and the disappearance of personal documents and records have fueled speculation that her death may not have been a simple suicide. Some believe that foul play was involved, citing her alleged affairs with high-profile political figures such as President John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert F. Kennedy as a possible motive for a cover-up. Other theories range from involvement by the CIA or FBI to suggestions that Norma was silenced due to knowledge of state secrets. Whether her death was a tragic accident, a suicide, or something more sinister, it remains one of Hollywood's most tragic mysteries.Send us a textSupport the showTheme song by INDA

Born in Austria, Vanessa Brown and her family fled the Nazis and made their way to America where she soon found success on the Broadway stage and as a juvenile contestant on The Quiz Kids. She broke into films in the 1940s before returning to the stage, where she originated the iconic role made famous by Marilyn Monroe in the original production of The Seven Year Itch. We'll hear Ms. Brown in an adaptation of a classic urban legend of paranoia and deception - "The Vanishing Lady" (AFRS rebroadcast from April 7, 1957). Then, she goes undercover to catch her sister's killer in "Vamp Till Dead" (AFRS rebroadcast from September 29, 1957). Plus, she finds romance at sea in "It's a Date" from Hollywood Star Time (originally aired on CBS on January 11, 1947) and she discusses her career on screen and as a Quiz Kid in an excerpt from an episode from July 21, 1946.

In part four of our series on Marilyn Monroe, we take a look at what life was like as the biggest star in the world. This episode of Smart Books & Movies reflects Tom's musings on love and nostalgia. He begins by sharing his recent benefit performance in Washington, D.C., and a heartwarming anecdote about his aunt's banana bread. Visiting his father's grave at Arlington National Cemetery reconnects him with poignant memories. From there, Tom transitions to a book report on Richard Ben Cramer's Joe DiMaggio: The Hero's Life. He provides fascinating details about DiMaggio's baseball career, family background, and personality, focusing on how he was often perceived as a distant and private figure. Despite his detachment from teammates and the public, Joe upheld a high standard as a Yankee, often emphasizing the importance of perfection both on and off the field. The most captivating part of the episode involves Joe DiMaggio's relationship with Marilyn Monroe. Tom discusses how their love story began, starting with their first date and evolving into marriage. Despite Monroe being late for their initial meeting and her reluctance toward dating athletes, they quickly became an iconic couple. However, their relationship was fraught with challenges due to Joe's controlling nature and Marilyn's career ambitions. He details how Joe struggled to accept Marilyn's stardom, culminating in a violent argument after she filmed the famous subway grate scene in The Seven Year Itch. This incident led Marilyn to divorce Joe just a few weeks later. Tom continues by highlighting Joe's unwavering loyalty even after their divorce, describing how Joe intervened when Marilyn was involuntarily placed in a psychiatric ward, ensuring she received proper care. Marilyn later reconnected with Joe, and the two planned to remarry. Tragically, Marilyn died before this could happen. Tom narrates Joe's heartbreaking grief at her funeral and his commitment to placing roses at her grave twice a week until he passed away. Tom concludes by reflecting on Joe DiMaggio's lasting love for Marilyn Monroe, emphasizing how his devotion transcended the tumultuous aspects of their relationship and the external pressures of stardom. He leaves listeners with the powerful lesson that love can endure despite hardships, providing hope and strength even in the most challenging times. Hooray for humanity! Since the 1920s, fashion has played a central role in Hollywood. As the movie-going population consisted largely of women, studios made a concerted effort to attract a female audience by foregrounding fashion. Magazines featured actresses like Jean Harlow and Joan Crawford bedecked in luxurious gowns, selling their glamour as enthusiastically as the film itself. Whereas actors and actresses previously wore their own clothing, major studios hired costume designers and wardrobe staff to fabricate bespoke costumes for their film stars. Designers from a variety of backgrounds, including haute couture and art design, were offered long-term contracts to work on multiple movies. Though their work typically went uncredited, they were charged with creating an image for each star that would help define an actor both on- and off-screen. The practice of working long-term with a single studio disappeared when the studio system began unraveling in the 1950s. By the 1970s, studios had disbanded their wardrobe departments and auctioned off their costumes and props. In Designing Hollywood: Studio Wardrobe in the Golden Age, Christian Esquevin showcases the designers who dressed Hollywood's stars from the late 1910s through the 1960s and the unique symbiosis they developed with their studios in creating iconic looks. Studio by studio, Esquevin details the careers of designers like Vera West, who worked on Universal productions such as Phantom of the Opera (1925), Dracula (1931), and Bride of Frankenstein (1931); William Travilla, the talent behind Marilyn Monroe's dresses in Gentleman Prefer Blondes (1953) and The Seven Year Itch (1955); and Walter Plunkett, the Oscar-winning designer for film classics like Gone with the Wind (1939) and An American in Paris (1951). Featuring black and white photographs of leading ladies in their iconic looks as well as captivating original color sketches, Designing Hollywood takes the reader on a journey from drawing board to silver screen.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/writers-on-film. “The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” — Mark Twain Dr. Mark Goulston is a leading psychiatrist and communication expert. His mega-bestseller, Just Listen, is regarded as the world's #1 book on listening. Among his extensive list of professional achievements, Dr. Goulston has been a hostage negotiation trainer for the FBI; a consultant for renowned companies (including Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, and Disney); a contributor to the Harvard Business Review; and author of 9 books that have been translated into 28 languages. Since we first met in Episode 109, Dr. Goulston has become a close friend and mentor of mine. He's exceptionally good at what he does and I look forward to any opportunity we get to catch up. Recently, Dr. Goulston was given some unexpected news that made him rethink everything he's doing in his life. I asked if he'd be up for a conversation on the podcast so we could talk about that openly and help others who might be in a similar situation... Like he has done with every request I've asked of him, he graciously agreed. In this episode: How to save your marriage and create happiness with your family A simple exercise to win every day The gift of death – and the urgency of doing good; and How to get clear on what's most important to you, before it's too late. Let's WIN THE DAY with Dr. Mark Goulston! _

It's been seven years since the Brexit vote. Are you surprised we're still speaking about it? We're not. Speaking of votes, there are three by-elections coming up because Tories keep quitting. Is our electoral system fair? Is it democratic? Or is it time for a change? And in the extra bit for subscribers the panel discusses how departed MPs should behave post parliament. That's Oh God, What Now? With special guest and founder of Fair Vote UK, Kyle Taylor. “Brexit is this massive thing that has turned my life upside down.” – Alex Andreou “The Tories need to move on from Brexit but Sunak isn't the man to do that.” – Hannah Fearn “I think the EU referendum in 2016 was the beginning of the end of democracy in our parts of the world.” – Kyle Taylor “Without question we're going to see what the role of AI does to our elections soon.” – Kyle Taylor www.patreon.com/ohgodwhatnow Presented by Managing Editor Jacob Jarvis with Hannah Fearn, Alex Andreou and guest Kyle Taylor. Have you ever wondered what makes someone "real"? Well, we ponder that very existential question with artist Denise Prince with her influential movie choice Solaris from 1972. This Soviet science fiction drama presents alien life in the form of an ocean that seeps into our subconsciousness to artificially reveal people from our past, as the protagonist Kris is presented with his former wife who died from suicide. With Denise's interest in the organization of reality by our fantasies, we submerge into deep thoughts regarding human connections, the meaning of life and of course sex dolls! Tangents: artificial intelligence, Elon Musk, The Seven Year Itch, aging, Bechtel Test, mirrors in art, gravity, babies For more information about Denise's studio practice, check out her website www.deniseprince.com and Instagram @denise.prince.x Follow us on Instagram @artists.talk.movies Help support the podcast by purchasing t-shirts, totes, mugs, hats, etc!!!! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/erin-stafford/support
