Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 101 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Griffin Schiller to discuss the next film in their Peter Jackson series, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). One final time, in the winter of 2003, the world ran to the theaters to see the final chapter in what was the greatest, most important cinematic trilogy with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. In the climatic ending of Peter Jackson's masterpiece, we find the war for Middle Earth taking full effect as Frodo and Sam get closer and closer to destroying the ring of power once and for all. With many memorable moments (and a few too many endings?), Jackson was able to stick the landing, resulting the movie event of the 21st century, the highest grossing film of 2003, and performing a clean sweep as Return of the King went on to win eleven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director for Jackson. Ryan, Jay, and Griffin break down their thoughts on the third film in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, if the extended cut of the film adds anything but runtime to the final film, the ending controversy, every character's arc and how they are wrapped up, how emotional the film is, if this is the most important, best blockbuster of the 21st century, and so much more. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h25m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Peter Jackson with a review of his next film, King Kong. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Music: MUSICALIFE, from Pond5 (intro) and “B-3” from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).
In the fourth of five special episodes to celebrate this podcast's 300th episode, focused on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings, and we're diving deep into the epic finale of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Return of the King. The Return of the King had a monumental impact on the film industry, and epic box office success, raking in over $1.1 billion worldwide. The film swept the Academy Awards, winning all 11 nominations, including Best Picture, a feat shared only with Titanic and Ben-Hur. But it's not all awards and box office records; it's an incredible journey of characters we love, breathtaking visual effects, and the unforgettable musical score by Howard Shore, which has left an indelible mark on cinema. This episode also goes into the incredible work by Weta Workshop on the rest of the visual effects, plus the award-winning hair, make-up and prosthetics.Peter Jackson proved unfilmable material was not only filmable, but that he could create a cinematic trilogy masterpiece with an inimitable legacy, that even he himself couldn't match again, but I'll come back to that next episode. This episode is Part 3 of a three-part story, as well as Part 4 of a five-part group of episodes. This week on Comics and Chronic, we finish out our coverage of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy with The Return Of The King directed by Peter Jackson. The boys recorded this episode one day before Trump takes his office. The boys gain another moniker. Is Return Of The King better on a rewatch? Is it the least favorite of all three movies? What are the differences between the ending of the movie and the end of the books? There are moments in this movie where the CGI doesn't hold up. Anthony doesn't put respect on Viggo Mortensen's name. Luigi Mangione is our Aragorn. Frodo loses our respect when he makes Samwise cry. Jake & Cody are Sméagol and Deagol. Is this movie really Pippin's movie? Is he responsible for Gandalf becoming OP? Almost every character including villains be getting high! Is there an orc in the movie that's supposed to look like Harvey Weinstein? Anthony gives us his connection to Regis Philbin. Is Back To The Future considered one of the best trilogies? What are the best comedy trilogies? The hype for Daredevil Reborn is strong. Cody hates the MCU so much he goes back & rewatches films to give them a lower score? Go listen now! In 2003 The Lord of the Rings trilogy came to it's stunning conclusion with The Return of the King. Everything has been building to this moment, Aragorn ascenending to the throne, Frodo and Sam fast approaching Mount Doom, Merry and Pippen picking they're own teams and Legolas...killing an elephant or something. “Granny shagger!” - Steve, on Aragorn and Arwen's vast age gap On this week's We ❤️ Movies, we're chatting about the absolutely magnificent conclusion to the journey, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King! First of all, yes, we are discussing the four-hour and twenty-three-minute extended edition! How magnificent is John Noble's demise in this movie? Of all the stuff they could've cut from the theatrical, why on Earth did they ditch Sarumon's big fall? How horny is Eowyn for Aragorn? Was there a funnier way to include Sean Bean in that one scene? And should The Hobbit trilogy be re-evaluated? (Andrew thinks so!) PLUS: Samwise is framed for leaving nothing but Krackel in the Halloween variety pack! The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King stars Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Orlando Bloom, Billy Boyd, Bernard Hill, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, John Noble, Miranda Otto, John Rhys-Davies, Andy Serkis, Liv Tyler, Karl Urban, Hugo Weaving, David Wenham, and Ian McKellen as Gandalf; directed by Peter Jackson.
