It's time for another Mind Gap Podcast! This week, Doug and Justin figure out which fictional gadget they'd want if they could have one. Justin foolishly picked the Iron Man suit and Doug promptly talked him out of it, likely saving his life in the process. It was a heroic move on Doug's part. The dorks then shift into the main topic of which side characters in film and TV stole the show. The guys talk about Tormund Giantsbane from Game of Thrones, Luis from Ant-Man, Han Solo, Samwise Gamgee, Garth Algar from Wayne's World, and a bunch more. Things are wrapped up with another round of the movie clip guessing game, where Doug plays clips from different movies and Justin does his best to guess which films they're from. Check out our YouTube channel where we livestream our new podcast episodes every Tuesday at 8pmCT and our video game stream every Saturday at 8pmCT. Gandalf offers wisdom with “I will not say, do not weep, for not all tears are an evil,” and celebrates victory with “A great shadow has departed.” Frodo's chilling, “The Ring is mine,” marks his moment of succumbing to temptation, while Aragorn's quiet resolve in “For Frodo,” before charging into battle, leaves a lasting impression. Hark, Void! Middle-Earth's 007, Gamgee, Samwise Gamgee, saves the world from ring-obsessed Gollum while Frodo staggers into danger constantly. Literally, Elrond will only let Arwen marry Aragorn AFTER he's defeated ultimate evil in the world. Now THAT'S a father-in-law. ORCS HAVE NAMES TOO!! And feelings! No one hates orcs more than other orcs! Aragorn runs like a Muppet, Gandalf acts like a dad on a road trip, wraith tractor-beams, Jennifer Coolidge has thoughts on Minas Morgul, and Osgiliath is such a pleasant word to say. But really, this movie is about the Rohirrim and Theoden's epic speech. But also, they should just have armies of women to fight the Nazgûl. DEEEAAAAATTHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(Cue tears)
The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater. — Tolkien, The Fellowship of the RingThroughout The Lord of the Rings, doom and tragedy are constantly on the doorstep of J.R.R. Tolkien's heroes. Failure and defeat happen frequently. The Witch King of Angmar overpowers Merry and Éowyn, Boromir is struck down by Uruk-hai scouts leaving the Fellowship without its great son of Gondor, Frodo is overcome by the power of the Ring on more than one occasion; including at the Crack of Doom when he must throw it into the fire, Gandalf seemingly perishes in the Mines of Moria.Tolkien coined a term in his early academic writings, Eucatastrophe, to describe an unexpected peril resolved by an unexpected hope. The Greek prefix "eu-" means “good”And “catastrophe”, of course, implies disaster or upheaval. I often imagine a table being flipped upside down. The table is adorned in fine food and wine, among other trappings of the good life. Then someone ruins it all in anger. They flip the table over, destroying all of it. But on the bottom of the table, the dinner guests see a treasure map that has been etched into the wood of the table. The dinner isn't necessarily redeemed at that very moment, but there is now a bright and shining hope that it could be. Good comes from the bad. “-I am a Christian, and indeed a Roman Catholic, so that I do not expect ‘history' to be anything but a ‘long defeat' –though it contains (and in a legend may contain more clearly and movingly) some samples or glimpses of final victory.” - Tolkien, Letter 195 It should go without saying that in the Christian world, for believers and non-believers alike, the crucifixion of Jesus Christ rests as the great beacon of eucatastrophe. It captures Tolkien's notion of “Christian joy…which produces tears because it is qualitatively so like sorrow”. There's a strange place in the human heart where Grief and Joy meet and reconcile their differences. They become one. “Is everything sad going to come untrue?”My Dad died rather suddenly a little over a week ago. I'm in the stage of grief where even as I write this, I am confused by the words. I don't understand what has happened. The funeral, eulogy, and urn of ashes feel very much like a dream and every few hours I blink rapidly in recognition that it was all real. In the final installment of The Lord of the Rings, Samwise Gamgee awakes in bed after the destruction of the Ring. He is in the presence of Gandalf. He mutters about the whole adventure having been a dream and remarks that he is glad to be awake. Then he turns over and sees Frodo lying next to him, missing a finger from his final confrontation with Gollum. “Full memory flooded back”Gandalf asks Sam as the Hobbit awakes, “Master Samwise, how do you feel?”Sam is described as laying back with his mouth agape, fumbling through bewilderment and joy, and unable to speak. Then he gasps.“Is everything sad going to come untrue? What's happened to the world?” asks Sam.It's all true, and all that has happened will remain so. But there is a light that is coming. That's the whole meaning of the Christian Advent season where for four weeks, candles are lit in the runup to Christ's birth. It's a dark season. The sun sets early and it's cold as death. I've never hated December the way I hate it right now. I so badly want the sun and its warmth around me. But light is coming. There is a treasure map beneath the ruined feast. In all of the Tolkien scenes I described at the start of this entry, there is a positive resolution brought about by unexpected forces. Eucatastrophe sings in the pitch black of night. “And he who was seated on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.'” - Revelation 21:5 Whatever you're going through, good can come of it. Debts can be paid and in ways you never imagined possible. Be faithful, honest, and true in your dealings with others. Do not despair. Warmer days are coming. Samwise Gamgee was an iconic character in the Lord of the Rings series. He was an everyday gardener who was put into some unbelievable situations. The amazing thing about Sam was that he didn't let the good or bad situations change him. He had a strong identity and stuck to it no matter the situation. Many men today are facing an identity crisis. This is due to their lack of foundational values. When a man has strong values, he will often have a strong identity. He can stand up in hard situations and is less likely to back down in the pressure cooker of life.Today's show discusses how our values help shape our identity. The Current Identity Crisis among Men“You have to be great and world-changing!”All the unrealistic men on TV and social media.Who am I? “Samwise Gamgee, my dear hobbit –indeed, Sam my dearest hobbit, friend of friends.” There's something spectacularly lovely about a true friend.A friend who loves what you love, who understands your deep longings, and who helps you see the things that are truly beautiful --even in the midst of brokenness. All relationships are fraught and sometimes the obstacles to meaningful friendships can feel insurmountable. Today I had the great pleasure of talking with one of my favorite YouTubers, Sam of the channel Master Samwise. He is an insightful film and TV critic, and has created several video essays on the virtuous masculinity of some of my favorite fictional characters: Aragorn and Samwise Gamgee of The Lord of the Rings and Iroh of the Fire Nation from Avatar: The Last Airbender. You can find Master Samwise's channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@master_samwise And check out this one on General Iroh: https://youtu.be/IzINu0wezWU?si=8qDO-oYY1Fp3DruJ We referenced this video early on in the interview: Why Men Need Male Heroes: https://youtu.be/DkKcc-71fIU?si=vWYi3CQQ61wQglxC
Craig and Rebecca are joined by special guest Ava Val (@AvaValComedy) to talk about the Pauly Shore teen/cave-man comedy. We're arguing for the school bully who is trying to keep a creepy Samwise Gamgee away from his girlfriend and who very rightly suspects that there is something suspicious about the new exchange student. Catch Ava Val's comedy special "So Brave" debuting on "800 Pound Gorilla Media's" YouTube channel June 30, 2024 at 8:00PM EST (youtube.com/@800pgm). I am not exaggerating when I tell you that this episode could transform your life! I speak from personal experience because the practice I am going to tell you about changed mine. This will be the first of an Enneagram series where I talk about the struggles of all nine types, how those struggles effect our thoughts and feelings and then how you can reframe the thoughts and coach your children to do the same. I started a podcast in mid April 2024 called Not So Normal Parenting. There are some episodes there that are not on this channel so check it out if you are a fan of Myers Briggs and the Enneagram. You can also grab a copy of my best selling book ebtitled Your Child's Inner Drive: Parenting by Personality from Toddlers toTeens. I was a facilitator for team building and realized I could use these amazing tools with my own family team since I was parenting a son and daughter who were as different as Bob Ross and the Black Widow, you can check out my interview with them on the channel. My daughter is an ISTP type 8, my son is an ISFJ Type 9 and I am an ENFJ Type 4. Since parents are like the Ceo's of their fmily, I work with them to help them see the connections and disconnections in their brain wiring.Parenting isn't intuitive if you have kids who are your opposites! You can check out my work, blog and get a free child temperament test at WendyGossett.com Did you know you have over 60,000 thoughts every single day buzzing around your head? That's a lot to keep track of! Some of us are completely unaware of what is going on inside of our head. This is unwise, considering the fact that our thoughts create our feelings and our feelings determine our actions. In fact, all your emotions, good, bad, happy and sad are 100% generated by your thoughts. Your unconscious thoughts are sort of like an unsupervised West Highland White terrior in a closet full of shoes and flip flops. Oh that example sounds sort of specific? That's because my Westie, Milo, loved to chew and sever the toe piece of all our flip flops. All I needed to do was to be aware of where the flip flops were at all times, even in the middle of summer; and where Milo was, even though he was a crazy puppy with Zoomies, so that the destruction did not occur. Not an easy task! Just like being aware of all 60,000 thoughts every day is not easy either. In episode 12 and 3 I give an introduction to an amazing tool for growing human potential called the Enneagram. This tool is dependent upon thought awareness. Why? Because being aware and then reframing your thought patterns is the single most powerful way to change your life for the better! Later in this episode I am going to give very specific examples of what a type 9 Peacemaker parent's mind struggles with, how these thoughts negatively effect their feelings and how the thoughts can be reframed to turn the feeling around. I will then teach any parent how to coach their type 9 child using powerful questions generated by the Enneagram. Love this lady, love this podcast! Wendy Gossett speaks with such honesty and says it like it is!! I love how real she is and how open her family is to helping others understand one another. I have never heard such powerful insight into how we operate as unique individuals. After reading Wendy's book “Your Child's Inner Drive” and working with Wendy To better appreciate the personalities of my children, we have so much more peace and unity in our family relationships!! I can now honor my teens for who they are and how God created them instead of feel frustrated by our differences. I am so happy she now has a podcast so I can continue to get a dose of her wisdom and teaching! May everyone be blessed as they learn this life giving tool for all relationships. William James a philosopher and psychologist, regarded as one of the most influential figures in the development of modern psychology said that. "The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind." - William James My thought patterns were extremely damaging and involved comparison and shame. I will do an entire episode on the Type 4 and Type 3 which are my main types, but in a nutshell, These thoughts caused me to feel depressed and since a Type 4 fixates on their feelings, I could go into a funk that was hard to shake. But I began the practice of being conscious of my thoughts, taking every thought captive and reframing those thoughts to God's truth about how He sees me. So, here's is how you can begin to supervise those thoughts that are zooming around in your head. Begin by simply asking yourself, "What am I thinking?" on a regular basis. It's like a little mental check-in that can make a really big difference. You can also let your feelings tell you when to check in on your thoughts. If all of a sudden you begin to feel a tightening in your chest or a twisting in your gut, it is time to press rewind on your thoughts and ask yourself what negative thought created the negative feeling. The Enneagram gives all of us clues into what these negative thoughts might be so they are easier to recognize and bring into consciousness. I am going to do 8 more episodes for every type, to uncover the biggest struggle of each and all the thoughts that revolve around it. If you have never done this before, I challenge you to keep a thought journal for a week. When you ask yourself the question, “What am I thinking?” grab a pen and paper and let your thoughts flow. Write whatever comes to mind without stopping, no filtering, just get it all out. It will be sort of like cleaning out your closet. What are the thoughts you want to wear and what are the thoughts that need to get bagged up and sent to Goodwill or sold on Ebay if you have clothes that someone else would actually want. My Lululemon wearers know! I still don't wear Lulu even though I get a 30% discount for being a fitness instructor. So purge your mind of the negative thoughts so you can make room for the new positive ones you are going to create. So the first question to ask is “What am I thinking?” Next up, ask yourself, "Why am I choosing to think this?" This helps you realize that it's not your circumstances that are forcing you feel a certain way, it's your thoughts about those circumstances. Sometimes, our reasons for thinking certain thoughts are a bit off-base, so this question can help straighten things out. The Enneagram tells us what are well worn unconscious thought patterns are. In episode 3 and 12, we talk about the fixations of each type which can also help you identify these unconscious habitual thought patterns. SO again, the second question is, “Why am I choosing to think this?” Next,, check in with yourself and ask, "How does this thought feel?" Pay attention to your emotions because they're little warning lights, sort of like “the low fuel light in your car” telling you if a thought is helpful or not. If it doesn't feel good, maybe it's time to let go or reframe that thought. And again, if you're feeling a bit off but not sure why, ask yourself, "What's the thought behind this feeling?" It's a sneaky way to peek into your mind and understand what's really going on in there. Oh, and here's a powerful one: "How do I want to feel?" Reminding yourself that you're in control of your feelings by choosing your thoughts can be a game-changer. Knowing how you want to feel can kickstart some serious action, even if it's just changing your mindset. So let's dive into what this looks like for a Type 9 parent or a Type 9 child or spouse. Type Nines are Peacemakers so their false identity is that they are never in conflict. They fixate on the external world around them, seeing every little detail, so they don't have to focus on their internal, less than peaceful thoughts. A Type 9's struggle is sloth. You know sloth, like the adorable cousin of the anteater that moves really slooooow. Sloth is not laziness but more a hesitation to take action, driven by their desire for harmony. They may procrastinate or avoid decisions that could disrupt peace. Think of them as easygoing and chill, but sometimes slow to start on big tasks. They're not lazy; they just prefer to avoid conflict and maintain balance. Here are some negative thoughts the Type 9 Peacemaker in your life might have: Type Nine Negative Thoughts: "My opinions and desires don't matter as much as others'." "I must avoid conflict at all costs to maintain peace." "I fear being seen as assertive or confrontational." "I'm responsible for keeping everyone happy and harmonious." "I'm not important enough to speak up or assert myself." "If I express my needs, I'll burden others and disrupt the harmony." "I'm afraid of expressing disagreement because it might lead to rejection or abandonment." "I often feel overlooked or invisible in social situations." "I'm afraid of making decisions because I don't want to upset anyone." "I feel guilty when prioritizing my own needs over others'." "I constantly second-guess myself and doubt my own worth." "I often feel overwhelmed by the needs and expectations of others." Negative Emotions for Type 9: Avoidance, frustration or stagnation since their main focus is avoiding conflict. They may struggle with making decisions or asserting their own preferences, leading to feelings of indecisiveness or being overlooked. Type 9s may suppress their own needs and desires to maintain harmony, leading to feelings of resentment towards others who seem more assertive or self-centered. They may feel passive or powerless in their own lives, allowing others to make decisions for them or feeling overshadowed by more dominant personalities. Type 9s may neglect their own needs and desires in favor of maintaining peace and harmony in their relationships, leading to feelings of self-forgetfulness or self-neglect. Type 9s may struggle with inertia or a lack of motivation to pursue their goals or dreams, feeling stuck or complacent in their current circumstances. Type 9s may struggle with emotional numbness or disconnect from their inner desires and passions, leading to feelings of apathy or disconnection from life. My husband is a type 9 and he barely batted an eye when both my kids left for college at the same time due to Covid. He buried his emotions whereas myself, a type 4 who fixates on emotions, was in a desperate place, trying to navigate the massive change in my identity. I was in his face begging him to join me on the journey to finding our new normal. We had never had conflict in our marriage, but the empty nest nearly broke us apart. I wanted to call ourselves New Chapter Adapters instead of empty nesters, but I was the only one outwardly and actively fighting to adapt. I couldn't see it, but he was adapting by numbing out and avoiding me! Nines avoid conflict and I was conflict personified! I will do a whole episode on how we a Type 9 and a Type 4 crawled out of the pit with the help of the Enneagram, but if you are in a similar situation and would like to read the blog post about it right now, email me at wendy@wendygossett.com. Or ask about scheduling a virtual appointment. I help couples see their blind spots all the time through Myers Briggs and the Enneagram. You can also get more insight into the type 9 by checking out Episode 11 which is an interview with my Type 9 Peacemaker son, Nathan. Reframing for Type 9: Recognize that conflict and discomfort are natural parts of life and can lead to growth and positive change. Embrace opportunities to express your needs and assert yourself in a healthy and respectful manner. Coach your child by asking, "What do you think are some healthy ways to express your needs when you're feeling uncomfortable?" Then have them practice in a safe situation. Trust in your ability to make decisions and assert your preferences. Remember that your opinions and desires are valid and worthy of consideration. Celebrate the conflicts your child has overcome."What are some decisions you've made recently that you feel proud of?" "How can you remind yourself that your opinions and desires are important and worthy of consideration?" Say something to yourself like, “ It's ok to Voice Your Choice Honor your own needs and desires without feeling guilty or resentful. Practice assertiveness and boundary-setting in your relationships to ensure that your voice is heard and respected. "Can you think of a time when you felt guilty or resentful for expressing your needs? How can you honor your needs without feeling guilty?" "What are some ways you can assert yourself respectfully in your friendships or at school?" Take an active role in shaping your own life and pursuing your goals. Trust in your ability to make decisions and assert yourself in a respectful and assertive manner. "What are some goals you have for yourself right now? How can you take steps to pursue them?" "When was a time you felt proud of standing up for yourself or expressing your opinion?" Prioritize self-care and self-expression in your life. Take time to connect with your inner desires and passions and honor your own needs and priorities. "What activities or hobbies make you feel happiest and most fulfilled?" "How can you make sure you're taking care of yourself emotionally and physically?" Break tasks and decisions into smaller, more manageable steps, and take proactive measures to address challenges or conflicts as they arise. "What's one task you've been avoiding lately? How can you break it down into smaller steps to make it more manageable?" "What's one small action you can take today to address a challenge you're facing?" Practice mindfulness and self-reflection to connect with your emotions and innermost desires. Allow yourself to feel and express your emotions in healthy and constructive ways. "What are some emotions you've been feeling lately? How can you express them in a healthy way?" "What are some activities that help you feel more connected to your emotions and inner self?" Motivation: Identify your values and passions and take steps to align your actions with your deepest desires and aspirations. Seek out opportunities for growth and personal development and embrace new experiences with enthusiasm and curiosity. "What's one change you'd like to see in your life right now? How can you take control and make it happen?" "How can you remind yourself that you have the power to shape your own future?" "What's one new experience you've been curious about trying? How can you take steps to make it happen?" “What are some things that are really important to you? How can you make sure your actions reflect those values?" You can meditate on scriptures or inspirational quotes that will address the type 9 struggle of sloth. Look for my online scripture journal for Type 9's at WendyGossett.com which will be coming soon! You can also look at Bible or book characters that had type 9 tendencies and overcame them. An example that comes to mind is Moses. He was a very reluctant, but fearless leader and the only character in the Bible that God called friend. Another perfect example of a Type 9 is Samwise Gamgee from "The Lord of the Rings" - Sam is loyal, supportive, and values harmony within the fellowship. He often puts others' needs before his own and seeks to maintain peace among the group. "I can do all things through him who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13 (ESV) "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." - Joshua 1:9 (NIV) "You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great." - Zig Ziglar "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step." - Lao Tzu Or from Finding Nemo… "Just keep swimming." - Dory, Finding Nemo

I have been a fan of Jason Jones ever since he was an executive producer of Bella, still one of my all-time favorite movies. He was also an associate producer of The Stoning of Soraya M, is a pro-life activist, popular podcast host, and tireless human rights worker. His humanitarian efforts have aided millions in Afghanistan, Nigeria, and the Ukraine, as well as pregnancy centers and women's shelters throughout North America. Jason's pro-life journey and work began while he was playing on the high school football team. The day after homecoming, on a Saturday morning, his girlfriend rode her bike over, knocked on the door and came into his room, waking him up with the words, “I'm pregnant.” In the interview he details the tragic event leading to the forced trimester abortion of the child that put him on a path to rescue and defend innocent and vulnerable people all over the world. These range from the child in the womb to the over one million Uighurs in Chinese concentration camps who are having their organs harvested and forcibly being mass sterilized in Chinese occupied East Turkestan. And the reason for the imprisonment of the Uighurs, the Communist Chinese party (CCP) says, is to prevent domestic terrorism, and root out hate speech. That means rooting out those with religious beliefs who would seek to build a culture other than the official government position. The CCP is also importing vast numbers of people into this area to dilute the population. Does any of this sound familiar to those of us living in the United States of America? The Great Campaign against the Great Reset, Jason's new book, got its name from what Pope John Paul II wrote in Evangelium Vitae, the Gospel of Life: "What is urgently called for is a general mobilization of consciences and a united ethical effort to activate a great campaign in support of life. All together, we must build a new culture of life" – Pope St. John Paul the Great Jason, as did John Paul II, has a special place in his heart for young people and opens his book with a chapter dedicated to them. “The moral imagination of our young people has been utterly obliterated by porn and by TikTok, YouTube, FB and Instagram reels. You won't want to miss this important show and please share it with your friends, family and young people! “It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo,” says Samwise Gamgee. “Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going, because they were holding on to something. That there is some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for.”Follow the Jason Jones show PodcastThe vulnerable people project.comThe great campaign.org Get the book. Learning in Wartime with Lewis and Tolkien and Joe LaconteTrinity Forum Senior Fellow Joe Loconte joins our podcast to discuss the friendship and legacy of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. He highlights how their wartime experiences, and their subsequent refusal to become disillusioned and disenchanted in the aftermath of World War I allowed for some of the greatest works of literature in modern history. In the moral and cultural tumult of the inter-war years, their example of resilience and imagination is inspiring. As Joe Loconte shared, they were using their art to actively resist the totalizing and dehumanizing ideologies that were ascendent in their day:And it's just no coincidence. They are deliberately pushing back, I think, in a way that, that some biographers have not maybe fully appreciated. They are pushing back in their writings against the totalitarian impulse and trying to defend the role of the individual, the choices that individuals have to make.Joe Loconte reminds us of the surprising return of hope for those who look up—as Samwise Gamgee says in the Lord of the Rings,” In the end the shadow was only a small and passing thing. Over the last few weeks, I have developed a slight curiosity with J.R.R. Tolkien - the author. Many of you will recognize the name from his writing of "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings." A podcast I listen to on a rather frequent basis featured a professor who spoke for 3 hours about his character as a man and how that provided for him the opportunity to craft the world of The Lord of The Rings. You see, Tolkien was a man of virtue, and one virtue shone through specifically in his life: that of Fortitude. Now, if you have never heard of fortitude or a virtue that is okay. I have found that when working with words and definitions, it is best to go directly to the source of their origination. According to the Cambridge dictionary: virtue is a good moral quality in a person According to the Catechism: Fortitude is the moral virtue that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good. It strengthens the resolve to resist temptations and to overcome obstacles in the moral life. The virtue of fortitude enables one to conquer fear, even fear of death, and to face trials and persecutions. It disposes one even to renounce and sacrifice his life in defense of a just cause. “The Lord is my strength and my song.” “In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” In short, fortitude is the ability to choose what is right even when everything inside of us and outside of us is telling us to run away in fear. It is the ability to stand firm in pursuing good in the face of danger and potential suffering. In our pursuit of personal self excellences, fortitude is a non-negotiable. While western society seemingly collapses in the moral and social pursuit of what is good, it is up to us to be the change. Over time, the idea of personal self excellence has cultivated in me the understanding of what it means to pursue the basics. The basics are the virtues of life. Fortitude, Prudence, Justice and Temperance. These are the basics that have been eradicated from our modern pursuit of cultural relativism and agnosticism. Instead, I have learned that when we choose to continually develop these virtues in our everyday life, we begin to see people who are of good cheer who have overcome the world. We see people of Hope who are committed to the process of developing self excellence in every area of their life. Or as brave Samwise Gamgee states: 'But that's not the way of it with the tales that really mattered, or the ones that stay in the mind. Folk seem to have been just landed in them, usually – their paths were laid that way, as you put it. But I expect they had lots of chances, like us, of turning back, only they didn't. And if they had, we shouldn't know, because they'd have been forgotten.' Instead of being forgotten, make your life a tale that matters, pursue the virtues daily and you will be amazed by the tale that is told when you arrive.
Sean Astin new nothing about 'Lord Of The Rings' when he accepted the role of Samwise Gamgee, and thought he was taking a role in 'The Phantom Tollbooth' (Originally aired November 8th, 2017). Viggo Mortensen, star and director of the film "Falling," once suffered a bout of vertigo and had to hug a wall while filming an intense battle scene in "Lord Of The Rings" (Originally aired January 28th, 2021). Season 18, Episode 20: Brew Session (Lord of the Rings Day 1) Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth hit the digital streets this week and already the Modern format is awash in brews. Morde and Manacymbal are on the case, sorting the wheat from the chaff and also firing off a half dozen decklists of their own. The early winner is The One Ring, a card that looks so intensely powerful that the sky is the limit. Any deck capable of generating sufficient mana to cast The One Ring and deploy the endless cards it draws should slip on Bilbo's ring. After all, why not? Why shouldn't we brew it? Beyond the raw power of the Ring, specific combos are the next big winner. Samwise Gamgee supports a new Cauldron Familiar loop, while Forge Anew gives more options to Hammer (and is especially tricksy with Kaldra Compleat). Orcish Bowmasters has massive hype (largely from EDH) but struggles to find a decent home outside of Morde's crazy Esper Flash. Like our content? Support us on Patreon and join our brewing community! Season 18, Episode 18: Set Review (Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth) With the full set of Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth revealed and ready for action, Cavedan and Manacymbal join forces to rank the best new cards for Modern. The set continues to deliver small role players and long shot build arounds, but few blue chip staples. Stern Lesson is the cheapest version of Remove Soul, but that family of countermagic has no proven track record in constructed. Similarly, Flowering of the White Tree is the most powerful Anthem ever printed, but are Anthems viable in 2023 Modern? Goblins get a new toy in Moria Marauder, and Food strategies will be happy for the combo and value options that Samwise Gamgee provides. Beyond those, we must look to the far green country for long shot brewing targets. Doors of Durin is both explosive and grindy, Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff has echoes of Ledger Shredder, and Phial of Galadriel offers intriguing card draw possibilities. One does not simply register a brew in Modern, but with good fellowship and true companions our quest for a new deck may yet succeed. Happy brewing! Like our content? Celebrating Three Years of Uncertainty: 3rd Anniversary Episode(On May 30th, 2023, Seasons 1 & 2 will be archived) Transcript: I'm Katherine Spearing and welcome to Uncertain, an affiliate podcast of Tears of Eden, a nonprofit supporting survivors of Spiritual Abuse, if you'd like to support this podcast and the work of Tears of Eden, consider giving a donation at TearsofEden.org/support. You can also support the podcast by liking, subscribing, and leaving a review. Here now is a very short episode to acknowledge the third anniversary of Uncertain. This isn't a journey I could have planned. No one had every done this before, as far as I knew, starting a nonprofit focused on caring for survivors of Spiritual Abuse. Spiritual Abuse, that subtle, extremely damaging, often disbelieved form of abuse. Over three years ago, I tried to build a map by attempting to find folks who'd done this work before. My journey through the mountainous terrain of phone calls and Zoom conversations with people across the glob eventually led me to the realization that, as far as I could tell at the time, no one had yet done what Tears of Eden was setting out to do. But this journey of discovery, of exploration, still led me to some pretty amazing humans, doing amazing work. I was having insightful conversations and learning so much about spiritual abuse. If only there was a way to capture all these conversations and share them with the world? Enter the idea for Uncertain, a podcast intended to challenge the church to do better. At first, we focused on asking the church to stop hurting people, stop putting narcissists in the pulpit, stop using christian platitudes to sideline traumatized people. But eventually, I grew weary of speaking to the institutional church. Tears of Eden, the nonprofit of which Uncertain podcast was an affiliate, focused on supporting survivors of the institution. It was never a goal to change the institution. Some folks out there are trying, doing good work, but that isn't, and never has been, the focus of this little organization. So, in season three of Uncertain, we made a slight shift to speaking directly to and equipping survivors, many of whom consider themselves members of the universal church, though often they've had to leave the institution in order to start their healing journey. That's where we are today, focused on providing a safe place for survivors to gather and unpack their stories. Uncertain podcast is the main way people end up finding Tears of Eden. This audio format is our number one ambassador for the organization. It's also our primary resource for providing education and helping folks work through their stories. Some episodes are light hearted, like the episode with comedian Kristina Hart where we discuss the awkwardness of learning how to date as an adult after growing up in purity culture. Some episodes are really difficult, like Kody Purcell's story of abuse at the hands of her youth pastor. Some episodes are highly informative, full of aha moments, like the episode with Dr. Laura Anderson on how our anger is important for our healing journey—definitely not something we heard very often, if ever, in the church. But let's rewind a little, back to the month of May three years ago. I had planned for the first episode to launch the week of Memorial Day, it was cued up and ready to go, but boy was I anxious. As I mentioned at the top of this episode, I could not have planned this journey. I was Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings, taking that step that would take me the furthest away from home I'd ever been. Most of my anxiety those weeks leading up to episode one stemmed from the unknown. In launching the podcast, and a few months later, the nonprofit, I was entering a world where I couldn't predict or prepare for what was coming. I didn't know how the podcast would be received. I didn't know who the first board members of the nonprofit would be. Heck, I was just learning how to podcast and I had no idea how to start a nonprofit. When I think of how anxious I was those first few weeks, how many times I considered bailing, I remember the only thing that motivated me to take the plunge was knowing I'd regret not doing it at all more than I would regret trying and then failing, though I couldn't have told you then what failure looked like. Today, the podcast has been around for three years. 82 episodes and we're in the middle of our forth season. Over 70 artists, authors, experts, and survivors have appeared on Uncertain. It went from a show with 50 to 100 monthly listeners to a show with thousands of monthly listeners. It's a show mental health professionals seek out to learn more about religious trauma and recommend to their clients. It's a show that provides solidarity to survivors when they feel isolated and alone. There have been a lot personal challenges associated with this work. As the team that supports the work of Uncertain and Tears of Eden slowly grows, it's obvious we ourselves are survivors of trauma. Sometimes the work is more than our bodies can handle, and we have to take time to care for our own mental health. I hope an organization supporting survivors of Trauma will always care for the survivors who keep the organization going. Thank you for your patience, compassion, and support, for the times we need to care for and nurture ourselves. This is where I'll sign off, with a big thank you to all of the listeners who have supported this podcast. Thank you for listening, thank you for sharing, thank you for liking and subscribing. Thank you for your financial donations, big and small. Thank you for reaching out to share your stories about how the podcast has impacted you. Happy Three Year Anniversary.
