The Film School Janitors review Amazon Prime's theatrically-released, holiday action picture, RED ONE, and do battle with a jealous dog in the background! The Janitors battle the dog - not the cast of RED ONE!
Welcome to the DMF. Where I try to find out what motivates people behind the scenes in the world of acting and entertainment. Today on the podcast I am talking to podcaster: Eddie Green. We talk movies. As always you can reach me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook with my name Justin Younts. Thank you for listening and sit back and enjoy. I gotta ask you because I read your review of Red One. Not quite my tempo. This statement sets the stage for a deep dive into the world of film reviews and the often inflated budgets that accompany big-name productions. In this video, I share my thoughts on the recent film Red One, starring The Rock, and why I believe it falls short of expectations. With a staggering budget of $250 million, which is more than Oppenheimer, one has to wonder where all that money went. As I discuss the film's lack of originality and the recycled elements from previous projects like Jumanji, I can't help but feel disappointed, especially considering the talent involved. J.K. Simmons, a powerhouse actor, is underutilized, leaving audiences wanting more from his performance. I reflect on the nature of film criticism today, where short reviews garner likes, and I admit that I've fallen prey to this trend myself. However, I strive to provide more in-depth analysis, as I believe every film deserves a thoughtful critique. Join me as I explore the implications of high budgets, the expectations placed on actors, and the overall impact of films like Red One on the industry. I also touch on my experiences with other films this year, including Joker: Folie à Deux and The Substance, highlighting the importance of storytelling and character development. Let's engage in a conversation about what makes a film truly great and why we should be cautious about the hype surrounding big-budget releases. Your thoughts and opinions matter, so don't hesitate to share them in the comments below! 00:00:00 - Introduction 00:00:05 - Discussion on Red One 00:00:58 - Discussion on The Rock 00:01:22 - Discussion on Oppenheimer 00:01:38 - Discussion on Jumanji 00:02:06 - Discussion on J.K. Real Life Devon shared his thoughts on Red One, a Christmas action movie involving a military operation to save Santa, describing it as “a slog and not clever,” though his kid loved Home Alone. Ben has been dealing with his son's walking pneumonia and spent time playing Inertial Drift (check out the free prologue). In the latest episode of Wise_N_Nerdy, hosts Charles, Joe, and Kurt kick things off with the question of the week: “Eggnog – Love it or hate it?” True to his bold opinions, Charles passionately hates on eggnog despite having never tried it, while Joe and Kurt share heartfelt anecdotes about why this creamy holiday beverage holds a special place in their festive traditions. The fates then roll us into the "Daddy, Tell Me a Story" segment, where the trio reminisces about their Christmas experiences this year. Charles doubles down on his mission to be the ultimate gift-giver in his family, Kurt cherishes quality time spent with his wife, and Joe relives the joy of creating memories with extended family. Next up is "What Are You Nerding Out About?" Joe kicks it off with his glowing review of Your Name., which spirals into a lively discussion about holiday movie favorites like Red One, Die Hard, and Love Actually. The mention of Peppermint Junior Mints—a beloved seasonal treat—ignites a secondary debate on favorite holiday snacks. No nerdy chat is complete without a nod to superheroes, so the hosts delve into the new Superman trailer and share their thoughts on Superman & Lois. Fans are further rewarded with speakpipes from Devocite, sparking laughter and camaraderie. The dice then land on the "Parliament of Papas," where Charles, Joe, and Kurt weigh the best superpowers for parents. From being a master of time and space to mind-reading, the hosts explore what powers could best tackle the challenges of fatherhood. In "How Do I…?," the discussion gets practical with tips for surviving a convention with little kids. The hosts share humorous anecdotes and wisdom from their own parenting journeys. Finally, the episode wraps up with hilariously cheesy dad jokes from Devocite, ensuring a laugh-out-loud conclusion. As always, the Wise_N_Nerdy crew invites you to Find your FAMdom and embrace the intersection of fatherhood and fandom.

As J Mo rapidly approaches (or has perhaps already passed?) 3000 films watched all-time on Letterboxd, it felt fitting to kick off a new year with the story of another man who thought he'd hit the 3000 plateau only for it to be taken away from him on a technicality, as we try to whip ourselves back in to game-shape for 2025 by watching a sports comedy that's a little too light on laughs. It's 2004's Mr. 3000, directed by Charles Stone III, and starring Bernie Mac, Angela Bassett, Michael Rispoli, Dondré Whitfield, Paul Sorvino, Chris Noth, Keegan-Michael Key, Dane Cook and Tom Arnold. While the movie never really finds its groove comedically, it's still a charming sports twist on the cocky-hothead-gets-humbled archetype that does a great job of using existing teams, leagues and sports TV shows to make the whole thing feel somewhat real. This is to say nothing of Bernie Mac, who has more than enough charisma to carry this even when the script isn't entirely where it needs to be. Plus: we take a good half-hour off the top of the first show of the new year to countdown our duelling lists of the Top Ten Films of 2024. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, Mr. 3000 is currently free to stream in Canada on Hoopla. Other works discussed in this episode include The Substance, Juror No. 2, Twisters, Will & Harper, Civil War, Longlegs, Hit Man, I Saw The TV Glow, The Wild Robot, The Fall Guy, Conclave, Love Lies Bleeding, La Chimera, Dune: Part Two, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Challengers, Woman of the Hour, Carry-On, Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro, Cuckoo, Red One, Ladder 49 and National Treasure, among countless others. We'll be back next week with a little ADHD-VHS, as Hayley puts her newly-acquired VCR to work watching a movie on tape that is new to her: 1993's The Fugitive, with Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones, that is currently streaming north of the border on Starz. And later in the month, we'll be circling back to our man Bernie Mac as January's canon consideration is 2001's Ocean's Eleven! Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Brim, Kim Adragna and Mr. Greer are back at it again. Apart from all the usual shenanigans, the gang chats about everything pop culture with all the trimmings and they are joined by special guest, Ron ‘Bumblefoot' Thal (Guns ‘N Roses, etc) to discuss his new album ‘Bumblefoot Returns' and what else he's had going on. The cast talks about the Pop Mart surge, the Labubu craze, Webkinz and other collectible fads. The crew also discusses the passing of Jimmy Carter and Linda Lavin, Sylvestor Stallone protecting his property, and how Josh Grobin handles comic con fans. The cast chats about how Frasier almost played Han Solo, Greer's handwriting and Anna Nicole Smith's daughter's interesting request. They discuss a huge alcohol space cloud and Red One was meh. The crew chats about entertainment news, opinions and other cool stuff and things. This week, your friends Count Vardulon and DM wrap up the Xmas season and barrel into the new year with one big budget movie and one small budget movie, neither of which are any good. He knows if you've been naughty, he knows if you've been nice. But according to Red One, Santa doesn't punish you. Are You Just Watching? Episode 156: Red OneMusic by Henry Jackman. For the full show notes please visit areyoujustwatching.com/156Consider helping out our fellow CPC member recover from Hurricane Helene. Tim and Eve engage in a thoughtful discussion about the moral implications of the movie Red One, emphasizing the contrasting themes of belief and skepticism through the lens of a modern Christmas story. They dissect how the characters embody various aspects of morality, particularly focusing on the figure of Santa as a benevolent force and Krampus as a representation of judgment and punishment. Tim points out the film's heavy reliance on adult humor and language, which may detract from its appeal to younger audiences, while Eve underscores the emotional depth found in the character of Jack, illustrating his struggle with fatherhood and personal redemption. The hosts reference scripture, including Romans 2:1-11, to frame their conversation about the consequences of sin and the importance of true repentance. Ultimately, the episode serves as a critique of the film while also prompting listeners to consider the broader themes of faith, morality, and the true meaning of Christmas, encouraging them to reflect on their own beliefs in the context of a world filled with skepticism.Takeaways: The film Red One explores themes of redemption and the consequences of our actions, particularly through the relationship between Jack and his son Dylan. Throughout the discussion, it was emphasized that true redemption requires acknowledging one's mistakes and seeking to improve, as seen in Jack's character arc. The portrayal of Santa Claus in modern culture often detaches from his original Christian roots, leading to a misunderstanding of the holiday's true meaning. In the podcast, the speakers expressed how the naughty and nice list concept is a simplified view of morality that doesn't reflect biblical teachings on sin. The discussion highlighted how skepticism can cloud one's understanding of truth, much like Jack's initial disbelief in Santa and its implications. Ultimately, the episode serves as a reminder to focus on the true meaning of Christmas, which is about Christ's birth and salvation. Ho Ho Ho-bert and Mike are back for another episode of Script Rippers!!! This time the guys cozy up with a warm mug of this year's Christmas Slop, Red One, and learn some important holiday lessons: Santa is real and delivering presents is actually possible if you suck all the magic out of it and make it Amazon, you can undo a lifetime of helping cartels find people in witness protection and abandoning your son by apologizing exactly once, and we could probably all do with a break from The Rock. Can the #1 nice list boys restructure this soulless corporate action romp into something as fun as the one scene with Krampus? Sure, but it's going to require someone to sacrifice themselves so their ghost can pull a Marley Maneuver on Jeff Bezos!

Red One: When Santa Goes Marvel (feat. Pete Wright)Is Amazon's $250 million Christmas blockbuster Red One a fresh take on holiday magic, or a cynical cash grab? Join Matthew and special guest Pete Wright as they unwrap this action-packed holiday film starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Chris Evans. From buff Santas to beach-fighting snowmen, this episode explores how Hollywood's attempt to "Marvelize" Christmas might have missed the spirit of the season.Did Red One forget what makes Christmas special? We dive deep into how the movie's attempt to universalize Santa Claus across all cultures reveals a concerning lack of cultural awareness. The hosts explore why forcing Christmas onto everyone – including those who don't celebrate it – feels particularly tone-deaf in our current social climate. What happens when you mix Marvel-style action with holiday mythology? We examine how J.K. Simmons' surprisingly buff Santa and the movie's fresh take on Krampus reshape traditional Christmas lore. The discussion weighs whether these creative choices enhance or diminish the heart of Christmas storytelling.Other topics covered:The problematic implications of Santa's worldwide surveillance stateHow the film handles redemption through Chris Evans' character arcThe surprising handling of Krampus as a complex character rather than pure villainThe film's uncomfortable relationship with body image and fitnessWhether this expensive holiday spectacle has any chance of becoming an annual tradition**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network.
