"Silence is not spiritual and action is not optional." Oh my, our friend Belinda Bauman is breaking it off as our special guest for the Prey Tell book series. Belinda is an author, speaker, global activist and educator. As she committed herself to empowering women facing injustice in places like the Congo and Iran, the women in her life invited her to see the pain and abuse of women in her own backyard. Alongside Lisa Sharon Harper, Belinda founded the movement Silence is Not Spiritual to help women share their stories and to hold institutions and leaders accountable to change. We believe women and we want to see a world where the imbalance of power ends so that all people are valued in the image of God. This episode will help you share your story, create safe space for other women to be honest, and grow in knowing how to hold people accountable. My conversation this week is with Belinda Bauman. She's the Executive Director of One Million Thumbprints and the author of Brave Souls: Experiencing the Audacious Power of Empathy. Reflection: Belinda says, “embracing our weakness leads to greatness.” Where have you found this to be true in your own life? How might it be true for your child/athlete this season and this year? She also says sports are a great place to practice empathy, to learn other people have perspective other than my own. Who can your child learn from this season? Another quote from the episode is, “Where sports engage the concept of peacemaking, they become the most accessible on ramp to conflict transformation that we have.” Have you seen sports act as a vehicle for healing or reconciliation in a community? If so, how? Belinda says, “Empathetic listening is when we turn the noise down in our own head enough to hear and feel what the person in front of us is saying. Turning our own noise down in our head lets us read the air around the person that's talking to us.” Who are you struggling to show empathy to these days? Is it your child? A coach? A teammate or teammates' family? Have you been quick to write someone off because you haven't stopped to learn the whole story? What might you change to see them for who they truly are, not as the person you've decided they are?
Rebecca Davis and Belinda Bauman join us for the conclusion of our conversation about how empathetic listening and authentic sharing of trauma stories can heal the brain. How do we "rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn" as compassionate witnesses? Why do we avoid engaging with others who have been through difficulty? Empathy requires a lot of work, and it takes time, energy and having the capacity to be humble. Those who have experienced trauma need patience and compassion from listeners as they share their stories if healing is to occur. Our guests give tools and powerful insight into what systemic abuse is, and how to combat the rise of silencing those who have experienced trauma.
"If the world is full of suffering, it is also full of overcoming it." Belinda Bauman believes we have capacity to hold each other's pain. She is a woman who has witnessed the consequences of war, has listened to horrific stories, and has wondered what she is to do with the grief she is holding as a result of bearing witness. A conversation that highlights Belinda's adventurous life path while taking us on the journey of what it means to practice empathy. It was the story of one woman on the other side of the world that changed Belinda's perspective and gave her eyes to see empathy in a new way. In this conversation we hear about their friendship, about Belinda's mandate to tell her friend's story, and how that developed into One Million Thumbprints, an effort to raise awareness about violence against women in war torn countries. Both practical and inspirational, you won't want to miss this beautiful message of incarnational love. From sister to sister, around the world and back, we can practice our empathy muscle by listening, changing our perspectives, and actively peacemaking in our world. No better way to be world changers for good right where we are.

Live discussion with author and advocate, Belinda Bauman and visual artist, Natalie Salminen Rude, on the partnership of entering empathy through works of art. Belinda founded One Million Thumbprints(OMT) which exists to end violence against women and girls in conflict zones. She recently released her book, Brave Souls-Experiencing the Audacious Power of Empathy, to tell the stories of the women she met in Congo. The transformational work of empathy Belinda witnessed among their sisterhood to help each other heal from violent crimes of war against them is what changed Belinda's life. One woman in particular gave Belinda permission to tell the world her story and signed her name with her thumbprint. Belinda realized she needed creatives and artists to help share these stories that were too difficult to hear unless wrapped in the beauty of artistic expression. Natalie, a visual artist who specializes in encaustic, was commissioned to do a painting for OMT and part of the weekend events was her revealing the painting at singer/songwriter Josh Garrel's concert. Josh Garrels has collaborated with OMT in the past and wanted to highlight it at his recent concert in Minneapolis. Prints are available to purchase and go towards the efforts of meeting the needs of women in war zones. https://nataliesalminen.com/the-commissions-project-3/the-commissions-project-prints/ To find out more about OMT and purchase Belinda's book: https://www.ivpress.com/brave-souls https://onemillionthumbprints.org
