At Work as in Heaven - Scott Ryser

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 11, 2022 48:17

The Explore Purpose Podcast inspires you to live a life of meaning and purpose so that you can make a greater impact on the world around you.  Host: Conrad Weaver Guest: Scott Ryser Today's Episode:  At Work as in Heaven About Scott: Scott Ryser grew up going to church every week but never knew God. When Scott finally dedicated his life to Christ in 1995, he knew he was making a decision about his Tuesday, not just his Sunday. Since then, Scott has spent most of his time wrestling with the practical challenges of living out his faith at work every day. When the opportunity to start his company arose, Scott named it Yakabod, meaning "God's glory," pushing into the question, "Is it even possible for a company to give God glory?" And not by doing church stuff at the office, but by doing work in a way that glorifies God. As Scott slowly made progress, the question became: "Is it possible to partner with God at work every day?"  At this point, Scott began to realize the Lord plays by a completely different set of rules, and things just work differently in His Kingdom. This ultimately led to an even bigger question: Can a company look more like the Kingdom of Heaven? Scott is a passionate leader with a head for business, an entrepreneurial spirit, and some basic tech savvy. He's not allowed to write code anymore - but over the past 25+ years he has designed, built and/or managed IT initiatives ranging from small pilot projects to enterprise overhauls using Internet technologies. A "startup guy" at heart, Scott's spent nearly two decades working with a great team to build Yakabod into a premier niche solutions provider. His previous corporate experience also includes management positions with two national system integrators.  Some of his best strategic thinking happens while he's deeply immersed in adventures like thru-hiking, rock climbing, snowboarding or bike touring. (Or maybe that's how he rationalizes the time off.) Scott is an avid reader and a student of business - but is happy to be done with his formal education, having earned an MSEE from The Johns Hopkins University and a BSEE from University of Akron. He serves a number of regional organizations in an advisory or board role, including techfrederick, FITCI, crossedBridges, New Spire Arts, and Woodsboro Bank. Scott was also founder and lead vocalist for modern rock bands milenine and Cry of Mercy for over a decade - and hopes to start another band soon. Motivation Monday - Are you Stuck?

Play Episode Listen Later May 23, 2022 5:10

This is Motivation Monday! A short monologue with inspiration for your week…brought to you by ConjoStudios, and the Explore Purpose Podcast. Are you feeling stuck? I know I have been there. Not knowing how to move forward. I have a tip for this… so stay tuned.  My name is Conrad Weaver, I'm the host of the Explore Purpose Podcast and I'm a documentary film maker. My purpose is to inspire you to live a life that matters! When you discover and live out your purpose, you will have greater impact on the world around you!  I'm so glad you tuned in. Getting stuck is never fun. I remember sliding into a snowy ditch once when I was a teenager… it took a tractor to pull me out… But that's not really the kind of stuck I'm talking about.  Perhaps you're stuck in a job you don't really like. Or your stuck on a problem your trying to solve, or perhaps your stuck in your career and don't really know where to turn next. Or maybe your frustrated that you don't seem to be getting anywhere on your project, that you're not achieving the goal.  I've been to all of these places. And it's not fun.  This I know. It's hard to focus on the future…it's hard to see the possibilities of what can be, while being stuck. It's like you can't see around the problem.  I recently had a conversation with a friend, Jim Whitt who gave me an idea… (you can hear my conversation on episode # 76 of the explore purpose podcast) He was talking about discovering purpose by going through a process.  In the process you discover purpose.  And I think we can use that same idea to get unstuck, or to be able to move forward in order to get to where you want to be…  It's the process.  Yesterday I took a bike ride to begin the process of training for a cross country trip I'm planning for next Summer.  I only rode 13 miles and felt great but exhausted afterward. My mind kept going froward to next year, when I'd be riding 75 to 100 miles every day!  Right now, that seems impossible.  But I know the process of training will get me there. If I only focus on the goal, I'll never get there. But if I focus on the process of training, riding every day, 10-20 miles at a time, I'll eventually be able to ride 75 or 100 miles in a day. It's the process that gets me to the goal.  So, what are you stuck on?  What's the process that you need to do to achieve the goal you have?  Are you only focusing on the goal or on your stuckness ?  The process takes time. I have to be patient with myself while I'm working through the process. The process leads me toward progress.  There's no progress without process.  Don't be so in love with the goal that you neglect the process. I know I need to remind me about this regularly!   I love the idea of completing a film project and releasing it to the world. But if I only focus on the end result I'll never get there. I have to focus on the process of actually making the film.  Work on the process and your success will come.  So that's the motivation for today. What's the process you need to focus on? Go out and do that today.  Do you want a rich and satisfying life? Focus on the process.  Thanks for listening, and be sure to subscribe and catch another episode of the Explore Purpose podcast coming up next week!   Go out and fulfill your dreams!  Thanks for listening, I'll talk with you again soon.  Click here to sign up: www.explorepurpose.com +++++ Visit www.explorepurpose.com to learn more. The discovery of his purpose was the catalyst that launched his career as a writer, speaker, business consultant and film producer. Having personally experienced the transformational power of purpose, he developed a process to help others do the same. That process is the topic of a book, The Transformational Power of Purpose: Finding and Fulfilling Your Purpose in Life, and is available in an online course. As a business consultant Jim developed a purpose-based approach to leadership and organizational development. That approach is the topic of another of his books, Riding for the Brand: The Power of Purposeful Leadership. Jim's background and education have provided him with a unique perspective in the field of personal and organizational development. He grew up working on farms, ranches and feedlots, earned a degree in animal science at Oklahoma State University and spent a dozen years in sales and marketing with two Fortune 500 companies. He views motivation and leadership from three perspectives – scientific, psychological and spiritual – which are summarized in his fundamental principle of human behavior – without a purpose our only motivation is reward and punishment. When Yulia was a little girl growing up in the Soviet Union, she had a dream to explore the world. She dreamed of sailing across the Atlantic and visiting countries like the United States and Canada. But this was only a dream. Travel was restricted in the old Soviet Union, and sailing was not an option. Today, Yulia leads one of Europe's leading law firms, working with international companies like Samsung, Google, and the European Commission, she helps coordinate financial negotiations with her beloved country of Ukraine. And Yulia also leads a winning sailing team representing Ukraine in competitions around Europe. What's it take to be a #GameChanger?  Listen to her compelling story. J. Todd Anderson has been sharing his art with people since he was a young boy drawing pictures of super heroes for his mother’s friends to use on birthday cakes. Art classes in high school were a breeze for him, and as a grownup he continued developing his artistic talents taking film classes in college. He pursued a career in film and eventually connected with the Coen Brothers while they were making Raising Arizona. He was hired to storyboard the film, and found himself using both his art and film skills. Since then, he has storyboarded such films as, The Predator, The Nice Guys, Men in Black I, Paul, The Dictator, The Stepford Wives, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and many others, in addition to every Coen Brother Film since Raising Arizona. His career in the film industry includes directing two feature films, and acting roles in several films. His character was shot and killed dead while running through the snow in Fargo. See him in the original poster. Although he claims to be an alien sent to Earth to observe, he is existentially from Dayton, Ohio. See the the birthplace of aviation. According to J. Todd the best part of storyboarding is “when they send me the script and we have a good time drawing, and then when the movie comes out, the movie’s just as good as everything from the beginning.”   Order - The Official Storyboards from the Big Lebowski!   +++++ Be sure to SUBSCRIBE to the podcast to not miss an episode.
