Click here to send us a topic idea or question for Weekend Wisdom.Question: My 4-year-old foster son moved in 9 months ago. He will likely remain with me permanently, and the application is in progress. I was his 5th foster home when he moved in. There was neglect at his birth parents and abuse in a previous foster home. Last weekend he was being babysat by my sister and brother-in-law. They went to the basement to show him a toy, and he saw a large dog cage they were planning to sell online. He was immediately triggered, ran upstairs, hid under the pillows in a bed, and it took 10 minutes to feel safe. He was obviously placed in a dog cage at some point. How do I support him, talk to him about what happened, and make him feel safe? How should I support him and help him calm his nervous system if he is triggered again? The million dollar question our clients ask when it comes to trauma is: “How do I heal?”  In this episode, Austin, Lynn, and John continue their series, Surviving and Thriving After Trauma, with a deep dive into the key elements needed for healing. Trauma is any experience that overwhelms your ability to cope on your own and can stem from events like divorce, abuse, sexual assault, domestic violence, health crises, betrayal and more. However, it's not just the event itself that is disruptive, but the lingering emotional and mental impact that makes healing difficult. In this episode we cover key elements needed for healing: Ongoing Safety Self-Regulation skills Connecting with safe people Giving voice to your trauma Dismantling false narratives  Engaging with your story in light of God's love and truth Although each person's journey is unique, growth and recovery are possible with the right resources and a supportive community. This episode will guide you through how and why healing from trauma is possible, and provide the insight you need to move towards healing and hope. Dr. Difede explained how trauma forms when we respond to threats that provoke us to fight, flee, or freeze, and described the difference between trauma and PTSD. Despite the challenging nature of a conversation that covers examples of traumatic events, we end this episode on a hopeful note: effective treatments exist for people with PTSD.

Erica is also author of  Body Aware, a book devoted to movement, and Founder of Chicago Dance Therapy where she assists clients in moving their bodies to move their minds. When she found herself in the thick of crisis counseling after the horrific July 4th, 2022 shooting at the parade in downtown Highland Park, IL, it became clear to her that people seeking emotional support, as well as the volunteers, had one thing in common that nobody was addressing- their nervous systems were in utter distress. As a movement therapist, this realization was nothing new. However, in this moment, she found herself wishing she had a body-based emotional first-aid kit to guide these survivors out of their heads and back into their bodies and the idea for The Movement Therapy Deck was born.  Now, her 52 Movement Therapy cards with embodied practices to relieve stress/anxiety, heal from trauma and find emotional balance are available to the public via Target, Amazon and her website. They offer perfect prompts to acknowledge, move through and release emotions and are accessible to everyone no matter age or physical ability.

We're finishing up our For the Love of Wonderful You series intentionally with a deep breath and a gentle word of encouragement. In this episode, even though we are talking about trauma, critical inner voices, and the arduous process of grief, Jen and her guest unwind these topics in the most gentle and loving way.  Kobe Campbell is an award-winning therapist who specializes in helping people process grief and trauma in a way that unearths true empowerment. Hidden beneath the clamor of everyday life, the voices of our inner critic lie in wait to echo our grief. These voices, though silent to others, can roar deafeningly within us — shaping our perceptions, beliefs, and actions. Kobe's suggestions of journal “prompts” help guide our own trauma excavation process, and her gentle but challenging questions further that sometimes painful work, while steering us toward self compassion.  Jen and Kobe touch on:  The understanding that grief can take a lot of time to process; which can ultimately lead to wisdom and true empowerment A working definition of trauma and that trauma is highly personal and contextual How we can feel brave enough to examine the inner critical voice and discern where it's coming from Acknowledging the cultural pressure to live at an unsustainable pace that doesn't allow space or time to heal If you ever needed permission to grieve or drop the unrelenting pace of your life, then this is the invitation. * * * Thought-Provoking Quotes: “I love to tell people that trauma is not what happened to you. It's about how it affected you. And those effects can live in our present, even if the moment is in the past. I help people parse through that in creative ways with poems, quick words, and thoughts from my kitchen right after I'm done with the session.” - Kobe Campbell “I think that many of us have not been given the space to grieve long enough to know what genuine and internal empowerment feels like, and we keep trying to give ourselves that empowerment from the outside. We keep trying to grasp motivation from somewhere.” - Kobe Campbell "Trauma can be acute, meaning it can be a moment, or trauma can be chronic, meaning it could be several moments over time. And I like to give the example that trauma can be a boulder or it could be pebbles. But the reality is–it doesn't matter. There is no big 'T' trauma and little 't' trauma because, at the end of the day, all those pebbles amass to the size of a boulder anyway. It's just being accumulated over time." - Kobe Campbell "The person who holds the wound holds the wisdom. If we lock away that version of us that is deeply wounded and wants to cry for three months, then we're also locking away the wisdom of those situations that we need for our present." - Kobe Campbell "My humanity is good. God created it good. And if I believed that I was good for just existing as I am, how would I treat myself?" - Kobe Campbell Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Why Am I Like This? Learn The 7 Impacts of Trauma and How Trauma Happens In the Mind, Brain, Body, AND Spirit. Matt Finch shares an EPIC and proven three-step process for mind/body/spirit trauma healing totality. This episode of Elevation Recovery comes from a portion of a course and group coaching program called Make Alcohol Moot Again With Mindset Mastery. Unresolved and unhealed trauma (childhood and adult) can make it harder to stop drinking alcohol or administering drugs. Childhood trauma changes the brain and nervous system in ways that make alcohol and other addictions potential subjective resources to regulate the nervous system (and this can lead to addiction). Healing from trauma can take a long time and many individuals haven't been able to recover when using the mind-only approaches or even mind/body approaches. In these cases, trauma healing from a mind, brain, body, and spirit approach can often help. Here are the topics you're going to learn: The Mind-Only Approach to Trauma Healing The Mind/Brain/Body-Informed Perspective The Mind/Brain/Body/Spirit-Informed Perspective The Seven Impacts of Trauma The Three Steps to Healing Trauma in Mind/Brain/Body/Spirit Show Notes Page>>

Recent studies have shown that traditional talk therapy might not be enough to help people recover from trauma.  (eye roll) Great. So, now what??  This episode of How Not to Suck at Divorce features Dr Melissa Kalt. Dr Melissa is a triple board certified physician turned trauma healer. Dr Melissa offers group programs and 1:1 services for people wanting to heal from their trauma. She even met with Andrea in December. Be sure to listen to Andrea's experience and how Dr Melissa was able to pinpoint her pain and help her release it. Something to note is that the trauma lives in our bodies because of the story we told ourselves about the traumatic event, not so much the event itself....food for thought.  (Poor Morgan found this topic to get a little too "woo woo" for her at times...what do you think??) The takeaway here is that if you are suffering, you deserve not to suffer. If trauma healing can help you, why wouldn't you try it? If you've been following my work for awhile, you might have heard me share what I believe to be my purpose in life: To create a more deeply connected world by catalyzing curiosity. When I first met Ajaya Sommers, I almost immediately knew that she has a similar purpose… yet comes from a completely different set of tools and approaches than I do. Ajaya is the founder of a unique somatic discovery process called, Core Embodiment®. For the last 28 years, she has studied how to connect deeply with your body's intelligence to awaken and align with the power of your human potential. My perception is that as a society, we often prioritize thinking with our head, and discount the power of listening to your heart and what your body is telling you. In this episode, you'll learn how to tap into a whole different level of your body's intelligence to find greater alignment with your purpose and natural gifts.
