Hello Effect Pedal listener, this is Wright. Thanks so much for the kind words and support for this podcast. If you’re an Apple Podcasts user and enjoy the show, please leave a 5-star rating, or even a review. Ratings and reviews go a long way in helping new people find and enjoy Effect Pedal too. You hear this from a lot of podcasts, but it’s really true. And if you’re not an Apple Podcasts user, you’re just as awesome. You can still tell a friend about Effect Pedal with your podcast app’s share button. So thanks again. And now, on with the show. (Transition sound) Most guitar players will tell you, if you want to get better, then you have to get with other musicians and play. Often, that turns into starting a band, or at least joining one. As the 2000s were getting underway, in the basement of my good friend Tony’s condominium, he and I started a band. We had jammed together once in his college apartment a few years prior, during our senior year, and we always talked about doing more of it. Perhaps we were having a quarter-life crisis, but we finally decided to get serious and play. (Well, somewhat serious, as we were always a couple of goofs.) Tony on drums, me on guitar, our friends Diego on lead guitar and Okem on bass, and we were officially a band.   While we were deciding on a name, I decided that I wanted to upgrade my guitar rig. At the time, I owned a wah pedal (see Episode 3 for more on that), a Boss distortion pedal (Episode 1), and a Korg ToneWorks AX100G multi-effect pedal. The ToneWorks is a fun little unit but I wanted something more. Then I got an idea - what if I combined all three of those? Like Voltron! Enter the Boss GT-3 Guitar Effects Processor. (Theme song sound) My name is Wright Seneres and this is Effect Pedal. This is a podcast and art project dedicated to guitar effect pedals. In the universe, there are countless numbers of these pedals, creating an infinite number of sounds, and opening up worlds of possibilities for guitar players.   The GT-3 combines 32 Boss effects, including 12 distortions and overdrives, as well as choruses and flangers, into one unit with dozens and dozens of presets. Notably, it includes something Boss’s parent company Roland calls a “Composite Object Sound Modeling” preamp, which emulates a number of famous guitar amplifiers in history. It also has a great variety of simulations of different pickups, speaker cabinets and guitar synthesizers. It was first released in 1998 as a low-cost alternative to the GT-5, and has since been discontinued and replaced by the GT-6 and other GT models. Like other Boss stompboxes, it’s constructed with a rugged metal case that would do well at a monster truck rally if it had wheels. (Monster truck sounds) It could win a demolition derby if you could drive it. (Demolition derby sounds) It’s as solid now as the day I got it.    I got my GT-3 one evening after a tuna fishing trip Tony and his wife Laura took me on. I didn’t catch anything on the tuna boat, but I reeled in this beast of a multi-effect pedal on eBay. It’s a pleasing deep blue color with yellow Cheez Whiz color letters. It has seven foot switches, an expression pedal, a scroll wheel, an LED display, and twenty buttons. Twenty buttons! The seller lived a few miles from me, so I picked it up in person and raced home to plug it in. It was like that movie Pleasantville, when the picture goes from black and white to color.  (Harp sound) The ever-large palette of sounds that the GT-3 provided was just what I needed as our little band was beginning, which we called the Modes. I could do more things at once with the GT-3, customizing the footswitches for individual parts of songs. One of the songs we covered in that band was “Lucky” by Radiohead, and with the GT-3, I could get a nice delay effect for the intro, which is actually played where the strings are attached to the headstock: footswitch one.  ("Lucky" intro sound)...

How I Make Music
#057 Afro-Sax Freakout by John Bartmann

How I Make Music

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2020 18:06

The piece of music in this week's episode is called Afro-Sax Freakout. It’s an upbeat, exciting Afrobeat track which is suitable for depictions of action, exotic locations and energetic activity. It uses a combination of tenor saxophone, overdriven keyboards, funk-influenced electric guitar and high-energy drumming in the style of Tony Allen to convey a sense of freedom and excitement. Let’s break it down!IN THIS EPISODEHow is this Afrobeat?01:19 Instrument: Drum rhythmThe drum kit and the saxophone own the sound of Afrobeat, a powerful dance music genre pioneered by Nigerian artists such as Fela Kuti and Tony Allen in the 1970s and today played by bands like Vampire Weekend. This piece uses a typical Afrobeat double snare hit, cowbell and a 140BPM tempo. The reference track for this composition was Secret Agent by Tony Allen, who was originally the drummer for Fela Kuti before branching out on his own after Fela’s death in 1997. Tony Allen himself died just 3 weeks before this podcast was released. 04:02 Instrument: SaxophoneNothing quite like a sax to get the room moving. Afrobeat leans towards jazz music by allowing sax players to improvise over a core dance groove. Recordings can sometimes go on for 20 minutes! The sax in this piece was recorded by Duncan Johnson, a familiar face on the Cape Town jazz circuit. Some of his licks are “way out”, and really pay tribute to how free an afrobeat solo can be. 05:51 Instrument: Funk guitar and overdriven keyboardI tried to capture a certain keyboard sound by making it sound like it had been played through an overdriven guitar amp. The funk guitar uses the wah pedal of my Boss GT-6. There’s a plucky guitar solo later in the track that also captures the extreme rhythmic staccato which is used in this type of music. 07:14 Method: Repetition with variationThe track is a riff-based piece which doesn’t have a B-part. In groove music, repetition is your friend. But you need to create variation. I do so in this piece by allowing the various instruments to all take a round of solos each, and by creating unusual moments for parts to begin and end.09:03 Method: ‘Backbreaker’ interludeLong sections of soundtrack music can’t be too repetitive. Music editors often just duplicate a length of background sound to fill the dialogue time, but it’s horrible on the ears on anyone actually listening to the music in the background! Break long, repetitive compositions in two by including a few bars of filler time. It can be a drum solo, a jazz lick or anything that causes the rhythm to be momentarily suspended before resuming.11:04 Method: ‘Wrong’ notesAfrobeat is rooted in jazz, which has a more open and inclusive view of chromaticism than Western classical music. There’s a clear ‘wrong’ note in Fela Kuti’s ‘Water Get No Enemy’, which sounds fantastic, bold and subversive. I particularly like the way some of the guitar and sax licks in this piece use the ‘wrong’ notes. That’s jazz!DOWNLOAD & USE THIS MUSIC * Download ‘Afro-Sax Freakout’ by John Bartmann https://gum.co/MxRHU * Search music by John Bartmann https://johnbartmann.com/musicSHOW NOTES * Additional music: Tony Allen - ‘Secret Agent’, Fela Kuti - ‘Water No Get Enemy’, Vampire Weekend ‘Mansard Roof’ * Saxophonist Duncan Johnson http://www.duncan-johnson.com/about-duncan/ * Sign up for the monthly mailout and receive new production music albums. The soundtrack in this week's episode is called Uptown Fatness. It’s an energetic, uplifting poppy funk track suitable for upbeat, happy and exciting moments, and is loosely based on the in-your-face slam-dunk dance beats of songs like Uptown Funk. It’s also a highly persuasive sound found in much advertising and corporate communication aimed at younger people. In this episode: Pick a time to imitate. This track is early 80s, so it blends funk and the new sound of samplers. The bass sounds fake. That’s OK. So do the drums, so they match. Fake it up! Nope, you don’t need the latest gear. With a new Ibanez signature model, a backup axe, and a plug-and-play "fly rig", the rock heroine travels light to create the heavy tones on her solo debut, Controlled Chaos. Article & photos: http://bit.ly/NitaStraussRR  Don't Miss a Rundown: http://bit.ly/RIgRundownENL  Furious, focused, and expansive, the playing of Nita Strauss is the stuff emerging-rock-guitar legends are made of. During soundcheck at Nashville’s Basement East, PG’s John Bohlinger checked in with Strauss, who was on a break from her regular gig with Alice Cooper, touring in support of her debut solo album, Controlled Chaos. Strauss wrote, produced, engineered, and recorded all the guitar and bass parts on the album, which, in testament to her abilities and her fan base, was made via a Kickstarter campaign that exceeded its $20,000 goal by $145,755. As she rips for our cameras, Strauss, the first woman to have an Ibanez signature model—which debuted at Winter NAMM 2018—talks about her JIVA10 and her backup S6570Q, and puts her fly rig, a Boss GT-100, though her core settings. Check out how Strauss shows off the JIVA10’s radical tuning stability at the 15-minute mark! And yes, she is a descendent of the Austrian composer Johann Strauss.
