Great balls of fire! On this VERY Hot Jazz Network Podcast, host George Cole talks with international Rockabilly star, Darrel Higham. Endorsed by Gretsch Guitars and Peavey Amps, Darrel Higham has worked with Jeff Beck, Robert Plant, Jools Holland, Imelda May, Billy Lee Riley, Rocky Burnett, and more. Listen to George and Darrel wind their way through the intersecting paths of musical interests and discuss guitars, great guitarists, and the music that makes them "tick"!ABOUT Darrel Higham: Born in Bedford, England in 1970, Higham grew up listening to the music of Elvis Presley and Eddie Cochran. Through the influence of these artists, Higham took up the guitar in his early teens and joined his first band whilst still at school. In 1992 he spent 6 months living in the USA; touring and recording with Eddie Cochran's original backing band, The Kelly Four. His first solo album was released in 1995 on Nervous Records, entitled Mobile Corrosion. Higham played lead guitar in the West End production of Elvis: The Musical in 1996. He co-wrote the first biography on his musical hero, Eddie Cochran for Mainstream Publishing in 2000. Along with solo albums and records released with his Rockabilly band, The Enforcers, throughout the 90s and 00s, Higham also played lead guitar and produced many other artists. He co-owns Embassy Studio in Hampshire and oversees a great many sessions there. In 2007, Higham started work with Stray Cats drummer, Slim Jim Phantom. Together they recorded 2 albums and toured Europe, even making an appearance on BBC's Later With Jools in 2012. In 2011 he shared the lead vocal duties with Imelda May on the Jeff Beck DVD and subsequent CD, A Rock 'n' Roll Party. He has played guitar for Robert Plant, Jools Holland, Imelda May, Sharon Shannon, Shakin' Stevens, Jeff Beck, Billy Lee Riley, Rocky Burnette, Bono, Paul McCartney, to name but a few. Darrel is endorsed by Gretsch guitars, Peavey amplifiers and TV Jones pick-ups. Darrel also helped design The Rockingham semi-acoustic guitar for Peavey.LINKSWebsite: darrelhigham.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/people/Darrel-Higham/100044555554168/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/darrelhighammusic/X (formerly Twitter): https://x.com/DCHighamPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/darrelhighammusicStrings Darrel Higham Rockabilly Signature Strings newtonestrings.com Latest Recording: Darrel Higham, a Tribute to Gene Vincent. https://www.musicking.co.uk/collections/foot-tapping-records/products/darrel-higham-a-tribute-to-gene-vincent-cd A Superb salute to the great Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps. Florida native McCoy Gibbs made the move to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of 18 to pursue a Music Business degree at Belmont University.  He not only earned that degree, but also made lifelong connections and friendships while falling in love with the city, energy, and opportunity that is Nashville.  The crazy part is that Gibbs didn't really learn to play drums until his college years.  For this natural musician, drums and rhythm came naturally and he found his groove, literally. After college, Gibbs emerged as a drummer while playing with pop/rock band Hot Celle Rae.  He then went on to become an independent drummer to soak in all the music he could.  During this time he met tons of musicians, bands and artists, cut his teeth on the grind of Broadway bars and “honky tonks,” and jumped in a van for a random show in Montana.  He loved every minute of it. In 2013, his hard work paid off when Gibbs successfully auditioned for CMA-nominated Duo of the Year, Love and Theft, and hit the road for the busiest year of his life thus far.  It hasn't slowed down for him since.  From touring, live TV performances, music videos and award shows, Gibbs has kept himself quite busy. Gibbs is currently playing with 2017 CMA New Artist of the Year nominee Lauren Alaina, and continues to find other ways to fill in the occasional off day with sessions, shows, and housework.  If there is an example of hard work, passion, and preparation paying off, McCoy Gibbs is that example.   Some Things That Came Up:  -2:45 Tall drummers  -4:15 Playing the Opry -5:00 Imposter Syndrome?  -5:20 Musical family. The latest (and apparently last) studio album from the LA legends is a worthy addition to their catalog. It's filled with everything we've come to love from the band since their debut almost forty years ago. John and Exene's autobiographical lyrics, Billy Zoom's unmistakable tempo drenched Gretsch and DJ's Bonebrake's splashy hi-hat all shine across ten bangers that speed by at a brisk 29 minutes. We've dedicated more episodes to X than to any other band (six including the to great Knitter's first LP) and this won't be the last.     Recommended Listening   X on the HHPP:   EP3: "Wild Gift” https://huntsmanhill.com/2016/11/23/64/   EP86: “Los Angeles” https://huntsmanhill.com/2019/01/22/ep86-x-los-angeles/   EP121: “Alphabetland” https://huntsmanhill.com/2020/05/03/ep121-x-alphabetland-soundtrack-to-the-apocalypse-vol-7/   EP180: “Under the Big Black Sun” https://huntsmanhill.com/2022/06/26/ep180-x-under-the-big-black-sun/   EP218: The Knitters “Poor Little Critter on the Road” https://huntsmanhill.com/2023/04/16/ep218-the-knitters-poor-little-critter-on-the-road/   EP256: “More Fun in the New World”  https://huntsmanhill.com/2024/02/18/ep256-x-more-fun-in-the-new-world/   HHPP Playlist Track: “Ruby Church”  https://open.spotify.com/track/3oVfMZgksGM7G3himHLAiV?si=bbe8ae017a3d4712   HHPP Spotify Playlist:  https://open.spotify.com/user/1298220429/playlist/4gy1wWwypkoFS2lUztvZ44?si=waSq07DBQlq3x9G1_nK0pg   Contact us at:  huntsmanhillpodcast@gmail.com   Our Music manhuntsman:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/7tFBWn0UFkdOEMf67TRD6W?si=vzllkbDwSEmfZFlj02GLRw Academy O.C:  https://academyoc.bandcamp.com/album/academy-o-c   Omertà 68:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/6dfiCa0qTlbPQUrqtIkStS?si=6SCjNtXbSO2xRBDuBKJelQ MidCityThree:  https://open.spotify.com/artist/2LW7wWSHd9bi3n3Q5N8i35?si=4UnUthYNR4K9FMv2dqFOVw   huntsmanhill.com instagram.com/huntsmanhill https://twitter.com/HuntsmanHill

Born and raised in Arkansas, Evan grew up playing drums at his dads church in Fort Smith. He was the kid that would sit behind the drummer during church and soak in every detail and nuance. Once church let out, he'd jump up on the kit and play, until the next church service started a few hours later. Evan got his first drum set at the age of 8 and began serenading his whole family and neighborhood with punk rock beats and the sounds of the radio. After touring the country with his band The Exception, Evan decided it was time to move to Nashville, TN and attend Middle Tennessee State under the direction of Lalo Davila and Tom Giampietro. It was in college where Evan honed his craft and wanted to become a studio musician. Years later and having played on multiple #1 songs on the radio, Evan is now an in demand studio drummer. It was their first solo headline tour since 2018, and they brought along loads of new noisemakers for the occasion. Frontman Patrick Stump has moved on from his trademark Gretsch electrics, guitarist Joe Trohman scored an Explorer that may or may not remind us of a certain purple McDonald's character, and Pete Wentz packs some basses that bring both ice and fire to the gig. Crosses was formed by cofounding members Lopez and bassist Chuck Doom in the late 2000s before recruiting Chino Moreno to front the dark dance party. The trio released three EPs and a self-titled debut album between 2011 and 2014 before going on hiatus in 2015. For almost 15 years, the nucleus of Shawn Lopez and Chino Moreno have creatively layered and disguised guitar and synth combining new wave, electronica, goth rock, industrial, and ambient pop producing a soundtrack to neo-noir readaptation of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly that subs the old west and gunplay with after-hours Miami and foreplay.“When we started Crosses, I was just learning to play piano. I think back then I wanted to make synthy-sounding songs, but I didn't know how to play synths so I was like, ‘how can I get my guitar to sound like a synth,' so I just incorporated pedals, lap steel, and anything to make my guitar unrecognizable,” admits Lopez.Prior to working with Moreno in Crosses, Lopez cofounded Far—an influential post-hardcore 1990s contemporary of the Deftones in Sacramento—and has tallied a variety of producer credits collaborating with Chon, Rob Zombie, Lupe Fiasco, Dead Sara, Whitechapel, and others. That sort of versatility is evident when experiencing Crosses with a pair of headphones or seeing them perform onstage. Throughout the band's run, Lopez has interplayed and interwoven guitar and synths countering brooding against beauty and gentle versus tense. When Crosses was revitalized in 2022 with fresh material—and the departure of bassist Chuck Doom—the remaining duo doubled down on their digital-based dynamism featuring even more synths, keys, and electronic experimentation where he would even sample his guitar through his keys. “Since those first songs, I've really learned how to play piano and keyboards and by better understanding that new instrument, at times, I've become more inspired by synths over guitar,” recalls Lopez. But no matter how many synths or keyboards get put to tape, you'll still see Lopez onstage with a guitar draped over his shoulder.“I do prefer to play guitar live because it's more fun and I can run around. I am always chasing sounds no matter the instrument it takes to get there. My sound is growing because I'm always learning. I think if you stop learning you stop progressing. but guitar will always be home,” states Lopez.Prior to Crosses' sold-out show at Nashville's Marathon Music Works, Lopez welcomed PG's Perry Bean onstage to dissect his setup. The lone instrumentalist showed off six stellar guitars, broke down the heavy lifting his FM9 endures for Crosses' sets, introduced a peculiar pedal he can't live without, and demonstrated a Gretsch that sounds like an angry orca. With the recent announcement of the limited edition boygenius signature Broadkaster Jr. by Gretsch—which sold out, by the way—another entry has been added to the relatively short list of women, or, in this case, groups of women with signature guitars.  It's a list that has expanded in the past decade or so, and it includes Yvette Young, Chrissie Hynde, Emily Wolf, H.E.R., Susanna Hoffs, Lari Basilio, Bonnie Raitt, Nancy Wilson, and Courtney Love. And, of course, what is perhaps the most unique signature model named for a woman–the Ernie Ball Music Man St. Vincent.  Even though the list of women with signature guitars has grown over the years, I think there's still a lot of opportunity for brands to honor some of today's most exciting, up-and-coming guitarists who just happen to be women.  Let's talk about some women who I think should get a signature guitar. I based this list mostly on vibes. Okay, getting serious, yes, this list is largely artists of whom I'm a personal fan. But I also thought about musicians who are gaining popularity, brands that don't presently have a lot of signature models, period, guitar models that have been done to death—so I won't be suggesting Strats of Teles—and, finally, I tried to hit a few different genres. But, me being me, most of these artists fall fairly squarely within quote unquote indie rock genre. Support Get Offset by... The philosophy behind kintsugi is that broken objects are not worthless and their brokenness can be seen as a part of their history and beauty. In Hawaiian culture, mana is a sacred term that refers to spiritual energy and strength. It can be present in both people and objects. Hawaiians believe that mana can be gained or lost through actions. They also believe that mana is both internal and external.

One of the many reasons of how Pearl Jam has developed such a large following within their fanbase traveling near and far to their shows is that every single show is going to offer you something completely different than their last. Nearly everyone has a wish list of songs that they think they'll never hear live, but keep hope alive that some day they will finally be in the building on the night they play one. Those rarities are cherished by this community, and if you happen to be at the right show at the right time, you may see multiple rare tracks that they may not play on the rest of the tour. Charlottesville 2013 was that kind of show. With 3 dates left before the end of the east coast run that year, the band unloaded on songs from all different eras that automatically made this one of the most talked about shows of the year. The sets in 2013 were starting to grow longer without the appearance of an opener. Most shows pushed the 3-hour mark and delved into well beyond 30 songs played for each individual night. Charlottesville had a total of 35 songs that were played, and among the big talking points were songs like In My Tree, Grievance, Glorified G, Big Wave, Sad and the first appearance of Thumbing My Way since 2006. Those six performances alone created enough talking points for this to be recognized perhaps under the "instant classic" moniker. But there are many discussions to be had in this episode that could spell some of those pre-conceived notions. With 19 songs bunched in to a main set that lasted an hour and 25 minutes, there will be a lot of discussion here on how some of the flow and pacing felt a little bit off when attempting this enormous task. We'll discuss how that compares to the more recent era where there are less songs played, but more time to give each one it's moment to shine in a more methodical way. We'll hear from you guys on what type of Pearl Jam shows that you prefer to see, and we'll get three excellent segments from the Gear Guru this week - Stone's fingerpicking on Release, Mike using a monstrous Gretsch guitar on Glorified G, and he'll dig into why this version of Whipping desperately needed to be aborted towards the end.
