En: Marta, with her ever-present kindness, was the first to offer help. En: In the tourist's eyes, a new light could be seen. As if he had understood something beyond words, and this, in the end, was all that mattered. En: Cheers echoed through the square when the castell was completed. The satisfaction of the experience on their faces, the shared effort, the complicity. En: And as important to Jordi, to Marta, to Laia, was this simple lesson: that experiences, more than words, have the power to intertwine stories and people. En: That day, Barcelona became a little bigger, incorporating this tourist into the history woven on every street, in every square, in every castell. O., Stroganova, T. A. Abstract: The spectral formant structure and periodicity pitch are the major features that determine the identity of vowels and the characteristics of the speaker. However, very little is known about how the processing of these features in the auditory cortex changes during development. To address this question, we independently manipulated the periodicity and formant structure of vowels while measuring auditory cortex responses using MEG in children aged 7-12 years and adults. We analyzed the sustained negative shift of source current associated with these vowel properties, which was present in the auditory cortex in both age groups despite differences in the transient components of the auditory response. In adults, the sustained activation associated with formant structure was lateralized to the left hemisphere early in the auditory processing stream requiring neither attention nor semantic mapping. This lateralization was not yet established in children, in whom the right hemisphere contribution to formant processing was strong and decreased during or after puberty. In contrast to the formant structure, periodicity was associated with a greater response in the right hemisphere in both children and adults. These findings suggest that left-lateralization for the automatic processing of vowel formant structure emerges relatively late in ontogenesis and pose a serious challenge to current theories of hemispheric specialization for speech processing. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.26.513920v1?rss=1 Authors: Carney, L. H., Cameron, D. A., Kinast, K. B., Feld, C. E., Schwarz, D. M., Leong, U.-C., McDonough, J. M. Abstract: In the response of the healthy ear to a harmonic sound, auditory-nerve rate functions fluctuate at the fundamental frequency, f0. The amplitude of these fluctuations varies along the tonotopic axis. Neural fluctuation (NF) amplitudes encode spectral peaks, including formant frequencies of vowels, because responses of inner-hair-cells (IHCs) tuned near spectral peaks are captured (or dominated) by a single harmonic, resulting in lower fluctuation amplitudes than responses of IHCs tuned between spectral peaks. This NF code is robust across a wide range of sound levels and in background noise. The NF profile is converted into a rate-place representation in the auditory midbrain, wherein neurons are sensitive to low-frequency fluctuations. The NF code is vulnerable to sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) because capture depends upon saturation of IHCs, and thus the interaction of cochlear gain with IHC transduction. In this study, formant-frequency discrimination limens (DLFFs) were estimated for listeners with normal hearing or mild to moderate SNHL. The difficulty of the task was modulated by varying formant bandwidth to modulate the contrast in the NF profile. The formants were either aligned with harmonic frequencies or placed between harmonics. Formant frequencies were 600 and 2000 Hz, in the range of first and second formants of several vowels. Results were compared to predictions from model auditory-nerve (AN) and inferior colliculus (IC) neurons, with listeners audiograms used to individualize the AN model. Correlations between DLFFs, audiometric thresholds near the formant frequencies, age, and scores on the Quick speech-in-noise test are reported. SNHL had a strong effect on DLFF for the second formant frequency (F2), but relatively small effect on DLFF for the first formant. The IC model provided good predictions of elevated listener thresholds to F2 as a function of SNHL. Copy rights belong to original authors. Vowel and formant representation in human auditory speech cortex

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.13.507547v1?rss=1 Authors: Oganian, Y., Bhaya-Grossman, I., Johnson, K., Chang, E. F. Abstract: Vowel sounds are a fundamental component of human speech across all languages. Vowels are cued acoustically by formants, the resonance frequencies determined by the shape of the vocal tract during speaking. An outstanding question in neurolinguistics is how the human brain processes vowel formants during speech perception. We used high-density intracranial recordings from the human speech cortex on the superior temporal gyrus (STG) while participants listened to natural continuous speech to address this question. We derived two-dimensional receptive fields based on the first and second formants to characterize tuning to vowel sounds. We found that neural activity at single STG sites was highly selective for particular zones in the formant space. Furthermore, this formant tuning shifted dynamically to adjust for speaker-specific spectral context. Despite this formant selectivity, local cortical responses were not sufficient to reliably discriminate between vowel categories. Instead, vowel category representations could be accurately decoded when using the entire population of formant encoding electrodes. Together, our results reveal that vowels are locally encoded in STG with complex acoustic tuning in two-dimensional formant space. As a population code this gives rise to phonological vowel perception. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by PaperPlayer

Internationally renowned leading voice teacher John Henny joins host Alexa Terry on this episode of Singing Teachers Talk. Hear all about John's Covid scare and the brain fog that comes along with it. Join the discussion on acoustics, passive income, and find out what ‘the teaching triangle' actually is. Find all the referenced talking points under the ‘Show Resources' section. KEY TAKEAWAYS A singing teacher needs to understand how the vocal cords work. You have to develop the ability to know how to manage the healthy tug-of-war between tensing and stretching muscles. If you understand the shifts in the soundwaves and the resonance we create, then it explains why you get a vocal break and the subtleties of the vowel sounds. Most of the issues a singer has with acoustics are to do with throat resonation. Try using the ‘uuuhhh' sound to drop the larynx. The pitch you're hearing is made up of many different pitches. Your vocal tract is a filter. The original pitches don't change, it's but the filter that changes it. Formant essentially means boost. ‘You' and ‘me' are two things we sing about a lot but they're hard to do, that's why you often hear singers say ‘may' instead of ‘me' and distort the vowel to an unrecognisable form. The soundtrack in this week's episode is called Uptown Fatness. It’s an energetic, uplifting poppy funk track suitable for upbeat, happy and exciting moments, and is loosely based on the in-your-face slam-dunk dance beats of songs like Uptown Funk. It’s also a highly persuasive sound found in much advertising and corporate communication aimed at younger people. In this episode: Pick a time to imitate. This track is early 80s, so it blends funk and the new sound of samplers. The bass sounds fake. That’s OK. So do the drums, so they match. Fake it up! Nope, you don’t need the latest gear. Guitar goes through my Boss GT-6, a really old multi-fx pedal The feeling you have towards your music comes through Book a studio or rehearsal space for half a day and record your own samples. To know where you’re going, you have to have an understanding of – and an appreciation for – where you’ve been.  Publisher and activist Marcus Garvey said, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” And Michael Crichton, the bestselling author of Jurassic Park and Westworld, said, “If you don’t know history, then you don’t know anything. You are a leaf that doesn’t know it is part of a tree.” Why are our two favorite quotes about history also about trees? Who knows. But these quotes encapsulate what we’re going to be discussing on today’s episode: a glimpse back at a little-known but hugely important event in this nation’s history and the role that little-old Maryland played in that event. Our guest, Chris Formant, is a businessman by trade – a former top executive of a multi-billion-dollar global business and now the CEO of a technology company – but more to the point for this episode, he’s the author of a riveting new book called Saving Washington: The Forgotten Story of the Maryland 400 and the Battle of Brooklyn. It’s a piece of historical fiction; all of the events in the book actually happened, but they are told through the eyes of two fictional characters who give life to an event that most people know little or nothing about. And we can really learn a lot about history, and the present, through their eyes. To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit blionline.org/blog. On a marshy Brooklyn battlefield on August 27, 1776, four hundred men from Baltimore, Maryland assembled to do battle against a vastly superior British army. Seemingly overnight, these young soldiers had matured from naïve teenagers to perhaps the most important, yet most forgotten, citizen soldiers in all of American history. Chris Formant’s novel “Saving Washington: The Forgotten Story of the Maryland 400 and The Battle of Brooklyn” blends real-life historical figures and events with richly developed fictional characters in a multi-dimensional world of intrigue, romance, comradeship, and sacrifice, transporting us two-and-a-half centuries back in time to the bustling streets of Baltimore and the bloody, smoke-filled carnage of battle in Brooklyn.
