This time, Chris Shiflett sits down with fellow west coaster Craig Ross, who calls in from Madrid equipped with a lawsuit-era Ibanez 2393. The two buddies kick things off commiserating over an increasingly common tragedy for guitarists: losing precious gear in natural disasters. The takeaway? Don't leave your gear in storage! Take it on the road! Ross started out in the Los Angeles band Broken Homes, influenced by Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, and the Beatles, but his big break came when he auditioned for Lenny Kravitz. Kravitz phoned him up the next day to tell him to be at rehearsal that evening. In 1993, they cut one of their biggest hits ever, “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” Ross explains that it came together from a loose, improvisatory jam in the studio—testament to the magic that can be found off-leash during studio time. Ross recalls his rig for recording the solo, which consisted of just two items: Kravitz's goldtop Les Paul and a tiny Gibson combo. (No fuzz or drive pedals, sorry Chris.) As Ross remembers, he was going for a Cream-era Clapton sound with the solo, which jumps between pentatonic and pentatonic major scales. Tune in to learn how he frets and plays the song's blistering lead bits, plus learn about what amps Ross is leaning on these days. They cover their speedy 7-strings from Jackson and Ibanez, explain why they landed on their preferred DiMarzio and Fishman pickups, and reveal all the ways the Neural DSP Quad Cortex has condensed, streamlined, and optimized the duo's stage attack. Knocked Loose Drum Rundown: https://youtu.be/3WOPb983PssFull Rig Info: https://www.premierguitar.com/videos/rig-rundown/knocked-loose-2024If hell had a guitar tone, it'd be what Knocked Loose's Isaac Hale and Nicko Calderon conjure up from their Ibanez 7-string beasts. The band's mission since day one has been to pummel listeners with the most-extreme form of hardcore music. The past decade they've throttled through all limits making each break down, each riff, each scream, and each performance outdone by the next. A more recent (and seemingly) conflicting goal has been to infect the mainstream with their brutality. Their brand-new third album, You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To paired them with pop producer Drew Fulk (Kevin Gates, NLE Choppa, Disturbed, Lil Wayne), the last two years they've played Coachella and Bonnaroo, in 2022 they partnered with hip-hop duo $uicideboy$ for a sold-out tour, and they were just announced as direct support for Slipknot's 25th anniversary tour. Both goals are being accomplished as their sound has never been more punishing or popular. Before Knocked Loose's sold-out show at Nashville's Marathon Music Works, guitarists Isaac Hale and Nick Calderon invited PG's Perry Bean onstage for a fresh conversation about their updated mercenary squad. During our time with the Hale and Calderon, we learn about their custom 7-string Ibanez doom brooms, Hale explains moving on from tube amps and pedalboards to Quad Cortex units and MIDI switching, and Calderon details finding his place in the band and adjusting to an extra low-B string. Detroit Tigers offense exploded for 11 runs en route to beating the Cleveland Guardians 11-7 in the second game of the three game series at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Andy Ibanez smashed two home runs as part of a four hit night in total while tallying 4 RBI. Ryan Vilade played his first ever game in a Tigers' uniform after being called up from Triple A Toledo and delivered a pair of clutch singles with one scoring two Tigers and the other plating a run. Matt Vierling and Wenceel Perez also both turned in multi-hit games as the Tigers offense helped stop a 4-game losing skid. Tigers starter Kenta Maeda got roughed up for seven runs in just two innings pitched, however the Tigers' bullpen was tremendous pitching 7 innings of shutout baseball. Javy Baez played a tremendous shortstop all night making several key defensive plays. With the win, the Tigers have a chance at taking the series tomorrow afternoon against the Cleveland Guardians. Among the first original designs Ibanez made after the famed Gibson lawsuit was the Musician Series. These were guitar re-thought from the ground up. They are still considered sturdy workhorses, and they mark a direction that would set Ibanez on the path to being one of the world's leading guitar makers. This MC200 got a rare ‘double buy' from us. With some rumors swirling about Pearl Jam playing Australia this year for the first time since 2014, we thought now would be as good of a time as any to get into a show from down under. 2006 was the last time they played Australia without the help of the Big Day Out festival. For Melbourne, they were treated to three great shows in the same fashion that they had done in previous years, such as 1995 and 1998. While the performances are great from this show, there is one thing that will make this one go down in the annals of Pearl Jam history, and that is... Ed's butt cheeks. Yes, you read that right. Three nights in Melbourne means that shenanigans are bound to be had both after the shows and on the off day, which Ed had partaken in. During his escapades, he was informed of a traditional Australian drinking game in which you take a 50 cent coin, wedge it between your butt cheeks and then try and walk with it over to a cup and see if you can drop it in. In the spirit of a night three, Ed plays the game on stage to pretty hilarious results. Also, Stone takes a crack (ha....) at it as well. Aside from that, we have some great performances at this show. We'll end up talking about Jeff a lot who is prominent in the mix on such songs like Hail, Hail and Even Flow, and Javier's segments this week will focus heavily on the Telecaster sound during World Wide Suicide and Save You, as well as Mike's Ibanez (not Gibson) Flying V on Present Tense.
