Re-released Episode- Military Life Community Connectors EXPLAINED PART 1 Maybe you have heard about Military Life Community Connectors, or maybe you want to know more about them. This episode is all about who they are, what they do, and why I felt there was a need for the Military Life Community Connector Program. No one quite gets you like a fellow Defence Partner, but finding and connecting with other partners can be both tricky and nerve-wracking! It took me 10 years to find a Defence Partner friend. Partly because I didn't realise what I was missing out on. Partly because I was downright scared to step forward to connect. Partly because I was reluctant to put my hand up for support. Partly because I wasn't given the opportunity to connect and belong in my community. So, when I finally found what I didn't even know I was missing, that connection and support only fellow Defence Partners can give, I felt a weight lift off of me. I caught my breath. I felt like I belonged and wanted every Defence Partner to have what I had found. That's why I created the ML Community Connector Program and where Community Connectors come in! I wanted to give every Defence Partner the opportunity to CONNECT and BELONG in their community just like I had because I knew in my heart what a huge difference it made having Defence Partner friends in your corner who just got you and defence life. ML Community Connectors play a vital role for Defence Partners by bringing them together to create meaningful connections with each other, offering peer support and information, empowering Defence Partners with confidence to access local and defence community-related services, and acknowledging the importance of belonging. Community Connectors are amazing Defence Partners around the country who have stepped forward and put their hand up to volunteer to help connect spouses in their community- the defence community by providing consistent and welcoming spouse-focused events (on weekends and child-free) that ALL Defence Partners can attend. We currently have ML Community Connectors in Amberley and Enoggera QLD, HMAS Cerberus VIC, Sutherland and Williamtown NSW, Rockingham WA, Adelaide SA, and Canberra ACT. Community Connection events take place regularly (every 6 weeks or so). If you would like to become a Community Connector in your location, get in touch via hello@militarylife.com.au! "I want to unschool to give her more freedom. I can't start the journey by forcing her out of school... you can send your kids to school and still be an unschooler in my view. The point is they have the choice”Italy may be Ilaria's country of origin but she well and truly calls our nations capital home. She and her husband (who fatefully met on the day she arrived in Australia over 23 years ago) are raising their two daughters (ages 14 and 8) on a small farm, that she lovingly describes as a geriatric retirement home for animals. Their unschooling experiment began during the covid pandemic lockdowns and they haven't looked back.SUMMARYGrowing up Ilaria's parents described school as her job. They went to work, she went to school. Her duty was to make the most of it and do a good job and she did. The idea of homeschooling began as a joke when Ilaria was deciding on which school to send her daughter to and none of the local options were overly impressive, but it was lockdowns that opened her eyes to the real possibility of adopting an unschooling lifestyle.Because her kids were home, she started observing them and thinking - if she let them do whatever they want, what would they actually learn?Once she saw first hand that they were naturally ticking off the curriculum, they began their unschooling adventure in earnest.Social connections, just like learning, are different in this lifestyle. Navigating teen friendships has been their greatest, but only challenge. Everything else has been a joy.Ilaria loves that her kids ask a tonne of really amazing, left field questions as she herself remembers never asking questions in class because she was so terrified of saying the wrong thing."For the first time in my life, I'm learning because I want to. You know, I think maybe that's secretly the best part of it."Ilaria and her family are a tech family, if they are not out and about in the world they tend to be on screens at home.Other resources that contribute to unschooling for their family are Chat GPT, the wildlife sanctuary where her daughter volunteers, musical theatre, boardgames, science kits, podcasts, audiobooks and social media. The Canberra Homeschool Open Day organised by Ilaria will be held on May 20th 2024 and you can find out more information about it via their website.“I do have hobbies. Like I love to sew and I make soap and all of that. But really, at the moment, my main hobby is homeschooling my kids. It sounds pretty, I don't know, weird. But I'm having a ball doing it.”INSPIRATIONUnschooling Mom2Mom podcastCONNECTInstagram - @unschooling_adventureCanberra Homeschool Open Day website - homeschoolopendaycanberra.weebly.comNOTE: This is an abridged version of the show notes.Follow the link below to find a more detailed summary of what Ilaria shares in this episode.FULL SHOW NOTES HEREConnect with us:Instagram - @australianhomeschoolstoriesSubstack - Australian Homeschool StoriesThis podcast is recorded on the lands of the Bunurong people of the Kulin nation. Today on the Deadass Podcast. I have my Uncle - Dale Perry who shares some of his life and career as a Police Officer in the Australian Federal Police. Also being a part of the Special Operations Team (SWAT Equivalent). The 29th of November this year marked 30 years since the Jolimont Centre siege that took place in Canberra ACT resulting in the serious wounding of one person and the death of another over the course of two hours. The centre was set on fire and extensive damage was caused by a lone gunman. Dale was called in as apart of the Special Operations Team. In the following years, Dale moved to Queensland to join the Queensland Police Service and continued in the traffic branch riding the the motorcycles. It was great reflecting on some of the stories I heard around the dinner table growing up as a child! Cheers for tuning in..https://www.afp.gov.au/news-centre/media-release/30-years-jolimont-siege Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

On this Radioactive Show we hear about the Black Mist Burnt Country art exhibition and symposium which was organised by Burrinja Cultural Centre. The symposium was held on Saturday 9th September in Adelaide. It shed light on South Australia’s nuclear history and related environmental and social effects: ranging from the British atomic tests at Maralinga in the 1950s and 1960s, to the effects of uranium mining and recent proposals to store nuclear waste in South Australia near Hawker and Kimba. The symposium explored how artists have reflected on nuclear issues through their practice and gave a voice to affected communities. Artists Nuclear campaigners and community members presented on current developments in regard to the proposed nuclear waste dump in SA. Among the speakers were: Jessie Boylan (artist), Merilyn Fairskye (artist), Paul Brown (producer), David Noonan (nuclear campaigner), Gavin Mudd, Jim Green (Friends of the Earth), Karina Lester (anti-nuclear activist), Tilman Ruff (Nobel Peace Prize laureate), Greg Bannon from the Flinders Local Action Group and Mara Bonacci (Conservation SA).The exhibition Black Mist Burnt Country is on display at the National Museum of Australia, Canberra ACT from 24 August – 18 November 2018.The briefing paper about shippping nuclear waste through SA's ports mentioned by David Noonan in this show can be found here.
