Today we are hiking up Slieve na Calliagh, also known as the Loughcrew Cairns (276m) in County Meath, with the very wise Hans. This episode is slightly longer than usual, so feel free to listen in two separate sittings! Hans lives with his family in rural Westmeath in Ireland. There he works as an Author, Musician, and Community Connector. He translated the bestseller "The Art of Living" by Sharon Lebell into German and tries to practice the stoic wisdom contained within. He also attempts to defend classic philosophers and poets from being taken over by bad actors in the manosphere.Connect with Hans here. See more about Stoicism here and here. To help the podcast hike up more hills, please be in touch with ideas of who I should be inviting on the podcast, and support me with some waterproof gear. All that and more here. Thank you to all the supporters as well as to the amazing band Bukahara for their permission to use their fabulous, on point song 'Storytelling Animal' as our soundtrack. The World is Storytelling podcast is based on the book by the same name. Re-released Episode- Military Life Community Connectors EXPLAINED PART 1 Maybe you have heard about Military Life Community Connectors, or maybe you want to know more about them. This episode is all about who they are, what they do, and why I felt there was a need for the Military Life Community Connector Program. No one quite gets you like a fellow Defence Partner, but finding and connecting with other partners can be both tricky and nerve-wracking! It took me 10 years to find a Defence Partner friend. Partly because I didn't realise what I was missing out on. Partly because I was downright scared to step forward to connect. Partly because I was reluctant to put my hand up for support. Partly because I wasn't given the opportunity to connect and belong in my community. So, when I finally found what I didn't even know I was missing, that connection and support only fellow Defence Partners can give, I felt a weight lift off of me. I caught my breath. I felt like I belonged and wanted every Defence Partner to have what I had found. That's why I created the ML Community Connector Program and where Community Connectors come in! I wanted to give every Defence Partner the opportunity to CONNECT and BELONG in their community just like I had because I knew in my heart what a huge difference it made having Defence Partner friends in your corner who just got you and defence life. ML Community Connectors play a vital role for Defence Partners by bringing them together to create meaningful connections with each other, offering peer support and information, empowering Defence Partners with confidence to access local and defence community-related services, and acknowledging the importance of belonging. Community Connectors are amazing Defence Partners around the country who have stepped forward and put their hand up to volunteer to help connect spouses in their community- the defence community by providing consistent and welcoming spouse-focused events (on weekends and child-free) that ALL Defence Partners can attend. We currently have ML Community Connectors in Amberley and Enoggera QLD, HMAS Cerberus VIC, Sutherland and Williamtown NSW, Rockingham WA, Adelaide SA, and Canberra ACT. Community Connection events take place regularly (every 6 weeks or so). If you would like to become a Community Connector in your location, get in touch via hello@militarylife.com.au! Get ready to embark on an enlightening journey with our esteemed guest, Dr. Cath Cosgrave, a trailblazer in the realm of rural community development. With her roots in Melbourne's privileged middle class, the contrast with her present life in the rural heart of Bellingen, New South Wales provides us with a captivating narrative. This episode unravels her pioneering 'Attract Connect Stay' framework and the Community Connector program, both instrumental in transforming the dynamics of rural workforces, especially in the health sector. Dr. Cosgrave's transformative journey commenced in 2012 with her PhD at the University of New England where she recognised the pressing need for research on rural workforce development. Narratives like Jacob's, a mental health nurse grappling with rural Australia's isolation, became the linchpin for her ground-breaking framework. Her insights on why professionals choose to stay or leave rural health workforces are invaluable, shedding light on how we can minimise avoidable turnover and enhance the quality of life in rural communities. This episode also delves into the Community Connector model, a beacon of hope for rural communities. With Dr. Cosgrave's emphasis on social connection, the model aims to create robust support networks for new workers and their families relocating to rural areas. We explore how this model, currently funded by local collaborations of rural businesses (seeking to address their professional workforce shortages) and community organisations and individuals (seeking to improve the availability of professional services in their towns), is poised to enhance health and other essential services in rural and regional areas, address professional workforce challenges, and foster inclusivity in rural communities. Tune in for an intellectually stimulating session with Dr. Cosgrave's as we delve into the intricacies of rural workforce dynamics and community development. The vision for the Bakersfield Women's Business Conference originated during the International Year Of The Woman. Phyllis Hullett, then Director of Student Services at Bakersfield College, gathered a group of community-minded women from industry, government, education and service-oriented areas on March 28, 1989. The goal was to discuss the feasibility of producing a business conference geared toward the needs of women. Out of this meeting, twelve women and one lone man, Pat Shaffer, Dean of Development at Bakersfield College, agreed to serve on the executive board. Options Unlimited, The Bakersfield Women's Business Conference was born. Amanda DiGiacomo is joined in studio with NaTesha “T” Johnson the CEO of Upside Productions Management, a strategic partnership company here in Bakersfield. "The thing is, that bar will always move, you'll never hit it. The bar just goes higher and you keep going!" says Mike! "You keep chasing the finish line". It's not end game we are chasing, the end game in life is death. See your everyday ordinary as extraordinary, and know that the little things add up to all the big things. We are doing things that make us happy, being creative, striving for more, showing up every day in all your forms. The trick to success I think would have to be opening up yourself to the idea that you can't do this alone. If there is anything I've learned is that there is power and meaning in community. Go beyond yourself, overcome those fears, connect with others. Then and only then can you open yourself up to the possibility of things going above and beyond what you ever imagined. Your friends and mentors will see things in you that you cannot see in yourself. People rise together. Find your community, surround yourself with the people who lift you up! Since so many people in Parkrose know of Annette Stanhope and have benefited from her work in the community but don't necessarily know her well, I wanted to ask Annette about her life and interests before and outside her life in Parkrose. She grew up in a musical family in Issaquah but spent a lot of time at her grandmother's house in… Parkrose! Her grandma was part of St. Rita Catholic Church that connected with the neighborhood through spaghetti dinners. Annette studied literature at Seattle University, and that's where she met her would-be husband Mark. It turns out dating long distance while he was in veterinary school years later allowed her to work for National Civilian Community Corps (AmeriCorps NCCC). Those varied experiences sparked her initial interest in community involvement, so she was ready to jump into community when she bought her grandmother's Parkrose house. As a young mom, she wanted to meet more neighbors, so she joined the Parkrose Neighborhood Association and began meeting people. She also got involved with the Prescott Elementary parent group, and for the past few years, she's worked for Historic Parkrose as well. We discuss some history of the neighborhood and the effect that city planning and development have on our daily lives. Annette also shared that being so heavily involved can cause burnout and encouraged others to get involved. She's got so much going on, so tune in and learn about Annette and some of the great projects she and others are working on in Parkrose! You can email Annette at parkroseneighbors@gmail.com or outreach@historicparkrose.com for things specific to Historic Parkrose or message Annette on Facebook. Annette shared a great way to participate in April 2022 is the Parkrose Community Plan open house! There are two options to be part of the same presentation and conversation: Saturday, April 9, 3:00 – 4:30 pm and Thursday, April 14, 6:30 – 8:00 pm. You can check out more community stories and get real estate insights at parkroselife.com, and please share this podcast with a neighbor!

What's the time? Why, it's Tech Talk o'clock! Steven is joined by Robin, Emails Andy and 'special' guest Shaun Preece this week - where's Tim you may be asking, well, he's still on his holidays. The fearsome foursome sit down to discuss Windows 11 - what will be included, when it's coming, and what the accessibility features might be like. The hot phrase on everyone's techy lips this week is TPM - well Shaun's here to explain why it's being talked about so much with regards to upgrading from Windows 10. Also on the show this week - wearable technology! The world of wearable tech is very much available and accessible to the blind community via smart glasses and more, some of which even claims it can help improve vision. Mark Evans from RNIB's Technology for Life team and shares his findings on the latest gadgets out there. The pandemic has cost many of us the ability to learn new skills and meet new people. However for one group of blind people, they used the latest tech to continue their desire to learn braille. The remote braille group got in touch with RNIB's Community Connector team to get support in setting up a group via Microsoft Teams. Louise, Aneeba and Trish joined RNIB volunteer trainer Chantal to start the course, helped by RNIB's Midlands and East England Community Connector Amy Woodward. Volunteer Chantal told Steven Scott how it all came about. If that's not all, we also dip our toes briefly into the emails inbox, with one listener less than impressed with Sky! We're in the middle of a very heavy and very exciting lift. Not only are we opening a new school next fall, but we're also designing one that will use very different teaching methods and designs than most high schools. As we do this work, we think it's important that you to get to know the actual human beings at the heart of The Mastery School of Hawken. Next up: Ambrose Faturoti, Dean of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Justice for Student Life. He's also a key member of the design team for the Mastery School whose work focuses on developing community partnerships with our Glenville and University Circle neighbors. Ambrose has a passion for connecting people and communities. "We have a really important opportunity with young people who, when they leave us are going to be leaders in whatever sectors they find themselves," he says. "I want to help students understand how to practice empathy." He also has a flaw, however, which he reveals towards the end of the episode...

Moving around a bit in their early life has connected Lina Dostilio to the concept of space and place, particularly as it relates to community engagement and Dostilio’s work within that framework. A self-described hard worker, Dostilio thinks deeply about how to build relationships between and among folks in the community and those engaged in an academic university. A lover of “bizarre British television,” cooking, and her family, Lina balances long workdays with finding joy off the clock.
I’m excited about this week’s episode of The Crushing Debt Podcast, because my guest didn’t know she was going to record an episode when she walked into my office, and her boss has been trying to get on the show for a while now. I’ve known Madison Thayer, the Community Connector for SEC Inspection Services for a little more than a year. I’ve know her boss, and the owner of the company, Melissa Menikheim, for many more years than that. SEC Inspection Services is a family owned business here in Tampa Bay that is 20 years old! SEC is an inspection company and Madison and I talk about all of the reasons that an inspection is important - the first being that a home is likely the single largest purchase you’ll ever make in your life, so you need to have someone inspect that asset before you buy to make sure your investment is protected. Madison and I share stories about inspections: funny stories and horror stories. At SEC Inspection, all of their inspectors are good lookers. If you want to contact Madison you can do so at Madison@SECinspection.com or visit the website at www.secinspection.com. If you want to share an inspection horror story with me, or if you want advice on what to look for once the inspection is complete, you can connect with me at Shawn@YesnerLaw.com or www.YesnerLaw.com.
Ian Lathrop from USAID's LEARN project talks about how to show the art of humility, and learn from failures so we don't repeat them. After action reviews, pause and reflect, and having leaders model behavior are all practical actions he suggests for getting better at this. Some of the resources he suggests to create space for learning from failure are USAID Learning Lab - CLA Maturity Tool Resources, the video on Community Connector and CLA: Proving the Concept, and Learning Lab's failure blog.
