Episode 430: Phil Beauregard - Managing Partner, Impellent Ventures

The VentureFizz Podcast

Episode 430 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Phil Beauregard, Managing Partner of Impellent Ventures. I first met Phil back when Boston was going through another massive resurgence of growth following the financial crisis of 2008. It was a special time when local founders and investors banded together to help build and scale the Boston tech ecosystem. It was a movement that is reminiscent of what we are seeing today with the Mass AI Coalition. There was a major buzz in the air back then, and it worked, resulting in the launch of multiple successful companies, including two of Phil's own startups which were both acquired. There is a phrase that Phil commonly uses, which is “why join the Navy when you can be a pirate” and I think it speaks volumes to his mentality and how they deploy capital at Impellent Ventures. They don't just simply follow the herd, especially when it comes to finding elite entrepreneurs. They are entirely location-agnostic and welcome working with exceptional founders who are tackling massive, real-world problems in emerging ecosystems... not just out in Silicon Valley. Impellent Ventures is focused on making seed and pre-seed investments. The firm is led by Phil, David Brown (who previously appeared on Episode 190), and Tariq Trotter, aka Black Thought of The Roots, who serves as a General Partner at the firm. In this episode of our podcast, we cover: * A conversation around building startups outside of San Francisco, and why we are living through the "consumerization of the enterprise" era. * The correlation between smaller fund sizes and investor returns. * Phil's background growing up in New Bedford and studying business at The Wharton School at UPenn, plus how he first caught the entrepreneurial bug and met his co-founder, Matt Grace. * The inside story behind his two exits: Objective Logistics to Carbon Black and Rekindle to HubSpot. * His transition from operator to investor at Impellent Ventures, plus all the details on their unique investment criteria, portfolio company examples, and how Tariq Trotter joined the firm. * His role as an early advisor to multiple successful tech companies, including the critical advice that Toast luckily chose not to take. * How Phil is leveraging AI to build his own Relationship Intelligence System, helping him scale his ability to "pay it forward" to the ecosystem. * Plus, so much more!

In The Door of No Return: Being-As-Black (Temple University Press, 2026), Michael E. Sawyer presents a bold work of speculative theory and philosophy that explores how Black people bring the future into being—and what existence in that future looks like. He considers what people of African descent face and the proper response to the situation. He introduces the idea of Being-As-Black as a response and questions the overarching ethos that will be the guide to a beneficial resolution. Using critical theory and philosophy, Sawyer decouples Black identity and Black philosophy from White and Western frames by building on Toni Morrison's ideas of Black Thought and encouraging an understanding of Black Self-Consciousness and Black Self-Identity on Black terms. The Door of No Return uses music, literature, visual art, and a variety of physical disciplines to imagine a world that differs from one that confounds the positive formation of Black Self-Consciousness under the coercive regime of white supremacy and Anti-Black racism. Michael E. Sawyer is Professor with Tenure of African American Literature & Culture, and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh. Brigid Wallace is a graduate student at Lehigh University whose research focuses on the French Atlantic and Latin American world during the 18th and 19th centuries. Learn more about your ad choices.

Der ganz normale FWC-Wahnsinn also. Viel Spaß damit - und danke fürs Zuhören!

Send us Fan MailEpisode #274 – March 21, 2026 – “…"Don't you know the powers that be Are using people as pawns, devouring we”  | Hi and welcome to Episode 274 of the Rational Black Thought podcast. I am your host, Neo Griot. This week's title comes from Blackalicious and their song “Shallow Days”: “Don't you know the powers that be are using people as pawns, devouring we.” And that line captures the deeper context of the moment we are living in. We are in an age of noise, distraction, and performance, where ordinary people are too often manipulated, divided, and consumed by systems of power that depend on confusion to survive. This is not just about individual bad actors. It is about a structure, a society where exploitation is normalized, where suffering is rationalized, and where too many people are taught to mistake being used for simply being alive.  We are living in “shallow days and hollow nights”, and the real challenge is to see clearly enough not to be played by them. Intro: Quote of the Week: Ibram X. Mach talks about his philosophy on art, explaining why he focuses on building lasting "bones" rather than chasing fleeting clout. We also get into the science of "flyness" and the challenges of dressing around a demanding watch. He even gives us a sneak peek into his upcoming music, including a new tape with August Fanon and a project with Black Thought.

Episode 91: Christian McBride. Nine-time GRAMMY winner Christian McBride is one of the most influential jazz artists in the game. His collaborations span icons like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, James Brown, and Sting. He's the leader of multiple acclaimed bands including the Christian McBride Big Band, Inside Straight, and New Jawn. He also serves as the host of NPR's Jazz Night in America and was the Artistic Director of the Newport Jazz Festival for a decade. His story is incredible, and we're setting the stage here with Part 1, The Early Years. Growing up in Philadelphia, Christian was surrounded by greatness. His high school classmates included Questlove, Black Thought, Joey DeFrancesco, and Kurt Rosenwinkel, just to name a few. In this episode, we talk about those formative years, the Philly music scene, and how he broke into the spotlight with Wynton Marsalis and Freddie Hubbard, along with the wild story of his rare opportunity to play for Miles Davis. We also get into his professional mentality, early lessons on leadership, and what it took to earn respect from legends while still a teenager. Christian is an amazing storyteller, and this conversation is full of history, heart, and laughs. We had the best time recording this one, so I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. Lets go!
