At times, being a caregiver can be an isolating experience—and especially for men who may struggle to ask for help. CANCER BUZZ spoke to Mike McGarry—who following his wife's cancer diagnosis—was introduced to Jack's Caregiver Coalition, a non-profit dedicated to supporting men throughout the caregiver journey. This supportive community meets monthly to engage in unique activities like ice sculpting and axe throwing and share their caregiver experiences. This creates a safe space for men to talk openly about their struggles, offer counsel to one another, and celebrate successes. Mike shares how Jack's Caregiver Coalition became a valuable resource that supported him as he navigated the unfamiliar role of caregiver. My latest podcast is because I care for you. I share this message with you every year – Take Care Of Yourself, especially during the holidays. ESPECIALLY DURING THIS COVID-19 PANDEMIC. My podcast is the recording of my presentation during the Caregiver Coalition of NE Florida's recent webinar. I talk about how you can be COPING WITH THE HOLIDAYS. I share some important information and advice. This year I discuss extra precautions we are asked to take (and should follow) to protect ourselves and our loved ones from the COVID-19 virus. I wish you a Very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year. I look forward to working together with you (and, hopefully, seeing you in person again) in 2021.

Mr. Christensen is a big-time talker whose best man in his wedding wasn't a man at all. He's also a technologist whose favorite season is baseball season. As his wife Sara faces a rare cancer called an angiosarcoma he often finds himself more afraid of her medical procedures than she is. And while he also often finds himself flying solo as a caregiver, no one would accuse him of lone-wolfing it. Alan has reached out to his neighbors who responded in kind with food, snow and debris removal and even cards for encouragement! Being a talker and not a texter, Alan is able to reach out via phone calls to his Uncle Dave, Uncle Jim and sister Becky for countless hours of support. Alan is also a proud volunteer for Rein in Sarcoma and a member of Jack's Caregiver Coalition.
Mr. Cesarek is a co-founder of Jack's Caregiver Coalition who fancies himself a trophy husband. He lost his sister to Leukemia when he was 11, his bride was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer when their daughter was 8 months old, and his mom recently developed endometrial cancer. Recently he completed a 4-year stint as a stay at home dad. Now he's in law school and actively supports the mission of numerous cancer focused non-profits. He spends his spare time winning cool stuff like the Heffelbower Fellowship and the University of St. Thomas Law School's 2018 “Living the Mission” award.

Kyle Woody is the founder of Jack's Caregiver Coalition, a non-profit organization striving to provide world-class hospitality to men who care cancer caregivers in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area. The mission of Jack's is to improve the way men think, feel and act in their role as cancer caregivers. During our conversation we discussed: The unique needs that men have when serving as caregivers. How Jack's is an event-based group, providing an alternative to the traditional "sit in a circle" support group. These events have included ax throwing, fishing and hunting outings and golf games. The bonding and deep conversations that naturally happen at these events. The long-term goal to grow to a national organization supporting men who serve as caregivers for those affected by more than cancer, including Alzheimers, A.L.S. and Post-Traumatic Stress. In this episode, I talk with Veronica Mitchell about the sensitive topic of taking the keys away. Veronica is a friend of mine who I have known for awhile. We have served on the same committees at the Caregiver Coalition of San Diego and also the San Diego County Council on Aging. Veronica is an advocate for seniors, women, and caregivers. She is a guest blogger and writes her own blog featured on her website. She is passionate about prevention of Elder Abuse and Scams, along with helping families take the keys from their senior loved ones. You love your parent or spouse, yet you know that they can no longer safely drive. How do you know that it is time to take the keys away? How do you have that conversation with them in a loving and respectful way? Where do you begin? Families members are afraid to approach the subject. It is our last part of our freedom as we age, and it is very emotional subject. My father's Parkinson's caused his eyes to shut and he was still driving! Obviously, I was panicked and in our family, we had to deal with the tough subject of taking the keys away. Sadly, my story is not uncommon. Veronica and broke this down into 4 phases: * Have Conversations with your loved ones and start it as early as possible. Have a frank conversation and the most candid approach is best. Don't wait until it is a crisis. * Identify, Observe & Document Unsafe Driving. Follow them and observe their driving. Check out the car and see if there are more dents than usual. When you are driving them around ask them directions to get somewhere. Do they get flustered, angry or confused in traffic? * Create a Plan, Manage the Plan, and Vet All Participants. Coordinate with friends and family members about who is going to drive them to places. They still need to get to places such as doctors appointments or haircuts. They also need social engagement. Make sure there is a plan to get them to social activities so they don't become depressed feeling stuck in one place. Make sure to be flexible and have all family members help.
