Nick Fish is our guest. He is the fourth president of American Atheists in its 60-year history. We discuss his journey to the organization, the strategic plan for the next 60 years, the current climate of religious freedom in the U.S., and how groups can collaborate to uphold secular values. Nick shares his background as a civil rights activist and his path into the secular movement. His frustration with partisan politics led him to focus on issues where religious intrusion impacts various social areas, such as LGBTQ rights, abortion access, and public education. The conversation shifts towards the introduction of a new strategic plan by American Atheists aimed at fostering community, advocating for equality, and fighting for secularism in government. Nick outlines the importance of emphasizing religious pluralism while centering the voices of atheists in national discourse. Nick expresses concerns about the health of religious freedom in the U.S., especially regarding the rising influence of Christian nationalism. He criticizes the misleading narratives regarding religious freedom propagated by some groups that actually seek religious supremacy rather than equality. Nick also gives his thoughts about Released Time Religious Instruction programs like LifeWise Academy in Ohio, where public school students are allowed to leave campus for religious instruction, emphasizing that this practice detracts from actual education and can ostracize non-religious students. Throughout the interview, Nick highlights the importance of collaboration among secular organizations and the need to build local-level activism. Nick finally shares details about the upcoming national conference scheduled for Easter weekend in 2025, taking place in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis–Saint Paul. Hi this is meteorologist Steve Pelletttiere and I am the weatherman. Thanks for checking in to the weathermanpod.com for this Tuesday the 30th day of January 2024. Here on the weatherman pod, we first take a look across the nation for the airline hubs and see where there's any travel delays expected using those major airline hubs like Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas Fort Worth , the New York City area  the west coast as well. We give you an outlook about what to expect delay wise in and out of those places. Well, for Tuesday, not much happening across the nation . The weather looks great down in Miami, just about all of Texas is going to be dry as will Chicago and Minneapolis Saint Paul. DC is looking pretty good as does Newark ,NY and the Boston area. Denver, no problem with snow there and LA and San Francisco looking dry, but another area of low pressure is moving in from the Aleutians  and that's going to give pacific northwest some rainy weather commencing later tomorrow and through midweek. So All in all no problems are expected, traveling wise ,across most of the nation on your Tuesday . Here's a  quick peek at Wednesdays weather .We see those Pacific Northwest storms moving in stronger so Seattle and Portland will be raining as well as San Francisco Juar some rain showers across from Charlotte down to the Atlanta area but no major problems expected. Here's a look at the weather situation across the northeast corridor that includes DC to Baltimore Philadelphia New York and Boston, and this is the weather forecast for that area for today Tuesday right up through this upcoming first weekend of February. Everyone's been talking about the cloud cover being with us I've been told it's been about 10 days now that we've had this extra cloud cover it looks like it remains on Tuesday temperatures generally in the 30s to near 40 which is pretty close to normal for this time of year. Tuesday night looks cloudy lows down into the upper 20s and more clouds for Wednesday as we end the month with highs generally in the upper 30s and low 40s. Thursday is the first day of February this year we've got the 29th coming up it's leap year and we're going to have generally fair skies to start off the month with partial sunshine on Thursday 47. I'll believe it when i see it Friday is also looking partly sunny with highs in the middle 40s but a cold front moves through and that means that on Saturday and Sunday sunshine but temperatures colder in the mid to upper 30s. Friday is groundhog's day for all the local groundhogs in the nation. Our  Punxsutawney  Phil ,despite what the weather, seems to have its own mind as far as whether or not he sees his shadow.Right now the weather situation looks fair, for Friday in Punxsutawney  Pennsylvania however good possibility he won't see his shadow,  why I have no idea. Thanks for checking into weathermanpod.com on this Tuesday hope you have a great day more update on the weather the last day of the month on Wednesday look at the beginning of February. Have a great day

Hi this is meteorologist Steve Pelletieri and I am the weatherman! Thanks for stopping by weathermanpod.com on this Wednesday the 24th day of January 2024. On the weathermanpod.com we concentrate on aviation hub weather if you're traveling by plane anywhere in the country we talk about the major airline hubs the number one being Atlanta and other places like Dallas Fort Worth Charlotte Miami course Newark NY and the Boston area Minneapolis Saint Paul. We also talk about whether in Phoenix, Southern California at Los Angeles or San Diego, San Francisco and Portland OR along with Seattle WA. Bad weather in any of these places could mean significant delays with connecting flights. Delta has its hub in Atlanta and when Atlanta has bad weather it can slow down most of the delta North American operations similar with united at Newark Ohio at Cleveland and Chicago the original hub of United Airlines Dallas Fort Worth the hub for American and other airlines like Southwest at Love field also play an important raw and keeping flights going across North America. The gateway to south America as Miami many times the weather there can be quite severe slowing things down and transfers to other flights in the Caribbean central or South America as well. We'll also talk about other interesting weather news or comments that are appropriate for the time of year, For example ,did you know at the old Farmer's Almanac predicted that temperatures would be two degrees above normal with limited snowfall for the northeast corridor during the month of December?  Actually, during the month of December, temperatures were between 5 and 8 degrees above normal of course with low snowfall. Interestingly enough, the Farmer's almanac predicts that temperatures will be two degrees below normal from DC to Boston during the month of January and with higher amounts of snowfall. Well,  so far,  coming on 2/3 to 3/4 of the way through the month we see that temperatures are still a little bit above normal but snowfall amounts in DC and Philadelphia are greater than they were all of last year. New York city continues to be on the low end with less than 3 inches of snow so far as we get closer to the end of the month of January. So all in all,  the almanac did pretty good at least predicting warmer than normal conditions in December when it was way  above normal and more snowfall for January and that seems to have happened as well. We'll keep on top of the almanac for the remainder of this winter as we approach Groundhog's day. But here at weathermanpod.com we also deal with the forecast in particular for the northeast corridor and that looks like it's going to be wet and warm over the next several days. Here's the weather across the northeast corridor, and it looks like wet and warm weather as we get into the January thaw we'll talk about that more on Thursday's report but occasional rain and showers with temperatures near 40 expected for Wednesday day and more rain likely for Thursday arriving from the southwest temperatures on Thursday will range in the 40s but it's on Friday that we might have temperatures close to 60 in Philadelphia and New York still with some early showers but then a clearing trend for this upcoming weekend. So that's the weather round up across the nation a little bit about the Farmer's Almanac today I'm meteorologist Steve Pelletieri and I am the weatherman thanks for checking in we'll talk to you again soon.

Episode Notes Hyatt unveiled its newest brand, Hyatt Studios, on Tuesday, becoming the latest hotel company to launch an extended stay brand, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill.  Hyatt expects to open its first Hyatt Studios hotels next year. O'Neill writes Hyatt's entry into extended stay is part of a boom in the category, with Marriott and Wyndham having launched extended stay brands recently. Extended stay projects represent roughly a third of the construction pipeline for U.S. hotels, according to hotel industry consulting firm Lodging Econometrics. Next, Delta Air Lines has increased its market share in key markets such as Boston, New York, and Seattle this year compared to 2019 levels. But the company still needs its core hubs to fully recover, reports Edward Russell, editor of Airline Weekly, a Skift publication.  Russell writes the recovery of Delta's core hubs — including Atlanta, Detroit and Minneapolis-Saint Paul — was delayed amid operational challenges that forced the airline to fly less than it hoped last year. Delta President Glen Hauenstein said the company's hubs fuel its profits. Russell adds that Delta needs its hubs to rebound to help it hit its financial targets, one of which is recovering to pre-Covid operation margin levels in 2024.  Finally, online travel agency Hopper's feature enabling customers to leave a tip as part of a reservation has been getting a lot of buzz recently, writes Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes.  Hopper actually made the tip an optional fee in 2018, three years after the company implemented a mandatory fee in its reservations. Dawes reports the amount of the tip is either a flat fee or a percentage of the reservation. A Hopper spokesperson recently said many customers are willing to pay a small fee to thank the company for its service, so kept the tip feature.  The spokesperson added that the optional tip is a way for users to acknowledge the value of its price prediction and flight-watch tools. The company offers those features for free.

School of Movies

[School of Movies 2023] Part II of the Coen Brothers series. This 1996 film was the point where they hit the big leagues. Showered with awards and nominations, Joel and Ethan were placed alongside great and classic directors by the establishment. The story itself is one of a bungled kidnap, a bag filled with cursed money and the needless murders that take place as a result of seeking it. It's a frosty noir, set on the snowbound roads between Fargo, North Dakota and the twin cities of Minneapolis-Saint Paul. A weasel of a car salesman arranges for the kidnapping of his own wife, and from that atrocious act, calamity radiates.   The local sheriff on the case is Margie Gunderson, played by Frances McDormand, whose genial, mumsy attitude hides a sharp, observant detective brain. And it is from her perspective that we observe with bewilderment the cluttered mistakes of daft, greedy men.  Next time around we go bowling with The Big Lebowski. More kidnaps, more bungling, more greed, less murder.

On April 11, 2021, at 1:48 p.m., an officer with the police department of Brooklyn Center, a suburb of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright, a black man, during a traffic stop. Wright had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. As officers attempted to detain him, a struggle ensued and Wright re-entered his vehicle. An officer discharged their firearm, believing they were using their taser gun instead, striking Wright before he drove off. Wright crashed his vehicle several blocks away. Though EMS arrived and attempted to revive him, Wright was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Wright's girlfriend was also a passenger in the car. She sustained non-life threatening injuries from the crash and was transported to the hospital. The event unfolded as the trial of Derek Chauvin—the police officer who on May 25, 2020, knelt on George Floyd's neck for several minutes as he died—was underway in nearby Minneapolis. Wright's death occurred approximately 10 miles from the street intersection where Floyd died. As news of the Brooklyn Center incident spread, family members of Wright, neighbors to the car crash, and protesters began gathering at the car crash scene in Brooklyn Center in what was initially a peaceful demonstration. Several protesters came from another rally organized by families of people who had been killed by police, that they had held earlier in the day in nearby Saint Paul, Minnesota. The crowd grew to several hundred people by evening as they demanded more information from police investigators. As tension at the scene rose over the ensuing hours, police in tactical gear arrived, formed a line, and moved in when demonstrators began climbing on police vehicles and throwing bricks. Police fired a non-lethal round at a demonstrator who held a chunk of concrete and fired tear gas into the crowd. At nightfall, demonstrators gathered outside the Brooklyn Center Police Department building and stood off against a line of police in riot gear. Authorities declared the gathering unlawful and gave orders for the crowd to disperse. After having rocks and other objects thrown at them, police fired tear gas and flash-bang grenades into the crowd, scattering demonstrators. Violence and widespread looting occurred at many stores overnight in Brooklyn Center, in Minneapolis, and at other locations in the Twin Cities region. In Brooklyn Park, an adjacent city to Brooklyn Center, a gunshot was fired into the glass door of a police station, though no one was injured. Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott imposed an overnight curfew and the city closed its schools on April 12. State officials deployed the Minnesota National Guard to the Brooklyn Center and a state joint law enforcement agency deployed forces throughout the metropolitan area. On April 12, in reaction to the unrest, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz enacted a 7 p.m to 6 a.m. CST curfew throughout much of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul region: in Hennepin, Ramsey, Anoka, and Dakota counties. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/atttm/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/atttm/support

She received her bachelor of arts at the University of Minnesota in 2003 and an MFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2005. I think what makes Andrea so interesting is her ability to address the relationships of Indigenous artists and museums. She recognizes and addresses the historic problems that institutions like museums with their colonial roots and their detrimental effects on Indigenous people, but also how Indigenous artists are now taking control of the narrative and reshaping the art landscape. She also talks about the concept of Indigenous Futurism, which I find so absolutely incredible. James Maurelle is an interdisciplinary artist, sculpture, video, photography, and sound art are his analog and digital primes. His work investigates the correlation formed between labor and creativity, at the center of this byway is the spirit of his work. Constructing objects and moving images are not unlike creating music compositions, the accompaniment, i.e., tools and materials, are a call and response to dexterity. The rubric to complete any composition is to know ones’ instrument(s)/tools; the creative process is based on this reciprocal understanding. Jazz is the primer which propels the work, the tone/feel of every composition is in direct association with the culture. Every object I compose is a physical versioning of a historic recording or happening, every tool used is an augmented scale referencing an industrial progression. The materials (wood, metal, plastic, film) are the staff paper, and every committed strike upon these materials forms a note or chord. The fluidity connecting mind, hand, and tools are based on the augmented triad which is the cornerstone of my work ethic. The main objective is to continue creating full-bodied compositions, as long as the staff paper flows, I will inscribe upon it. His work has shown in solo and group exhibitions in New York, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Austin, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Richmond, Cincinnati, and San Francisco. He is a recipient of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Fellowship (2015). Rapper Killer Mike tearfully tells Atlanta protesters: "I am tired of seeing black men die" George Floyd death: Ex-officer charged with murder in Minneapolis A former Minneapolis police officer has been arrested and charged with murder following the death of an unarmed black man in custody. Derek Chauvin, who is white, was shown in footage kneeling on 46-year-old George Floyd's neck on Monday. He and three other officers have been sacked. Days of looting and arson in the Minnesota city have boiled over into nationwide protests. The case has reignited US anger over police killings of black Americans. What did the prosecutor say? Hennepin County Prosecutor Mike Freeman said Mr Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He said he "anticipates charges" for the three other officers but would not offer more details. Mr Freeman said his office "charged this case as quickly as evidence has been presented to us". "This is by far the fastest that we've ever charged a police officer," he noted. According to the criminal complaint, Mr Chauvin acted with "a depraved mind, without regard for human life". What's the latest on the protests? On Friday evening, the White House was placed on lockdown after a protest was held outside. "I can't breathe," demonstrators could be heard chanting, invoking the last words of Mr Floyd and Eric Garner, a black man who died after being held in a police chokehold in New York in 2014. The lockdown ended at about 20:30 EDT, with the US Secret Service reopening the building's entrances and exits to staff. Meanwhile, curfews have been ordered for the Twin Cities of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, from 20:00 to 06:00 on both Friday and Sat night. On Thursday, during the third night of protests over Mr Floyd's death, a police station was set alight. A number of buildings have been burned, looted and vandalised in recent days, prompting the activation of the state's National Guard troops. Why has a US city gone up in flames? Twitter hides Trump tweet for 'glorifying violence' In Atlanta on Friday, a police vehicle was set alight as protesters gathered near the offices of news broadcaster CNN. There have also been demonstrations elsewhere, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Louisville, Phoenix, Columbus and Memphis. Frustration was already simmering over the recent deaths of two other black Americans, Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia and Breonna Taylor How did George Floyd die? .. Mr Floyd's family and their lawyer, Benjamin Crump, said that the arrest was "welcome but overdue". The family said they wanted a more serious, first-degree murder charge as well as the arrest of the other officers involved. The statement called for the city to change its policing, saying: "Today, George Floyd's family is having to explain to his children why their father was executed by police on video." Former US President Barack Obama also weighed in, saying: "This shouldn't be 'normal' in 2020 America." His statement added: "If we want our children to grow up in a nation that lives up to its highest ideals, we can and must be better." #PLEASE #SHARE #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd I CAN'T BREATHE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-63Vwf9n3g --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sikilizaafrica/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sikilizaafrica/support

Lisa Alioto is a U.S. lawyer who trained hard and climbed to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. Unwittingly to Lisa, conquering that incredible physical challenge would mentally prepare her for even bigger physical - and medical error - challenges. Years later and well into her law career, Lisa started to experience extreme exhaustion and sleeping symptoms that progressed to black outs, memory loss and vision loss.  In an effort to find what was causing her debilitating symptoms, Lisa encountered a slew of uneducated physicians and misinformed physicians and careless physicians. Lisa was exposed to multiple medical errors - including a twisted version of cognitive behavior therapy , and so-called exercise therapy and both of which exacerbated her illness causing her to be more ill and disabled - Eventually Lisa received a proper diagnosis of a neuro-immune illness. Not one to sit back and let injustice continue, Lisa has taken her experiences with medical error, and advocates for other patients so they don’t have to go through the same medical harm and delayed diagnosis she did. Lisa tells the struggle she encountered with a medical system that has embedded a medical error into its education of doctors and treatment of patients.  SHOW NOTES:     Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro (Lisa is 3rd from right) 0:05:00 Lisa was born in Milwaukee - one older brother - moved around a lot in mid-West - parents married 50+ years - college in Minnesota then twin cities (Minneapolis–Saint Paul) for law degree - undergrad in psychology, criminology minor - thought she would be a police officer 0:06:15 Gradual onset of illness - started 2014 at age 43 - noticed getting more tired and exhuasted, harder to get to work - by 2015 was impacting work, took much more effort because so exhausted - sleep quality poor and declining - sought medical help 0:07:15 A lot of different kind of doctor visits - really frustrating - also expensive - now knows she has compromised immune system so getting sick a lot from doctor waiting rooms - but no body knew what to do - throwing out guesses as to what causing her illness, but some of the guesses were quite harmful - different meds - one medication was so strong - was given 8X dose of large man, subsequent doctors have tested Lisa for organ damage - also told to spend 12 hours a day outside and will be fine 0:08:30 An impossibility living in Minneapolis, not enough sunshine - also sent for cognitive behavior therapy - a top hospital told Lisa to exercise more, but she was very active before getting sick, an excercise buff - initially thought it was great idea, but it turned out it was the worst advice she received 0:09:30 Lisa was a mountain climber - 2005 / 06 decided to get into shape - started intense workouts - wanted to push further and wanted to climb Mt Kilimanjaro and summit it - one of her biggest accomplishments in many ways 0:10:45 Climbing was a real challenge - altitude and effort hard on the body - a migraine the day before the summit - an experience of a lifetime - now draws on that accomplishment to help deal with chronic illness and other life challenges     To Chew or Not to Chew   0:12:45 When initially ill, Lisa thought she had a sleeping disorder because it was so poor and she was exhausted - went to a sleep clinic - but in 2016 more symptoms - memory loss, vision loss, swollen lymph nodes - health went down hill 0:14:00 No doctors in Minnesota for ME patients - so not getting any care - waiting for her appointment at the Stanford clinic - but Lisa's GP said that Lisa's symptoms were beyond her skills - so went to a lot of different specialists: rheumatology, infectious diseases, internal medicine, neurologist - but not finding any thing to explain symptoms - finally went to clinic that diagnosed her with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) - aka 'chronic fatigue syndrome' 0:15:30 Felt relief getting a diagnosis - but relief short lived until she did her own research on ME - learned about it and went to 3 day course to manage disease - but more research exposed that exercise and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) were doing more harm than good 0:17:00 CBT reinforced that she should be progressing with exercise - but in the end, the only thing they helped with was with memory loss - working out caused relapses, so a short lived experience with that program 0:18:00 Difference between CBT Lisa experienced, and CBT people living with chronic illness receive - Lisa loved working out, but it would cause a relapse and bed bound for days - got to the point where Lisa would consider how much chewing was involved with certain foods because her energy was so limited - choosing oatmeal over sandwich 0:18:45 Hard for people who have never been seriously ill to understand having to choose food based on how much energy to chew the food - too much energy from chewing - lost a lot of weight because too tired to make food, chew food 0:21:00 Lisa did more research about ME - about misinformation, myths - but did get helpful information about not pushing herself physically - also experienced black outs, unresponsive for hours - like coming out of deep dark hole and hit by truck, feeling terrible - but has decreased somewhat since she stopped pushing herself     Black Outs   0:22:15 Very scary having black outs - would hide her symptoms in public - but scared that someting bad could happen when she was blacked out 0:24:00 One turnaround in health was stopping exercise - but still had post exertional malaise (PEM) symptoms from doing too much when feeling 'good' - but next day would be crashed - learnig to pace her energy has been hard because she's a very motivated person - graduated top honors in law school, always tries to do her best at what she tries 0:25:30 Now when someone asks her to do something, Lisa has to look at how much energy she'll expend the day before the event, the day of the event, and if she has time to recover the day after the event - will it cause more harm than good? 0:26:30 "paying the price' of too much exertion means laying on the couch the next day - if lucky, she can open her eyes to watch tv - sleeping for 10 hours and laying on the couch all day to recover - eating is optional / minimal due to energy required - had to accept that self care is productive 0:28:30 Works from home every other day because of energy of taking shower and getting ready uses all her energy - putting on healthy face when sick takes a lot of energy too 0:29:30 'chronic fatigue syndrome' is a misnomer, so employers had to learn about - had to educate her employer - also involved in ME advocacy - some work with the Centre of Disease Control (CDC), health care providers - also volunteer for state ME org, doing social media - also formed Minnesota ME Alliance to support people in Minnesota - so many people are completely house or bed bound - want to find and help them and educate medical providers so people can get diagnosis and not waste time and money - also write a lot of articles about living with ME 0:32:45 Writing therapeutic - realized grieving for loss of acitve lifestyle, etc - used to do a lot for her parents, but now role reversal and parents are her care takers - example of grocery shopping because it takes energy to lift things, walk around store pushing cart, and unpacking at home     Chronic Illness Made Lisa a Better Person   0:34:45 Grief and loss of losing life she had known - loss a lot of friends, shocking - but 2/3 gone once she couldn't be active, she lost friends - now feel have replaced a lot of those things - doing chair yoga with seniors, meditation - some positive things - may sound weird, but getting a chronic illness has made her a better person - because before was very motivated to mover herself forward, but now goals impact a lot of other people beyond herself 0:37:30 Engages a lot with chronic illness communities - so much campassion in these communities - brought out the best in her - more understanding 0:38:50 Biggest goal is pacing her energy to get better health - but hard time giving up advocacy and still trying to find balance with personal health - but had recent house fire threw a wrench into pacing - to help others, she needs to be healthy 0:40:40 Currently trying to get appointment at Stanford (Complex Care Clinic) so she can see a ME doctor - recently tried low dose naltrexone (LDN) and given her a small boost in energy - curcumin supplement may be helping but dealing with house fire aftermath so hard to tell - continue learning about potential new symptom treatment 0:42:30 Uses a sleep monitor and it shows she's not getting deep sleep - told she has 'spontaneous arousal' during sleep where she wakes briefly - but don't know cause - took meds to help with sleep, but caused more problems 0:44:20 Lisa will need to 'rest hard' after our interview - END     Connect with Lisa Atiolo   Twitter @lisaalioto   Minnesota ME Alliance   Blog - RealisticOptimism.org - focused on how you can live a life filled with happiness, gratitude and joy despite the challenges of a chronic illness.   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RealisticOptimism/. Today the bench we visit with John Breitinger. John is a Minneapolis resident and commercial real estate developer who has been in this field for a while. Currently, John is doing some major consulting work for a large bank. He has a cabin about two hours north east of Minneapolis Saint Paul, Minnesota. This cabin is a very old-school cabin with a few outbuildings. As you will hear described in this episode, one of the buildings on his property is a garage. Built in the 1930s with a lot of character, he got to scratching his head and thinking well this would be an ideal place for an authentic sauna. John’s recently completed sauna build project John is a great photographer. He captured the building of his sauna. Check out this post here. In addition, you’ll see John’s meticulous approach to his sauna building project. Being a commercial real estate developer, John is well familiar with all of the aspects to a project. He leaned into this build with much the same rigor and enthusiasm as with his day job. Yet there are two things about John that bare noting: One is that he stumbled upon the authentic sauna experience much like many of us, through his overseas travel in Europe, Northern Europe specifically. The deep heat stayed in his bones, like it does with a lot of us including myself. John brought that feeling back with him to America. Here, he was able to realize this feeling again. The second important thing about John and sauna is his deep, soulful appreciation with the healing nature of sauna with within oneself and also as a community gathering opportunity. Based on John’s experience with the Native American sweat lodge, he is acutely in tune to the adaptation of that practice as a healing and a bonding potential element for a gathering of people. I think this is explained well by John in this interview. I am happy to have lent my hand as a consultant to John’s sauna build. He did it right, on so many levels as you will hear in this episode. I wanted to introduce you to John through my eyes, as a friend talking casually on the sauna bench. Once again Sauna keeps giving and giving. Authentic Sauna draws just so many great people into my life I’m very grateful for this. Please welcome my friend John Breitinger to sauna talk.

Today on the bench we have Daniel Wilson. We met in Minneapolis Minnesota in a very cool kind of way. My wife and I were at a coffee shop and Dan popped up and said: “are you Glenn from Sauna Times?” I felt a bit humbled in a movie star kind of way, but he was very gracious about introducing himself and we talked about what an influence Sauna Times has had on his efforts towards building his own backyard sauna in Minneapolis Minnesota USA. Dan and his roommate did a lot of research and learned how to build their own sauna. They focused on the elements with in the e-book “Sauna Build from Start to Finnish” and so at the coffee shop, we decided “let’s get together and sauna sometime, so this is the result of this intention. Dan brought along his girlfriend Omina, and my wife Julia stepped in with us on the bench. As the four of us gathered, we were joined by Brian Peterson photographer from the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper. Brian, by the way was a previous guest here on Sauna Talk. He is one of the premier Nature photographers alive today. What a pleasure having him back to my backyard sauna. It was -20°F which is pretty damn cold. Brian was out traveling around the Twin Cities area capturing how people were dealing with the bitter cold. This was an assignment for a team of the newspaper photographers. Brian had this realization that most of his photography colleagues from the newspaper would be documenting people in misery, as they trudge along walking their dog, or waiting for the bus to show up. Brian took a much more positive tone to the project. He knew that I probably would be taking a sauna at some point during this polar vortex, so we could’ve worked out a better time for this episode of Sauna Talk with Brian snapping some photos. As Brian shows up, you’ll hear a little chaos but that’s OK. Our chat will venture over towards Wim Hof and we talk about hot and cold and how great it feels to have that kind of extreme temperatures. A lot of this information we share and enjoy. We visit in conversation Dan’s backyard Sauna build project from a millennial wellness perspective: what his sauna means for him, personally, to have his own backyard wood-burning authentic sauna as an enjoyable part of his life, and his roommates life. There is this very cool intertwined way that we connected. Dan was down by the creek in Minneapolis doing some cold plunging, and hooked up with John Pederson who is a recent guest to Sauna Talk. He and John talked and connected, and took a sauna, and now that’s how intertwined Sauna is, especially in Minneapolis Saint Paul. We are blessed to have some really cool photos taken from Brian Peterson on this night and we are able to check them out here on saunatimes.com. So, without further ado, please welcome Daniel Wilson to Sauna Talk.

Kyle Woody is the founder of Jack's Caregiver Coalition, a non-profit organization striving to provide world-class hospitality to men who care cancer caregivers in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area. The mission of Jack's is to improve the way men think, feel and act in their role as cancer caregivers. During our conversation we discussed: The unique needs that men have when serving as caregivers. How Jack's is an event-based group, providing an alternative to the traditional "sit in a circle" support group. These events have included ax throwing, fishing and hunting outings and golf games. The bonding and deep conversations that naturally happen at these events. The long-term goal to grow to a national organization supporting men who serve as caregivers for those affected by more than cancer, including Alzheimers, A.L.S. and Post-Traumatic Stress. We look back on an NFL season dominated by politics and protest, and ask if the player protests have failed and how significant the issue is that prompted Colin Kaepernick's campaign in the first place - police brutality, and why Minneapolis–Saint Paul was such an apposite location for this year's Super Bowl... Killed on Facebook: Why I joined the police after my nephew was killed by an officer As well as the home of this year’s Super Bowl, Minneapolis–Saint Paul was also the home of Philando Castile, whose death, at the hand of a police officer, was streamed on Facebook Live by his girlfriend, who was in the car along with her four-year-old child. We meet his mother Valerie, who tells us about that fateful day and her anger at what has happened since. We also speak to Clarence, Philando’s uncle, who despite everything, has recently joined the police force! He tells us why. Kaepernick in the Community Although he hasn’t played this season, Colin Kaepernick has been plenty busy. He has spent the year donating his time, energy and $1m of his own money to community charities. We visit one of them. The Lower Eastside Girls Club is a community-based project empowering girls and women to achieve their goals and to create the next generation of community-minded leaders. We hear from three teenage girls, who are regulars at the club, about the significance of Colin Kaepernick’s message, profile, and support. Turning A New Page Alan Page is a former Minnesotan Supreme Court Justice, activist, philanthropist - and he just happens to be one of the greatest American footballers to ever play the game. As a defensive tackle, he stood up to enormous physical pressure, while off the field he made a point of speaking his mind. He will be honoured on the field at Sunday's Super Bowl, and showed us around his new exhibition of artifacts from the Jim Crow era. He has some powerful advice to the modern-day athlete activist. Have the Player Protest failed? We hear from black conservative Shelby Steele on why he believes the protests have failed and how the players are misguided and wrong to do it in the first place. The Cost of Speaking out Colin Kaepernick is not the first player to claim to have had his career shortened because of a willingness to speak out on social issues. Chris Kluwe had a highly-successful career with the Minnesota Vikings, until he was released for what he claims were off-field reasons. In 2013, he strongly vocalised his support for same-sex marriage and in 2014 he says he was cut from the Vikings team because of it.

Do you know what's really odd? Numbers you can't divide by two The inventor of the throat lozenge died There will be no coffin at their funeral Are you even reading these?  If you are, this is where the bad jokes I just heard today go, and apparently my son Drake has the same horrible sense of humor I do.  Julie and I were making dinner, I put one of our limes on the floor and asked her if she knew what it was.  I then picked it up and said it was a good "pick up lime"...she obviously walked out of the kitchen - I'm sure it was because the joke was so funny that she was having difficulty catching her breath.  ANYWAY, my son came downstairs and I told him I had just told Julie a hilarious joke, I then promptly set the lime on the floor again, and he promptly picked it up and told me that was the best pick up lime he had ever seen.  We fist bumped (because we're cool and hip), and realized we had made the same terrible joke within 5 minutes, without talking to each other.  If I didn't love my son already, that moment would've sealed the deal, with zest.
