Why bears? What is it about our ursine cousins that prompts such a curious and violent fascination? This week, Morgan and Isabeau turn these questions over anew with the graphic novel My Boyfriend Is a Bear by Pamela Ribon, illustrated by Cat Farris. What does pop culture’s fetishization of bears say about our sexual proclivities? Are bears just apolitical lumberjacks? And what right do we have to anthropomorphize animals in the first place? If Bear by Marian Engel proved too on the nose for its deftness at delineating sexual/power imbalances, cuddle up with this little teddy and start working on that winter belly.
Episode 44Join Dennis, Johnny, and Frances as they discuss My Boyfriend is a Bear, by writer Pamela Ribon and artist Cat Farris. The book was published in 2018 by Oni Press. My Boyfriends is a Bear is the story of a woman dating an American black bear after a series of failed relationships. In this episode the gang discusses if My Boyfriend is a Bear falls under the category of Magical Realism; what are the odds that all black bears are Arcade Fire-loving Hispters in the Los Feliz/Silver Lake area of Los Angeles; yet another episode in which the gang compares Johnny to a character in a book they are reading; the way Frances draws similarities about her relationship to Nora and Bear's relationship; should a sequel be made, the title needs to be “My Girlfriend is a Human”; and last but not least, the storytelling and art of My Boyfriend is a Bear.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/graphicnovelexplorersclub/message See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week, we read My Boyfriend is a Bear, a 2018 graphic novel written by Pamela Ribon and illustrated by Cat Farris.
Angela and Kelly dive into slice of life as a genre--or rather, Kelly goes to great lengths to explain to Angela why slice of life might be at all appealing. Why isn't slice of life a thing in the western market outside web comics, and could a slice of life story ever succeed here? Can Angela's cold, hardened fossil of a heart ever be healed by fluffy slice of life manga? Plus, Kelly goes over some of the recent manga license announcements from the recent Anime Expo. In the wake of Adam West's not-so-recent passing, we felt compelled to do a "thanks for the memories, Adam" episode. But, well, every episode functions as that, so this time, we present the memories of many other bat-fans who grew up watching Adam & co. in syndication (and, in two cases, on Wednesday and Thursday nights in the '60s!). Not coincidentally, our guests are now working in comics themselves.... With one exception: our mom, Joann! Tim interviewed her while visiting home last month, to hear her memories of our Bat-fandom, and how her sewing skills helped to augment that fandom! 11:43 Ken Holtzhouser 14:16 Dale Lazarov, writer and art director of Sticky Graphic Novels Chicago, IL 19:54 Dylan Maconis, Outfoxed Karl Kesel, writer and inker of various Marvel and DC comics Helioscope Studio, Portland, OR 30:50 Cat Farris, The Last Diplomat Helioscope Studio, Portland, OR 37:00 Christopher Jones, artist on many titles including The Batman Strikes, Batman '66 #7 (False Face), Dr. Who Minneapolis, MN 47:07 Stephen Bissette, Swamp Thing, Tyrant, instructor at the Center for Cartoon Studies, White River Junction, VT Craig Fischer, professor at Appalacian State University, Boone, NC occasional writer for The Comics Journal Interviewed at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum, Columbus, OH 1:26:28 Joann Young (our mom!)
