Another weekend of Anime Expo has come and gone, and with it came a LOT of things from all corners, a true cornucopia of styles for just about everyone: take your pick, be it green yuri with Nirvana or nice boats with School Days... yes, really, as well as plenty of manga to come later this year and next year, TRIGGER leading us on with the fourth Imaishi/Nakashima project coming soon, AnimEigo giving everyone an appetizer plate before Discotek takes over Otakon, a first look at the new Star Wars Visions project, and some info on Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 as was always planned (ahem ahem) and the reveal of more STEEL BALL RUN coming in the fall so everyone can stop breathing down Netflix's necks. (They haven't, they're still asking for more.) She had an health ailment earlier this year that was serious enough for her to stop recording episodes of Detective Conan in February. The long-time voice of Ran and her experience in the voice acting industry was a huge loss, and from her Conan castmates and staff to other talents across different industries, her impact was notable and will be sorely missed. Akemi Okamura, who voiced the character since March 14 while Yamazaki was undergoing medical treatment, will now take over the role of Ran moving forward. In this episode, we welcome Melanie Kohnen, an Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Media Studies for Lewis & Clark College, and Billy Austin Tringali, an Instruction Librarian at the Indiana University Indianapolis and the founder and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Anime and Manga Studies (JAMS), to discuss the culture and function of pop-culture conventions (“cons”). Melanie shares her research on the encroaching influence of media companies on spaces such as San Diego Comic-Con, especially as they literally extend their promotions to outside of the convention center. Meanwhile, Billy speaks about his work running the annual JAMS@AX Symposium at Anime Expo and his own research regarding animanga content. This conversation examines the intersection of academia and non-academic spaces, like fan events, and how media businesses build relationships with their audiences. Melanie and Billy explore how both academics and con-goers can experience conventions as fans and build a sense of community at these pop-culture events. They offer various modes of experiencing conventions and ways of accessing fans as part of larger promotional content. From theatrical rollouts in the United States and around the world to the 17-million-subscriber-strong Crunchyroll streaming service to the sold-out Anime Expo in Los Angeles earlier this month, it's an enormous segment of the market that holds a deep attachment to younger audiences.
