Beloved author Susan Orlean discusses her new book Joyride, a masterful memoir of finding her creative calling and purpose that invites us to approach life with wonder, curiosity, and an irrepressible sense of delight. Orlean is interviewed by journalist Chris Borrelli. This conversation originally took place October 24, 2025 and was recorded live at the American Writers Museum. We hope you enjoy entering the Mind of a Writer. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HUB More about Joyride: "The story of my life is the story of my stories," writes Susan Orlean in this extraordinary, era-defining memoir from one of the greatest practitioners of narrative nonfiction of our time. Joyride is a magic carpet ride through Orlean's life and career, where every day is an opportunity for discovery and every moment holds the potential for wonder. Throughout her storied career, her curiosity draws her to explore the most ordinary and extraordinary of places, from going deep inside the head of a regular ten-year-old boy for a legendary profile ("The American Man Age Ten") to reporting on a woman who owns twenty-seven tigers, from capturing the routine magic of Saturday night to climbing Mt. Fuji. Not only does Orlean's account of a writing life offer a trove of indispensable gleanings for writers, it's also an essential and practical guide to embracing any creative path. She takes us through her process of dreaming up ideas, managing deadlines, connecting with sources, chasing every possible lead, confronting writer's block and self-doubt, and crafting the perfect lede—a Susan specialty. While Orlean has always written her way into other people's lives in order to understand the human experience, Joyride is her most personal book ever—a searching journey through finding her feet as a journalist, recovering from the excruciating collapse of her first marriage, falling head-over-heels in love again, becoming a mother while mourning the decline of her own mother, sojourning to Hollywood for films based on her work including Adaptation and Blue Crush, and confronting mortality. Joyride is also a time machine to a bygone era of journalism, from Orlean's bright start in the golden age of alt-weeklies to her career-making days working alongside icons such as Robert Gottlieb, Tina Brown, David Remnick, Anna Wintour, Sonny Mehta, and Jonathan Karp—forces who shaped the media industry as we know it today. Infused with Orlean's signature warmth and wit, Joyride is a must-read for anyone who hungers to start, build, and sustain a creative life. Orlean inspires us to seek out daily inspiration and rediscover the marvels that surround us. SUSAN ORLEAN has been a staff writer at The New Yorker since 1992. She is the New York Times bestselling author of seven books, including The Library Book, Rin Tin Tin, Saturday Night, and The Orchid Thief, which was made into the Academy Award–winning film Adaptation. She lives with her family and her animals in Los Angeles and may be reached at SusanOrlean.com and on Substack at SusanOrlean.Substack.com. CHRIS BORRELLI is a longtime features writer at the Chicago Tribune and a Nieman fellow at Harvard University. His subjects have included endangered species and Godzilla and hand dryer technology and low-wage restaurant work and prop warehouses and accordion-shop owners and comedy writers and existential threat. He's a militant Rhode Islander and a Chicago resident.

In this powerful message from Guest Pastor Charles Nieman, we dive into Revelation 1 and discover God's design for two offices that were created to work together: kings and priests.Kings – Men and women of influence, called to provide provision for the vision.Priests – Called to cast vision that blesses not just ourselves, but others. When kings and priests work together, God's kingdom moves forward. This message unpacks how we are all called to live Christ-centered lives… not career-centered or wealth-centered lives. Every one of us has a valuable purpose, a mission, and a house to build that stands for something eternal.

Much has been written about political polarisation in the United States, but no one has examined it through the lens of recent U.S. history. There is nothing deterministic about how we became polarised, and it happened more recently than many think. To fully understand the problem, we must take the long view, the perspective provided by history, with its attention to change over time and the role of contingency. That's what The Path to Paralysis does. The book illuminates the broad forces that have shaped and reshaped American society and politics since the mid-1960s: the shift from an industrial to an information economy that produced economic inequality not seen since the 1920s; dramatic, unsettling changes in gender and sexuality; sharp conflict between those who embrace the culture of personal freedom that was a legacy of the 1960s and politically mobilised White evangelicals; persistent racial discord that transformed Southern politics and shattered the New Deal coalition; and dramatic changes in communication that transformed broadcasting into narrowcasting, creating alternate news and truths. These developments had their origin in the late 1960s and have generated sharp political conflict for six decades. But they didn't overwhelm the system until the 21st century. Ronald Reagan moved American politics to the right, but Republicans and Democrats forged compromise on issues as diverse as economic policy, civil rights, and immigration. After the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush tacked to the centre and sought bipartisan solutions to issues like welfare, education and immigration. Sharp conflict and governance were compatible. The tipping point was the election of the nation's first Black president and the economic collapse he inherited. Fault lines of religion, region, gender, sexual orientation, class, education and, especially, race widened. People chose sides and identified enemies, the number of true swing voters shrunk, fewer states and congressional districts were competitive, the two major parties became more monolithic, and appeals to the base drove strategy and what passed for policy. It was an atmosphere that provided fertile ground for a demagogue whose norm-busting appeals to White grievance and Christian Nationalism, as well as to regional and class resentment strengthened his appeal to an angry base and threatened the peaceful transition of power, the bedrock of American democracy for more than two centuries. Coaching Highlights – Conversations That MatterThrown into coaching—and luckily, stuck the landing.Mastering the power of the pause—because silence speaks volumes.Blending internal and external coaching like a fine espresso blend. That “jarring” feeling when you hold back... and let silence do its thing.Asking, “What was this experience like for you?” (Yes, that's the gold.)No pressure, no expectations—just an invitation.Asking the "Best Boss / Worst Boss" question—watch clarity unfold.Helping clients slide into the driver's seat of their own lives.Staying in coaching mode even when the formal session ends.Because honestly, the world needs fewer “Talk Shows” and more “Listen Shows.”That magical moment when coaching just clicks.Showing up aware, curious, and kind (not a bad trifecta).Embracing the give-to-get exchange—let go to grow.

Joachim Garraud on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 8/28/24   After seven years at the Conservatoire de Nantes (Nantes' classical music conservatory), Joachim Garraud, a musician with a passion for technology, developed his musical and artistic skills to become one of France's most influential producers in the early 2000s. He has collaborated with David Bowie, Kylie Minogue, Beyoncé, OMD, Deep Dish, Eurythmics, Paul Johnson, Cassius, Cerrone, Moby and Vitalic. He has been a close collaborator to Bob Sinclar and Jean-Michel Jarre in their musical projects for over 20 years, and has co-composed and co-produced David Guetta's hits such as "Just A Little More Love", "Love Don't Let Me Go", "Love is Gone" and "The World is Mine". Joachim, nominated for a Grammy Award in the "Best Remix" category, was the first French artist to use Pro-Tools, a leading music production software back in 1992. His Paris recording studio became one of the main meeting points of the influential musical movement known as "French Touch", of Daft Punk, Cassius, and Air fame. In addition to his producer's hat, Joachim Garraud has won several awards for his live performances at festivals around the world, including Coachella, Love Parade, Technoparade, Lollapalooza, Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival and Exit Festival. Joachim developed stage concepts ranging from the use of live musical instruments (he was the first DJ to play the Keytar) to the development of techniques linking video and live show (the first DJ to use synchronized video or 3D visual elements) to the development of mixing tools such as the Pioneer DJM-800, which became a standard in the deejaying industry. Today, Joachim Garraud has produced nearly 300 titles and played close to 900 shows on 5 continents. www.joachimgarraud.com   About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience. Slantooth on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 8/5/24 About Slantooth - Upon stumbling on a Metalheadz promo tape in 1996, Slantooth's obsession with drum & bass, technic 1200's, and vinyl records has never wavered even to present day. Scouring every record store that the West Coast had to offer on a weekly basis, not to mention working at the infamous Concepts Records with his drum and bass family Nitsuj and Zacharia(360 BPM Crew), along with weekly mail orders from Compound Records San Francisco, Slantooth's selection and tastes go deep into the heart of drum & bass.  Becoming the buyer/owner of Compound Records Seattle Slantooth continued to build his love of drum & bass, an even sharper ear for the mix, and an arsenal of vinyl beats. Along being one of the first residents of Drum & Bass Tuesday's (The Baltic Room Seattle along with the 360BPM crew and Alo), and Rush Hour Seattle at The War Room, Slantooth has warmed the decks for many legendary DJ/producers such as Goldie, Jumping Jack Frost, Dillinja & LemonD, Fierce & Rhyme Tyme, Ed Rush & Optical, Spirit, Usual Suspects, and many more.  Slantooth's original production releases with our friends over at Division Bass Digital UK can be heard here on the site, and on all major music streaming formats. The main goals for Slantooth: “Ride the pitch, meaning give you the cleanest mixes possible while showcasing the best of drum and bass”.  “Get in the studio”. “Bring ALL spectrums of drum & bass to the masses About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience. Magitman on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 7/29/24 About Magitman - Igal Magitman has proven that even in the increasingly saturated and competitive scene, one can still rise to shine above the rest with enough stamina and raw talent. From the sleeves of labels like 1605, Definitive Recordings, Global Underground, Spinnin Records, Twisted Frequency, Renaissance Toolr oom and so on. To the decks of the biggest DJs worldwide, Magitman has reached the vaulted status of established artist that so many aspiring producers strive to achieve-his music has been licensed for use in Sony PlayStation games. Now with numerous Top 100 best-sellers under his belt along with his mix compilations and artist album, Magitman continues to raise his profile and status as a producer in the industry. As his music has spread around the globe, so has the demand for his own dynamic and energetic DJ performances. A frequent flier already with tens of thousands of miles under his wing, Magitman has played some of the world's best events and clubs in locations from Shanghai, thru Europe, to Mexico & Brazil. Stay tuned for this guy as he never stops surprising fans. _______________________________ One of the global dance scene's biggest surprises of the last 18 months comes in the form of the absolute dance floor devastation brought about by the Israeli progressive duo, Brisker and Magitman. In every corner of the globe, this versatile pair have impacted the very direction of dance music, with earthshaking productions influenced by breaks, house, trance and progressive, and support from a virtual "who's who" of the DJ elite. Since their first release in 2006, Magitman and Brisker Roman have had countless releases and remixes, appearing on such influential and stalwart labels as Baroque, AVA, Audio therapy, SOG, Babylon, Method, Twisted Frequency and Dissident. Their music has been sought out by Sony for use in Playstation games, and by Hernan Cattaneo for inclusion on his Renaissance Compilation, "Sequential".  As their music has spread around the globe, so has the demand for their own dynamic and energetic DJ performances; the lads have already logged tens of thousands of miles in the air and played some of the world's best events and clubs in locations from Hong Kong to Brazil and everywhere in between and released their first mix-comp, entitled "Inception". With their momentum building to a fever pitch, 2009 looks set to be the year that the rest of the world discovers Brisker and Magitman, cementing their place among the best the world has to offer. Spring will see the release of their first full-length artist album, along with numerous EP, single releases and remixes. Even more intense touring is sure to follow, with a first North American jaunt already in the works, as well as return visits to East Asia, Europe and South America. If you hear a big sound booming from a pair of decks anywhere in the world, rest assured that the progressive duo from Israel was somewhere in the mix. And if you are fortunate enough, it will be Brisker and Magitman themselves behind those decks, giving new intensity to the term "Peak Hour". Stay tuned- Brisker and Magitman are on the move. TofuMeowMeow on the Rooftop Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 7/20/24 About TofuMeowMeow - The streets know her as Tia Hoang, the scratches on turntables know her as Dj TofuMeowMeow. Birthed in the refugee camps of Galang Island Indonesia with umbilical cord extended to her motherland of Hue, Vietnam, she journeyed West making Seattle home and now to your living room and festival speakers. Like a tumbleweed vacuum she collected enough life experiences that would need another lifetime to fully retell. Her eclectic lifestyle extends to the music she plays, brewing cups of melodic matcha from Electro, House, Techno, Trance, Dubstep, Trap and Hip Hop. At 16 her heart imploded from experiencing the love within the dance community; her feet callused from being a menace to these dance floors since. With close to two decades of being in the dance scene, her whole being has been primed to pursue her soul's mission of uniting people through music, food and art. She now pounces on stage as DJ TofuMeowMeow serving humans with succulent beats and healing frequencies from her crystal sound bowl that makes the body move and purr like a Maine Coon on catnip and peaceful like an insomniac that found restful sleep by being awake in a disco dreamland.
