What do LGBTQ+ young people actually experience in PE and sport — and what are they telling us about why they disengage? In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Craig Nieman and Dr. Sara Flory from the University of South Florida to discuss their groundbreaking mixed-methods study, "LGBTQ+ Youth Perceptions of Barriers to Physical Activity in Sport," published in Sport Education and Society (March 2026).Rather than relying on adult recollections or teacher perceptions, Nieman and Flory went directly to LGBTQ+ youth themselves — at Camp Rainbow, an inclusive summer camp in a conservatively legislated southeastern state. What they found should reshape how every PE teacher, administrator, and professional organization thinks about their work.In this episode, we cover:How three years of relationship-building made an 87% participation rate possible — and what that model means for researchers working with marginalized communitiesWhy community mapping (drawing safe and unsafe spaces) became an unexpectedly powerful research tool — and almost cathartic for participantsThe two dominant barriers LGBTQ+ youth identified: surveillance and body dysphoria during physical activity, and being stuck in a gender binary that leaves no safe optionThe student who was failing PE — not because of ability, but because they refused to change clothes in a hostile locker roomHow accommodations designed for LGBTQ+ students benefit all students (the curb-cut principle in PE)Small, immediate changes teachers can make right now — starting with the words they useWhat the removal of SHAPE America's transgender inclusion resources signals to teachers on the groundA reminder of the real stakes: one participant in the study linked exclusion from a recreational running group to suicidal ideationGuests:Dr. Craig Nieman, University of South FloridaDr. Sara Flory, University of South FloridaFull CitationNieman, C. eDreaming of Ireland but not sure where to start? We sit down with Lynne Nieman from Wander Your Way to map a smarter route: skip the bottlenecks, use Shannon as your launchpad, and find the coastal corners where the country's character runs deepest. We talk through the big calls travelers face—Dublin for a day or two, or straight to the west; Ring of Kerry by bus, or quieter peninsulas that pack more into fewer miles; Blarney Stone bragging rights, or ancient stone circles without the lines.Lynne helps us build an itinerary that actually breathes. Kenmare replaces Killarney as a balanced base for lakes and high peaks in Ireland's oldest national park. West Cork adds softer shorelines, Mizen Head's lighthouse walks, and food that proves Ireland's kitchen is thriving. We spotlight Kinsale's Charles Fort, colorful small towns, and the kind of pub nights where fiddles trade leads while your Guinness settles. Then we head north to Donegal—wild, remote, and wildly underrated—for dune-backed beaches, cliffy headlands, and hikes in Glenveagh's stark beauty. We also keep it practical: weather you can count on changing, layers you'll be glad you packed, and honest advice on driving the left side or hiring a driver-guide for stories and peace of mind. We touch on border realities post-Brexit, easy crossings into Northern Ireland, and where to chase waves, from beginner-friendly Lahinch to Sligo's surf scene. Along the way, we dismantle the “bad food” myth with fresh seafood, local lamb, and dairy that tastes like the fields it came from.If this guide helps you plan your route, follow the show, leave a quick rating, and share it with a friend who keeps saying Ireland is on their list. Female Leaders Podcast

In this episode, we are joined by Dr. David Nieman, Professor in the department of biology at Appalachian State University and director of the Human Performance Laboratory. A pioneer in exercise immunology with decades of research, he discovered why marathon runners get sick after races and how to prevent it. Vikas & Dr. Nieman discussed in detail about the immune system's response to heavy training, why marathons can suppress immunity, optimal fueling strategies, and how to find your training sweet spot without falling off the overtraining cliff. Here are some key takeaways:Marathon running temporarily crashes your immune system - After a marathon, your odds of getting sick are 2-6 times higher for 1-2 weeks. The stress depletes glycogen, spikes cortisol, and creates an "open window" for viruses.Carbohydrate is your immune system's fuel - Taking in carbs before, during, and after long runs reduces inflammation by 40%. Half marathons are the safe distance - Studies show minimal immune suppression after half marathons. It's when you push beyond 90 minutes at race pace that glycogen depletion triggers immune dysfunction.Blueberries are nature's immune support - Eating a cup daily for two weeks before intense training lets polyphenols accumulate, reducing inflammation and boosting immune function.Never run through a fever - Exercising with systemic illness (fever, body aches) can trigger chronic fatigue syndrome. Take enough rest till you fully recover.Find your sweet spot - Persistent fatigue, irritability, and requiring naps are signs you're pushing too hard. Some athletes push too far and fall into a chronic fatigue state that ruins their lives for years.About Vikas Singh:Vikas Singh, an MBA from Chicago Booth, worked at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, APGlobale, and Reliance before coming up with the idea of democratizing fitness knowledge and helping beginners get on a fitness journey. Fleet Management Expertise and Optimization with Jeff Nieman In this episode, I sit down with Jeff Nieman, Chief Operating Officer at Merchants Fleet, to explore the evolving world of fleet management and logistics. With more than two decades of experience in the industry, including 20 years at Hertz Corporation, Jeff shares insights into the complexity of managing fleets across industries and the strategies organizations can use to optimize operations, cut costs, and maximize vehicle utilization—especially during times of economic disruption. Optimizing Fleet Management for Efficiency Jeff and I unpack the importance of efficient fleet management and the logistics behind moving goods and people. He explains how Merchants' product FleetShare helps companies solve utilization challenges by allowing shared vehicle access across business units. This approach not only improves efficiency but also reduces waste. Data analysis plays a key role in determining the right number of vehicles, while their digital platform provides businesses with seamless self-service vehicle access. Fleet-Sharing Innovation We dive into Merchants' groundbreaking fleet-sharing platform, designed to let businesses rent vehicles for short periods and even share them across companies during peak demand. This innovation reduces costs, generates revenue, and addresses common pain points like underutilized vehicles and storage expenses. Jeff also explains how this approach could support the transition to electric vehicles by helping organizations coordinate usage and overcome range limitations. The Role of AI in Logistics Our conversation also touches on the role of AI in fleet management and logistics. In this powerful message from Guest Pastor Charles Nieman, we dive into Revelation 1 and discover God's design for two offices that were created to work together: kings and priests.Kings – Men and women of influence, called to provide provision for the vision.Priests – Called to cast vision that blesses not just ourselves, but others. When kings and priests work together, God's kingdom moves forward. This message unpacks how we are all called to live Christ-centered lives… not career-centered or wealth-centered lives. Every one of us has a valuable purpose, a mission, and a house to build that stands for something eternal.

Much has been written about political polarisation in the United States, but no one has examined it through the lens of recent U.S. history. There is nothing deterministic about how we became polarised, and it happened more recently than many think. To fully understand the problem, we must take the long view, the perspective provided by history, with its attention to change over time and the role of contingency. That's what The Path to Paralysis does. The book illuminates the broad forces that have shaped and reshaped American society and politics since the mid-1960s: the shift from an industrial to an information economy that produced economic inequality not seen since the 1920s; dramatic, unsettling changes in gender and sexuality; sharp conflict between those who embrace the culture of personal freedom that was a legacy of the 1960s and politically mobilised White evangelicals; persistent racial discord that transformed Southern politics and shattered the New Deal coalition; and dramatic changes in communication that transformed broadcasting into narrowcasting, creating alternate news and truths. These developments had their origin in the late 1960s and have generated sharp political conflict for six decades. But they didn't overwhelm the system until the 21st century. Ronald Reagan moved American politics to the right, but Republicans and Democrats forged compromise on issues as diverse as economic policy, civil rights, and immigration. After the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush tacked to the centre and sought bipartisan solutions to issues like welfare, education and immigration. Sharp conflict and governance were compatible. The tipping point was the election of the nation's first Black president and the economic collapse he inherited. Fault lines of religion, region, gender, sexual orientation, class, education and, especially, race widened. People chose sides and identified enemies, the number of true swing voters shrunk, fewer states and congressional districts were competitive, the two major parties became more monolithic, and appeals to the base drove strategy and what passed for policy. It was an atmosphere that provided fertile ground for a demagogue whose norm-busting appeals to White grievance and Christian Nationalism, as well as to regional and class resentment strengthened his appeal to an angry base and threatened the peaceful transition of power, the bedrock of American democracy for more than two centuries. Joachim Garraud on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 8/28/24   After seven years at the Conservatoire de Nantes (Nantes' classical music conservatory), Joachim Garraud, a musician with a passion for technology, developed his musical and artistic skills to become one of France's most influential producers in the early 2000s. He has collaborated with David Bowie, Kylie Minogue, Beyoncé, OMD, Deep Dish, Eurythmics, Paul Johnson, Cassius, Cerrone, Moby and Vitalic. He has been a close collaborator to Bob Sinclar and Jean-Michel Jarre in their musical projects for over 20 years, and has co-composed and co-produced David Guetta's hits such as "Just A Little More Love", "Love Don't Let Me Go", "Love is Gone" and "The World is Mine". Joachim, nominated for a Grammy Award in the "Best Remix" category, was the first French artist to use Pro-Tools, a leading music production software back in 1992. His Paris recording studio became one of the main meeting points of the influential musical movement known as "French Touch", of Daft Punk, Cassius, and Air fame. In addition to his producer's hat, Joachim Garraud has won several awards for his live performances at festivals around the world, including Coachella, Love Parade, Technoparade, Lollapalooza, Tomorrowland, Ultra Music Festival and Exit Festival. Joachim developed stage concepts ranging from the use of live musical instruments (he was the first DJ to play the Keytar) to the development of techniques linking video and live show (the first DJ to use synchronized video or 3D visual elements) to the development of mixing tools such as the Pioneer DJM-800, which became a standard in the deejaying industry. Today, Joachim Garraud has produced nearly 300 titles and played close to 900 shows on 5 continents. www.joachimgarraud.com   About The DJ Sessions - “The DJ Sessions” is a Twitch/Mixcloud "Featured Partner” live streaming/podcast series featuring electronic music DJ's/Producers via live mixes/interviews and streamed/distributed to a global audience.
