Are you ever surprised when God answers prayers? Should we pray even if we doubt God will answer? How do emotions play into doubt? In this episode, Emma Dotter explores how the early church was surprised by God answering their prayers for Peter to be freed from prison, how that applies to our prayer lives today, and how God doesn't rely on our emotional stability to answer prayers. // RELATED JOIN THE JOURNEY EPISODES:  S4:268 Acts 12-14 (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s4-268-acts-12-14/id1600151923?i=1000735847137)  // WHAT IS JOIN THE JOURNEY? Join The Journey is a realistic daily Bible reading plan that helps followers of Jesus at Watermark Community Church and beyond enjoy abiding in Jesus together. And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested. (1 Chronicles 4:9-10) *1/ Jabez - the man. 2/ Who he called upon - The God of Israel. 3/ What he prayer for.* **Sermon summary:** The sermon centers on Jabez's prayer in 1 Chronicles 4:9–10 as a profound example of faith, dependence, and divine response, highlighting how a man named for sorrow became a model of a praying soul whose life was defined not by his past but by his intimate relationship with the God of Israel. It emphasizes that true prayer arises from a deep awareness of God's character—revealed through Israel's history—as the one who blesses, enlarges, sustains, and protects, and who alone can grant spiritual transformation and eternal security. The fourfold request—blessing, enlarged coast, divine presence, and deliverance from evil—reflects a heart oriented toward God's glory, not merely personal gain, and illustrates how genuine faith seeks not only provision but spiritual growth, sanctification, and the assurance of God's sustaining hand. Ultimately, the story of Jabez points to the redemptive work of Christ, where sorrow leads to blessing, and prayer becomes the means by which God's people are drawn into His presence and transformed by His grace.

In our last edition before the World Cup break, Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes are joined by the distinguished author and journalist Duncan Hamilton.  Duncan has written almost twenty books on various aspects of football and cricket including three William Sports Book of the Year winners.  Among those twenty are biographies of George Best, Harold Larwood and Neville Cardus, a fascinating portrait of Brian Clough called Provided You Don't Kiss Me and his latest Answered Prayers about Alf Ramsey and the winning of the World Cup.  You would think that there was nothing left to say about 1966 but by concentrating on the rather tortured character of Alf Ramsey, Duncan makes us relive that whole experience with fresh insight.  In particular Duncan promotes the importance in Alf's life of the Spurs manager Arthur Rowe, the now almost forgotten manager of the Tottenham Hotspur side that won the League Championship in the 1950-51 season.  His tactics came to be called “push and run” and in Alf Ramsey, Rowe found a willing student.  To discover all sorts of fascinating details about Alf and the 1966 World Cup triumph download the latest podcast. And just to re-iterate: Colin, Jon and their indefatigable producer, Paul, are arriving at the World Cup like all the players – utterly knackered.  In order to recharge the batteries, they will have a close season where they will not be found drunk and disorderly in a nightclub in Ibiza. Instead, they will be back bright eyed and bushy-tailed for the new season towards the end of August.  If you really can't wait till then and you want to see them all in operation you will be able to find them at the Nevill Holt Festival in the glorious Leicestershire countryside near Market Harborough at 4.45pm on Saturday 13 June.   Learn more about your ad choices. We've spent three months talking about prayer, and this final episode is where all of it comes to life. A few months ago, Jesse, our social media coordinator at Every Woman a Theologian, reached out to our community and asked them to share how God has been moving in their prayer lives. What came back left me emotional. Story after story of a personal, specific, loving God who hears and answers prayer. Sometimes with a yes, sometimes with a no, and sometimes in ways that are even more beautiful than what was asked for. You'll hear testimonies of answered prayers through miscarriage and grief, infertility and miraculous pregnancies, job searches, family conflict, postpartum anxiety, healing, and so much more. I want to be honest with you—not all of these are happy endings. Some of the most powerful testimonies in this episode come from women holding the tension between grief and gratitude. But all of them point to a God who sees, who cares, and who answers specifically. If your faith has been feeling thin or your prayers feel like they're hitting the ceiling, I hope these stories remind you that our God is not distant. Today, I want to witness to you the power of prayer. I am very grateful because my parents are devout Catholics. They both grew up in very Catholic homes, and their parents passed down to them the importance of our faith. They both went to Catholic schools growing up. Sometimes I wish that I lived back when they lived, and it seems like being Catholic was easier. Although I am not sure it was easier. Sometimes I think that is just what we tell ourselves to make ourselves feel better. My mom and dad started dating when they were in High School. My parents, while in High School, used to meet at 5 or 6 in the morning so they could go to daily mass together. Nowadays, kids don't even want to go to mass on Sunday morning. They don't want to be up early on a school day, and they certainly don't want to be in mass before school. Maybe the same was true back then. Maybe my parents were different from all those around them. Maybe it wasn't “cool” to go to daily mass back then, and yet they wanted to. Maybe they didn't want to be at mass necessarily, maybe they just wanted to see each other, and that was the only way they could. I honestly don't know, although I should ask them. The fact that they were waking up early to go to mass together before school is an answered prayer. Actually, it is probably many answered prayers. It is probably the answer to the prayer, please let me child know you. It is probably the answer to the prayer, please let my child meet a spouse who is Catholic. An answer to, please let my child meet someone who knows the Lord like they do. I know my grandparents prayed a lot for my parents. and I can see the effects of those prayers, even after my grandparents have gone to meet Jesus. I am sure they are still praying for our family. I am sure they are up in heaven praying blessings and prayers of protection over us as we speak. Isn't that awesome to think about? When our loved ones die, they don't stop praying for us. Actually, their prayers probably increase because they don't have the worldly distractions that we have here on earth. They can devote all their time to praising God and praying for their loved ones left here on Earth. The reason I say I can see the results of their prayers is that my parents found each other. These days it is becoming increasingly rare to find a couple where both are Catholic. And even if you are lucky enough to find a Catholic spouse, it is rare that you are both as excited about the faith as my parents. My mom is the oldest of 10 children, ranging from 80 years old down to about 60 or so. All of my mom's siblings are alive to this day. It is not as if they have all had easy lives. It is not that they have never been sick; they have, and yet they are all still alive and well. That is the answer to so many prayers that probably seemed unanswered at the time. My mom and several of her siblings have had skin cancer, and yet through it all, God has protected them. That is so many answered prayers! My parents had 11 children. When they got married, they wanted to have 12 children, a whole dozen. The reason for this is that my dad only had one brother, and they didn't get to play together too much when they were growing up. My dad's house was always so quiet, and there wasn't much going on. However, when he went to my mom's house, it was the opposite. It was never quiet, and there was always something going on. So, they decided to replicate that in their house and have a dozen kids. The fact that I have 10 brothers and sisters is another answer to prayers. Actually, probably several answered prayers as my parents said if they were unable to conceive, they would say a novena, and at the end of it, she would be pregnant. My mom and dad are both in their early 80's and are doing great! They are more active than most of their kids are, as they go out square and round dancing three nights a week. They are very involved in the church and run the prayer group there. My mom does the daughters of Isabella at the state level. My dad is the chaplain for the Knights of Columbus and another organization in town. They are healthy enough to remain busy, and I know that is the answer to many prayers. Another way I can see so many answered prayers is the fact that my siblings and I are all alive and well. It is not uncommon for large families to lose some of their siblings along the way. It is not uncommon in any size family, actually. However, all my siblings are doing great. I will say we have some close calls. My sister had a mysterious illness when she was younger, and we almost lost her. My brother was pulled through a big machine that makes chicken wire. We definitely could have lost him then. There have been a few suicide attempts in our family. There have been really bad car accidents. My sister had open heart surgery in the 8th grade. One of my brothers jumped out of a plane with the army and hit his head on the side of the plane on his way down.  There have been plenty of opportunities when things could have ended very differently, and they didn't, and I am so thankful for all those answered prayers of protection and healing. I say all of this to let you know that your prayers are being answered. It is important that you continue to pray, even when you don't see the results you want. I don't know if my grandparents knew how important their prayers were. I don't know if they got to see the fruit of their prayers while they were still here on earth. I don't know if you will always see the fruit of your prayers either. Sometimes, we don't recognize the fruit of our prayers. For instance, when Tony lost his job in the military, it didn't look like an answered prayer. It looked like God had abandoned him. Yet for at least five years before he lost his job, he had been searching for a government job that was not in the military, and nothing was working out. It was a catch-22 because you got military preference once you were out of the military, but he didn't want to get out of the military until he had another job. Well, God took care of all of that when he had Tony leave the military and then found him a higher-paying civilian job at a military base that he loved so much. It was definitely years of answered prayers, and yet it really didn't look like it. Our prayers matter. Keep praying for your kids to come back to the church, even if you don't see any results. Keep praying they meet someone who loves Jesus. Or if they are already married to someone who doesn't pray for that person's conversion. Our prayers are so powerful. God has told us in our prayer group that we, the world, don't understand how powerful our prayers are. Don't give up. Keep praying, even when you don't see results. I bet if you sat down and looked back over your life, you would also see so many answered prayers. God is good, and He does answer our prayers. MY Devotional: Daily Encouragement from Leading The Way

As we continue learning from Daniel's prayers, Dr. Michael Youssef reminds us that we are completely reliant on God's love and forgiveness—and that Daniel's approach is a blueprint for praying with spiritual power. First, appeal for mercy. Daniel doesn't present God with reasons he deserves an answer. Instead, he pleads on the basis of God's covenant character: “We do not make requests… because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy” (Daniel 9:16–18). Daniel's driving concern wasn't comfort, success, or ease—it was the glory of God. This devotional calls you to pray the same way: acknowledge you don't deserve God's blessings, yet trust Him because He is merciful and faithful. Second, petition for God to act. Daniel prays with urgency and clarity: “Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act!” (Daniel 9:19). His requests aren't selfish—they're aimed at God being honored and His Name being vindicated. Dr. Youssef encourages believers to pray boldly for God to move in ways that most clearly display that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. If you've been hesitant to pray specifically or feel unworthy to ask for God's intervention, this devotional will help you recover the right posture: humility before God, confidence in His mercy, and God-centered petitions that seek His highest glory. Prayer: God, as I humble myself before You, I realize that I don't deserve Your blessings, but I am grateful that You are a merciful God. Apart from You, I am nothing. God, I pray that You would take action, showing Yourself strong, so that You would receive all praise and glory. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. Scripture Focus: “Turn to me and have mercy on me, as you always do to those who love your name” (Psalm 119:132). Learn more in Dr. Michael A. MY Devotional: Daily Encouragement from Leading The Way

Daniel didn't become courageous in the lions' den overnight. Long before he stood firm before kings, he first bent the knee in secret—day after day, seeking the Lord when no one was watching. In today's episode of the MY Devotional Podcast, Dr. Michael Youssef traces Daniel's life from exile in Babylon to his unwavering refusal to stop praying, reminding us: whenever you see someone standing strong for God, you'll find they first learned to kneel. Dr. Youssef highlights Daniel's remarkable prayer in Daniel 9, offered after nearly seventy years of exile. It's a prayer marked by confession, intercession, and petition—and it flows from a man anchored in God's promises. Daniel trusted the Lord who had already revealed His plan through prophets and who moves history according to His timetable—sending His people home precisely as promised, and later sending the Messiah at the appointed time. This devotional will encourage you to: prioritize prayer over panic, rely on God's promises when the future feels uncertain, and remember that prayer makes us partners in God's unfolding plan. Prayer: Thank You, Father, for the honor of serving Your Kingdom through prayer and obedience. Help me to be faithful. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.  Scripture Focus: “Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act! For your sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name” (Daniel 9:19).  *This devotional adapted from Life-Changing Prayers by Michael Youssef © 2018. MY Devotional: Daily Encouragement from Leading The Way

“What should I do next?” is one of the most common questions believers bring to God—and in today's MY Devotional, Dr. Michael Youssef takes you to Genesis 24, where Scripture records the first prayer offered in the same way we pray today. Abraham's trusted servant Eliezer is sent on a mission that will shape the covenant line: find a wife for Isaac. Along the journey, he stops and prays a clear, specific prayer for guidance (Genesis 24:12–14)—and God answers before he finishes praying (Genesis 24:15). Dr. Youssef highlights why this matters for your decision-making: Specific prayers aren't unspiritual—God often honors clear, faith-filled requests. Flexibility matters—God may answer differently than expected, but never outside His wisdom. Prayer doesn't replace action—Eliezer prays and keeps moving, watching, and obeying. The takeaway is simple and challenging: faithful prayer + unconditional obedience = answered prayer. If you're seeking guidance for a major decision, this episode will help you pray with clarity, walk with confidence, and discern God's direction as He leads. Prayer: Lord, thank You that I can bring my specific requests to You and trust that You hear and answer them in Your perfect wisdom and timing. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.  “Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you” (Psalm 9:10). *This devotional is adapted from Life-Changing Prayers by Michael Youssef © 2018. Your Crumbs Are Someone's Answered Prayer

While feeding birds outside Jimmy's Italian Food Store, I realized the last few crumbs I almost threw away were actually a meal for those birds, and that moment hit me like a freight train. So many of us are discarding our greatest gifts because we've convinced ourselves they don't matter. Your skill, your energy, your discipline, your listening ear, those aren't crumbs to the people who need them most. Key Takeaways What feels like scraps to you can be life-changing to someone else. You cannot be the judge of what other people need from you, so stop deciding your gifts aren't valuable enough to share. The bar is lower than you think, and that should give you confidence, not arrogance. Sometimes it is not your words or your expertise that someone needs, it is simply your presence and your willingness to listen. You cannot leave this earth on empty if you keep throwing away the very things you were meant to give. Action Steps Look in the mirror and identify at least one skill, trait, or quality you have been dismissing as "nothing special" and write it down today. Ask three people in your life what they value most about you and compare their answers to what you think your strengths are. Find one person this week who could benefit from that overlooked gift, whether it is your encouragement, your discipline, your energy, or simply your ear, and give it freely without holding back. Notable Quote Your crumbs are somebody else's answered prayer, somebody else's blessing, what somebody needs today. Be sure you give it to them.

What if the ending you've been grieving was actually the answer to a prayer you forgot you prayed?I'm taking three familiar moments from my own story — and looking at them through a completely fresh lens. Because the further down the road you get the more clearly you can see the divine intervention actually going on!WHAT WE'RE GETTING INTO: ✦ Why relief about an ending is actually a spiritual signal not a character flaw ✦ Recognition before readiness — and why seeing your destination before you're ready is actually the plan ✦ Being seen before you see yourself — and what to do with that mirror ✦ The alley oop — how every ending is actually a setup Because Friend — no endings are ever wasted. Not one single one.

There is power in gratitude, as we know. But, most powerful than that is the perspective shift that must occur to get through difficult times. The problem isn't that we don't have enough, the problem is that we forget what enough used to look like.

For years, I asked God for wisdom, responsibility, integrity........   I prayed for years, 10 to be exact.    I would go through things, get my ass beat by life, challenged at every turn, building businesses, losing money, and getting ground up in the wood chipper of life.    I remember one time I had to stroke a check for $750K due to an investment that went bad.  I wanted integrity, and I returned the money lost and took one on top of it.    Patience requires you to wait.  If you want patience, God is going to make you wait.    Wisdom.    I had to go through all of these things to get the experience to learn the lessons necessary to have the wisdom I was wanting.    Everything is a test and tests are not passed until you get the lessons necessary to get more of what you want.    Stay the course.   Enjoy the journey.    About the ReWire Podcast   The ReWire Podcast with Ryan Stewman – Dive into powerful insights as Ryan Stewman, the HardCore Closer, breaks down mental barriers and shares actionable steps to rewire your thoughts. In this episode, we continue through Matthew 6 as Jesus moves from giving to praying. We uncover the "3 Keys to Answered Prayers"—and why trying to sound like a "Shakespearean Monk" isn't one of them. We break down the Lord's Prayer not just as a recitation, but as a model of boldness: asking the King to fulfill His promises. We also tackle the hard truth about a "Dead Heart" using the Dead Sea analogy (if you have no outlet for forgiveness, you become stagnant), and why keeping some parts of your walk with God—like fasting—completely private is essential for a healthy faith. Key Topics Covered: Authenticity: Your heartfelt private prayers weigh more than flowery public speeches. 3 Keys to Answered Prayers: Focus on God's approval, not man's applause. Just ask—He already knows what you need! Ask for what the Father wants, and you'll always get it. The Dead Heart: Why refusing to forgive proves a lack of spiritual life (The Dead Sea effect). Private Faith: There is a fine line between asking for prayer and asking for attention. Keep some things holy between you and God.
