Robert Thomas Christgau (/ˈkrɪstɡaʊ/ KRIST-gow; born April 18, 1942) is an American music journalist and essayist. Among the most influential music critics,[1][2] he began his career in the late 1960s as one of the earliest professional rock critics and later became an early proponent of musical movements such as hip hop, riot grrrl, and the import of African popular music in the West.[2] He was the chief music critic and senior editor for The Village Voice for 37 years, during which time he created and oversaw the annual Pazz & Jop critics poll. He has also covered popular music for Esquire, Creem, Newsday, Playboy, Rolling Stone, Billboard, NPR, Blender, and MSN Music; he was a visiting arts teacher at New York University.[3] CNN senior writer Jamie Allen has called Christgau "the E. F. Hutton of the music world—when he talks, people listen."[4]Christgau is best known for his terse, letter-graded capsule album reviews, composed in a concentrated, fragmented prose style featuring layered clauses, caustic wit, one-liner jokes, political digressions, and allusions ranging from common knowledge to the esoteric.[5] His writing is often informed by leftist politics (particularly feminism[6] and secular humanism). He has generally favored song-oriented musical forms and qualities of wit and formal rigor, as well as musicianship from uncommon sources.[7]Originally published in his "Consumer Guide" columns during his tenure at The Village Voice from 1969 to 2006, the reviews were collected in book form across three decade-ending volumes–Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies (1981), Christgau's Record Guide: The '80s (1990), and Christgau's Consumer Guide: Albums of the '90s (2000).[3] Multiple collections of his essays have been published in book form,[3] and a website published in his name since 2001 has freely hosted most of his work.In 2006, the Voice dismissed Christgau after the paper's acquisition by New Times Media. He continued to write reviews in the "Consumer Guide" format for MSN Music, Cuepoint, and Noisey (Vice's music section) where they were published in his "Expert Witness" column[8] until July 2019.[9] In September of the same year, he launched a paid-subscription newsletter called And It Don't Stop, published on the email-newsletter platform Substack and featuring a monthly "Consumer Guide" column, among other writings.[10]PICTURE: By Joe Mabel - This image has been extracted from another file, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=79881980

Part three in our series on expert witnesses. Finding an expert witness goes beyond fancy credentials and an impressive CV. Guest Deena Peck is a senior manager of expert witnesses for The Round Table Group, which wrangles experts for attorneys in cases nationwide. She's joined by Dan Elms, a shareholder and veteran litigator with the law firm Greenberg Traurig. Let's dig in. It starts with the CV, but there's more to it. Don't be afraid to start with a video interview. Experts may look good on paper, but it's important to know if they can convey their expertise to a jury in a clear, relatable manner. Presentation and communication can be as important as expertise and authority. Your client's case may hinge on the experts you select. Don't be shy about challenging them (because opposing counsel sure will). The jury must trust your witness, but that can be a delicate dance. Too aloof, you lose your audience. Too casual, the jury may wonder if your witness is really an expert. And don't forget the practicalities, you need an available witness, not someone with a planned lengthy vacation on their calendar. Is the expert a team player who could suggest angles you haven't considered? What about references from other lawyers? Plus, it's important to understand what kind of expert you need for your case. Industry knowledge can differ from academic expertise. Can your experts explain where their academic qualifications extend into the specifics of your case. As a legal nurse consultant, you will be evaluating both the physicians who may be defendants in lawsuits and in the selection of physician expert witnesses. What standards are most effective in making those choices? Discover the answers in our podcast episode: Expert Witness Essentials: Evaluating Physician Credentials. Here to help us in making those decisions is Dr. Kayur Patel, who has spent much of his professional life looking at quality of care issues from various perspectives. He breaks down the stages of the very long path of a would-be doctor's journey. One issue he demystifies is whether going to a non-U.S. medical school is a handicap in terms of professional reputation. As long as a student passes the USMLE (U.S. Medical Licensing Examination), they are qualified. He also explains about board certification in a specialty. Roughly 60% of doctors are not board-certified. Board certification gives an extra layer of credibility. Dr. Patel says that board-certified doctors are less likely to be involved in malpractice suits. They are seen as having greater credentials than doctors without that extra credential. Given the challenge of selecting expert witnesses, this distinction will help LNCs make the choice that can often influence juries. This podcast will help LNCs and also lawyers to understand the detailed and prolonged training doctors go through. Here's What to Expect from the Podcast: Expert Witness Essentials: Evaluating Physician Credentials What is involved in becoming a doctor? What impact does schooling history have on a doctor's competency to be an expert witness? What distinctions are involved in further professional specializations? This is particularly true in cases that center around kink or BDSM, consensual non-monogamy, and sexual or gender minorities. The job of the experts is to help judges and juries better understand the sexual issues at hand. In today’s show, I'm going to interview a colleague who has extensive experience serving as an expert witness. We're going to talk about the some of the cases she’s been a part of, what the experience is like, and more. My guest is Dr. Elisabeth Sheff, a researcher, expert witness, coach, speaker, and educational consultant. Dr. Eli holds a PhD in Sociology and certification as a Sexuality Educator from AASECT. She has published four books, over 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and chapters, and is currently editing a series of books on relationship and sexual diversity. Some of the specific questions we answer in this episode include: How do you decide which legal cases to get involved in? What are some reasons why you might not take a particular case? What kinds of legal issues come up for non-monogamous individuals that would require an expert witness? What are some of the legal issues that come up in the context of kink and BDSM? Given that consent is not a valid legal defense for injuries that arise during sex, what do kinky folks need to know with respect to avoiding potential legal peril? You can visit Dr. Eli’s website to learn more about her work. Got a sex question? Summary of Case Number: 1:22-cv-10904-JSR - Third-Party Defendant James Staley's Brief in Support of His Motion to Exclude JPMorgan Chase Bank's Proffered Expert OpinionsIn this case, James Staley, a third-party defendant, has filed a brief supporting his motion to exclude expert opinions presented by JPMorgan Chase Bank. The core arguments of Staley's brief are:Lack of Relevance and Reliability: Staley argues that the expert opinions submitted by JPMorgan Chase Bank do not meet the legal standards of relevance and reliability required under Federal Rule of Evidence 702 and the Daubert standard. He contends that the opinions are speculative, not based on sufficient facts or data, and do not employ reliable principles and methods.Failure to Establish a Sufficient Basis for Opinions: Staley claims that the experts have not provided a proper factual foundation for their opinions. He argues that the expert reports lack direct connection to the specific facts of the case and fail to address how the opinions would help the court understand the evidence or determine facts in issue.Prejudice and Confusion: The brief also highlights concerns that allowing these expert opinions could cause unfair prejudice against Staley and confuse the jury. Staley argues that the expert opinions could lead the jury to rely on unsubstantiated and misleading conclusions, which would be unfair and unjust.Request for Exclusion: Based on these arguments, Staley requests the court to exclude the expert testimonies and opinions presented by JPMorgan Chase Bank in their entirety, asserting that their inclusion would violate legal standards and potentially harm the integrity of the judicial process.Overall, Staley's motion aims to prevent the introduction of what he considers to be flawed and unhelpful expert opinions that could negatively influence the outcome of the case.(commercial at 7:39)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:gov.uscourts.nysd.591653.342.0.pdf (courtlistener.com)
