Join the KCC team for the conclusion of the Craig Rice case!   If you have been listening to our most recent stories you will see we have been slightly dabbling in cases that have controversies. Such as deaths ruled suicide and should have been homicide or even wrongfully convicted. Today we will touch on a wrongfully convicted case with a twist. It involves a murder that was part of a hate crime and an innocent being charged with minimal evidence. I don't think we have ever done a case that was part of a hate crime. Hate crimes are specifically tricky to convict. Today's story is going to be a wild ride.

Stuart Palmer (1905–1968) was an accomplished American mystery novelist and screenwriter, best known for his creation of the beloved character Hildegarde Withers. Born on June 21, 1905, in Baraboo, Wisconsin, Palmer pursued various odd jobs before finding his calling in fiction. His literary journey began with contributions to Ghost Stories magazine in the late 1920s and early 1930s, sometimes writing under the pseudonym Theodore Orchards. Palmer's foray into murder mysteries began with "The Penguin Pool Murder" (1931), which introduced readers to Hildegarde Withers, a spinster schoolteacher turned amateur sleuth. Palmer's talent for crafting engaging mysteries with memorable characters solidified his place as a prominent figure in the genre. Palmer's Hildegarde Withers stories captivated audiences with their wit, humor, and clever plot twists. Withers, a unique blend of intelligence and eccentricity, endeared herself to readers as she tackled puzzling cases alongside Inspector Oscar Piper. The series, spanning fourteen novels and numerous short stories, showcased Palmer's ability to balance suspense with comedy, making the Withers mysteries a favorite among fans of classic detective fiction. Palmer's collaborations with fellow mystery writer Craig Rice also added depth to the Withers universe, highlighting the chemistry between Withers and Rice's detective, J.J. Malone. One of Palmer's notable Hildegarde Withers stories is "The Riddle of the Yellow Canary," a gripping tale of murder and intrigue. First published in [year], this story sees Withers racing against time to prove that a young songwriter's death was not accidental but a deliberate act of murder. Set against the backdrop of New York City, "The Riddle of the Yellow Canary" showcases Palmer's talent for crafting compelling narratives filled with twists and turns. Withers' sharp intellect and tenacity shine as she unravels the mystery, keeping readers on the edge of their seats until the final revelation. This story, like many others in the Withers series, exemplifies Palmer's mastery of the mystery genre and his ability to create enduring characters and captivating plots. If you exclude major streets (that don't have land use designations), approximately 75% of the land in Toronto only permits a single family home to be developed on it. The other 20% are open spaces and employment zones (where people can work), leaving only 5% to be able to develop in to more denser uses. Furthermore, the re-zoning process is complicated, and takes several years and is an expensive process. So if you are faced with the choice to intensify land, you'd naturally want to swing for the fences, namely, large apartment buildings and condos. This is where the “Missing Middle” term came from. It's a range of housing types between single family homes to apartment buildings that have gone missing from large cities. As of May 10, 2023, The City of Toronto has adopted an amendment to the zoning by-law and official plan to allow multiplexes citywide, thereby eliminating single-family zoning. You can now create up to 4 units on all lots with residential zoning, plus a garden or lane suite. Will this be enough to solve the housing crisis? What's the cost to do so, and what does the process look like? Are there any objections from the community? The Sisters in Crime Writers' Podcast

Jeffrey Marks is a long-time mystery fan and freelancer . After numerous mystery author profiles for The Armchair Detective, Mystery Scene, and other genre publications, he chose to chronicle the short but full life of mystery writer Craig Rice. That biography (Who Was That Lady?) encouraged him to write mystery fiction. His works include Atomic Renaissance: Women Mystery Writers of the 1940s/1950s, a group biography of women, including lesbian authors, who had written in the years following WWII and their impact on the genre. Marks had corresponded to many of them during his time working on the Rice biography. He also published a biography of mystery author and critic Anthony Boucher entitled Anthony Boucher. He received a grant while working on that book. It was nominated for an Agatha and fittingly, won an Anthony.Marks is currently working on a biography of Erle Stanley Gardner, a book on Gardner's work with his Pre-Innocence Project, Court of Last Resort, and a dual biography of the two men who wrote as Ellery Queen.Marks has also written mystery fiction. His earliest works were short fiction, and he has won some regional awards for those works. He published four short story anthologies on various themes, including Canine Crimes and Canine Christmas from Random House, which included Marks' stories about a queer detective. He's currently working on a series of semi-autobiographical mystery short stories that will appear in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. These tackle issues surrounding gay men in the 1970s.His work has won a number of regional awards including the Barnes and Noble Prize and he was nominated for a Maxwell award (DWAA), an Edgar (MWA), three Agathas (Malice Domestic), two Macavity awards, and three Anthony awards (Bouchercon). Marks retired from teaching in 2020, and today, he writes from his home in Cincinnati, which he shares with his husband and three dogs.Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/jeffrmarks/Twitter https://twitter.com/jeffrmarksInstagram https://www.instagram.com/jeffrmarks/Website http://www.jeffreymarks.com*****************Sisters in Crime was founded in 1986 to promote the ongoing advancement, recognition and professional development of women crime writers.
