“Satisfaction comes from the character's journey,” according to one of Jeanne's favorite repeat guests (this is her third episode!), award-winning Chicago crime writer Tracy Clark. And what a journey Tracy takes us on in Fall, the second in her Harriet Foster thriller series, out now! She shares with Jeanne how she's still trying to find a way into Harriet's head after 2 books; why she's a pantser; what the key is to getting people to buy into a character; why the bad guy has to resonate as much as the good guy; and why she sometimes needs a hard hat and a pick ax when she sits down to write.  Tracy Clark, a native Chicagoan, is the author of the award-winning Cass Raines Chicago Mystery series, featuring ex-cop turned PI Cassandra Raines, and the Detective Harriet Foster series, featuring Harriet Foster, a homicide detective with the Chicago Police Department. Two tough, smart, African American female characters working the mean streets of the Windy City. A multi-nominated Anthony, Lefty, Macavity, Edgar and Shamus Award finalist, Tracy is also the 2020 and 2022 winner of the G.P. Putnam's Sons Sue Grafton Memorial Award, as well as the 2022 Sara Paretsky Award, and is a proud member of Crime Writers of Color, Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime, and currently serves on the Bouchercon national board and the board of the Midwest Mystery Conference. Join these two Wyoming authors as they talk about C.J. Box's #1 NYT-bestselling novel, STORM WATCH, and his feelings about being named National Guest of Honor for Bouchercon San Diego 2023. About C.J.: C. J. Box is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of 30 novels including the Joe Pickett series. He won the Edgar Alan Poe Award for Best Novel (Blue Heaven, 2009) as well as the Anthony Award, Prix Calibre 38 (France), the Maltese Falcon Award (Japan), the Macavity Award, the Gumshoe Award, two Barry Awards, and the 2010 Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association Award for fiction. He was recently awarded the 2016 Western Heritage Award for Literature by the National Cowboy Museum as well as the Spur Award for Best Contemporary Novel by the Western Writers of America in 2017. Over ten million copies of his books have been sold in the U.S. and abroad and they've been translated into 27 languages. Two television series based on his novels are in production (BIG SKY on ABC and JOE PICKETT on Spectrum Originals). About STORM WATCH: Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett investigates a mysterious death at a secret remote high-tech facility in this riveting new novel from #1 New York Times bestseller C.J. Box. When a prominent University of Wyoming professor goes missing, authorities are stumped. That is, until Joe Pickett makes two surprising discoveries while hunting down a wounded elk on his district as an epic spring storm descends upon him. First, he finds the professor's vehicle parked on a remote mountainside. Then Joe finds the professor's frozen and mutilated body. When he attempts to learn more, his investigation is obstructed by federal agents, extremists, and Governor Colter Allen. Nate Romanowski is rebuilding his falconry company—and financing this through crypto mining with the assistance of Geronimo Jones. He's then approached by a shadowy group of local militant activists that is gaining in power and influence, and demanding that Wyoming join other western states and secede from the union—by force, if necessary. They ask Nate to throw in with them, but he's wary. Should he trust them, or is he being set up? As a storm of peril gathers around them, Joe and Nate confront it in different ways—and maybe, for the first time, on opposite sides. About Bouchercon: The World Mystery Convention is a nonprofit, organization which holds an annual convention in honor of Anthony Boucher, the distinguished mystery fiction critic, editor and author. It is the world's premier event bringing together all parts of the mystery and crime fiction community, and is pronounced [bough'•chur•con]. Bouchercon® is the annual world mystery convention where every year readers, writers, publishers, editors, agents, booksellers and other lovers of crime fiction gather for a 4-day weekend of education, entertainment, and fun! Jeffrey Marks is a long-time mystery fan and freelancer . After numerous mystery author profiles for The Armchair Detective, Mystery Scene, and other genre publications, he chose to chronicle the short but full life of mystery writer Craig Rice. That biography (Who Was That Lady?) encouraged him to write mystery fiction. His works include Atomic Renaissance: Women Mystery Writers of the 1940s/1950s, a group biography of women, including lesbian authors, who had written in the years following WWII and their impact on the genre. Marks had corresponded to many of them during his time working on the Rice biography. He also published a biography of mystery author and critic Anthony Boucher entitled Anthony Boucher. He received a grant while working on that book. It was nominated for an Agatha and fittingly, won an Anthony.Marks is currently working on a biography of Erle Stanley Gardner, a book on Gardner's work with his Pre-Innocence Project, Court of Last Resort, and a dual biography of the two men who wrote as Ellery Queen.Marks has also written mystery fiction. His earliest works were short fiction, and he has won some regional awards for those works. He published four short story anthologies on various themes, including Canine Crimes and Canine Christmas from Random House, which included Marks' stories about a queer detective. He's currently working on a series of semi-autobiographical mystery short stories that will appear in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. These tackle issues surrounding gay men in the 1970s.His work has won a number of regional awards including the Barnes and Noble Prize and he was nominated for a Maxwell award (DWAA), an Edgar (MWA), three Agathas (Malice Domestic), two Macavity awards, and three Anthony awards (Bouchercon). Marks retired from teaching in 2020, and today, he writes from his home in Cincinnati, which he shares with his husband and three dogs.Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/jeffrmarks/Twitter https://twitter.com/jeffrmarksInstagram https://www.instagram.com/jeffrmarks/Website http://www.jeffreymarks.com*****************Sisters in Crime was founded in 1986 to promote the ongoing advancement, recognition and professional development of women crime writers.
