Josh is joined by fellow Steven Soderbergh enthusiasts, Old Auteur Correspondent Josh Brown and Tom Hanks Correspondent Joe Morgan for a double feature. First, they talk about Soderbergh's "Presence" (Beginning-41:50) including the unique camera-work utilized to tell a story from the perspective of a ghost, if the film managed to make the audience care about its characters despite its short run time, the specific ways in which it was disturbing without traditional jump scares and much more! Then (41:51-end) they discuss Robert Zemeckis' "Here" and how Bobby Z did in adapting a one-location graphic novel in which the camera barely moves in a film that spans centuries, if they got sufficient glimpses of all of the characters' lives despite the story jumping back-and-forth throughout, the quality of the vairous performances and much more!

The 40th anniversary of Prince's best-selling album and film “Purple Rain” is next month on June 25 and 27 respectively. And on Tuesday, a new memorabilia- and picture-filled book will be released in honor of the occasion: “Prince and Purple Rain: 40 Years.”Prince's story is told by Minneapolis-based music journalist Andrea Swensson, who is also the host of the Official Prince Podcast, a Minnesota Book Award winner and former host of the Current's Local Show. A long-time reporter on Prince and the Minnesota music beat, she calls her new book a “love letter” to his legacy. It all began in 2014 when Swensson assembled a 30th-anniversary package for MPR News and the Current.“And that really started this whole Prince adventure that I've been on over the last decade,” Swensson told MPR News on Monday.“I started covering his career so closely when he was still with us and have done a lot of work around his legacy since we lost him. And I really wanted to take this opportunity to put together something that captured so many of these amazing stories about him, and really spoke to my own personal connection to his music and to his life and what he meant to me.” April 2017 Remembering Prince at his home and studio October 2017 Andrea Swensson tells the story of the 'Minneapolis Sound' in first book Swensson describes the era of “Purple Rain” as iconic and world-building, calling the watershed film unrivaled in rock history. Prince's influence, she said, is almost impossible to untangle from the fabric of the music industry over the last 40 years. 'Prince and Purple Rain: 40 Years' Swensson says she has interviewed each member of The Revolution — Bobby Z, BrownMark, Dr. Fink, Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvoin — at least three times.“He wanted us to be a gang … and by the time we got to ‘Purple Rain,' we were,” drummer Bobby Z recalls in the book. Bassist BrownMark affirmed: “We were experts … The way we rehearsed, I mean, ‘Purple Rain,' I could fall asleep and probably play it. That's how well we knew the whole set.”“We've had some really, really memorable conversations,” Swensson said. “This was such a pivotal time in all of their lives. Wendy Melvoin was only 19-years-old when she joined Prince's band. And her very first show is the night that they played at First Avenue and recorded ‘Purple Rain.'”The book was put together and contributed to by a hyperlocal team, including photography from Greg Helgeson, Tommy Smith III and Nancy Bundt; private archivist Rich Benson; designers Sotera Tschetter and Cindy Laun; editor Dennis Pernu and art director Heather Godin. It's filled with evocative photography, images of ticket stubs, posters and vinyl records, reflective quotes and iconic lyrics — transporting the reader back to the summer of 1984.Writing the tribute conjured up some unexpected emotions for Swenson.“There was something therapeutic to me about being able to revisit that meeting that I had with him because we did talk a lot about his feelings about anniversaries ... At the time that we met, he had two new albums in the can he was getting ready to put out,” she said. “So there was something really poignant and a little bittersweet to me to really sit with my notes and my memories of that night and be able to write about it in this way. And it did feel like some kind of full circle moment.”“Prince and Purple Rain: 40 Years,” including a foreword by Maya Rudolph, debuts on May 21. There is a book release party on June 12 at Electric Fetus in Minneapolis; a pre-order is required.

Welcome to one of the best podcast episodes of 2023. Why? Because my guest is the multi-award-winning New York Times bestselling author Don Winslow. With nearly two dozen novels under his belt, many of which have experienced international best-seller status, Don has spent a better part of 30 years honing his immense writing craft. With the debut of his "City Trilogy," which includes last year's smash hit, "City on Fire," followed up this year with "City of Dreams," the only thing left to do is to wrap the trifecta of narrative fiction tastiness with his "City In Ruins" that will release in 2024.But for now, I sit down with Don to spend an hour talking about his various series, many of which I've read, and my listeners have enjoyed for the past several decades. We discuss the art of writing, the writing community, what it takes to be a successful writer, and his best suggestions on crafting winning thrillers. Plus, perhaps some of the biggest news to cross our desks: Oscar-nom Austin Butler has been contracted to play Danny Ryan, the lead in the City Trilogy. Austin will likewise produce, alongside Don and his long-time friend and agent, Shane Salerno of The Story Factory. We also share a mutual passion for Jazz, and discuss that, as well as our love of New York City, both past and present; our appreciation of taking the time to do whatever it takes to make the very best product possible, and we discuss our mutual love of Los Olas Mexican Restaurant (an Encinitas/Cardiff mainstay). In the fun-and-games section of our show, called "Rapid Fire Questions" we learn what makes Don tick, as it pertains to his preference for writing (tools, music, and technique). And wait'll you hear whose three guests he would invite with him and Jean to dinner with Tammy and myself. All in all, I had a simply sublime time with a man whom I greatly admire, and am both humbled and honored to call "friend." And as I say near the end of the show, I consider him one of the most significant writers of my generation. To learn more about Don, visit his website at: DonWinslow.com. This one goes out to our mom, Carol, who loved Romancing the Stone - an action adventure romantic comedy from 1984 starring Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas. Come to find out, we like these movies now too now that we're in our mid to late 30s and it's directed by our pal, Robert Zemeckis or Bobby Z if you've listened to some of our past episodes on Back to the Future or Forrest Gump.  Romancing the Stone (weird title, we'll go into it) follows Joan Wilder, romance novel/cat lady who longs for a real life romance, not just one to write about.  She finds it when she has to high tail it to Colombia to save her sister from some sketchy dudes who have kidnapped her in the hope that she has a map her dead (murdered? details are foggy) husband had that will lead to lost gemstone.  Joan ends up with the map, goes to Colombia and on the way meets Jack T. Colton aka hot guy with a gun and problems buttoning his shirt all the way - who helps her in more ways then one, *wink wink.  We'll talk about rom coms geared towards middle aged women in the 80s, how travel was so so different way back when and is Michael Douglas hot or does he look like a rat? Weigh in please on this burning question.

"I never meant to cause you any sorrow, I never meant to cause you any pain..." True stories of what Prince's epic ballad means to different people around the world, from the very first jam in 1983 to the global hit that reigns over us today. Bobby Z, the drummer from Prince and The Revolution, remembers the buzz of the first ever performance of Purple Rain, and how the recording from that night lives on. Susan Rogers, Prince's recording engineer, tells stories from the Purple Rain tour, when the crew took bets on how long Prince's guitar solos would last. Comedian Sindhu Vee first heard the song as a teenager growing up in India and was knocked sideways by it. Weather reporter Judith Ralston describes the beautiful and rare weather phenomenon of purple rain. Social historian Zaheer Ali sees the song as a cry out for change, bringing audiences from different backgrounds together in cross-genre harmony. And finally, an intensive care hospital nurse played Purple Rain to Kevin Clarke while he was in a coma, because his sister knew he loved the song and hoped it might pull him through. Produced by Becky Ripley

Savages was made into a feature film by three-time Oscar-winning writer-director Oliver Stone. The Power of the Dog, The Cartel, and The Border sold to FX as a major television series, and The Force is soon to be a major motion picture from 20th Century Studios. A former investigator, antiterrorist trainer, and trail consultant, Winslow lives in California and Rhode Island. The son of a sailor and a librarian, Winslow grew up with a love of books and storytelling in a small coastal Rhode Island town. He left at age seventeen to study journalism at the University of Nebraska, where he earned a degree in African Studies. While in college, he traveled to southern Africa, sparking a lifelong involvement with that continent. Winslow's travels took him to California, Idaho and Montana before he moved to New York City to become a writer, making his living as a movie theater manager and later a private investigator in Times Square – ‘before Mickey Mouse took it over'. He left to get a master's degree in Military History and intended to go into the Foreign Service but instead joined a friend's photographic safari firm in Kenya.  He led trips there as well as hiking expeditions in southwestern China, and later directed Shakespeare productions during summers in Oxford, England. While bouncing back and forth between Asia, Africa, Europe and America, Winslow wrote his first novel, A Cool Breeze On The Underground, which was nominated for an Edgar Award. With a wife and young son, Winslow went back to investigative work, mostly in California, where he and his family lived in hotels for almost three years as he worked cases and became a trial consultant. A film and publishing deal for his novel The Death and Life of Bobby Z allowed Winslow to be full-time writer and settle in his beloved California, the setting for many of his books. Branching into television and film, Winslow, with his friend Shane Salerno, wrote a television series, UC/Undercover, and the two collaborated on the screenplay of his novel, Savages. His novels have attracted the attention of filmmakers and actors such as Oliver Stone, Michael Mann, Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Robert DeNiro and Leonardo DiCaprio.  Twentieth Century Fox has optioned his next novel about a NYPD cop as well as The Cartel and The Power of the Dog.  Earlier books Savages and The Death and Life of Bobby Z were made into films, too. In addition to his novels, Winslow has published numerous short stories in anthologies and magazines such as Esquire, the LA Times Magazine and Playboy. His columns have appeared in the Vanity Fair, Vulture, Huffington Post, CNN Online, and other outlets. Winslow is the recipient of the Raymond Chandler Award (Italy), the LA Times Book Prize, the Ian Fleming Silver Dagger (UK), The RBA Literary Prize (Spain) and many other prestigious awards. He lives in California with his wife of thirty-one years. Check out all things Jon Carroll Follow and Support Pete Coe Pete on YouTube Pete on Twitter Pete On Instagram Pete Personal FB page
