A jury in New York convicted former President Donald Trump in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records. Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey (R) recently testified on Capitol Hill before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, telling Congress that prosecution is politically motivated. Democratic supporters of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg praise the conviction, saying no one is above the law. But General Bailey sees it differently, telling Congress that "the left hates President Trump more than they love this country" and that they've prioritized their hatred of the former President above the rule of law. General Bailey joined us live on 939 the Eagle's "Wake Up Mid-Missouri" and reiterated what he testified before Congress: that this is a strategic attack against a former President and a current candidate for President. General Bailey also discussed the court case involved college loans:
You've heard the mantra “safety first.” Politicians used it as a justification for Covid lockdowns. But Mike Rowe, former host of "Dirty Jobs”, has his own slogan: “safety third.” Why “safety third?” It's easy to save lives, says Rowe, but LIVING life is more important. I made a couple of short videos with Rowe. But he has a lot of other interesting things to say on lockdowns, why college is a waste of money, the dignity of work, and more. So here is our full interview.
US House Rep. Kat Cammack politics of impeaching the incompetent Homeland Security head, insulting parents who sacrificed to send their kids to college, warrantless searches in the renewal of the FISA defense measure, and the illogic of EV promotion, Wednesday on the Bob Rose Show.

The Constitution's “ideal” for the US Supreme Court is a group of learned individuals debating in a bipartisan manner with the purpose of resolving questions of Constitutional interpretation to uphold the rule of law in the United States. Today, the US is far more divided and so is the High Court: Are the learned justices now talking past each other instead of grappling with the issues at the heart of the Constitutional debate? The rejection of President Biden's student loan forgiveness program provides a recent example. Host Jack Russo and Professor Robert Acker examine the growing controversy about whether the High Court is functioning in a way that our Founding Fathers imagines or whether there is some need for structural reform and if so, how?
Chelsea and I look at the recent Supreme Court ruling on two related cases about "student loan forgiveness."In one case, students believed they were entitled to an unconstitutional handout for which they didn't qualify. In the other case, the U.S. President believed he was entitled to make promises for the unconstitutional program itself. The conservative majority argued that the HEROES Act of 2003 as originally intended and its "waive or modify" clause didn't allow the Secretary of Education to "rewrite" the law for a different situation and purpose. The liberal minority basically argued that the law grants "broad" and "general" powers for an "emergency" and "unforeseen events" (of course).Chelsea and I explain four moral hazards that "student loan forgiveness" schemes introduce. The Supreme Court struck down the admission policies of many colleges, ruling Affirmative Action to be illegal under the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment, but how much of this is just pretext? Although race is no longer a valid reason for getting accepted to a university, aspiring students can still game the system by including challenges they face due to their minority status in their essays. So, did SCOTUS actually change anything with this ruling? Host Jack Russo and Professor Robert Acker discuss how universities could handle this subtle tweak to admission policies when weeding through thousands of college applications.

What exactly is covered by the First Amendment? It's something most American's thought they knew, but when the Supreme Court ended its term on June 30th SCOTUS left us with a few questions on one of their latest rulings. Lorie Smith of 303 Creative (a single person web design LLC) won the right to not create a wedding website for a same-sex couple based on her First Amendments rights. While many across America see this as a win for free speech and religious freedom, others see this ruling as a setback to LGBT rights. Host Jack Russo and Professor Robert Acker revisit this controversial case of public accommodation vs freedom of expression.

Paying for college is tricky! Filling out the FAFSA, applying for loans, trying for scholarships… and then, debt. The process is anxiety inducing and sometimes ambiguous - but that doesn't mean it has to be! Erik Garcia, CFP®, BFA, and Xavier Angel, CFP®, ChFC, CLTC, are joined by John Hupalo, CEO and founder of My College Corner, to talk about the intricacies of applying to college, filling out the FAFSA, and how loans can impact your finances. Episode Highlights: John discusses the importance of having real conversations about financial matters with younger generations. (4:51) John believes that real-life lessons about money cannot be effectively taught in school, but rather learned through practical experience. (7:09) John mentions that there is a rule of thumb that if a student graduates with a debt that is less than or equal to their first-year starting salary, they will be able to pay that off comfortably over time. (9:24) John explains the two types of financial aid: need-based and merit-based. (11:15) John advises students to consult with the financial aid office at their school to clarify how third-party scholarships might affect their financial aid award. (15:01) John explains that the FAFSA form is available for senior-year students to fill out in October, and that a new formula will be used for the student aid index calculation beginning next year. (20:16) John shares that some undergraduate students may qualify as independent students when filing FAFSA, especially if they are not being claimed as dependents on their parents' tax returns. (22:58) John explains that the financial aid formula for determining eligibility is primarily income-driven, with some asset protection allowances. (26:11) John discusses the tax advantages of 529 college savings plans, which now cover a wider range of educational expenses, including student loans, apprenticeships, and private secondary schools. (29:03) John recommends visiting fsa.gov for federal student aid information and individual college websites for need-based aid details, including the PROFILE form used by some private institutions. (32:34) John explains the difference between the sticker price and the net price for college tuition, noting that the average tuition discount is 50%. (35:27) John acknowledges the emotional and operational difficulties faced by both students and schools due to the pandemic. (38:55) John discusses the crucial role of financial professionals in guiding clients through college financing decisions. (42:05) Key Quotes: “Kids who get out of college, they get a job, most of those kids do really well. And they can make a good way for themselves and they can pay back the debt in good time. So it really is about responsible borrowing.” - John Hupalo “The other thing that the government does is that there are two flavors of that direct student loan, one is subsidized on is unsubsidized. So if there's a really low-income family, they could get a subsidized loan, which means the government will pay the interest while they're in school.” - John Hupalo “The beautiful thing about the 529 is that there's a really significant tax benefit. Once you put the money in there you don't pay any tax on that unless you don't use it for college basically.” - John Hupalo Resources Mentioned: John Hupalo LinkedIn Invite Education My College Corner Building Us podcast: Part 1: Where Do I Start in Planning for My Child's College? Joe Madison hears directly from listeners about their experience with student loan debt and how President Biden's loan forgiveness plan will impact their lives.
Is student loan forgiveness ultimately going to fall on taxpayers? One side of the aisle would have you believe so. What about when President Trump lowered taxes on wealthy individuals? That same side of the aisle was noticeably exuberant. The issue isn't so much student loan forgiveness or tax cuts, the problem is a broken system that we fail to fix. We conveniently triage it during election cycles, but we refuse to make the fundamental changes needed. Tune into this week's episode as Tom and Dylan get into a heated debate on this topic and more.
