“RICHARD CARLSON: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH” (081) - 3/31/2025 Tall, dark-haired, and handsome, RICHARD CARLSON was always a welcomed addition to any cast. From the beginning, when he was playing preppy college students opposite LANA TURNER, to his reign in the 1950s as the King of Sci-Fi thrillers, Carlson brought believability and authority to each role but also a sense of introspective thoughtfulness. You looked into his deep blue eyes and chiseled face and believed him. Whatever he was selling, we were buying. And while he never became an A-list leading man, he enjoyed a long and steady career and enhanced many a mediocre film with his special appeal. This week, we celebrate RICHARD CARLSON as our Star of the Month.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Monsters in the Machine (2016), by Steffen Hantke; Keep Watching the Skies (2009), by Bill Warren; “Richard Carlson: Albert Lea's Other Film & Television Star,” December 24, 2016, by Ed Shannon; “Today's Underrated Actor Spotlight: Richard Carlson,” June 24, 2105, by Bynum, www.thetinseltoentwins.com; “A Tribute To Richard Carlson,' January 9, 2014, www.scififilmfiesta.com; “Richard Carlson, Actor, Dies at 65,” November 27, 1977, New York Times; Wikipedia.com; TCM.com; IMDBPro.com; Movies Mentioned:  Desert Death (1935), starring Raymond Hatton; The Young in Heart (1938), starring Janet Gaynor, Roland Young, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr & Paulette Goddard; The Duke of West Point (1938), starring Louis Hayward & Joan Fontaine; Winter Carnival (1939), starring Ann Sheridan, Richard Carlson, & Robert Mitchum; These Glamour Girls (1939), starring Lana Turner & Lew Ayres; Dancing Co-Ed (1939), starring Lana Turner & Richard Carlson; Beyond Tomorrow (1940), starring Haley Carey & Charles Winning; No, No, Nanette (1940), starring Anna Neagle; The Howards of Virginia (1940), starring Cary Grant & Martha Scott; Back Street (1941), starring Margaret Sullavan & Charles Boyer; The Little Foxes (1941Ol staring Bette Davis & Teresa Wright; The Affairs of Martha (1942), starring Marsha Hunt & Richard Carlson; My Heart Belongs to Daddy (1942), starring Richard Carlson & Martha O'Driscoll; Fly By Night (1942) starring Richard Carlson & Nancy Kelly; Hold That Ghost (1941), starring Bud Abbot & Lou Costello; White Cargo (1942), staring Hedy Lamarr& Walter Pidgeon; Presenting Lily Mars (1943), starring Judy Garland & Van Heflin; The Man From Down Under (1943), starring Charles Laughton & Donna Reed; So Well Remembered (1947), starring John Mills & Martha Scott; Behind Locked Doors (1948), starring Richard Carlson & Lucille Bremer; The Amazing Mr. X (1948), starring Turban Bey, Lynn Bari, & Cathy O'Donnell; King Solomon's Mines (1950), starring Stewart Granger & Deborah Kerr; The Sound of Fury (1950), starring Frank Lovejoy; The Blue Veil (1951), starring Jane Wyman, Charles Laughton, & Joan Blondell; The Magnetic Monster (1953), starring Richard Carlson; It Came from Outer Space (1954), starring Richard Carlson & Barbara Rush; The Maze (1953), starring Richard Carlson & Hillary Brooke; The Creature from The Black Lagoon (1954), starring Richard Carlson & Julie Adams; All I Desire (1953), starring Barbara Stanwyck & Richard Carlson; Riders To the Stars (1954), starring William Lundigan; Appointment with a Shadow (1957), starring George Nadar; The Saga of Hemp Brown (1957), starring Rory Calhoun; Johnny Rocco (1958), starring Richard Evers & Coleen Gray; Tormented (1960), starring Richard Carlson; Kid Rodelo (1966), starring Broderick Crawford & Janet Leigh; Change of Habit (1969), starring Elvis Pressly, Mary Tyler moore, & Richard Carlson; --------------------------------- http://www.airwavemedia.com Please contact sales@advertisecast.com if you would like to advertise on our podcast. EPISODE 78 - “FILM NOIR - Part 1 - WHAT IS NOIR?” - 3/10/2025 Have you ever wondered what exactly is film noir? TCM's EDDIE MULLER describes it this way: “Film Noir is all about treachery, deceit, and paranoia. You're never quite sure what is going on, who you can trust, or what dreadful pitfall waits around the corner.” This dark and twisted film genre popped up after WWII as a quiet cynicism began to creep into the national consciousness. In film noir, there is always an underbelly of darkness that comes out to play. And within the darkness, the shadows, and the neon lights, lie many stories of crime, dishonesty, adultery, murder, and mayhem. This week, we present the first in a special three-part series that delves into the darkest of genres where crooked cops, gangsters, torch singers, barflies, and other seedy character's live, love and kill. Join us as we discuss Film Noir!  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Film Noir (2017), by Alian Silver & James Ursini; Into the Darkness: The Hidden World of Film Noir 1941-1959 (2016), by Mark A. Drew and Marc caught Jerry Seinfeld's "Unfrosted" on Netflix. "Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza" on Paramount+ is a good watch. Jim Rose's Circus and The Amazing Mr. Lifto should still be touring. The Black Crowes rocked Mama Kin with Steven Tyler in London. Chet Hanks declares it another White Boy Summer... after being pulled over in his new Lamborghini. He is in a new movie with Rob Schneider called Dead Wrong. The feds are investigating Matthew Perry's death. In an interview, Courtney Cox claims sees the ghost of him before a segue into a new product she's selling. WATP Karl joins the show to cover Bill Maher and Jerry Seinfeld on Club Random, expose us to more 'Woke Dad' and more. Save the date of October 25 for the next WATP Live show in Detroit. Cam'ron went on CNN to talk about Diddy only to get upset for being on the show to talk about Diddy. At least he got a plug in for his "sexual enhancement" beverage. When did Joe Piscapo become a joke? Some people are saying it was around the time he sang this song on TV. Daniel Stern has an autobiography out where he claims Macaulay Culkin didn't know how to play when he was a kid. One day Ben Affleck and J Lo are together and the next he realizes she's awful to be around. Diddy is being sued by another model who claims he sexually assaulted her. New York City Mayor Eric Adams is "reviewing" the possibility of making Diddy return the key to the city that he just gave him 8 months ago. "Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy" is dishing on John F Kennedy Jr's wife. Amy Robach whines to TJ Holmes that Andrew Shue (husband number 2) never bought her an engagement ring. GMA3 anchor DeMarco Morgan has new biker shorts that hide his bulge that made all of Good Morning America's staff upset. The USA Today is calling for Joe Biden to drop out of the Presidential race. We return to Hammer Productions with Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell, filmed at Elstree Studios in 1972. It marked the final chapter in the Hammer Frankenstein saga and director Terence Fisher's last film. The Film Features: Peter Cushing in his sixth and final portrayal of Baron Victor Frankenstein, a part he originated in 1957's The Curse of Frankenstein. Despite being 59 and apparently in poor health when he made this film, Cushing still insisted on performing a stunt requiring him to leap from a tabletop onto the hulking creature's back, spinning wildly in circles to subdue the monster gone amok with a sedative. Shane Briant as Dr. Simon Helder, best known for his four Hammer appearances, including this film and Demons of the Mind, Straight on Till Morning, and Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter (coming soon from General Witchfinders). He reprised the role of Simon Helder years later in the film Sherlock Holmes vs. Frankenstein. Madeline Smith as Sarah "Angel" Klauss. Also seen in Hammer's The Vampire Lovers, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Tam-Lin, and Theatre of Blood, she went on to become the first Bond girl of the Roger Moore era, Miss Caruso, in the post-opening titles sequence of Live and Let Die (infamous for the scene where Bond unzips her dress with a magnetic wristwatch). After taking a break from acting to raise her daughter, she is still working now at the age of 74, recently appearing in Mark Gatiss's The Amazing Mr. Blunden. And of course, the main event... the feature creature... we have Dave ("Dave Prowse IS Darth Vader") Prowse as the Creature / Herr Schneider. Actor, bodybuilder, and strongman Dave Prowse carved a unique path in film history. He's best known for portraying Darth Vader (voiced by American actor James Earl Jones) in the original Star Wars trilogy. However, his career stretched far beyond that iconic role. He was a familiar face in the UK as the Green Cross Man, promoting road safety for children. However, in a recurring snub to the beautiful West Country accent, the first two adverts in the series had Prowse's voice dubbed by another actor. Thankfully, he appeared using his own voice in the third advert. Dave won the British heavyweight weightlifting championship for three consecutive years (1962-1964). Leading him to compete for England in the 1962 Commonwealth Games. During his bodybuilding training, he befriended future action stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno. His role as the manservant in Stanley Kubrick's 1971 film, "A Clockwork Orange," caught the eye of Star Wars director George Lucas, which led him to the defining role of Darth Vader. Throughout his film and TV career, Prowse was often typecast with parts such as the circus strongman in Vampire Circus, a Minotaur in (Doctor Who Klaxon)'The Time Monster,' and an android named Coppin in The Tomorrow People.  He supposedly came close to iconic roles, claiming to have nearly landed the part of Jaws in James Bond and being considered for Conan the Barbarian before those parts went to other actors. We are told that Prowse lobbied for the role of Superman in Richard Donner's 1978 film. In a television interview, he recounted his response to being told "we've found our Superman" with a simple "Thank you very much," only to then learn Christopher Reeve had been chosen and Prowse would be his trainer. Finally, it's worth noting that David Prowse made his second appearance as a Frankenstein laboratory creation in this film, his first being in The Horror of Frankenstein (uncredited cameo in 1967's Casino Royale aside). He holds the distinction of being the only actor to play a Hammer Frankenstein's monster more than once. Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. The new season starts off with a bang, heading to the mean streets of Tampa Bay to learn about drug smuggling and murder cover-ups. Despite what the title of the film implies, Mr. No Legs is weirdly absent throughout much of the film...but will that hurt or help it's rating? In the 1978 film "The Amazing Mr. No Legs," a college boy turned drug dealer accidentally kills his girlfriend and seeks the help of the wheelchair-bound Mr. No Legs to solve the problem. The movie is a grindhouse film with elements of drugs, murder, and martial arts. It has gained a cult following and has been praised for its unique premise and low-budget production values. Writer/Director/Actor Mark Gatiss, best known for his work on Doctor Who, Sherlock, Dracula talks about his TV film Count Magnus, and the English tradition of ghost stories at Christmas, and he fascination of true ghost stories. When it comes to the English tradition of telling ghosts stories during Christmas, Charles Dickens still reigns supreme, with medieval scholar M.R. James in a very close second place. But in recent years Mark Gatiss has quickly earned mention alongside those two by reinvigorating the United Kingdom's heritage of holiday horror. Best known for his work on Doctor Who, Sherlock, Dracula and the comedy troupe League of Gentlemen, Gatiss has become the force behind the BBC's revival of A Ghost Story for Christmas series of television films. The original run of annuals was largely helmed by Lawrence Gordon Clark, and aired from 1971 until '78, before returning sporadically in 2005. Gatiss made his directorial debut in 2013 with The Tractate Middoth, the Ghost Story adaptation of James's work. He has since written and directed three more for the series — James adaptations Martin's Close and The Mezzotint, and the original story The Dead Room — along with writing mini-series Crooked House (2008) and writing and directing The Amazing Mr. Blunden (2021) TV film, which both aired at Christmas. Now he is back as writer and director for “Count Magnus,” the long-anticipated adaptation of M.R. James' 1904 work, which airs December 23 on BBC Two, and drops the same day on streaming service BritBox. In this interview Gatiss speaks about his collection of real-life ghost stories, and his love for season's screamings. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On April 5, 1976, the richest man in the world died of medical neglect on board a jet bound for Houston. At the time of his death, Howard Hughes had not been seen in public for nearly twenty years. With a massive fortune that enabled his worsening mental disorders, Hughes, once famous the world over, receded from the public eye, and for the last decades of his life, ruled a vast and often unsuccessful business empire confined entirely to his bed. In time the expansive and opaque system that Hughes engineered to ensure his own isolation grew out of his own control, and as he sat in his penthouse, seeing only seven people in fifteen years, an army of self serving executives made decisions on his affairs entirely without his knowledge. While Hughes seemed to lose money on every transaction, he made a lot of his employees and their friends very wealthy. This story is a tragedy- the tale of a man who was both created and destroyed thanks to his proximity to great wealth, culminating in his own death in conditions so deplorable his corpse had to be identified via fingerprint by the FBI. In his 70 years, Howard Hughes can certainly be said to have left a colorful mark on American history.     This week we bring 2021 to a close with a three pack of movies that are firmly winter holiday adjacent.      Christmas Eve 1918, a lawyer comes to visit Mrs. Allen and her three children. He brings an amazing offer that will get them out of not their squalid apartment and give them a chance to improve their lives greatly. That is, if they don't mind a few ghosts. Before they can say some cockney rhyming slang two of the kids are off on a time leaping adventure that will change their lives forever. Just don't think of The Amazing Mr. Blunden and his paradoxes.     After a month as classifieds editor at the Los Angeles Eye and finding that she has been sleeping with the wrong reporter to get a career boost, wannabe reporter Kim takes matters into her own hands and, without editorial sanction, begins to look into a woman's strange death by spontaneous human combustion. At her very first stop, she becomes the target of a coven of lesbian witches. Crammed full of ideas cut from a previous feature, cult hero Brian Yuzna brings a tale that appropriately hates everyone but loves giant cockroaches. Who will survive Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation?     Three odysseys across LA. Sean Baker's raw and up close ground level view of a distinctive and specific sex-trade subculture. Anchored by three phenomenal central performances and filmed with bleeding edge technique and stuffed with style, Tangerine.     All that and Kevin get serenaded, Dave wonders if Killer Santa was inside him all alone, and Tyler learns the true meaning of Life Day. Join us, won't you?Episode 237- Tangentially Xmas

Radio sleuthing wasn't always a serious business. Some detectives successfully mixed in comedy with their crimesolving, and we'll hear three examples this week. First, Adolphe Menjou and Verree Teasdale as a husband and wife duo in Deductions Deluxe, an audition recording that aired on Forecast (originally aired on CBS on July 28, 1941). Then, Allyn Joslyn stars as The Amazing Mr. Smith in "The Story of the Hooting Owl" (audition recorded on November 5, 1946). Finally, Lloyd Nolan and Claire Trevor are the operatives of the agency Results, Incorporated. They're on the hunt for a missing mummy in this episode (originally aired on Mutual on December 30, 1944).

This is a snippet from Breaking Walls Episode 112: Drama At NBC (1949 - 1950) ____________________ The last series we'll examine from the 1949-50 season made it's NBC debut on Sunday June 11th, 1950 at 7:30PM. It had begun on CBS in 1945, but like many shows launched by NBC this year, it was most recently airing on The Mutual Broadcasting System. It starred radio, film, stage, and TV legend Vincent Price. The series we're speaking about is Price's only continuous starring role: as Simon Templar in The Saint. Leslie Charteris created the character as a suave private eye. He was a dapper dresser, equally at home at the wheel of a fast car, in an airplane, or on horseback. Sometimes the Saint simply broke the law, if the result justified it. This episode “The Corpse Said Ouch” aired on Sunday August 6th opposite The Amazing Mr. Malone on ABC, and Hit The Jackpot on CBS. Shirley Mitchell was Francis Blake and Lawrence Dobkin was Louie the Cabbie.

Jon and Matt had a chance to talk to an incredible performance artist. Joe Hermann (AKA The Amazing Mr. Lifto) has been a touring artist with the Jim Rose Circus. Get ready to clutch your junk in empathetic pain and wonder as Joe tells us some incredible stories about lifting things with his penis; however, he's also an incredibly nice and very real guy and was willing to let us into the extreme world of body modification and how he navigates a world of pleasure and pain. We also got a chance to share some funny stories, conspiracy theories, and can't wait to talk to Joe again, in a strictly "bullshitting," sense, as he is our kind of nerd. Enjoy, Dandies! We certainly did! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/undetermined-podcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/undetermined-podcast/support
