I'm delighted to speak with UEFA football coach and lecturer, James Barraclough this week. James has worked as a football coach for over 20 years. He has coached extensively in academies and holds both the UEFA B and FA Advanced Youth Awards. James has an MSc in Sport Psychology and has consulted with athletes and teams from grassroots up to world champions. He is currently undertaking a Professional Doctorate in Elite Performance examining psychosocial skills in academy football.  James teaches Sports Coaching and Sport Science at UCEN Manchester. He is also a sport performance consultant supporting a number of mixed martial artists, athletes and football teams. In this episode James and I discuss a paper he led along with Prof David Grecic and Dr Damian Harper which looked at academy managers' experiences of how psychosocial skills and characteristics are identified and developed in youth academy soccer players.

This episode of the Pacey Performance Podcast sees Rob speaking to Damian Harper, Mark Jamison and Ted Rath. This episode was recorded in the summer of 2021 as a Live roundtable. But it was that good that we had to release it as a podcast.  Anyone who is interested in deceleration will know the name Damian Harper. And its Damian who kicks off this chat with a detailed dive into what the research says about the importance of deceleration. Mark then gives us his thoughts on how we test it based on some of Damian's work. This area is super interesting as its been so under utilised but with advances in technology it can be a relatively simple process. To conclude part 1, Ted gives us his thoughts on what qualities are needed to enhance deceleration ability and the need for developing eccentric strength. Part 2 is all about gym based and on-field based interventions to improve deceleration ability. Ted takes the gym based interventions whereas Damian and Mark attack the on-field interventions. They answer the crucial questions, "how can we coach our athletes into more effective deceleration positions?" If you're interested in learning more about the growing area of deceleration, check out this episode. Main talking points -  What does the research say about the importance of training deceleration? Testing deceleration ability in the field The acceleration-deceleration ability (ADA) test What physical qualities are needed to decelerate effectively on the field/court Developing eccentric strength to improve deceleration ability Gym based interventions to improve deceleration ability On-field interventions to improve technical deceleration ability

The debate about the transfer of change of direction and agility training is a bit like the debate about general and specific training. Specificity is a critical factor, but not all general training is the same. And specific training can also be counterproductive if you don't understand what you're training for. On this weeks GAINcast, Bill Knowles joins us to discuss how he sees the spectrum of agility training and how a purposeful approach can improve performance all along the spectrum. This week on the Pacey Performance Podcast, Rob is speaking to Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Joey Guarascio. Joey has previously held positions at Colorado State, and Ole Miss before landing at FAU in 2020. Deceleration testing and training is getting more and more attention both in research and in practice, and rightly so. Joey has recently written about his thoughts on deceleration and its this topic Rob chats with him about in this episode. We kick our discussion on how he integrates some of Damian Harper's deceleration assessments into his larger battery of tests at FAU. Joey emphasises the need for specific deceleration assessment versus thinking that a change of direction test will tell us what we need to know. We then chat about building the qualities needed to improve deceleration ability, firstly in the weightroom and then out on the field. Joey explains how he uses eccentric training at various different levels to build the engine and then the drill he uses on the field to refine technique. If you're looking to include deceleration assessments into your testing battery or want an insight into what exercises translate to improved deceleration ability on the field, give this a listen. Main talking points -  Why deceleration so important How to test deceleration ability The qualities underpinning better deceleration performance On-field strategies to develop a player's deceleration performance Off-field strategies to develop a player's deceleration performance The use of eccentrics Sub-max eccentric exercise prescription Supra-max eccentric prescription How to maximise eccentric training strategies in team environments

Damian Harper is our guest on this week's Pacey Performance Podcast, bringing with him a wealth of wide-ranging experience in coaching and strength and conditioning. Damian is currently working in the Institute of Coaching and Performance at UCLAN, supervising students on professional masters and doctorates in elite performance. He's also a member of UCLAN's newly developed football performance hub, developing the human braking research group following his PhD. Prior to his time with UCLAN, Damian lectured in exercise physiology at York St John University, coached at the Bobby Charlton Soccer School, and earned his master's degree while working with sports clubs in his local area. One of which was St. Albans Rugby Club, where he developed the 10/05 repeated jump test. This test, amongst other jump testing options, and deceleration testing and training, is what he discusses today. With a huge depth of academic and first-hand experience of strength and conditioning harking back to his days as a footballer, there are very few individuals better placed to give their insight into S&C. Listen to this week podcast below to learn more about how Damian builds effective deceleration and change of direction, without succumbing to injury. This week's topics: 10/5 repeat jumps and why Damian uses them over other options Why deceleration is so important Why it's important to ‘test the brakes' of an athlete How to find the sweet spot of the acceleration-deceleration ability (ADA) test The tech needed to run the ADA test – and other options available Exercises that can measure an athlete's ability to decelerate effectively How to improve deceleration performance The use of eccentric approaches during training Increasing intensity of decelerations during small-sided games Where to look and who to listen for on the subject of deceleration
