When things are simple and grounded, athletes feel safe to go all-in. What to try: Open sessions with minimal barriers, simple tasks that athletes can immediately attack. Anchor your program in clear, foundational principles. Avoid over-layering. Use simplicity to build confidence before introducing complexity. Is Complexity Distracting Us from What Actually Matters? – [6:08] Tim reflects on times when adding more didn't add value. Too much complexity can distract from what makes athletes feel fast, powerful, or confident. What to try: If a drill looks cool but the athletes are confused, simplify. Choose training elements that resonate emotionally and physically with athletes. Prioritize what sticks with them, not what looks best on social media. What Are Athletes Actually Feeling During a Drill? – [11:55] Tim discusses the disconnect between what coaches see and what athletes actually experience. You won't know unless you ask. What to try: Regularly pause to ask: “What did that feel like?” Adjust based on athlete feedback, even if it means letting go of your favorite drill. Use sensation-based questions to help athletes build awareness (“Did you feel the bounce off the floor?”). How Do We Make Coaching Feel Less Robotic? – [18:42] Athletes shut down when things feel overly mechanical. Tim points out that meaningful training often happens in the gray areas, not the rigidly planned ones. What to try: Let warmups flow with energy, don't always stick to a static script. Mix structure with spontaneity. Athletes should feel like they're moving, not executing code. Lean into athlete body language. Adjust volume and tone on the fly. What If the Goal Isn't Perfection, But Exploration? – [25:30] Tim encourages a shift from perfect execution to active exploration. Growth comes from seeing what might work, not just repeating what's safe. What to try: Create “choose your own path” movement options in skill work. Use sessions that feel like problem-solving, not rehearsing. Acknowledge when athletes take a risk, even if the result isn't clean. Can We Trust Athletes to Self-Organize? – [32:09]

Former collegiate hockey athlete Cole Hergott thrived in the offseason, but it took a setback to accelerate his path in strength and conditioning. After losing his spot on the team, he channeled his work ethic into interning with Trinity Western University. Years later, he returned to his alma mater as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach. Only 25 at the time, Hergott recounts the unique challenge of coaching athletes who were older or previous classmates. Leading over 300 athletes as the sole full-time strength and conditioning coach, he quickly learned to “write all your plans in pencil,” while building trust, optimizing logistics, and adapting through COVID-19 disruptions. Hergott emphasizes mentorship and encourages coaches to lean on those who navigated similar challenges. As part of the NSCA British Columbia Advisory Board, he encourages listeners to share their practical insights at local events. Hergott’s journey underscores the value of continual growth and embracing uncertainty. Call people, text people, send emails, ask questions. We talked about mentors. Lean on your mentors because they've been there. They've made the mistakes. I've made the mistakes and I continue to make mistakes every day, but I think that's how you learn and grow.” 11:05 “Strength and conditioning is not something that we're just going to figure out and somebody's going to have all the answers. As I talked about before, there's more than one way to skin a cat. And so it's important to learn from a bunch of people who maybe think differently than you so that you can continue to get good results.” 11:30 “I'd say if you're somebody who's looking to speak, find something that you're good at, something that you are passionate about, that you like to speak about, that you're good at. And then don't be afraid to reach out to your advisory board…” 16:15

Today's podcast features Derek Hansen. Derek is a renowned International Sport Performance Consultant with over 35 years of experience working with athletes across all levels and disciplines in speed, strength, and power sports. Derek started in Track and Field and continued in sports performance to work with numerous athletes in the NFL, NBA, MLS, and NHL, along with Olympic medalists. As the former Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for Simon Fraser University—NCAA's first non-U.S. member—Derek now specializes in speed development, performance planning, and return-to-competition protocols. If we zoom out and scan decades of fitness and human performance, we see methods go in, and out of style. In our current realm of athletics, we have put speed and power outputs heavily under the microscope, while energy system development and aerobic training have been played down (along with general physical education and physical competencies in young athletes). In looking at injury rates and longevity of athletes, it's important to take a look at where we may be pushing too far, and where gaps need to be filled. On today's episode, Derek covers the pendulum swing, and the importance of aerobic development, even in speed and power-seeking athletes. He also gets into the modern direction of acceleration training, as team sport training has moved into heavier resisted training protocols, relative to the past. Derek also touches on the artful side of training and coaching, mindfulness, overspeed sprint training, simplicity of programming application, and much more. So one of the simplest things when I was working with Charlie Francis was he would have very complicated, complex explanations for things, but sometimes he would say, like, you know, oh, what's this person's problem? Well, they're just tight. You just need to loosen them up. That would be the end of the conversation” (9:51) "It's kind of like the bro science has kind of taken over basic physiology and I think it's, it's kind of hurt us." It was time to bring back Charlie Weingroff for Episode 169 to talk about some serious stuff. Charlie and Don had a private conversation a few weeks ago on the subject of scientific research in health, wellness and performance, and where it fits in the selection of protocols, exercises and other key ingredients for optimal performance and health. While some practitioners are quick to support their own positions with research papers, or argue against another professional's methods using peer reviewed research as a basis, we discuss the nuances of using research in an intelligent manner. Practical experience, case studies, intuition and research can form a strong foundation of knowledge and skill that can go a long way to bolster the work of a successful practitioner or coach. Charlie identifies the key elements that go into establishing foundational knowledge and practice. Dr. Charlie Weingroff is one of the most sought-after professionals world-wide in physical therapy and athletic performance. He is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a Certified Athletic Trainer, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist who has worked with countless A-List celebrities, professional athletes, as well as the general population. Charlie has been Physical Performance Lead and Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Canadian Men's National Basketball Team from 2011-2021, where he was the architect along with Sam Gibbs of the performance program that tops all foreign countries with a over 20 active players in the NBA. He often lectures overseas often, and his relationship with Beijing Yanding Trading Company has brought him through mainland China for the last 5 years. Previous roles Charlie has held have been Nike Executive Performance Council, Lead Physical Therapist for the United States Marine Corps Special Operations Command, Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA, and Director of Athletic Development for the Roddick-Grunberg Tennis Academy. Episode 124: Last month I shared that I helped co-author a book called, There's More Than 1 Way to Skin A Cat. We've got 2 NBA, 3 Division 1 and 5 European Basketball performance coaches contributing to chapters on mobility, stability, power, agility, periodization and recovery. I received my copies of the book last month and they turned out awesome. For anyone wanting to buy a copy, make sure you reach out to @silk_man on Instagram, and Luka will take care of you. And so Today's episode is another sneak peak into our book, where I interview the 9 coaches and ask, “what's your thought process on reducing ankle sprains.” And then you get to hear exactly how the Chicago Bulls, Denver Nuggets, Kansas Jayhawks and Louisville Cardinals do it here in the states. And you'll also get to hear how professional teams in Istanbul, Brescia, Jerusalem, Slovan and Maccabi do it in the European Leagues. My goal for this episode is to prove that there really is more than one way to train & condition basketball players.
