At 11 I got introduced to strength training and I've been on that journey for the last 40 years of just trying to find out how to be the strongest I can be. So that took me all over the world to learn from all kinds of people academically as an athlete. And at the moment I'm a professor of strength. Dan Cooper Masters in Sport Science, PHD Student, Former SASR- Do You Have The Resources Available To Solve The Problem In Front Of You?

Today I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dan Cooper- a Man of Extremes. So much so, that one of his spare time endeavours saw him single handedly walk 1000 miles across Alaska, on foot, pulling his pulk behind him. He is a 22 yr military veteran, 18 years of which was with SASR, Australia's tier one Special Forces Unit. He is also a Former Strength & Power Coach for the Queensland Reds Rugby Team, holds a Masters in Sport Science and is currently completing his PHD. Dan was open to sharing his knowledge gained from his studies, his Special Forces experience and his time contributing to the Human Performance Cell at SASR. He closely studies how people respond under fear, and his answers on this, and the psycho-biological model of fatigue will surprise and help you do better in any field. We spoke about females entering into Special Forces, Executive Performance, Toughness and Resilience, Stress Inoculation and Cognitive Perception. Dan stated that Sleep, Nutrition and Movement are the 3 keys to resilience and we spoke about teenagers being undernourished, sleep deprived and spending so much time on devices that de-evolution is occurring. One part I loved was when he spoke about “Away From” goals vs “Towards” goals. These are just a small part of an amazing conversation with a very educated man who really can walk his talk. This week on the podcast Mikki speaks to one of the OGs in the nutrition education space, Dr Alan Aragon. To say that he has been around a long while would be an understatement, and this isn't said in reflection of his age, more the years that he has spent creating and sharing nutrition content, in both the gym/fitness space and also in the academic space. In this interview, Mikki and Alan discuss his background in training and nutrition, before moving on to his book ‘flexible dieting' which is written for anyone wanting to optimise their body composition. They talk about a range of different concepts around weight loss, including his method of figuring out energy requirements for fat loss, what his protein recommendations are, how to track calories in a way that doesn't drive someone insane, how to calorie cycle appropriately and what ‘safe' weight loss is. And much more. Enjoy.Alan Aragon is a nutrition researcher and educator with over 30 years of success in the field. He is known as one of the most influential figures in the fitness industry's movement towards evidence-based information. RUN Over Thanksgiving, we participated in the 43rd Annual Fort Myers Turkey Trot 5K hosted at the Edison Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers.    Jessica and Kelly from the Runcation Nation were there with their families.  Kelly's children volunteered at the water stop, and Jessica's son ran the race with friends.  We experienced this race on a brand new course throughout the beautiful neighborhoods around the historic site.   EAT We have found a new dessert tradition for the holidays!  Dana discovered a Cookie Butter Pie.  We both love the Biscoff cookies we get on airplanes.   He found it through social media.  Cookie Butter Pie Video is available on TikTok at the following link: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTR4gfyFG/  This recipe did not disappoint.  If you are a fan of those cookies… make this dessert!  It was the sleeper hit of Thanksgiving with our family, and now they want it at Christmas too! Here are the ingredients we used (These are Amazon affiliate links.  If you choose to make the recipe and order from Amazon, it helps support the show at no extra cost to you.):   Biscoff Cookies (1- 8 oz package)  https://amzn.to/3h2G80Z   Unsalted Butter (4 tablespoons) https://amzn.to/3Y37TH7  Jar of Biscoff Cookie Butter (14.1 ounces) https://amzn.to/3VE7ZTT  Cream Cheese (8 ounces)  https://amzn.to/3Hjf2wX   Confectionary Sugar (1 cup) https://amzn.to/3UDSCd6  Vanilla (to taste) https://amzn.to/3Y2GGo2  Salt (1/4 teaspoon) https://amzn.to/3BfGbNO  Heavy Cream (1 1/4 cup) https://amzn.to/3W4awa1  We aren't going to lie…  We used whipped cream that was made already to top the pie (as much as you would like) https://amzn.to/3UzdMcg  DRINK Right in the neighborhood where we ran is one of our favorite breweries, Coastal Dayz Brewery.  We are fans of winter brews, and new owner Alex Tatko created a tasty Winter Ale for us to try this week.  Holiday spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and subtle notes of orange zest, molasses, and vanilla?  Yes, please.  Thanks, Alex!  It is a mighty tasty way to get us into the holiday spirit. This week I'm delighted to speak to Prof Joe Baker. Joe is the Head of the Lifespan Performance Laboratory in the School of Kinesiology and Health Science, at York University, Canada. Previously Joe has held visiting researcher/professor positions in the Carnegie Research Institute at Leeds Metropolitan University UK, Victoria University, Australia, the Australian Institute of Sport and the Institute of Sport Science at Westflische Wilhelms-Universitat Münster in Germany. Joe's research focuses on optimal human development, largely to understand how someone gets to, and stays at, the highest levels of performance. His previous research in this area has considered various psychosocial and environmental factors influencing athletic skill development across a range of sports. Joe is the Past President of the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology and the author/editor of 5 journal special issues and more than 300 peer reviewed articles, commentaries, position statements and 14 books. And it's his latest book ‘The Tyranny of Talent: How it compels and limits athletic achievement… and why you should ignore it' that is the topic of this podcast. The book explores the elements that affect people's likelihood of success, starting with a thorough discussion of what 'talent' is, why both nature and nurture are critical factors, and why this distinction no longer matters. For many coaches, parents, and athletes, misunderstandings about ‘talent' continue to constrain how they think about their long-term development and achievement.

RUN The Florida Run 10K Trail Run in Clermont, Florida at Lake Louisa State Park was a great event for us to get some distance in and meet some great new people at the same time.   We got up super early and drove to Clermont, which is close to the Orlando area, to run our 2nd EVER trail run at this event. We love the shirt, medal, and the lessons we learned on the trail!   Shout to to Loren, Gail, and Leslie.  We met these three great people before the race.  Gail and Leslie walked the race with us while Loren ran the half marathon event.   EAT  Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend is an opportunity sample some great food from some of the first booths we experienced at the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival.  There are some we have missed so much for a few years.    Welcome back, Greece!  This is the first time we have covered this booth on our show,  but it is one of the OG booths we fell in love with at this festival.  DRINK Belgium, man… Belgium.  This booth had a great beer flight from some great breweries we love.  It also started to get us into the festive fall and holiday spirit for November and December.  St. Bernardus Witbier, Belgian Abbey Ale, and Delirium Red Fruit Ale are tasty brews we sampled in this Belgium beer flight.  We play back our review from our visit to Belgium in the World Showcase on this week's show.   Can't wait to get back to this one or get some St. Bernardus  or Delirium brews for the holidays here at home!   THAT'S A WRAP!
