His transition into performance coaching began at Leicester Tigers, where he initially combined a player-coach role with S&C responsibilities before moving fully into the performance department. Matt has since built extensive experience across both rugby union and rugby league. Maynooth University's (MU) has announced the launch of 25 new Faculty of Science & Engineering (FSE) ARDÚ Doctoral Scholarships, marking a major investment in the next generation of research talent and innovation. The FSE ARDÚ Doctoral Scholarships will support 25 PhD research students across three of the University's Research Beacons: Data Science and Digital Transformation, Health and Wellbeing, and Sustainability and Climate Change. The scholarships will fund cutting-edge research projects spanning areas such as health and disease, AI-driven healthcare analytics, and the molecular understanding of advanced materials. MU's FSE has a strong track record of delivering research that combines fundamental discovery with real-world impact. Across the faculty, researchers are addressing major challenges in health, sustainability, and digital transformation through collaborative research. By bringing together expertise from across disciplines, the ARDÚ programme will give doctoral research students the opportunity to work in a dynamic and supportive research environment while contributing to internationally recognised research. The programme reflects the faculty's strengths in computational and data science, advanced materials and physical sciences, and health, psychology, and human-centred research, supporting interdisciplinary approaches to complex real-world challenges. The 2026 Men's World Cup will place unprecedented demands on international teams: 48 nations, 104 matches and a tournament staged across Canada, Mexico and the United States, with teams required to manage heat, humidity, altitude, travel and limited recovery time. Matt Thome is the Director of the Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory (NAPL) at University of Nebraska Athletic Department, where he leads applied sport science initiatives focused on technology integration, athlete monitoring, training strategies, and return-to-play processes to optimize performance and athlete health.Before Nebraska, Thome worked as a Sport Scientist at ALTIS supporting Olympic-level sprinters through monitoring, research, and strength training programming. This week, Richard Graves is joined by Carmen Bott, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, kinesiologist, sports performance coach and educator with more than two decades of hands-on experience working with athletes across youth, high performance and professional sport. Carmen specialises in ACL rehabilitation, return to play, collision sport athletes, multi-directional speed, and mental performance coaching. In this episode, Carmen shares the story of her career, from an unexpected switch from behavioural psychology and criminology into kinesiology, through to working with university teams, NHL athletes, national-level performers and young athletes returning from serious injury. The conversation explores what kinesiology actually means, how it sits alongside strength and conditioning, and why understanding the sport is just as important as understanding the science. BUFFALO, NY — March 25, 2026 — A new #review was #published in Volume 18 of Aging-US on March 18, 2026, titled “What are the effects of exergames on the mood states of older people? A systematic review of experimental studies, impacts on mental health and recommendations.” Led by Camile de Bem Gaspar and Whyllerton Mayron da Cruz, with corresponding author Alexandro Andrade, all from the Laboratory of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Human Movement Sciences Graduate Program, College of Health and Sport Science of the Santa Catarina State University (UDESC) in Florianópolis, Brazil, the review examined whether exergames can influence mood in older adults. The authors followed systematic review and meta-analysis methods, screened 651 studies, and found nine that met the inclusion criteria, representing 325 participants aged 61 to 78.9 years. The review found that exergames were associated with better mood outcomes, including reductions in tension, anger, fatigue, confusion, and depressive symptoms, while also promoting engagement, immersion, and socialization. In the studies that measured mood more broadly, participants described exergames as improving well-being and emotional state, and no included study reported worsened mood after participation. “The results indicate that the practice of exergames had a positive effect on the mood of older adults.” The authors note, however, that the evidence base remains small and heterogeneous, with only nine eligible trials and several different mood measures used across studies. They call for longer-term interventions, larger and more diverse samples, and additional home-based or low-cost exergame studies to determine how durable the benefits are and how best to recommend them for older adults in real-world settings. Expectations for strength and conditioning coaches now extend far beyond the weight room. Athletes and sport coaches demand better data, deeper insight, and stronger performance. Faith Brown, Associate Director of Strength and Conditioning at George Mason University, supports women’s basketball and volleyball while collaborating with the Patriot Performance Lab. Brown describes balancing teams, testing, and athlete monitoring as a “circus act.” At the heart of her coaching is one goal: be the coach she wishes she had as a college track athlete.
