From Burdock to Blood Cleansers: dive into the power of alterative herbs with Sebastian Pole and today's guest Graeme Tobyn. With over a quarter-century of expertise, Graeme brings his wealth of knowledge from his roles as a herbalist, educator, and author, currently enriching minds at the University of Lancashire.About Graeme: Graeme Tobyn graduated from Leeds University in 1978 with a degree in Russian with Italian. He developed the Latin and French he learned at school for use in his later studies of the histories of Renaissance and early modern medicine. He trained in herbal medicine in the 1980s, graduating with the top award and, after a six-month engagement as a phlebotomist at University College Hospital, London, entered practice in 1990 as a herbalist and member (later fellow) of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists. He became a herbal trainer in 1993, working at several NIMH training clinics, and switched to external clinical examiner for two BSc Herbal Medicine programmes from 2007. In 2000 he joined UCLan as a senior lecturer and took over the leadership of the BSc Herbal Medicine there the following year. His teaching focus on the programme (2001-2012) was in clinical examination skills and therapeutics. He completed his PGDipHE in 2005. Since 2011 he has been leader of the MSc Herbal Medicine, and in 2016 took over the running of the MSc Integrated Healthcare. In 2015 he was visiting botanical medicine scholar at Bastyr university, Seattle, USA. In 2017 he was awarded a PhD in the history of medicine from Lancaster University. In this lively discussion, Sebastian and Graeme dissect the controversial and often misunderstood category of alteratives. They explore the historical context and evolution of this herbal action, questioning its relevance and application in modern herbal practice. Graeme challenges the retreat from robust treatments like stimulant laxatives and advocates for a reinvigoration of traditional, potent herbal therapies. The episode delves into the semantics of herbal medicine, questioning the adoption of terms like 'anti-inflammatory' and 'immunomodulator' and calling for a return to a language that truly reflects the dynamic nature of herbs. Pete has also written, produced and directed award-winning short films that have been used globally to raise awareness and understanding of mental health and neurodiversity. Mark joins Rob for an all-encompassing conversation about what drew him to life in service of others and making sure they are healthy and well, how he managed to rise to the top of his sector, and why dedication, hard work, resilience matter so much. KEY TAKEAWAYS We are sometimes drawn to the world of football, but it can take time to realise that playing the game isn't always necessary. There are many different pursuits that sit inside the game itself. We don't always have the perspective needed when we're young. it can be hard to keep our focus and look to the future. Finding our niche as a child is difficult. It takes dedication to get to the top, and also a great deal of hard work. You can love a subject, but fail to succeed because you don't want to put in the hard yards. Never be afraid to change your course if your instincts are telling you to follow a different path. Your instincts are always trying to guide you towards something better. BEST MOMENTS 'I've always been interested in football in particular' 'The onus is on the individual to use it or lose it' 'You don't get anywhere without inspiration, desire and hard work' 'I never really viewed this as work' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast      ABOUT THE GUEST Mark Leather qualified as a physiotherapist in 1983 where he spent 4 years in the NHS before moving into professional football. She holds a Ph.D. in Culture Enabled Food Safety and has created a network of worldwide collaborators within the food supply chain. After 11 years with Maple Leaf Foods—including an uphill battle to regain consumer trust following the 2008 tragedy that killed 23 people—Dr. Jespersen's life purpose shifted. At the time, she was in charge of food safety and operations learning strategies. After much introspection, questioning, and scrutiny, Dr. Jespersen led the relaunch and execution of Maple Leaf Foods' food safety and operations learning strategies, transforming the company's food safety culture from the inside out. Carol Wallace, Ph.D., is a Professor of Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS), Co-Director of the Nutritional Sciences and Applied Food Safety Studies Group, and the Research Lead for the School of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in the UK. Rob speaks with Sally Needham, a Development and Performance Culture Lead at Sheffield United Football Club.Sally spent 13 years at The FA within the skills programme and then as a county coach developer and holds the UEFA A Licence and the Advanced Youth Award (5-11). Sally is a Thrive Practitioner, where she has taken the latest in neuroscience, child development and attachment theory and applied it into football. Along with being a Coach Developer for The FA and Consultant at 4Growth, she is currently at UCLAN doing a Professional Doctorate in Elite Performance.     Sally and Rob discuss her journey to being a child development specialist working in football, her position in Sheffield United, how modern psychological science is applied practically in coaching and techniques that are used with young people to nurture them as balanced human beings as well as footballers.     KEY TAKEAWAYS Through a job at Barnsley College helping with coaching and a healthy interest in football, Sally took a Sport and Exercise Science Degree at Leeds Metropolitan University. Sally fully learned her trade in coaching working with the 5-11 age group for the Advanced Youth Award. After gaining an interest in the psychological and social aspect of young peoples development, Sally studied brain development, child development, attachment theory and modern neuroscience and is currently studying for her Doctorate in Elite Performance. Sheffield United's mantra is ‘Outrun, Outfight, Outplay'.   Having the backing of the best people at Sheffield has allowed Sally to implement her psychological knowledge to the coaching of young players. Sally explains the science to her students, demonstrates the benefit in football and then practically applies it. With dysregulation, our thinking, behaviour, heart rate and breathing can become erratic. We might feel panic or depression out of nowhere, or our emotions can suddenly explode and flood us with adrenaline (the fight/flight response). Sheffield has adopted the techniques for training that the knowledge of science offers and applied it to their development plans for young players including psychological techniques previously and traditionally untried in youth football arena. BEST MOMENTS  ‘At the time there were only two or three females in the country tutoring so I went in down that route and started tutoring when I was about 22 or 23 which was quite unique at the time being female and quite young still.' – Sally ‘It's a great story and its littered with characters from the game; Pete Sturgess. I've watched Pete coach and and I can't tell you, for me, a better relater to young players than I've seen with him.' - Rob ‘I think the biggest thing for us, and I say this quite a lot, is you can give people the ingredients but if they haven't got the recipe then they're only going to hit so far.' – Sally ‘I think sometimes we perceive it that the boys are not going to buy into it, but a lot of the lads when they do it really enjoy it.' – Sally ‘When you do fist bumps or thumbs up or checking in and checking out, it's a big indicator that if a child wants a fist bump and the next three weeks doesn't want any bodily contact it's a red flag. So it gives us an understanding of what's going off in that child.' – Sally   VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach Podcast      ABOUT THE HOST   Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. Something a bit different this week as Alexa is joined by two guests. Cat Ogden is a singer and vocal coach who specialises in singing for mental health and wellbeing, and she is alongside founder of Sing Now, Sarah Joyce. As you'll see from the episode title, congratulations are in order as both guests on Singing Teachers Talk are expecting, so the topic of conversation today is all around understanding pregnancy for the singer and the self-employed.   KEY TAKEAWAYS In Dr Catherine Gardner's report, she notes that the common physical experiences of pregnancy such as nausea, vomiting, breathlessness, swelling, reflux, difficulty sleeping, and fatigue were sometimes made worse by singing. Cat experienced debilitating sickness while pregnant with her second child which led to vomiting, weight loss, and hospitalisation. As someone who is self-employed, there was nobody to fall back on while she was ill. There was no one else to take her students' lessons and she had to do it all herself.  The vomiting she experienced while ill affected Cat's voice but she was able to find support from Pregnancy Sickness Support, which is linked in the notes below.  The positive impacts that pregnant women brought up in Dr Gardner's research included greater breath awareness, reduced performance anxiety and the ability to refocus priorities.    BEST MOMENTS ‘I was literally vomiting either side of lessons'  ‘Acid reflux through trimesters 1, 2, and 3 was a really big one for me'  ‘When it comes to performing I'm more relaxed than I ever have been'   EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training    Guest Website: sarah-joyce.co.uk sing-now.co.uk catogdensinging.com   Social Media:  @sarahjoycesing @catogdensinging   Relevant Links & Mentions:  Singing Teachers Talk Podcast: Episode 55 - Teaching Singing for Mental Health and Wellbeing with Cat Ogden: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7EE00DU5gciDilLMAfq1SG?si=50834e119d7141e8 Dr Catherine Gardner: singingfortwo.com Vocal Health Education: vocalhealtlh.co.uk Pregnancy Sickness Support: https://www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/; @pregnancysicknesssupport Medication List: https://ncvs.org/prescriptions/ Happy Mum Happy Baby Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/1q5dLwCTmrU4XNEy8cXyBX?si=c046318def5344e8 ABOUT THE GUEST  Sarah Joyce: On graduating from Guildford School of Acting in 2008, Sarah made her West End debut in Zorro at the Garrick Theatre, covering and playing the lead female role, Luisa. This was followed by a world tour as principal singer on board Cunard's renowned Queen Victoria. Sarah then toured the UK with the 25th anniversary production of Phantom of the Opera, covering and playing Madame Giry, and appeared in the London Palladium production of Scrooge starring Tommy Steele, where she played Mrs Cratchit. As well as running her own choir in Surbiton, Sarah gigs with the London Contemporary Voices and is lead singer for the Soultanas, funk & soul band. In addition, Sarah enjoys working as a vocal coach at her studio in Guildford as well as teaching at Italia Conti and the University of Creative Arts. She holds a certificate in vocal health first aid from Vocal Health Education, and is now a Vocal Habilitation Professional.   Cat Ogden: Cat Ogden trained at UCLan in Music Theatre and is currently studying for a Master's in Voice Pedagogy with the Voice Study Centre. Vocal coach and mental health first aider, Cat Ogden joins Bronwyn this week on Singing Teachers Talk to discuss the topics of well being and mental health. Cat's studio specialises in singing for mental health and wellbeing and she is also studying for a masters where her research work focuses on adolescent mental health.    KEY TAKEAWAYS Self care isn't taking yourself on a spa day and it's not a selfish thing to do. It's about taking time for yourself.  You cannot support those around you or do your job to the best of your ability if you are not taking time for self care.  Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood. ACEs can include violence, abuse, and growing up in a family with mental health or substance use problems. Toxic stress from ACEs can change brain development and affect how the body responds to stress. We never stop learning, not only to become a better singer and a better vocal coach, but also because things change, new ideas and new information becomes available.    BEST MOMENTS ‘Absolutely everyone should practice self care' ‘I can't ever imagine a point in my life where I'm not learning about the voice'  ‘The BAST course is the best thing I've ever done, it's given me so many opportunities'    EPISODE RESOURCES  BAST Training  Guest Website: https://catogdensinging.com/ Social Media:  @catogdensinging Relevant Links & Mentions:  Adverse Childhood Experiences ABOUT THE GUEST  Cat Ogden trained at UCLan in Music Theatre and is currently studying for a Master's in Voice Pedagogy with the Voice Study Centre. Missing episode enthusiasts Paul and Tim think they've hit on a Varga-ood idea: tracking down lost TV signals in outer space… After they've tackled that thorny issue, they set about a more realistic goal: reviewing the Season 3 one-part story Mission to the Unknown.   Mission acts as a trailer for the forthcoming twelve-part epic “The Daleks’ Master Plan” - but does it do its job? Is the Doctor-less experiment successful in its own right? And can Paul and Tim keep track of three characters’ names in a 25 minute piece of television drama?   This time they are joined by Andrew Ireland from the University of Central Lancashire. The driving force behind the wonderful 2019 live action recreation of the story, Andrew   brings his deep understanding of Mission to the team's discussion of the story, and adds a host of insights into the virtues of 1960’s TV production methods.   In 2019, Andrew also appeared on our good friend Richard Smith’s “Something Who” podcast and gave fascinating testimony to the production of the UCLAN project. We highly recommend not only revisiting this podcast first, but also Richard’s review of the story which features all manner of Delegatory delights with author Jac Rayner (plus a couple of voices which may sound familiar). They can be found here:   https://somethingwho.podbean.com/e/episode-55a-andrew-ireland/   https://somethingwho.podbean.com/e/episode-55-transmission-of-the-unknown/   Three Varga-ood podcasts for the price of one! (Oh no, we've done that joke.)   If you enjoy this podcast, we'd love it if you shared it on social media to help us find our audience! Tim is on Twitter @drwhopodcasters, Paul @mrpaulmorris and please do come and like our Facebook page.   This free podcast borrows snippets of music from “Marche, Les Structures Sonores” – Lasry Baschet. Posh restaurant music is borrowed from Luigi Boccherini. Melodramatic music samples are lovingly pinched from the original BBC production of Mission to the Unknown.

This week on the #wednesdaywellbeing show I'm chstting with The President and founder of the CMA JayneyGoddard.  Jayney has spent many years studying mind, body medicine. She is one of the world's leading experts in the natural youth and anti-ageing arena and it's her mission to empower you with all the tips and techniques you need, to look smoking hot AND be happier, healthier, brainier, sexier, stress resilient, leaner, energetic and more joyful than you ever imagined!  Initially a ballerina, Jayney “accidentally” joined the circus as an aerial artiste, which required travel to some of the most far-flung and primitive places in the world. During this time, when there was no access to conventional medicines, she witnessed first-hand the phenomenal power of natural, folk medicines and it was this that inspired her to train in a range of complementary medical disciplines.  Jayney is now founder and president of The Complementary Medicine Association (The CMA) and founder and co-chair of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine. She has a Master of Science post-graduate degree from UCLan, England; trained in Mind/Body Medicine at Harvard Medical School, USA, under Dr Herbert Benson (the “father” of Mind/ Body Medicine); and runs an international practice in which she uses a range of natural medicine approaches to help clients reach their fullest health potential.   Due to Jayney's extensive training, she always ensures her recommendations are grounded in robust scientific research – so that both her clients, and readers, know her suggestions are fully proven to work.  Jayney says, “Mindset is 99 per cent of the battle. If I can do it, you can too! And I'm here to be your guide on this incredible journey.”  Why Jayney is so passionate about natural approaches to wellness and natural antiaging:  Over the last 30 years, Jayney has dedicated her life to working with people suffering from chronic lifestyle-related conditions, as she herself experienced a life-threatening illness that left her wheelchair-bound for ten years. At her lowest point, she was in hospice care, weighing only 5.5 stone (35kg; 77lbs), and not expected to survive. As a result, she aged dramatically from a “biological” perspective, measuring in at 55 when she was, in reality, only 36. However, Jayney knew in her heart that she had the ability to beat the illness via natural methods, and she did! After coming up with all the recommendations that she writes about in her latest book; “Rewind Your Body Clock – The Complete Natural Guide to a Happier, Healthier, Younger You”, Jayney managed not only to get healthy – but also to rewind her own body clock in the process! Now 55, Jayney's biological clock shows that her body, mind and physical capabilities are a mere 27!Support the show (https://www.paypal.me/AJHarrison27)

It’s time for the Watchers to cover the only Doctor Who story ever to not feature any of the main cast (and the very first standalone episode...ish) – Mission to the Unknown! With this story being another one that’s missing, the team were fortunate to be discussing this one just after the remount hit YouTube.   Along the way, Anthony is still blaming Richard Martin for things (even though this is the third story since his final involvement with the show), Julie ponders why the Daleks would lower themselves to an alliance with lesser species, Reilly announces his names for the various delegates (having decided that it’s impossible to tell which one is which from the names alone), and Don laments the incompetence of the "hero" of the episode, Marc Cory. The team wraps up with a hearty discussion on the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) remake of the episode.   For those who want to watch along with us, you can find the missing episode on narrated audio through either Amazon US (as part of a set with The Daleks’ Master Plan) or Amazon UK (as part of the The Lost TV Episodes: Collection One box set) If you want to watch the reconstruction, you should Google it – we don’t want to be naughty by posting a link to Dailymotion *cough*. He is currently working as a lecturer in sports coaching at the University of Central Lancashire and is working towards his PhD in Talent Development. The conversation covers the following: - The 'synoptical approach' and how it can be used to create a more multi dimensional athlete way of developing young people- How the use of games that don't look like the sport can be effective in supporting development - Stuart's manual for talent developers that he is currently writing- Why using specialists from other sports can have limitations - Karl Newell's model of 'Assembly - control - optimisation'
