Another packed episode of The Cycling Podcast from the Giro d’Italia comes from the shores of Lake Como after stage 15. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe recap a day during which the two-man break stayed clear to contest the finish – although they only stayed away by 11 seconds in the end. The victory went to Dario Cataldo ahead of his breakaway companion Mattia Cattaneo but they had Simon Yates, Hugh Carthy, pink jersey wearer Richard Carapaz and Vincenzo Nibali roaring up the finish straight behind them. Where was Primoz Roglic? Well, that was the big question of the day and we try to sort out what happened with his bike change and ask where his Jumbo-Visma team car was at the crucial moment. The Giro d’Italia began its northward journey on Friday with a stage to L’Aquila in the mountains of Abruzzo, ten years after one of Italy’s worst ever earthquakes ravaged the region and the day’s finish-town in particular.  Having been abandoned by Lionel, Daniel Friebe rounds up the cream of the Giro’s international press pack to dissect the day’s action, which culminated in a stage victory for Pello Bilbao of Astana. Meanwhile, the overnight leader, Valerio Conti, overcame a few nervous moments to preserve his lead on the overall standings.  There are interviews with local boy Dario Cataldo, one of the stars of the stage, Davide Formolo, and of course our near-daily update from the inimitable Gianni Savio, manager of the Androni Giocattoli - Sidermec team.  **The Cycling Podcast is supported by Rapha and Science in Sport.**

Stage three of the 2019 Giro d’Italia took the riders from the birthplace of Leonardo Da Vinci to Orbetello, with the wind and threat of rain making the peloton nervous. Join Lionel Birnie, Daniel Friebe and Ciro Scognamiglio in Orbetello as they discuss the day’s big controversial moment – the relegation of Italian champion Elia Viviani for irregular sprinting. Viviani’s victory was handed to the second man across the line, Fernando Gaviria. As tears of joy turned to frustration for Viviani’s dad, who was watching in his camper van at the finish, we ask whether it was the right decision. Mario Cipollini’s former lead-out Mario Scirea made a bid to be considered cycling’s Arsene Wenger, claiming not to have seen the incident. We wrap up a tricky day for the overall contenders and their teammates, hearing from Mitchelton-Scott’s Simon Yates and Luke Durbridge and Miguel Angel Lopez’s climbing domestique Dario Cataldo. Gianni Savio reveals his cycling formation, we meet a former refugee turned professional cyclist and much more in a podcast that’s packed despite the relative lack of action in the stage.
