In the latest episode of the road.cc Podcast sponsored by Laka, we're winding down after our trip to the Criterium du Dauphine. Live from the departure lounge (please excuse a rather enthusiastic French airport announcer who pops up occasionally) Liam, Mat and Andrew talk about what it's like to head out to a World Tour race: watching it, hassling pro team PR people to get pics of unreleased bikes and more comedy mispronunciation of Toms Skujiņš all feature prominently! Liam and Dan also catch up with Hugh Carthy, the EF Education–EasyPost rider from Preston who loves to dig deep. Hugh reveals himself to be quite the bike nerd, telling us about his favourite vintage bikes back home and equipment preferences for big races. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
EF Education-Nippo become EF Education-EasyPost for 2022 season and have brought on a lot of talent in the transfer season including Mark Padun, Esteban Chaves, James Shaw and a number of other riders that will make for an exciting year. Michael Valgren and Magnus Cort will be targeting the 2022 Tour de France start in Denmark and Hugh Carthy might want to get a higher result in the Giro d'Italia.
EF Education Nippo came in with a lot of expectation to 2021 with Hugh Carthy finishing 3rd in the Vuelta Espana in 2020. Magnus Cort Nielsen impressed in the 2021 Vuelta with 3 stage wins but in the Tour de France the team unfortunately saw the collapse of Rigoberto Uran but he salvaged a 10th overall.
Although it was a quiet day on the Vuelta a España there's plenty for Daniel Friebe, Richard Moore and Lionel Birnie to talk about. They discuss the sprint finish and a second victory for Fabio Jakobsen before reflecting on some comments from EF Education-Nippo sports director Juanma Garate about Hugh Carthy, who withdrew from the race yesterday. We ponder the impact of pressure and leadership responsibility following an excellent result – Carthy was third in last year's Vuelta – and whether general classification contenders sometimes have to take a step back before moving forwards. The finish town of Mar Menor has been battling ecological disaster over the past couple of years and there were some protests from people hoping the Vuelta's visit would shed some light on the issue. While it's understandable the Grand Tours want to show off the best of the areas they pass through we discuss whether the sport also has a responsibility to help publicise important issues.
The first mountain stage of the Vuelta a España was contested by the breakaway, with the stage and red jersey of overall leader going to Rein Taaramae, the Estonian on the Intermarché team. Daniel Friebe and Richard Moore discuss the stage and what we learned, and we hear from Kenny Elissonde, who was third on the stage, and Primoz Roglic, the deposed leader. Daniel speaks to Hugh Carthy and Robert Gesink about the art of positioning in the bunch and we hear from Gino Mader about his initiative to raise money for an environmental organisation by donating a Euro for every rider he beats on each stage.
It's the final week of this grand tour and Egan Bernal leads by over 2 minutes to Damiano Caruso. Hugh Carthy moved up to 3rd place after a brutal stage 16 where the weather prevented us from seeing most of the finale. Stage 17 has a steep mountain finish that could see Bernal winning his 3rd stage. Can anyone stop him? That's what we talk about.
Brad and Graham are back and joined by living legend Sean Kelly for the last episode of the Bradley Wiggins Show this year to dissect a season like no other. The trio deliberate on the truncated racing calendar with Sam Bennett and Tao Geoghegan Hart's exploits at the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia lauded. King Kelly breaks down his nerves as protégé Bennett sealed Champs-Élysées glory. Primoz Roglic, who saw a maiden Tour de France win agonisingly taken from his grasp by Tadej Pogačar, bounced back to claim a consecutive Vuelta a España to continue an astounding few years. Elsewhere, Hugh Carthy was the latest breakthrough act in a season of breakthroughs, and Brad calls the Lancashire rider the finished package, who has a genuine chance of winning a Grand Tour. However, will EF Pro Cycling back him? 2012 Tour de France winner Brad expects Team Ineos to bounce back after – despite Giro success – a disappointing season but raises questions over some of the signings the British-based team have made.Chris Froome, who is set to sign with Israel Start-Up Nation for the 2021 season, expects excellence, adds Brad, and his team have made some astute signings to support the seven-times Grand Tour winner as he goes in search of a fifth Tour. Jedinou zaručenou vecou bude snaha Ineosu dostať Jumbo-Visma pod tlak a pokúsiť sa o last minute zvrat. Sobota sľubuje veľké vyvrcholenie sezóny! Foto: facebook.com/INEOSGrenadiers

Lizzy Banks joins Richard Moore and Lionel Birnie to discuss the stage and its implications for the race. They also debate the “gimmick” of the steep climb at the end that saw the riders change bikes mid-stage. We hear from Hugh Carthy, George Bennett and Will Barta, who looked like winning the stage until Roglic beat his time by just one second. With his team, CCC, folding at the end of the year, Barta doesn’t have a contract for 2021, but is in talks with one or two teams and hopes this result “gets it across the line.” The Cycling Podcast is supported by iwoca and Science in Sport

Ned and David reflect on a fantastic fourth stage win from Primoz Roglic and an excellent TT performance from Hugh Carthy at Stage 13 of the Vuelta.
Hugh Carthy was uncommon among uncommon men as he tamed the beast of l'Angliru and wrote himself large in cyclings history books.

Enfin, we dwalen af. How do you say bottle?' Carthy! Brad and Graham are back and joined by Sean Kelly for the latest episode of the Bradley Wiggins Show to ruminate on a busy week of cycling. The exploits of Tao Geoghegan Hart are given a warm appraisal, there is criticism for the UCI following a rider protest ahead of Stage 11, and Sean and Brad reflect on opportunities missed. Jonathan Vaughters speaks to Orla Chennaoui, suggesting that Primoz Roglic could fade towards the end of the third week of the Spanish Grand Tour, and adding that his EF rider Hugh Carthy, who won Stage 12 to put himself in GC contention, is an underrated time-trialist. Brad and Sean add that Carthy has shown he can challenge the elite, and that the rider from Lancashire, should believe that he can go on to win a maiden Grand Tour. Elsewhere, as the Vuelta has progressed, Brad adds, Chris Froome has shown encouraging signs of a return to form and could challenge for a fifth Tour de France next year.To finish, Brad and Sean reflect on the challenges of the fearsome Alto de l'Angliru, which Brad rode in 2011 with a broken collarbone. The Bradley Wiggins Show is produced by Pete Burton. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The Vuelta a España tackled the fearsome Angliru and in this episode Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Lizzy Banks review a thrilling final five kilometres that again changed the complexion of the overall race. The Angliru belonged to Preston's Hugh Carthy of EF Pro Cycling, who attacked twice on the climb to clinch his first Grand Tour stage victory. Behind that, Primoz Roglic was unable to respond the attacks and although he was looked after brilliantly by his Jumbo-Visma teammate Sepp Kuss lost the red jersey to Richard Carapaz again. Where does this leave the Vuelta now, with the time trial to come on Tuesday? We also hear from AG2R's Harry Tanfield, who was the last man over the line at the Angliru, about a difficult couple of stages in the mountains. This week I’m Talking Luft with Brit Hugh Carthy. We’re a week in at the Vuelta and he’s riding like a demon, currently 4th on GC. We sat down on the first rest day to chat cap style, beverages, training loops and he tells a true peloton war story from that day of golf ball […]
Richard Moore and Lionel Birnie are again joined by François Thomazeau to discuss the eighth stage of the Vuelta a España, which offered some more clues as to who is going to be the strongest over three weeks. If Primoz Roglic seemed to falter in recent days as Richard Carapaz took over the leader’s jersey the Slovenian struck back on the Alto de Moncavillo to win the stage and reduce the Ecuadorian’s overall lead. Before that Preston’s Hugh Carthy put his second place on the line with an attack. In this episode we hear from Carthy’s EF Pro Cycling teammate Mitch Docker and from Nic Dlamini, one of our other audio diarists at the Vuelta. A great day for Team EF Pro Cycling as Rusty Woods has the smarts to beat a high quality break away group on Stage 7. Ned and Dave reflect on another tough stage on the Vuelta and Daniel Friebe's interview with Preston's Hugh Carthy.
The Giro d’Italia concluded with the final time trial into Milan and an already simmering Vuelta a España bubbled into life in the freezing rain. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Lizzy Banks recap all the racing, starting with analysis of the time trial which gave Tao Geoghegan Hart overall victory in the Giro ahead of Jai Hindley. We also hear from Daniel Friebe at the Vuelta on a day when Ineos Grenadiers took the red jersey as Richard Carapaz and Hugh Carthy gained an advantage on Primoz Roglic. An epic day of racing as Ned and David first discuss a rainswept stage 6 of the Vuelta, where Richard Carapaz and Hugh Carthy snatched first and second from Primoz Roglic and Dan Martin, and then reflect on Tao Geoghegan Hart's career-defining victory in the Giro d'Italia.
Sunday witnessed another remarkable moment in the history of British cycling as Tao Geoghegan Hart won the Giro d'Italia for Ineos Grenadiers, seeing off Jai Hindley in the final time trial in Milan after going into Stage 21 level on time.Tao becomes the fifth Brit to win a Grand Tour, a run started by Brad and carried on by Geraint Thomas, Chris Froome and Simon Yates. We hear the interview Tao conducted with Brad during The Breakaway after his stunning victory on the streets of Milan.Brad and Graham reflect on a wonderful achievement for the Londoner, the relationship he has with Brad and the qualities which make him so special.Ineos Grenadiers managed to bag GC as well as seven stages despite losing G early on in the race, with Filippo Ganna picking up the final stage to round off a stunning Grand Tour. But special praise is reserved for Rohan Dennis too after his herculean efforts to bring Tao to the title. We look back on a quite unforgettable Giro - but let's not forget another big British talent, Hugh Carthy, who is now second on GC in the Vuelta...We are back next weekend for the latest on the Spanish Grand Tour. The Bradley Wiggins Show is produced by Pete Burton. Graham and Brad sit down after a bonkers Stage 8 of the Tour de France to discuss a truly bizarre attack from Julian Alaphillipe, the wheels coming off for Thibaut Pinot and Adam Yates staying in yellow for another day after battling over the ‘British climb'.But it's whilst Brad thinks Yates can win the whole damn thing there are plenty of other contenders for the yellow jersey, not least Primoz Roglic, who Brad says looks like the most impressive of the bunch thus far, while we should keep an eye out for Nairo Quintana.Pinot won't be one of them after a terrible day and Brad ponders whether a change of scenery might help the Frenchman. Pinot's compatriot Alaphilippe meanwhile, remains as difficult to figure out as ever! Also we've got a special bonus as EF Education First rider Hugh Carthy jumps on the pod to discuss how he's finding the Tour and whether one day he might end up having a dig at a stage win. The second stage of the Vuelta a España turned the race on its head as a powerful group of six got away on the final climb. Join Lionel Birnie and Richard Moore as they recap a thrilling race into Calpe that saw Nairo Quintana win the stage and Nicolas Roche take the leader’s red jersey. We hear the second installments from our diarists in the peloton, James Knox and Nick Schultz, plus we check in with Daniel Friebe about Astana’s topsy turvey couple of days. Plus there’s reaction from Roche’s Sunweb sports director Luke Roberts and Hugh Carthy, who played a role in setting up Rigoberto Uran on the final climb. After twelve months of health problems, Esteban Chaves returned to the top step of the podium, by winning in San Martino di Castrozza in the Dolomites, as the overall contenders shadow boxed before Saturday’s final day in the mountains. Richard Moore and Daniel Friebe review all the action and look ahead to the crucial penultimate stage. There are interviews with Chaves’s Mitchelton-Scott teammates Lucas Hamilton and Chris Juul-Jensen, and also with Vincenzo Nibali, Hugh Carthy and Max Sciandri, sports director at Movistar, the team of the overall leader, Richard Carapaz. A surprise winner and a skirmish between the overall contenders marked the seventeenth stage of the Giro d’Italia, which saw the race enter the German speaking part of Italy. In the podcast Richard Moore and Daniel Friebe are joined by Ciro Scognamiglio and there are interviews with Mikel Landa, Hugh Carthy, Esteban Chaves, Larry Warbasse, Ben O’Connor and a very frustrated and disappointed Bob Jungels, whose Giro has not gone according to plan. Straight to you from a traffic jam in northern Italy, Caley and Dave break down the antics of the Mortirolo and discuss the gear choices (and mechanical issues) brought on by the famed climb. Plus we hear from Hugh Carthy, Fabrizio Guidi, and Primoz Roglic.
Caley and Dave start their day on a roundabout island, surrounded by the peloton of the Giro d'Italia, and end it sitting on a set of steps that lead down to Lake Como. In between was one of the most exciting Giro stages we've seen in years. Needless to say, it was a good day. Listen in for details of Primoz Roglic's bike swap, plus the daring ethos of Hugh Carthy.
Another packed episode of The Cycling Podcast from the Giro d’Italia comes from the shores of Lake Como after stage 15. Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe recap a day during which the two-man break stayed clear to contest the finish – although they only stayed away by 11 seconds in the end. The victory went to Dario Cataldo ahead of his breakaway companion Mattia Cattaneo but they had Simon Yates, Hugh Carthy, pink jersey wearer Richard Carapaz and Vincenzo Nibali roaring up the finish straight behind them. Where was Primoz Roglic? Well, that was the big question of the day and we try to sort out what happened with his bike change and ask where his Jumbo-Visma team car was at the crucial moment. The first phase of the 2019 Giro d’Italia concluded with a tricky time trial to San Marino which tested the riders’ climbing legs on another day when the rain fell heavily. Lionel Birnie is back from his weekend trip home to join Daniel Friebe in the holiday resort of Riccione to ask Primoz Roglic has won the Giro (of course he hasn’t), whether the weather is the worst for the opening week of any grand tour (anecdotal rather than evidence-based) and whether it has been the least dramatic opening week of the Giro for years (probably). But they decide the race is only just beginning. They weigh up whether Simon Yates is out of contention following his disappointing performance and we hear from young British riders James Knox and Hugh Carthy. We found a moment on the second rest day here at the Giro d'Italia to sit down and have a yarn with English climber and breakaway specialist Hugh Carthy. Hugh in his 4th year as a pro and is starting to find his feet at riding Grand Tours, especially here in his 2nd Giro. We chat about his day up front in a long breakaway and about is less traveled road across to the European professional cycling circuit.
